Evy gives him a shrewd look. "As I recall, the first time wasn't all that bad. At least, that's what you told Darvid." She skips ahead, her mood suddenly frisky.

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. Here's my D&D stuff. I love it so.
You walk about 20 feet into the trees, stopping when it becomes difficult to see the buildings anymore, as you assumed that was the reason for the halfling's instructions. The thought of your knife, Evy, makes you realize there has been a low tingle coming from it since approaching the buildings.
Not quite five minutes later, you hear a pair of footsteps. You turn toward the sound and a little while later, the halfling who directed you into the trees and another come into view coming from a different direction than you had come. The two halflings are about the same height, but the second looks masculine with a stubbed face and large hands. He is wearing similarly worn and rugged clothes to the woman, though his boots appear heartier. He is also carrying an axe, but not in a threatening way.
The two stop about five feet away, and the woman looks in the direction of the buildings, her head moving this way and that on her neck as if making sure you all are hidden. "Sorry for this," the woman finally says quietly, "but your kind are not looked upon favorably." She lifts a hand and mimics the shape of a horn as if her words were not plain enough. "This is my husband, Belvias." Belvias gives a little nod and mumbles something unintelligible in greeting. "Tell him what you told me about the creature."
Evy frowns just a little at the racism, but recovers herself to smile again. Still, her tail twitches. "Of course. My name is Pensevelyn Rilanoth. My cousin and I have been tasked by Sir Tristan with removing the snake-headed monster that has been threatening the land. While we expect we are up to the task, we are looking to get every advantage by listening to those that have encountered it, or heard about it firsthand. We had hope that you might have somewhat to tell us that could help."
Val fail to see the need to add anything to what Evy just said, especially after the racist tones this conversation started with. Although he is not anticipating trouble just yet, he remains ready to throw down if need be. With a couple of steps, he makes sure he is the closest tiefling to the elves, just in case.
Belvius's jaw moves, and he reaches up to scrape between two teeth before replying, "It was here. Took Halos. At least we think it did. It was here, and we haven't seen Halos since."
"Diada saw it," Belvius's wife adds, looking pleased with herself.
"If that's so, then why isn't Diada in this little meeting with us?" Val asks directly. After shifting his weight to the other foot, he adds: "And are you saying that the monster came here and simply took one person away? The monster that has murdered and destroyed elsewhere resorted to simple kidnapping when visiting your hamlet?"
Belvius's eyes shift toward Val. "Cause Diada ain't gonna talk to two devils like you."
"Belvius," his wife hisses. She smiles at the cousins apologetically.
Belvius shifts the axe to his other hand and swings it up to rest on his shoulder. "It was the middle of the day about a tenday ago. Halos, Eofice and me was working. Eofice was tendin' to an animal. I think it was a cow. Maybe a horse. I was in the trees, and Halos was in the field. Diada says she was out in the yard when she heard some kind of animal in the field. She looked that way and saw it, but it was afar off, so she wasn't sure what it was. But she could tell it was big. She called the kids inside and then found Eofice. But by the time he got out there, there was no sign of it. Just a place in the field that was mighty disturbed. And Halos hasn't been seen since. We figure he was swallered."
"She said it looked kind of like a dire wolf," Belvius's wife adds, "but it had something like a flock of birds flying around its head. She figured it must have disturbed a nesting tree." Her hands come together in a roiling ball. "We only heard later that it must have been this thistle-hydra. It sounds terrible. We're glad to hear Sir Tristan is trying to hunt it down. Aren't we, Belvius?"
Val listens while wishing to mimic the man's gestures with his own weapon. Nonetheless, the tiefling does not want to unnecessarily provoke the simple man and, as such, abstains from drawing his blade. Instead, he draws another short question: "Was there any blood on the disturbed field?"
Evy nods at Val’s question. “This monster has not been shown to be… delicate. Do you get many dire wolves in these parts, that Diada would think this were one?”
"There might have been some blood," Belvius replies. "Spots maybe. Not a pool or puddle. It's hard to tell on the crops that's growing, but they'd seen if there was a lot of it, and there wasn't."
"Not really," Belvius's wife says to Evy. "There's wolves in the mountains, but we don't usually get them down here. It's just the only thing she knew to compare it to not ever seeing a thistle-hydra afore."
Belvius continues with Val, scrunching up his face. "I don't know if there was anything like that." He looks at his wife. "Do you know if there were any tools found?"
The woman shrugs. "Eofice, Sylbyn and Diada didn't say anything about any tools. I'm not sure what Halos was doing in the field that day, so I don't know if he'd had any tools."
"You have any idea where this thing is hiding?" Belvius asks. "I hear'd it's attacked more than just us."
Evy nods and thanks the halflings for their help, if not with her whole heart. As she and Val walk away, she lets out a long sigh, her earlier mood vanished.
”That left me wanting to kill something,” she eventually comments.

If Evy is moving into the woods, so is Val.
“Come on, slowpoke. The faeries aren’t going to get you,” Evy teases.

He smirks guiltily and follows.

"Or perhaps a tool the victim left behind... a piece of cloth?" Val adds.
