Perigord is overjoyed to see these books- as an aspiring adventuring chef, he definitely wants to take one. He'll swap out Fungi of Magic for his coil of rope, which he'll tuck into the bookshelf for safe keeping.
OOC: any chance I can somehow finagle a second book into my potion slots and abandon my messkit?
He will then move to the stairs- but all this inventory management probably took him a while, so I'd say it's up to Trinjya who makes the first check.
@Rotfang- Good point, I guess I'm just used to real time games.
Also, Perigord will snatch Flowers of the Depths for later and hope it's about the depths of the earth and not the depths of the ocean, leaving the messkit on the rope.
The creature behind the desk looks at Samael with its large green eye for a moment, then gnashes its teeth and lets out a low and guttural growl. It points north to a pedestal in the middle of this lower section with a small nod, then picks a book from the desk and opens it, staring at the pages before it. Suddenly though, another of the creatures jumps up from behind some of the bookcases, landing on top of the shelves just north of the stairs you just descended. The old wood creaks and groans with the creature's sudden weight. It calls out with an almost coughing sound, guttural and harsh. It looks at you, gnashing its teeth in a sharp-toothed somewhat-grin, crouching down on its perch atop the bookcase. Another creature also appears, this one on the opposite landing to where you came down the ladder. Its large clawed hands grasp one of the pillars as it stares at you in silence.
The creature atop the bookcase stares at Perigord intently. Perigord, make a Deception Check DC 23.
The other creature standing on the other landing, tilts it head as it looks to Horatio. Horatio, make a Deception Check DC 24.
Samael clears his throat, and as he speaks, he writes on 2 pieces of paper, one in common and one in infernal.
"Greetings, esteemed scholars. I am Samael, emissary of Morn, keeper of the Wizard's tower of the town of Alycron. I am aware of a confrontation at the town's borders that started and ended with blood being shed, and I was sent to resolve the matter peacefully and diplomatically. In order to establish a dialog, I volunteered due to my ability to read every script language on these planes; as I cannot speak these languages, however, I am forced to write in the two that I know. I have acquired some pens and ink beforehand to go with the paper I have to insure that communication can be made possible, and was told they were usable even by dragonborn. If you have any requests or inquiries, i humbly ask for them so that I may Make the situation easier and less stressful for both you and the townsfolk." Then samael bows his head and awaits their response
(Honesty is the best policy here, people. 3 nothics together are a tough cookie, especially when they're together. don't start a fight if you don't think you can win.
also, a little fiat here was used due to the fact that samael would have gone to a bookstore or writing shop to purchase the necessary implements, and he did. it's AG.)
The creature atop the bookcase continues to watch Perigord, though you notice it has stopped staring and will blink occasionally. It makes a guttural coughing-like sound again. It then jumps up onto the low wall that ran between the pillars on the upper level, a clawed hand wrapping around the pillar. It then turns to Trinjya, staring at tiefling as if only noticing you for the first time.
@Kaldaras - make a Deception Check DC 13 please.
Samael, as you hand over the notes, the creature at the desk blinks at you curiously, then at the notes. It takes the papers in its clawed hands, awkwardly trying to hold the paper, piercing it and tearing it in places with its clawed fingers. It blankly stares at the papers but makes no notion that it understands the words, much the same as when it stared at the pages of the book. However, it suddenly notices your mace as the flames lick around the weapon. It points to it, then notions to itself, then holds out a hand as if to take it.
"oh, you're curious about this?" Samael draws the mace in a non threatening manner and places it between him and the nothic. "A frog-king somehow had it in his possession. once my companions and i slew him and his entourage, we took this and other things as spoils of war." Samael, then notices the pedestal, and gestures to it. "out of curiosity, what goes there?"
(side effects of vain hopes: sticking it out until it goes sideways; then again, considering my penchant for collateral.....)
"Maybe you shouldn't let them touch it if it hurts them- I don't think they understand what we're saying, and they probably won't respond well to what could seem like an attack."
Perigord also quickly touches his holy symbol, and his eyes flash white for a second; he's moved closer to the pedestal (within 60 ft) and is using divine sense. It probably won't do much, as it detects celestials, fiends, and undead, but if the pedestal is hallowed that would show up.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(OOC - I wanted to give you some time to react to the nothic reaching out for the mace that you placed on the desk between them. While some of you mentioned it was not a good idea to let the creature touch it, I admit that I can't see any actions there that would suggest you try to stop it trying to grab the mace. As such...)
The nothic picks the mace up, bringing it up to its eye to inspect it closely and almost purring. As it does this however, the flames around the mace lick around the creatures spiked arms and it takes 2 psychic damage. The creature howls in pain and throws Samael's mace back onto the desk, and its clawed hands hold its head. The other two nothics see this and let out a coughing, stilted call, gnashing their teeth. After a moment to recover, the nothic at the desk runs north and around a bookcase, out of your sight, though the other two remain letting out a low growl as they watch you intently.
Samael, as the mace lashes out at the nothic that picked it up, you feel a strange feeling in the deepest corners of your mind. Roll an Insight check for me.
The tome sits on the pedestal still, north a little from the desk. The two nothics that you still see are watching closely, growling and gnashing their teeth at the event that just took place. What would you all like to do?
Perigord rushes over, praying for a peaceful resolution. As he does, his holy symbol flashes as he uses his Channel Divinity: Emissary of Peace to gain +5 to persuasion checks for ten minutes. Speaking in Deep Speech, he attempts to calm down the situation (through gestures as well), and reaches out to touch the nothic to heal it slightly (1 hit point) through lay on hands.
In Deep Speech: "Apologies, the mace harms those who touch it. If you can understand me, know that we bear you no ill will and would like to broker peace with you."
Edit: just reread and saw that the nothic ran away. I guess no lay on hands then.

(OOC - your emissary of peace gives you +5 to persuasion, but I don't see anything there about it giving you the ability to speak Undercommon and that's not one of your languages. You could try deep speech as you know that though?)
Samael searches for the strange feeling, trying to identify it. Was it happiness at seeing the mace induce pain on this creature, or a want for more? You can't make out the exact nature of this feeling, but you definitely know something was strange about it.
OOC: Oops, you're right- I knew I knew one, but not the other. I'll edit it so it's right.
"I didn't realize how powerful that mace is; I thought It might just annoy them, but it appears to have been more hurt. You didn't seem to need any help either- and I'll admit, I got sidetracked by those books."

As the Nothics show up, Trinjya is slowly turning around in a full circle and suppresses the urge to draw her rapier.
"Toadsi...I don't want to belittle your efforts, but they don't look like they understand..this is..."
She trails off noticing one of the creatures is staring at her.

"I will warn you, that it has properties that hurt those that aren't the owner of the mace. not too much, but the sting will be felt for a while."

As you hold up the mace, the nothic reaches out to take the mace.
A closer look at the pedestal, you see a large tome resting atop it. Another body lies on the floor nearby.
Perigord does not see anything with his divine sense.
samael gazes at the tome from a distance, and wonders about its significance.

Samael turns to Perigord and asks, calmly, after making apologetic gestures, "and you did not assist me before, why?"
(I'd genuinely like to know, murfle......)
