The subscription let's you share the items you own with some people and increases the number of characters you can create. You purchase the books in the marketplace to get access to the content. The base content is only the beginner set. If you look at the marketplace it should make more sense.
Interesting; for me the marketplace page scrolls down, not across. But I absolutely agree that it should be laid out better.
It can be complex, if one isn't buying just straight books, but I actually appreciate the flexibility, as I've been able to buy only what I want. I wrote the guide because so many people seem to assume that the legendary bundle is the only option--or at least the only way to get what they want--and then post about their sticker shock. I wanted to help folks think about what their wants and needs really are.
Why can I not see the Subscription and other details of this site? Like if I buy a book, is it available as a PDF or only online? What is the monthly cost? When I try to follow the link on this page I get a 403 FORBIDDEN splash page?

I'm guessing the "Full Subscription" link in the OP goes to an outdated page; I would agree that it should be updated. But Aramalian is correct that the marketplace will get you to info on subscriptions."Books" purchased here are not available as PDFs; they can be accessed online, or, if you have an iOS or Android mobile device (phone or tablet), there is a DnDBeyond app that will let you download the "books" for offline access within that app. The app is still under development, so it isn't as full featured as the website.
Note that content and subscriptions are separate here at DnD Beyond. A subscription is not required to use the service. Subscriptions give you access to more features, but not to content. Content must be purchased with a one-time purchase. Free (no subscription) accounts are limited to 6 characters and there will be adds on some pages. The Hero Tier subscription lets you have an infinite number of characters, and removes adds. The Master Tier subscription includes the Hero benefits plus the ability to share purchased content with up to 3 campaigns, with up to 12 people per campaign.
After you've taken a look at the subscription details and the markeplace, you might find the buyers guide linked in my signature helpful.
Read through a lot of this post, never found an updated answer... if I get the master tier am I able to restrict content yet? I would like my pc’s to have access to character options and items, but not adventure modules due to spoilers/meta game cheating...

It's a planned feature but not yet implemented. You could just turn on content sharing during character creation and leveling in order to limit it somewhat, since (I believe) they don't lose access to anything on the characters when content sharing is off, they just can't add anything new.
Either way, for now, it's a matter of having to trust your players not to cheat. :)
Just bought a sub thinking I would have access to all sub-classes in the character builder.. disappointing to see that's not the case.
I have already bought the physical books, why do I have to pay again for the same content..?
Sub cancelled. Thank god I didn't pay for a year.!
Not sure if you'll be back to read this, but maybe it will help someone else.
The subscription is not or accessing the books. The main point of the subscription is to be able to make unlimited characters, and to share content you've purchased with others.
As much as I love DDB, they do a very poor job of explaining this on the subscription page where it is not expressly spelled out that you have to buy the books separately.
"Orcs are savage raiders and pillagers with stooped postures, low foreheads, and piggish faces with prominent lower canines that resemble tusks." MM p245 (original printing) You don't OWN your books on DDB: WotC can change them any time. What do you think will happen when OneD&D comes out?
DDB Really needs to work on a subscription plan that allows access to the book content. Work the numbers for a pay per month / 6months and year plan.
There is no reason this cannot be done because if you can sell it, you can work it into a subscription plan as well and in the end if what DDB provides is a solid product, people will end up paying more over time than a one time fee for the same content and it will be money consistently instead of sporadically. Hell, they could even work in a different sharing model to make it work.
I came here looking for a subscription plan that allows access to content. Disappointment followed.
A subscription service requires them to buy the license for the products from wizards of the coast ahead of time and hope you keep the subscription long enough to justify the cost. If they set the price point too high you won't and they lose money. If they set it too low they live constantly in the red until they break even and they still might lose money
Currently they allow someone who bought the books and a subscription to share with up to 18 characters. They allow you to buy just the parts you want. They allow you to buy the whole book. They allow you to put the info into the system for free. That's a pretty broad set of choices to meet your budget.
I'm assuming dndbeyond ran the numbers and decided subscribe for the books wasn't a business model that fit for them.
Let's say I took out a player subscription for 6 months, but in 3 months time I'm hosting lots of games and would perhaps need the master's subscription are there any 'upgrade' options or would I have to pay for a whole new subscription full price?

You would need to raise a support ticket (click here) and they can cancel your current hero tier membership providing a partial refund for the remaining time and then you can purchase a Master tier subscription.

Hi Shadrick. Have you turned on Content Sharing on the campaign page? Are the characters in question inside of the campaign with content sharing turned on?

I read your guide, this must be the most complicated way they could ever have done this, its laughable.
This will only work for true geeks (not a bad thing) and die hard fans.
Even in the market place the only setting that I can see is to purchase for 400 bucks.
And all I want is a simple character from the PHB, and from what I can see, I cant just get the one thing that I want, the basic PHB.
I am truly shocked
No I found it , $30 bucks US of A dollars, done.
Hell it was bloody hard to find, had to scroll across rather than down the page, what kind of mad man designed this web site :)
All good
