To keep it short, I am dming for a group of people that just completed a quest for a wizard. The wizard told them to choose something as a reward (She has a couple of magic items).
The problem is: the warlock asked for her to teach him and the sorcerer a new spell.
My question is: Is it possible? If yes, how to do it and how long would it take?
I’m not sure. Sorcerers and warlock learn their spells very differently than wizards do. However, there should be some way to “translate” a wizard spell into a format usable by other arcane casters. Ask your DM. I’m sure they’ll handwave something if they think it’s a good reward for your characters and it won’t upset the campaign balance.
Even easier. Just handwave it. I would say that a Wizard teaching spells to a sorcerer or warlock requires a translation spell. The NPC Wizard has the translation spell, but it requires material components that the PCs have to go on a short quest to find.
Thank you both for the conversation... If I do it, I am going to make it really hard, so they don't try to do it in the future, also I will create a DC depending on what spell they want, if they fail they have to redo the proccess. I will explain that to them before hand and maybe there is another quest to find the components required for a non-wizard be able to learn spells from a master.
Edit: And its nothing set in stone, if it proofs to be too gamebreaking I will rule something out (maybe a 1spell max sorta of thing)
I would not allow it, on the grounds that each one gets their spells from a different source.
Wizards get spells from study, learning incantations, etc. Sorcerers get their spells innately, like a mutant on the X-Men team -- born with them, basically. Patrons get their spells from a patron. Having a wizard teach the sorcerer how to cast a spell would be like Batman, who made a teleport gadget, showing Nightcrawler how to teleport with his mutant powers. It's not possible. Nightcrawler's TP comes form innate mutations, not gadgets. Batman can't teach Nightcrawler how to teleport. Same basic idea here.

Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
There's a RAW mechanic for this kind of thing: multiclassing. Your sorc and warlock just need to take one level of wizard, and they can copy the spell to their spellbooks.

Yeah, but it’s the same arcane spell. Only the method of casting differs. I could easily see Nightcrawler helping Batman build a teleporter.

Whole different universe there... But since you mention it, Zatanna (Wizard), Constantine (Sorcerer) and Doctor Fate (Warlock), in more than one occasion helped each other by "magic amplification" or by teaching each other some "spell or ritual".
But in my case they can all weave the fabric of magic in different ways, so maybe they learn how to do it in their way and I will open the possibility for them to choose the spell as they level up.
You could grant them the Magic Initiate (Wizard) feat as a boon. That would be the closest way to do it RAW without multiclassing. If that’s too powerful you could always homebrew a feat that did the same thing without the Cantrips.
But the new spell would be taught in the Wizarding tradition, so they would have to use Int as their Spellcasting ability for it.

That's really good, thank you. And I wasn't even thinking about having them use Int for the spell, that may balance things out since they don't have high Int.
Yeah. Multiclassing or allowing a semi-feat is probably the best way to go. Personally I would probably tell them that they would have to multiclass if they wanted the Wizard to teach them spells. If they don't want to do that, just have the Wizard say "Then, alas, I cannot teach you my magic. Is there anything else I can do to reward you?"
You could have the wizard try to teach them, but give the players a high possibility of failure given they'd need to use intelligence to learn from a wizard (usually a dump stat) in a way that their class typically doesn't get spells.
Even if they succeed, maybe they only get the spell once per day (especially if the spell they try to learn is not on the sorcerer/ warlock spell list) so you treat it as kind of a semi-Magic Initiate type bonus.

That’s exactly what I would do. The Weave covers all forms of arcane magic and wizards, sorcerers and warlocks all ultimately draw their spells from the same source.
Eh, I like the idea from a PC perspective obviously but unfortunately I wouldn’t do it. I’d say to them: unfortunately the way warlocks and sorcerers learn spells it is not possible. You say there are rewards though, you could give them “wand of web“ or some other similar items, perhaps a homebrew version of such things.

@Kotath I agree. But teaching them one new spell each wouldn’t ruin the campaign, would it?
Perhaps not, but by doing so, you've created expectations for the future.
Hmm. I guess...
Didn’t think that far ahead lol

You could always give them magic initiate and have that be their feat for the next time they get an ASI. Basically give it to them early.

I would just give them Magic Initiate for free. If they have to spend an asi on it, then it isn't really a reward.
