Red Larch has been an important stop on the Long Road for two centuries now. Named for a distinctive stand of red larch trees that were cut down when the hamlet was founded, Red Larch became a settlement in the first place thanks to a drinkable spring that fed a sizable pond ideal for watering horses, oxen, and pack mules. An east-west trail meets the Long Road at the pond, running west to the logging community of Kheldell and east to Bargewright Inn and eventually Secomber. Another trail leads to quarries in the Sumber Hills and to ruins of stone keeps long ago left to monsters and outlaws (the Haunted Keeps). In recent years, new quarries have been opened on the northwestern edge of town. So far these have yielded up great slabs of marble much prized in Waterdeep for facing large new buildings and repairing older edifices. Red Larch is also a center for stonecutters quarrying slate on the fringes of the Sumber Hills.
While Red Larch remains prosperous, dark omens are appearing. The heart of the Sumber Hills has become far more dangerous, with monsters lurking seemingly everywhere (no one goes into the hills berry-picking or hare-hunting these days, though Red Larcher children traditionally did so daily in summer and fall). Banditry is on the rise, and the weather seems to be getting more severe and more unpredictable. Several Red Larcher shepherds have seen strange figures watching them from distant hillsides in the wild fields east of town where they have traditionally grazed their flocks. Quarry workers used to cut by torchlight when orders were backing up but do so no longer, shunning the pits by night. They are spooked by rumors of dark-robed figures in stone masks lurking in the darkness beyond the torchlight. The townsfolk fear that dangerous times are at hand, but no one seems to know what to do about it.
Welcome! I am an experienced 5e DM looking to run my first PBP game using Princes of the Apocalypse. Though that is the basis for this campaign I will not hold the group strictly to that adventure. If you are interested please fill out the form below and describe a level 2 character. No homebrew, but CR and UA are allowed. Standard array or point buy will be used for ability scores. Play will take place entirely on dndbeyond.
RP Experience: have participated in two RL D&D campaings, one still going strong. Furthermore, I am in multiple PbP's on RPGGeek and dndbeyond currently, started a month or 2 ago.
Backstory: Orifrac comes from one of the barbarian mountain tribes, where he was raised by his parents to be a stoneworker. He mastered the craft well, and soon become one of the better stoneworkers in his clan. However, he wanted more in life than just staying at his clan working stones; so after some time he left his clan to travel. Not long after he came upon the quarries of Red Larch. He never worked with Marble before so he found this to be an interesting next stop. for the next year he worked as an apprentice at one of the Marble master's of Red larch, and since a couple of months he is working on his own. Making statues from the marble and bringing them to some of the wealthy in both Waterdeep and Neverwinter. Last week he saw one of the dark-robed figures, which gave him a good scare, but also lit up the fire, which made him leave his clan, again; that there is more to life than just stoneworks, that maybe he should use his strength to protect his people as well.
Why are you in Red Larch?: As said in the backstory I came past here and have been working with marble since.

Not long after, Hadi noticed that he had himself started to develop new magical abilities. Why are you in Red Larch?: He has seen visions of his peoples foes, the elemental evils of water, near the town of Red Larch, and is heading there to investigate.
Character Name: Nariah Fairgrove (I played in a failed pbp of PotA before with this character, thus the pointed backstory.)
Race/Class: Half-Elf Warlock (Fey Pact)
Backstory:
My sister and I were inseperable. We worked for our father, a human merchant who ran a little farmer’s market. I was the one who did the selling, she kept things organized and good looking. It was a provincial little life, but we were happy. My mother, I never met. She met my father in our local inn as she was travelling through. She returned 9 months later with two bundles and a sack of gold. My father used that money to provide a good life for us, then left it and the business to us when he passed away.
The Harald came into our lives. A silver-tongued bard named Harald Grayspear Set up shop in our town. My sister was smitten. Unfortunately, he was a villian. He used my sister to get access to the gold, and killed her and burned down our home when she tried to stop him.
I was grief stricken. I ran into the woods screaming. I wanted him to PAY. I called out for help, stumbling through the woods, not noticing the faerie ring that brought me to HER. The most beautiful and terrible thing I have seen, I can’t describe the presence. She offered me power beyond imagining if I used it to help women in need. She promised me one day I would kill Harald Grayspear. Then she returned me to the world. It was months later, our home and business were rebuilt by a newcomer, I had nowhere to turn. I made my way through the world conning and thieving. I learned to survive. And I helped women.
She came to me in dreams, teaching me power beyond imagining. I learned to do so much more than other mortals. I was touched by her presence, I scoured Faerun, helping those who needed it, stealing from those who could afford it. My reputation grew. And I sought after Harald. He calls himself Windharrow now, supposedly. Rumors put him in the Dessarin Valley, that’s where I shall be.
Why are you in Red Larch?: Looking for Harald Grayspear.

Timezone: +10 GMT (AEST) RP Experience: Various computer games, before finally getting into 5e via pbp here on DDB. Been playing via pbp since 2017.
Name: Sem Race: Reborn (UA)(being played as a fungal construct, born of a goblin corpse) Class: Druid - Circle of Spores Background: Reborn of Decay (Custom: 2 skills, 1 tool, 1 language, using Undercity Paths feature from Golgari Agent) Backstory:
Sem was awoken in the sewers by Glen Boletus, a Reclaimer of the Circle of Decay. Glen explained that Sem had been given a second chance by the cycle, that he had been reborn for some purpose unknown.
Over the next months and years, Sem trained with the druids leaning their ways and recovering some of his former memories. During this time Sem became a Reclaimer, helping the druids tend to the gardens of fungal growths that help keep the city sewers clear and helping to treat the sewage to produce clean water and rich soil to be exported to the surrounding farms.
Recently the High druid of the circle had a vision of Sem leaving the city. After some discussion between the elders it was decided that Sem should leave to seek out and discover his purpose.
So Sem, equipped with some basic gear, is now exploring the world, looking to find his purpose, the reason the cycle didn't take him, but gave him his new life.
Personality:
Personality Traits: I love the peace of the dark and the comfort of decay. I am searching for my purpose, I am open to exploring many possibilities. Ideals: Stoicism. All of us are part of the cyclical march of nature, which will continue with or without our consent. Bonds: I am forever grateful to the reclaimer who found me floating facedown in the sewer, giving me a new chance at life. Flaws: My beliefs about death and the cycle are unconventional by normal standards and this can cause friction in civilised society.
Description:
Sem is a little goblin with fungal growth all over his body. In particular, there appear to be gashes and cuts on his small body that have been filled in by fungus. His eyes are milky white, but he still seems to be able to see.
Sem is generally calm and quiet, unrushed by the goings on around him. But in a fight an almost sinister mood overtakes him. Thankfully this passes quickly when hostilities end. Sem is otherwise friendly and curious about the wider world.
Sem is a druid of the circle of decay and has an unusual relationship with death and the dead. To Sem, death is a natural part of the cycle and many forms of undeath are just another step along a different part of the cycle. Having said that, undead that refuse to submit to eventual decay or who are immune to it (Vampires, Ghosts, etc) are looked at as troubled individuals who are going to need help moving on.
Why are you in Red Larch?: Sem is travelling, looking for his purpose and is open to finding it anywhere, in anything.
RP experience: Been playing on here for about a year now. I have DM'd a few games.
Char name: Julisa
Race/Class: Tiefling Cleric1/Rogue1
Backstory:
Julisa grew up in an orphanage in Waterdeep. She was a lonely child, ostracized by the other children due to her hellish visage. She was always talking to her imaginary friend Sha'do.
As she got older, and into more trouble, strange things began to happen at the orphanage, shadows seemed to move on their own, nightmares were shared by several children at once. The matron called in the Clerics of Mystra to find the cause of the occurrences. They found the source of the magic emanating from Julisa. She was taken in by the order and they began to try and train her to be a cleric.
She quickly realized she could hear a voice from beyond but that voice wasn't Mystra, it was Sha'do's voice. Finally able to realize her friend wasn't imaginary she began to ask Sha'do questions, finding out Sha'do was a Shagar-kai from the the Shadowfell. Her training did not go well and she soon left the order falling into a pattern of drunken nights, all the while Sha'do whispering in her ear the whole time.
During a long night of drinking Julisa rebuffed advances from a group of young humans. They followed her out of the tavern calling after her and finally chasing her into a dead end alley and began assaulting her. The voice of Sha'do became a roar in her head and suddenly two glowing purple blades of pure energy erupted from her fists. Fighting back she quickly incapacitated two of the men while the other two fled. As she began to fall unconscious Julisa heard the slow clapping of hands spun and her around to find a half-elf man standing at the entrance to the alley.
Upon waking in strange surroundings the man sitting in a chair nearby congratulated her on fighting off the men and introduced himself as Yellon, an agent of the Harpers. He asked about the blades he saw her manifest and she had no recollection of that happening. Curious, he offered to take her in and to train her to use her abilities to serve the greater good of Waterdeep. She now uses her skills to infiltrate the corrupt organizations that liter her city and root out the evil within, the whole time hearing the shadows talking to her urging her to let go and embrace the shadows.
Why are you in Red Larch: The Harpers have sent her to investigate the rise in banditry and she has heard rumors of masked figures hiding in the shadows.
Your Name: Francis, but you can call me Fekor if you like (I'm more used to read that name and know that it is me).
Your Age: 24

RP Experience: I'm currently in 1 PbP (no real life experience in D&D), but I've done some written roleplay in another app (called Amino).
Character Name: Steven Collins.
Race/Class: Half-orc Monk.
Backstory:
Born from a human father and an orc mother, Steven lived his life in his father's town, Red Larch. He was a peaceful kid with some friends.
There were a group of kids that bullied him for been a half-orc, but every time they bullied him, he just ignored them or ran away. Until one day the bullies were atacking one of Steven's friends and enraged he fought them back, leaving one of the bullies badly injured and himself very scared of what he could do if he allowed his orc heritage uncontroled, so he left to a monastery that worships the goddess of peace Eldath to train his self-control.
Now after years of training, Steven leaves the monastery to test his training and help people along the way in his travels.
Why are you in Red Larch?: He came back to his hometown to test his training and help people along the way in his travels.
My Age: 29 (getting far too close to 30 for my own comfort)
Timezone: EST
RP Experience: I've been a player in two multi-year campaigns, as well as a few shorter campaigns during that time. I've also recently taken up DM'ing my own long-term campaign in the past few years. However, I've never done a PbP and I've mainly stuck with a select group of friends, so I'm branching out!
Character Name: Tuuli Ausrussa
Race/Class: Wood Elf Ranger
Backstory: Even from a young age, Tuuli realized there was something oddly peculiar about her compared to the other wood elves of her clan. Tuuli often heard voices and whispers on the wind - voices she assumed had come from her fellow elves. Yet almost every time her fellows would deny having said anything, leaving Tuuli confused and worried. Eventually Tuuli was brought before the spiritual elders of her people, who gently suggested to her that she should take some time away from the clan - both to find answers for herself and to put the others of the clan at ease. Thus, Tuuli set out on her own spirit walk, guided by the whispers of the wind. Though she has spent many years traveling across the Savage Frontier, she has yet to fully understand why the wind speaks to her or even what it wants from her. What it has done is guided her here, to Red Larch. The whispering wind speaks to her of growing danger, a danger that threatens the worlds of nature and man alike. It is time for Tuuli to prove herself worthy.
Why I'm in Red Larch: Tuuli was brought here by the Whispering Winds, which have so far guided her on a spiritual journey of self-reflection and growth.
RP Experience: Lots of pbp, as a player and DM for several years, some irl, and a bit of online real-time
Character Name: Wolfe
Race/Class: Fallen Aasimar/bard
Backstory: Wolfe was raised amongst devil worshipers, a priest of evil himself for a time. I want to do a tandem backstory with another player where he was rescued from that life over a series of social encounters by another PC, and is now looking to get out and help.
Why are you in Red Larch?: Escaping the cultists who lurk nearby
RP Experience: Well, where to start. Been playing for about 35 years, all kinds of RPGs but mostly AD&D. Just recently started with PbP though but I enjoy it a lot.
Character Name: Sir Myles Oberon
Race/Class: Human/Warlock
Backstory: Myles was born into the wealthy patriar family of Oberon in the city of Baldurs gate. Always a spoiled child he grew up to really care for only one thing, carousing, but in that area he excelled. Being a second son he was not to inherit the family business, not that he ever wanted to, but as he wasn´t exactly the pride of his family he was sent on the road to not further embarass his father. Resentful, Myles begrudgingly left Baldurs gate, bringing a "keepsake" from his fathers office, a strange rod that his father had collected after it recently had been discovered in distant ruin. That night a voice whispered in the darkness, luring Myles into a pact to gain eldritch powers in exchange for only one little thing, his soul. The voice told him that the rod was just a piece of a staff of great power, and that he would use it to find the still missing pieces of this staff. So Sir Myles travelled Farûn in search for the next missing piece and one day reached the sleepy hamlet of Red Larch.
Why are you in Red Larch?: Searching for the next piece of the staff hidden somewhere in the area, probably guarded by evil forces from the outer planes.
RP Experience: Have played 5e for ~5 years, entirely in PbP format. Several long running campaigns, many more that fizzled out early.
Character Name: Kassar
Race/Class: Tortle Druid (Circle of Stars)
Backstory: Kassar had lived a simple life as far back as he can remember. Even growing in his family's ancestral swamp with dozens of siblings and several generations of elders, he always perfered quiet and solitude. The young tortle would often venture to the far reaches of the swamp near the cliff's edge late at night to sit in silence and watch the stars move slowly through the dark sky. Often, Elder Yurk would join Kassar at the cliff's edge, teaching Kassar about the heavenly bodies and their connection to the natural world's past, present, and future.
When Elder Yurk passed, Kassar brought the body to the cliff's edge to return the old tortle to the planet. Kassar meditated in solitude for several weeks, trying desperately to find meaning. In the stars, he began to read a portent of things to come. Though the meaning was not clear, one thing was certain, the young tortle must forge his own path away from the safety of the swamp. He awoke, as if from a dream, and set out from his home to parts unknown. He let the skies lead him where they may. Throughout his wanderings he has grown in confidence and ability, and now the stars lead him to Red Larch where his next steps await.
Why are you in Red Larch?: A prophecy read in the stars led Kassar to this land, where something dark has begun to take root and needs to be culled before it is allow to grow and fester.
Backstory: Valor Dayne was born to Elspeth Dayne of Waterdeep. The Dayne Family is a minor noble family, with a minor fortune made through their breeding and raising of high quality horses. Valor's father was never publicly known, and Valor himself was not privy to the information. Though it was a minor scandal, Valor was naturalized by the Lord's Council--and a suitable "donation" from the Dayne Family. However, he was prevented from ever inheriting the family fortune due to his status. He was cloistered as a child as his family was unsettled by his golden eyes and his almost flat demeanor. When he was barely 10 years old, his grandfather, Lord Talorin Dayne decided to give Valor to the Church of Tyr, with whom the Dayne family had a good relationship. Valor was sent to Summit Hall in the Dessarin Valley to be raised and trained by the Knights of Samular, until he reached the age of maturity, when he would be expected to either take the vows and join the order, or to find his own path in the world.
Why are you in Red Larch?: As is common for the Knights of Samular, Valor was sent to Red Larch to complete a quest before he would take his vows and officially join the Order. He was sent to Red Larch following dark omens from his master, and encouraged that he would "know his quest when it was presented to him." Accompanying him are his pages, Kayt and Wat, and his older family servant Roland (Knight Background).

Name: Sem
Race: Reborn (UA) (being played as a fungal construct, born of a goblin corpse)
Class: Druid - Circle of Spores
Background: Reborn of Decay (Custom: 2 skills, 1 tool, 1 language, using Undercity Paths feature from Golgari Agent)
Backstory:

Character Name: Kassar
Race/Class: Tortle Druid (Circle of Stars)
Backstory:
Kassar had lived a simple life as far back as he can remember.

Character Name: Valor Dayne
Race/Class: Aasimar Paladin
