It looks great, and I whilst I agree there is room for improvement I still think it’s sick to have it as an app, especially for TT games in RL.
Go have a cup of coffee.
I play at a IRLTT every week and just use the website character sheet. Unless the app can do more, or do the same things better than the website character sheet, I don’t see any point to its existence.
*slurps coffee*
*upends coffee mug overhead*
It will improve with time and I’m lazy and enjoyed having the App to run my character on the fly without needing my web browser, tablet or Mac open!
*Wipes off coffee and dumps the rest of the pot over your head.*
If Safari is open or another app is open, either way it is the same thing. An open app is an open app. I would be running either one on my open iPad, so why do I need an app that does one thing when I could have one that does everything? I usually have 3 tabs open to DDB at the table anyway. If I use that app, then I would need that and Safari open too anyway... or I can just use the browser and not have to switch apps....
You absolutely have me with that last. I therefore hand in my character sheet! Until next time!!
*turns into a bat and flies out the window, but not before opening a vat, drowning the room in gallons of coffee*
*Refills my now empty cup and slurps more.*
Ahhh.
Having the app just makes sure if there is no wifi or whatever you got this going without needing paper just juice in your device

But there’s no DM’s app. If there’s no WiFi, then there’s no game. Besides, I can use my iPad as a mobile hotspot for everyone at no additional charge. (Thank you Verizon!)

Unless you as a player are using the app and your dm isn’t. I did this when I was playing AL games at an FLGS. No public wifi at the shop, but I could use my phone as a mobile hotspot, fortunately. I always brought a print out just in case, but an app that wasn’t dependent on wifi would have been very helpful.

A player can’t even add equipment or change spells on the app as of yet. One long rest and the prepared casters can’t use one of their class features without loading the website.

No, but it still would have given me access to a lot of other stuff, and since I have the compendium app, I could have used it and a piece of scratch paper. Besides which those things will be added. Will the web interface always be better? Yeah, probably. But there are definitely use cases for the app.
Here’s a question for you then. How is the native app supposed to interact with the combat tracker? The goal is supposedly to get sheet, campaign, tracker, dice, etc to all come together into some glorious “Virtual Play Space.” How is that gonna work with a native app?

The native app is not intended for that context: it is intended for folk around a table where there is no wifi access. It’s not a replacement for the web interface, it’s a supplement primarily designed for spaces where there isn’t wifi. Which there was a tremendous hue and cry for before COVID hit. While a “virtual play space” is planned now, that wasn’t the original vision or intent of DDB, which was digital tools primarily for in person tables. In that context, the app makes a Lot of sense, and has a good use case. It doesn’t in the virtual play space, but I think DDB is angling to be both a toolset for folks face to face around a table and eventually an excellent virtual play space. Furthermore,, given that the App does have a “web mode,” it is possible that it might eventually interact with the combat tracker.
I guess I’m just confused why you are so opposed to the app. I understand it isn’t helpful to you. That’s fine. Don’t use it. I agree the web interface is better. The web interface is certainly my first choice under most circumstances. But I can definitely see a use case for the app.
I am well aware of DDB’s original mission. I just feel this app fails to fulfill it. If you cannot even track your ammunition without either opening the website or using pencil and paper and updating it later, then it’s a bad tool. I guess I share Alton Brown’s loathing of “unitasker tools.”

If it stays unable to do track the things you've mentioned, I would agree with you. Given that they are still adding features, I'm not as worried about at the moment.

By the way, I love the Alton Brown reference!
My wife actually took me to see him live two years ago as a Birthday present!
