(My plan was to go in and see what's up, with everyone else covering me. I'm open to do that now if everyone else is, but I thought we were waiting on Horatio's familiar completing it's investigation?)
(OOC - Horatio's familiar was part of the initial perception rolls and information gathered re - the hole near the campsite etc.)
As you approach the camp, you can see that it is indeed empty. A campfire near the tent lies cold and unlit, the tent flaps sway whenever a slight breeze arises.
The hole that Gandalon saw is about 30ft from the camp. It looks like the roof from the corner of a rather old but what appears to be a rather sturdy building. Part of the roof tiling has collapsed in and whoever was here originally has lowered a ladder into the hole.
(OOC - do you wish to search the camp and stay there the night? Remember, it has been the better part of the day that you've travelled and the sun is setting. Alternatively, do you want to push on and climb down the ladder and into the hole?)
Inside the tent, you find several somewhat comfortable bedrolls and blankets. Likewise, there is some rations for your night in as well.
Once you have eaten for the evening and are ready to bed down, let me know what order you'd like to take watch and roll Perception check for your watch.
Horatio will take first watch. His mind is cleared from a few good nights at the tavern, and Gandalon keeps good enough company. Not quite good enough to play chess, yet, but he can cheat at poker just fine. Besides, Horatio prefers uninterrupted sleep - it helps to stave off the worst of any nightmares.
Perception (with adv because of Gandalon helping): 20
Horatio's watch goes on reasonably uneventful. The night is crisp, but not unpleasant and definitely smells nicer here than it did out on the marshes.
Horatio, make a Deception Check for me - DC 17
Samael's watch goes reasonably similar, though at one point you catch a glimpse of what you think is a large green eye, blink, then it's gone. The eye looked to be over near the hole near the campsite, though you don't see it again even after watching more carefully in that direction for a little while longer.
"Is that so? Can't say I saw much of anything, but if our friend is indeed in yon hole, I suggest we make our move. Once we get below, we won't have much access to daylight. For myself, this is not an issue. As for you all... well, perhaps we ought to take some precaution."
Trinjya will ratual cast detect magic and search the tent again looking for anything useful that was left behind, (items, gear, writings that would give a clou on who was camping out here and why...)
Investigation: 17
She will take third watch. (Perception if it still matters: 14
In the morning, Trinjya agrees with Horatio.
"If our quarry is hiding down there let's go and find it."
She is forcing her voice to sound confident though she is worried and hopes the place does not feel too mich like being trapped in a box.
"Unfortunately, while I have no trouble seeing in the dark, I did not bring torches for those who don't."
"I... Cannot see in the dark, nor do I really enjoy the idea of entering it blind. I might have packed a torch in my pack, but I don't think so- maybe some were abandoned here?"
He casts about hopefully, rifling through tents and searching the surroundings where a torch might have stood. Investigation: 21
OOC: I've got an adventuring gear slot if I can't find a torch, but I'd hate to use it on a single torch.
Edit: Thought I had a tinderbox, oops. does anyone have a spare of that or a fiery cantrip?
(OOC - in answer to your questions. The tent had been housing four people originally so there was plenty of room for you. You don't find any torches, however you do find a single lantern, hooded which is also full of oil (6hrs of light).)
The sun rises and the morning air is crisp, with a low fog hanging just above the ground as far as the eye can see. You don't encounter any more overnight, and while you're not sure if this is a good thing or not, you feel rested and ready for the day. After searching the tent more thoroughly now in the daylight, you discover a source of light to take down the hole with you, though strangely still no signs of those that inhabited the tent prior.
The hole in the sunken ceiling awaits you just away from the camp. You suspect that the nothic you followed out here is below, but given what you know (and don't know) about them, what else is down there? Is there anything you wish to do in preparation or discussion before you set out for the day?
I'll ditch some odds and ends (my Adventuring Gear) at camp so I can carry the lantern. I'll leave it under a bedroll so it's sort of hidden. Past that, I think I'm good.

"true. they could think the key to reversion is here."
(calling a warlock, most of whom had to be toadies for their nasty boss, a toad is.....i'm not mad, i'm just bamboozled by the logic in that)
(OOC - so how would you like to approach the camp? Do you want to try and stealthily move up and keep an eye out or just wander in?)

"the camp seems to be in relatively decent condition. we rest here for now before proceeding. night comes, as do horrors."
"Works for me. I can provide rations tonight, but I only brought 1 day's worth."
