Mara watched as Arjun Chopin pointedly ignored Thom's outstretched hand, shaking her head with a sigh at the impoliteness. Focusing back on the amended clause for the payment contract, she nods along with Teswan's words in understanding and then more firmly with satisfaction as she finished reading, finally jotting down her second signature, opting for the payment over time. Smiling at the dwarf and gnome's praise, the halfling responded, "I should hope so. I've been running Miracle Remedies Incorporated for enough years to make me a rather savvy business woman." Mostly.
Snorting a little at Oberyos' half hearted attempt to think of what Arjun brought to the group, Mara nodded, seconding Brandon's prompt as she looked at Teswan. "Yes, where do we start?"
Teswan looks around each of you, making eye contact and ensuring he has the full attention of you all before continuing. "Yes, yes, where to go next. Well, let me tell you the tale of a small village, it was a prosperous mining village that was locally known for platinum production. A village named Vermeillon." He pauses and you can see he quickly scans each face for any recognition of the name.

"The village seemed to disappear completely from any records close with the last three score years. We believe that the location of the village is contained within an account of it's demise. This is the book I mentioned. We believe the book to have until recently been located in ten towns and has now made it's way to Candlekeep. This is where you come in. The consortium wishes you to enter Candlekeep to divulge whatever information this book holds regarding Vermillion, the mine, and what happened to it. After that, send word to our agencies in Baldurs Gate and continue forwards with your search for the mine's location. From there I expect your hands-on skillset will most likely take the fore."
"You can choose whatever route you wish to get to Candlekeep, and I can assist with the necessary funds for your journey - though I shan't be covering excessive luxury or frivolities. No, we must stay practical and functional first. Any questions so far?"

Mara didn't recognize the name itself, but was intrigued about this missing city. Or perhaps simply destroyed and lost through time? At mention of Candlekeep however, the wizard's green eyes lit up in excitement. Nodding in understanding of the plan, she then questioned, "And has the consortium made Candlekeep aware of our visit? Or are we to secure entry ourselves?" Under the belief that it wasn't as easy as just walking in.
Teswan nods and smiles at Mara's question, "I'm glad to see one of our wizards is aware of the entry restrictons, yes, very glad. It appears we chose well. The consortium have several leads on pieces of work that should secure you entry, one here in Neverwinter, and two others in Waterdeep. I have tried to acquire the piece here but unfortunately the current custodian and I couldn't come to an agreement. Now, you are welcome to try for that one, or either of the ones in Waterdeep, or of course you can follow your own leads should you have resources or leads that we do not..."
"Can't we just get in like any other town. Walk in the gate and maybe bribe a gate guard?" Arjun asks, looking a little confused at the comments.
"Ah, unfortunately not, let me explain. Access to Candlekeep requires those wishing to enter to provide a document of suitable worth which is not already within Candlekeep's extensive collection. That will allows you to then gain access to the book you seek. Oh, that reminds me, I should probably tell you the title of the book we believe holds the key to the mine's location. 'A Deep and Creeping Darkness'."
Brandon doesn’t even blink at the name of Vermeillon, nor does he try to search his memory for it. He was just a young lad 60 years ago, too young to care much about lost towns, even those with mines. Likewise the name of the book they are seeking in Candlekeep means nothing to him.
His eyebrows arch at the discussion of Candlekeep’s “entrance fee” - seems like the consortium wasn’t doing them any favors so far. “So, what are the names and locations of these documents we need to seek out. Both here and Waterdeep if you please. If the local collector couldn’t work out a deal with you, I doubt we would fare much better. We may need to go farther afield to get what we need.”
Bowing her head in recognition of the flattery, Mara then focused on how they would be accomplishing their goals. Clicking her tongue in mild annoyance when Arjun interrupted with his crass assumptions. "One does not simply walk into Candlekeep."
The name of the book they were truly searching for in the depths of that enormous library didn't ring any particular bells for her other than give a mild sense of foreboding and instead she focused back on what was brought up originally. "It wouldn't hurt to try the 'current custodian' in possession of the piece here in Neverwinter Mr. Brandon. Worst case scenario we're delayed a few hours to a day before continuing on to Waterdeep." Shrugging before looking at the rest of the (competent) group members, namely Brandon, Thom, hesitantly at Oberyos and not a glance spared towards Arjun.
Then an unsavory thought occurred to her and she asked Teswan, "You and the consortium are sure that just one of these works are sure to gain our entire group entry?"
((I'm a sucker, sue me. Just finished watching the extended edition of the trilogy last week.))

Teswans sits quietly as the group start their discussions, nodding at the assessments and shuffling through yet more documents at Brandon's query. "Ah, the pieces of work are as follows. In NeverWinter, a copy of 'The Sundering' translated into draconic, currently located at a shop called 'Paper Wyrm' the proprietors name is a Mrs Alyssina Vass. In Waterdeep, the first is a series of short works following Volothamp Geddarm, written by a goblin of all things and the piece is in the private collection of a Mister Edlanar Holbrook. The final piece can be found in the university library, and is a tale of something called Bhaalspawn, produced by a former occupant of Candlekeep named Gorion. Any one of these would allow the entire group in, according to all the information we have."
"Why don't we just steal the book here? We're heading out of town anyway and ain't no-one said we can't break a law or two. Might be some other trinkets which can line our pockets for the trip." Arjun asks the group, as though it is the most obvious answer to a question no-one wanted to ask.
Thom puffs his chest up and out at the mention of stealing something. "I will not be part of stealing something. Arjun, we will find the LEGAL way to do this."
Mara used her still present magically conjured quill to scribble down the names, locations and owners of the books they were currently in search of. Without looking up as Arjun was quick to propose thievery and of course Thom was just as quick to object, she explained logically, "As easy as it might seem to take advantage of our already planned exit to do a 'grab and go' Mr. Chopin, Mrs. Vass could be deaf and blind and still have the wherewithal to connect Mr. Tu's recent inquiry into 'The Sundering' and it's sudden disappearance. Which our employers would likely not appreciate." Finally finishing writing and looking up at Teswan with a smile. "Abiding the law generally isn't quite as 'fun', but generally makes ones life less complicated. Where might the Paper Wyrm be located in the city?"
Brandon is not surprised Arjun suggested thievery, someone always does, but he was glad to see Thom and Mara dismiss the idea nonetheless. “Aye, lad. Thieving the book is no good. Will lead to both the collector and the guard on our trail. Not good business.”
He glances at Mr. Tu “But if the consortium couldn’t persuade Mrs. Vass, I am not sure we can. But I agree we should seek her out while we are here, perhaps we can offer something the consortium could not."
"Now before we leave, Mr. Tu, how about that upfront expense payment?"
Arjun crosses his arms and buffs as everyone else dismisses his suggestion. Teswan seems relieved that no-one else sides with the illegal acquisition, "A most excellent decision, yes, most excellent. An entirely above board accounting is certainly better for us all. I hope you have more luck with Ms. Vass than I then, she really did not want to part the piece, that is the only reason that I can imagine for the price she set. The Paper Wyrn can be found in the docks district. Mr. Ironwood, as soon as you let me know your costs I shall cover them. You understand that I can't just dole out random coin and expect you to gave the added complication of keeping receipts as well. No, no, much easier this way. You can find me at the guildhouse most hours."
With the business of the meeting concluded, Teswan issues you each with some coin towards the night's lodging and he informs you that there are a few rooms usually available at the PRancing Faun should you wish to speak to the barkeep about their hire - unless you have your own accomodation that you would prefer to retrn to. He scribbles down a few notes in what you assume to be an accounting ledger, before he packs away his documents and bids you all a good night, shaking each of your hands enthusiastically. The look of satisfaction is clear on his face, and his eagerness is more than a little contagious, leaving you all feeling in better spirits than when you had arrived at the rundown tavern for a meeting that could have been about pretty much anything. Teswan heads out of the room that you have all been meeting in and you can hear him discussing the bill with the barkeep in the taproom.

Your time working in the city guard has shown that whilst businesses keep odd hours, especially at the docks where commerce flows like the tide, most legitimate businesses would be closed for the day now. Though you are not familiar with Neverwinter, a small bookshop that trades in high value items is somewhere you would expect to see in the more affluent markets, and not in a dockside district typically known to be a little rowdier and prone to criminal activities.
Mara
You know that many businesses open late to catch extra hours of custom, especially in the poorer areas, where every coin traded matters. The chances of a bookshop dealing in high value items having not locked up when night falls would be an invitation for drunkards and less legitimate visitors. You also understand that shops trading in high value items near the docks may have some association to smugglers, where coin is ready and questions are few.
