I would prefer to pay for the books again as digital content if the Beyond was free.
To use Beyond as a holder, so i can use the books in the best possible way.
I don't think that's a fiscally viable option for maintaining servers, developing new products etc. Service and Product are two separate things here.
I am totally fine with a subscription fee as long as it is within my budget and the utility of the site benefits my games. I am totally fine with buying digital versions of books I don't already own hard copies of. However, If I pay $20-$40 for a digital copy of something, I would want to be sure that the digital copy is still mine and accessible on my hard drive or cloud in the event that something happens to this site in future.

I bought the books because I didn't want to wait for the digital format to a tabletop game to be released before I got to play it... that made more sense before I typed it, I swear!
I didn't want to wait to play 5e, so I bought the PH. I didn't want to wait to DM, so I paid for MM and DMG. By that point, buying SCAG and Volo's was inevitable. I HAVE the books! (Cards too!)
I don't mind paying for a digital version that ties it all together BUT it better have EVERYTHING!
Unearthed Arcana? Check.
Easy to use, versatile character sheets? Yup.
DM's tools like character trackers and encounter builders? Better believe it.
Build guide forums? Sure.
Exclusive content? Why not!
Easy cross referencing? Mmmmm-hmmmm...
New creatures with stat-blocks? Oh yeah.
Adventure modules? Plenty.
Play-test feedback? Yeah buddy!
Access to the DM's guild? Yes, please!
Pizza delivery app? Maybe too far...
I love the game, I'll keep buying the books. Make this worth it and people will pay for it, including us book buyers.
One last humble request, please don't charge a subscription fee and plaster our service with ads!

When the people of the future learn of my deeds, they'll surely say he was human - mistakes were made
I DM and character creation and tracking from the PHB is the most important and will be the make or break for price point. I literally have $300-$400 in books from PHB to Volo and Strahd to Tyranny in addition to non WotC books like Tome. And don't want to have to repay for many things I don't want or need.
I hope it is more ala carte.

If you already have the books great don't see why just because a digital version might be available that you would have to buy that too. You don't go to the car manufacturers and say hey I bought last years model now give me this years features.
I think a melding of the two would be ideal. I'm certain there are many factors that would prevent it but if the service could be integration with DMs Guild Content or digital tabletops I'd lean more towards a subscription service. However, as I do not DM having access to just a good character creator and spell manager would make gaming much simpler.
I am torn because it would be nice for this service to be a stand alone product that would be all someone needs to have a great D&D experience, I'm not sure I would want it to be a replacement because I'm not sure it would capture the beauty and essence current Wizard of the Coast products give to the world experience. Additionally, as much as I dislike the prospect, I believe repurchasing of some material may be necessary to continue development and maintenance of new products, lore and features.
There will probably be a free tier which will let you manage a small number of characters and use the SRD and Basic content (which is already free). That said, more information about pricing is over at this thread.
was wondering if there has been any discussion of including or discounting the DnDBeyond service with an Amazon Prime account? Amazon=Twitch=Curse after all it would be a nice perk for those of use who already pay amazon a hundred bucks a year for free shipping on our DnD book purchases.
This is a great idea. I assume they will push for a monthly subscription way more than a one time shot. That being said, i think if your already involved and giving money they should give some sort of discount as a show of loyalty. (sadly however, they will most likely not because all companies want money and if they can get multiple monies from you from multi angles, they will)
While I totally agree that corporations want money, Amazon has been spending a lot of time trying to make Twitch an appealing platform for non-videogame content. Using it as a landing platform for niche markets to secure them to their buying would be an excellent idea. They have crammed a lot of small savings features into Amazon Prime to do this. Like the Audible discounts, etc. I could see them doing it if they had any say in things. Its only a real question if Hasbro, owners of WotC & DnD, would see enough benefit to them to allow it.
Beyond that Twitch's new videogame discounts for streamers is likely to come into play here. Imagine a group like HyperRPG who are already streaming on Twitch with table top play. They are using the Curse client already. Why wouldn Twitch link book sales, both physical and digital, to discounts and sales tracking like they are already planning for videogames. I could even see them buying out FantasyGrounds, and making it a Twitch client extension just to bring it all under one roof. Though that's only if Amazon sees a huge market in the digital tabletop games space.
I wouldn't mind paying for the extra content, like Volo's guide monsters for example, as long as the fee is reasonable for a digital version. (Especially since I already bought the printed book.) I also wouldn't mind paying a small one time fee for access to premium features, or maybe even the site itself, but a subscription fee is a no go for me. Say it's only $5; that's almost two books worth over the course of a year. How can I justify that, when Paizo's stuff is already free? Heck; even everything on HERE is already free. Why would I pay a subscription for a filing cabinet?

Yes all the stuff on here is free (at the moment) because it's the stuff that is free in the System Reference Document - however you have a choice of scrolling through a pdf, or having a lovely system to search, filter, and navigate easily through. The subscription is to pay for a lovely filing cabinet that has the page you need as soon as you open it vs. shuffling through pages of unbound notes that aren't in order.
I currently use a 3rd party character sheet manager and a reference app. I check all rules through those when I need to.
I'm happy to swap to Beyond if it proves superior (it looks like it will be), but not at cost. It makes life easier, but it's not necessary in order to play the game, so if it costs me money, I'll lose interest.
I may be willing to pay a small one time fee for access to it, and I'd be happy if I could have a small number of character sheets and/or a campaign management section with the rulebooks behind a paywall, but anything more than that and I'll lose interest.
That's not a criticism by any means, I fully understand that this is a business venture - it's merely my personal position.
I think that even they don't know what the pricing model will look like. From what I've seen, my thought process is that they'll probably charge for "full texts" or any "relevant text" or info from within that text ie. just the fighter section from SCAG. Otherwise I think they'll probably charge for networking and online play or the encounter builder, higher level stuff like that

I think maybe they should try and partner with Pizza Hut to get that last feature added that would make it feel like classic D&D to me.
Do you think that this service will be free, because if it is it kinda negates the need for the books anymore.
Whats your thoughts?

We already know it will not be free. You will likely get the SRD and that's it.

Has there been an official announcement that it will not be free?

There's been posts from the devs yes.
SRD will be free.
You wil be able to buy content beyond that. For example, buy the fighter pack to access everything for the fighter. Or buy the actual content.
A subscription will exist to unlock more than a few character slots and to access the homebrew content.

Sorta?
I think there will be a free component, but I also think that the stuff people are really looking for will be behind a paywall.
