So in other words, we have to implement the UA ourselves and do your jobs for you? I pay for a subscription, I'm not paying to do your work for you. Bet you'd find the resources to make more sets of microtransaction dice though. Shame on you.
Hello,
I would like to remind everyone that the staff have demonstrated time and again that they take time to read comments from the users of this forum. There are human beings on the other side of the screen. This comment is entirely unnecessary.
You are not doing 'their work' to add unofficial content to your game. DnDB is and has always been the official site for official D&D content.

I think we have different opinions on what is official. I consider UA to be official playtest material. Just like I consider the Sage Advice Compendium errata's official rulings.
Dndbeyond years ago made a commitment to try and release all the UA. They are backing out of that commitment and with the new subscriber perks commitment I can understand why the person you responded to feels the way they do. If DNDbeyond finds any persons comments out of line on this forum I'm sure the mods or staff will inform/ban said person.
All I would have asked them to continue to do is do the work they are asking us to do - use the available tools to make as much of the UA as best they can. I don't see why a dev specifically would be needed to do this. They use the reasoning that they can't release it in it's intended form without pulling dev(s), yet have no qualms releasing unfinished tools/features/other official content. You only have to look as far as the original post to see an example. *Shrug*
Playtest content is just playtest content but it sucks that they are backing out of doing the work and passing it off to us. It is definitely going to increase my work load and I find their reasoning flimsy based on their other features/tools/content releases.

Hello,
This is quibbling over the use of the word 'official'. Just because something is presented to the public from WotC does not make it officially released 5e content, which is the primary purpose of DnDB as a digital source. UA is workshop material that will be reworked and then released as official content in the future.
As a sidebar, just because a comment is not actionable, does not make it mature, rational, respectful, or appropriate. We can and should call out bad behavior when it is observed to maintain a respectful forum with constructive feedback.
Do you have a link to the written promise that DnDB made where they said that UA will always be found here? Because short of that, they are not reneging on any understood agreement between the organization and the consumer.
I am genuinely sorry that you will be burdened with the work of personally archiving all future UA content. You might find it less burdensome if you focus only on homebrewing that which you have an interest in using. I have noticed quite a few individuals who take issue with this news and who all have reasons why they cannot commit to homebrewing all UA. Perhaps as an alternative to doing all the work yourself, you can form a UA campaign and organize the work among these frustrated individuals so that the effort is relatively minor?
You can throw titles around all you want. Playtest stuff is not part of 5e until Wotc says it is. "Official playtest material" is still not officially part of the 5e game. What any of us consider to be part of the game needs to match real world definitions.
There is no supposed "commitment" to Keep up UA but you can download the PDF's yourself and play them still. I bet there will still be notifications for each new UA article either on the Home page or in the forums.
All I know is they should Finish implementing the PHB stuff (see ranger, druid and more) before adding weird things that have a good chance of never making it to the game in its "Playtest form."

This is what I was referencing. They also stated it was their #1 request at the time in that article.

Yes, I agree it is quibbling over what is official, I feel you were making a point about what you feel dndbeyond has to release based on what is official (published) content.
I suppose I'll change my language to present my position as the word official will confuse it. I believe that dndbeyond is allowed to host all WotC dnd 5e content including UA and they probably aren't allowed to themselves provide 3rd party content with few exceptions (crit role). Although I admit that's an assumption based on what happened to the league content. They call it an "An official digital toolset for Fifth Edition". That to me doesn't read they will only add finalized and published by WotC content (or officially part of the game content). To me it reads it is just an official toolset for 5e or in other words they were given the green light by WotC and dndbeyond has some agreement with them. I don't think we know what they have to do to keep that agreement in place but I assume they at least have to release the compendium content. They clearly don't have to implement all of the published material into their toolset and it clearly doesn't have to work as intended in said toolset. They don't have to release UA either - however I'm disappointed they backed out of this a few months after making a commitment to add additional sub perks every month.
I understand you don't like the way the person you were responding to worded it and disagree with how the person feels about it. I was stating I don't think their behavior is that bad and I think the people at dndbeyond can handle that criticism. I agree with the persons feelings - I started playing on this site consistently after they made the statement they will support UA going forward so it feels like part of the package is being removed. Now it's hard to justify leaving this site ever after the money poured into it - the risk we take using it in the first place - so part of the package being removed feels even worse however minor/major it might be.
I don't have a reason I can't homebrew it and I will be - I just don't understand why dndbeyond can't do that either. I disagree with their reasoning of it needs to be as intended - their other releases including final published content say otherwise. It would have been nice if they would have at least done what they are asking us to do now. Most people enjoy having a lessened work load - especially to play a game so increasing that workload is bound to annoy people.
The campaign idea is an excellent way to get around not being able to publish it that I had not thought of. I have not done this as I've had no reason to but if you add to your collection another person's homebrew that isn't published then leave the campaign can you still see it? Then can you go on to share it with the people in your other campaigns or are you the only one who can use it? If not I'll probably stick to making it myself because I wouldn't want to lose it if the other person left the campaign and I host a number of games. If it is possible I'll check in on the UA forums the next time UA comes out and see if anyone is doing this.
Well, this is a bit rough in the sense that I was looking forward to some of the UA stuff and adding it to some of my character sheets. However, I am fine with it in the sense that you can make things run even more smoothly and most of the UA stuff I wanted comes out with Fizban's in a couple months
What is the deal with the dndbeyond apologists on this page? You’re all experts in marketing, development, and product cycles; and seem oddly insistent that the rest of us can’t feel or express disappoint in a decision that let us down. That is not your call to make. Whatever you believe the intent of UA was, or should have been, it was fun and now it’s gone. Rabbitfolk were cool, and playing with Dhampir convinced me to preorder ravenloft. In its place we’ve been given a vague promise of future developments with no description or timeline, and a hand wave that cutting UA has any impact on whatever that is. Did they really move the staff to other projects or just cut them? We don’t know. Even if they told us, we wouldn’t know. You don’t have to feel the same way I do about it, and I won’t tell you to. Please control that urge.
A small concern, I love the tools DnDBeyond is offering, but removing content like this can be a bit frustrating, Dungeons & Dragons can be a varied game and a lot of the unearthed arcana rules till work great. Especially the Fairy folk stuff. Now if I want players to play the race I have to spent my own time to recreate something that is already in your database which is a waste of time.
Rather than removing things, as a customer I love to see more content being available, homebrew classes for example.
I suppose handling unearthed arcana content is a huge workload, but honestly, I rather see character options being made available, even if they're not officially released yet, as opposed to virtual dices, which are kind of useless when you're using software like FoundryVTT anyway.
So in other words, we have to implement the UA ourselves and do your jobs for you? I pay for a subscription, I'm not paying to do your work for you. Bet you'd find the resources to make more sets of microtransaction dice though. Shame on you.
They were never under any obligation to implement UA, they did it as a favor for us and they did it feee of charge. Your subscription did it get you access to UA, it was free for all. They decided they cannot keep doing folks a favor is all.
The people who do the dice are just artists slapping skins on the same dice that were already programmed. The folks redesigning the software and implementing actual, official D&D content were the ones who kept getting pulled to work on UA. Then half the UA doesn’t work that way when it gets officially released, so half their work was wasted.
Here is my thoughts on this. I welcome change and I welcome the new races that are probably gonna be kind of the same sort of races. Like I am very exited for Harengon's and might even fix Owlins when they come. I don't care for that it is microtransactions because quite frankly it is worth it for me so I then can have the freedom to use them. Like the "Hobgoblin", that are an official race in D&D and "Hobgoblin of the Feywild" that are an UA was something that I just felt was the same for me. Like I would just use a Hobgoblin from the official one if I wanted an Hobgoblin.
The thing I got a problem with was that they needed to get rid of it now and not when all the books are already out so we can buy from the official sources of DnD and not needing to use the UA ones. Like I LOVE the Rabbitfolk builds I have been able to do and if I would've knew earlier I would've saved every Rabbitfolk I ever did and all Owlfolk I ever did to be able to play with them and their stats and such.
But I am hoping that the "Wild Beyond the Witchlight" will grant the player an even greater experience with the Harengon's :)
... oddly insistent that the rest of us can’t feel or express disappoint in a decision that let us down.
I've said from page one of this thread that I understand the frustration and disappointment, and I believe most others on this side of the argument have as well. From my point of view there just seems a little bit too much entitlement: DDB never owed us UA support, and DDB doesn't really owe us an explanation either.

I understand the reasons for stopping future support of UA materials. I'm less clear on why currently active UA material is being retired now instead of waiting for WotC's mandate.
Hello,
My guess is that at least some material is nearing the end of its playtest cycle and DnDB pulls UA at the end of playtest, as per their agreement with WotC.
The keywords being some and nearing. They could have waited for the end of cycle instead of pulling the plug on everything now. But no matter, it is done and the material is not coming back.
I'm sorry, but I don't think you understand the playtest cycle. For WotC, they publish UA. Usually within two weeks a survey opens for an about two week window. After that window the "cycle" is actually over. D&D Beyond as a courtesy has tried to get stuff up, the most recent two I believe actually didn't go online till after WotC was done with its survey. WotC present policy allows users to read through, download PDFs of its UA, with the caveat that it's unofficial playtest material. It never goes away and most of it can be home-brewed into DDB (some things like the Mystic class can't be, and the Strixhaven classes would require a lot of effort to get something that approximates the cross-class subclasses).
Everything UA-wise DDB currently hosts is well past "the playtest cycle". Frankly, users have had the luxury/privilege of being able to integrate all this UA into their accounts per DDB's courtesy. Being sour and trying to make points about "some" and "nearing" in this instance is predicated on a misunderstanding of what UA is in the first place.

The very first thing I said was^ (and I quote) “bummer.” I too am disappointed, that doesn’t mean I don’t agree with DDB. And it doesn’t mean you can’t feel however you want.

I do not have a problem with people voicing their disappointment. I hope people continue to voice their disappointment, because I want UA to be brought back as well. I do not think anyone here has an issue with people voicing their disappointment.
However, there is a difference between voicing disappointment respectfully and being a jerk about it. To quote myself from earlier:
And as for your second point as much as it pains me I do agree but here's the part you apparently can't understand this is something some of us don't like and because of this we are letting beyond know our opinion on the matter in the hopes the change their mind, why you feel the need to attack (can't think of a better word) us I don't know. And now I need to leave for a bit because I'm getting real close to saying things that would get me in trouble with mods.
I do not have an issue with people voicing their disappointment. What I do have an issue is when crap like this gets tossed around:
Absolutely pathetic. You're completely out of touch with your customers and what they desire from the platform. Implementation is the most important aspect of what you do yet the only teams you seem interested in supporting are the microtransaction/virtual dice teams. Careful, your greed is showing.
No more UA, but guys, we get containers!!!! How ******* exciting to be able to put shit in bags. Who gives a flying **** about containers?? DDB must have lost their contract since Wizards is staring their own digital platform. Sucks to suck DDB, I guess your time is running out. It was fun while it lasted.
The joke here is that they are saying it's to give them more time on adding more functions or improving others but we really know that it's going towards more fake dice for people to pay for.
So in other words, we have to implement the UA ourselves and do your jobs for you? I pay for a subscription, I'm not paying to do your work for you. Bet you'd find the resources to make more sets of microtransaction dice though. Shame on you.

Yes, but to be entirely fair, unless and until DDB shows us what they are actually working on, their frustration is entirely valid, if not necessarily accurate.
It feels bad to lose a feature we enjoy and have come to depend on, and the only thing we get in return is smoke and mirrors, marketing speak.
It's not that hard to imagine that it's just a way to save money for the company, ultimately, and the customer perception (at least those of us who pay for a sub and buy content here) is that the company must be raking it in already.

The frustration is valid either way. What it's not is a meaningful reason for DDB not to proceed as indicated.

@Jay_Lane: Thank you for your thoughtful post. Obviously we do disagree on what was promised in the past or what implied obligations DnDB should assume, but at the very least, your follow-up post is not off-putting and I can understand where you are coming from. Cheers.
EDIT: I realize that I didn't answer your questions regarding campaigns. I am unsure myself. I never investigated this before. It might be worth exploring in a UA Test before proceeding. I would even be willing to give it a try with you, to help you understand whether it is possible if people leave the campaign later. If you are interested, please send me a PM.

Hello,
Many users on this site, I imagine, are well into adulthood and there is a good chance that some are professionals in a field that at least in some way informs their opinions on the change. For a game that has been around for several decades, is this really so difficult to believe?
Perhaps this is a matter of perspective, but I do not recall anyone telling anyone else how to feel or whether disappointment can be expressed. What I have seen however, are some users (myself included) attempting to address voiced concerns and discouraging rude behaviors. Do you believe that you have the right to express your frustration, but others do not have the right to challenge those frustrations with opposing views?
Whatever you believe the intent of UA was, or should have been, it was fun and now it’s gone. Rabbitfolk were cool, and playing with Dhampir convinced me to preorder ravenloft.
I agree, UA is fun sometimes. It is incorrect to say that it is gone, however.
I won't participate in rumor or speculation, but I am sorry to see that this thread has been a source of frustration for you.
I haven't re-read, because it was frustrating the first time, so I didn't really follow who-said-what; but I do apologize if you felt personally called out, that wasn't the intent. Generally speaking, condescension is not less rude than histrionics.
No worries, sir. I truly do understand the frustration and the need to express it. In fact, I believe that expressing concerns can be extremely helpful to any organization. I work in US healthcare; patient feedback is critical to any program and initiative. Please, continue to do so when you feel the desire.

This has been a frustrating thread to read.
Hi

Sorry you had to stop, but it was getting a bit wacky with UAs coming back to back w/ funky new ideas that often didn't reach the books
I've said from page one of this thread that I understand the frustration and disappointment, and I believe most others on this side of the argument have as well. From my point of view there just seems a little bit too much entitlement: DDB never owed us UA support, and DDB doesn't really owe us an explanation either.

EDIT: Actually, never mind. It's a waste of time.

The very first thing I said was^ (and I quote) “bummer.” I too am disappointed, that doesn’t mean I don’t agree with DDB. And it doesn’t mean you can’t feel however you want.

Maybe its for the better, especially for newer Players
I do not have a problem with people voicing their disappointment. I hope people continue to voice their disappointment, because I want UA to be brought back as well. I do not think anyone here has an issue with people voicing their disappointment.
However, there is a difference between voicing disappointment respectfully and being a jerk about it. To quote myself from earlier:

I agree, UA is fun sometimes. It is incorrect to say that it is gone, however.
I won't participate in rumor or speculation, but I am sorry to see that this thread has been a source of frustration for you.

No worries, sir. I truly do understand the frustration and the need to express it. In fact, I believe that expressing concerns can be extremely helpful to any organization. I work in US healthcare; patient feedback is critical to any program and initiative. Please, continue to do so when you feel the desire.
