The sound Evy makes when Val strains to lift the cart may be a snort, or she may have sneezed. But she goes on, “Oh, we know Waukeen’s chosen, the family business is… trading, after all. But what misbegotten trade has you all the way out here?”

The elf looks at Val's reddening face and then at Evy, his raised eyebrows revealing a bit of surprise. "Perhaps we can find something to use as leverage," he offers. He begins casting about for a fallen tree branch or something else to use to help Val get the cart off the ground. As he is doing so, he answers Evy. "Just passing through," he says. "I'm a fairly new Goldeye, and I've been sent south," he says. "I decided to take the most direct route, but your mountains did a number on my cart." He finds a tree branch and brings it over, leveraging it and offering the end to Val. "Perhaps this will make it easier."
Val pushes with all his might on the branch. Sloooooowly, the front of the wagon lifts off the ground. The elf takes a deep breath. "Hold it there," he says, sounding less sure of this plan. He ducks under and begins hammering on things underneath the wagon. After a few minutes, he climbs back out. "OK, you can lower it back down. That should hold long enough for me to get to the village." He brushes his hands together. "Thank you both so much. Before you go, is there anything I can do for you?"
Evy smiles sweetly. “Actually, we’re looking for a monstrosity that eats villagers and turns apples rotten. Big thing, snake head and snakes for arms? I don’t suppose you’ve seen it.”

The priest asks a few surface questions about the thessalhydra, which the cousins have no trouble answering. Finally, the priest offers, "Often lesser monsters worship bigger ones. There are troglodytes in a set of caverns I passed on my way here. They might know something about the thessalhydra." He pauses to think. "I might have seen some apple trees near there."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Strange... None in town or palace mentioned troglodytes." Val wonders out loud. "I don't doubt your wisdom, but you'd figure this would not be the first time we'd have heard of them."
OOC: Have the cousins heard or faced troglodytes before, outside anything Sir Tristan/followers/villagers might have mentioned? History check: 14
While you've been busy making a name for yourself since you arrived, you really haven't been here that long. Sir Tristan's kingdom still holds some mysteries. You don't remember hearing about troglodyte caves, but there certainly could be some.
"I didn't see any of the troglodytes myself," the elf replies. "I was warned by a kind local. But seeing as I was warned, I have to assume that no, the troglodytes are not known to be very friendly. Perhaps they can be bribed. I'm not very familiar with the race myself."
The priest gives directions, which are the way you are already traveling. Would you like to head straight there? There are two more stops where the thessalhydra has attacked on the way that were first told you at the castle.
OOC > We should definitely stop by the other places before confronting the creature (or its minions/worshippers).
Evy considers the priest's words. "It seems more a beast than a creature who would entertain fealty, from what we have heard. Could it be more intelligent than we have been given to believe?" She looks at the elf squarely. "You would not consider joining us on this quest, I suppose? Free the and from peril, perhaps find treasure, or earn the goodwill of Sir Tristan, perhaps a trade route through his lands?"

OOC > "Free the and from peril"? That's a bunch of autocorrect there, and I have no recollection of what I meant to say, so I'm going to let it stand because it sounds vaguely correct and maybe a little chaotically confusing, which seems right from Evy. I'm starting to think, as I play her more, that maybe the chaos infusing her being should make her a little, just a slight bit, unhinged. :)

OOC: I figured it was land. Free the land from peril.
The elf smiles. "Oh, I wouldn't be much help, I don't think. I am simply a priest, not a cleric. Waukeen has not blessed me with any supernatural abilities. Perhaps one day, but not yet. I should continue on my way. I am needed elsewhere. Perhaps another may take you up on your offer."
After a few more meaningless good-byes, the elf climbs onto his wagon and spurs his animal forward, heading back the way the tiefling cousins had come.
Val and Evy continue along the road, aiming for the next place they were told might offer some information. They reach a small group of three homes. They can see individuals milling about as they approach. A sallow-faced halfling woman who appears stops and watches the cousins. Her expression is hard to read, but when she speaks, the cousins can hear disdain in her tone. "What do you want?" she asks. She's holding a large basket that, as far as Evy and Val can see, is empty.
Also nearby is a young halfling boy playing with a cat and another woman sweeping the inside of her home with the door open. You can't tell if she's human, elf or half-elf. Walking up, you had seen a male, but they're no longer in sight.
Val does not prolong the farewell with the Waukeenite.
When spoken to by the sallow-faced, disdainful halfling, Val senses their presence might not be welcomed. He cuts straight to the chase: "Thessalhydra, the many-headed monsters terrorizing folk around this area. Do you know anything about it?"
Evy rolls her eyes as Val gets right to it. “What my cousin means to say is, good day and and a fine one to you, and then, yes, we are tasked with removing the snakey beast from these lands, and you can help us by telling us anything you know of it.”

The halfling is clearly surprised by the responses. Her face slackens, and the hardness of her eyes vanishes. "Oh." She looks over her shoulder and then back. Leaning a little bit forward, she says in a loud whisper. "Head into those woods over there," she says, gesturing with her head. "I'll meet you there in a minute." Without waiting for a response, she turns and hurries straight toward one of the houses.
The direction she gestured toward is to your right. The house is almost straight ahead, but a little to the left.
Val got the answer he was waiting for. "Heave-ho!"
