"Well, now wouldn't this be cozy, that is if we knew where we were and had clothes on!!" Sindri's voice gets more shrill as she finishes her sentence, and you can tell she is on the verge of panic. "Ouch! Maybe I should have fried you, chicken!"She goes over to one of the logs and puts her head between her knees, trying to calm herself.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Ok, a chicken did not make that campfire." Lefaris says as she eyes the campfire. She moves around the area looking for any signs of who might have made the fire.
Sindri, seeing your distress the chicken wanders over to you and gives you a questioning look. PWOK?
Lefaris as you approach the fire you see four bundles set neatly on the ground. They appear to be garments; appropriately sized for each member of your group. They are all neatly folded atop four back packs with what looks like four wooden swords resting atop the bundles.
You are all suddenly struck by the aroma of cooking meat as you spy a plate of what appear to be freshly cooked pork chops sitting to the side of the fire.
"Please... help yourselves." The voice comes from the foot of a nearby tree where you see now a bald, bearded man sitting crossed legged with a broad smile on his face.
Chonk smiles and nods to the bald bearded man. There is no doubt that the silent greeting is cover for a distrust in the whole turn of events. His eyes primarily remain focused on the man, glancing only occasionally away as he sidesteps to make his way to the bundle that has the dwarf-sized clothes.
”May I?”Chonk motions to the bundle.
Assuming that the invite was for more than the food, Chonk will dress himself and inspect the contents of the backpack.
”Thank you for your kindness. To whom do we have the pleasure of meeting?”
The air of mistrust dissipates as he eyes the simple garments; an urge to be clothed, to stop feeling the breeze... everywhere. A back that surprisingly looks decently made to hold all sorts of items and a wooden blade that looks... serviceable.
The food is another matter. Yes, it smelt glorious - enough to make his stomach suddenly vast and empty. But... that was a level trust he could not clear yet.
"First, we need answers. What's going on? What's with this dream?"The half-orc adjusts the backpack on his shoulders.
As the chicken gives her a sideways glance of concern, Sindri can't help but smile at it, "Well aren't you something. Got a name?"
She just stares as the man comes into focus among the party, she doesn't think it would matter if it was a unicorn or a man, not sure if anything could really surprise her anymore at the moment. But when he makes his offer...
"Clothes!!" Sindri jumps up from the log, then remembers she is stark naked and quickly rolls into a ball again. "Agh! Would any of you be so kind in handing me the gnome sized clothing over there?"
Lefaris smiles and grabs the bundle of smallish clothes, handing it over to Sindri. As the other woman dresses, Lefaris moves to the food, taking a portion out with her fingers and taking a bite, not overly concerned with the warmth of the food. "Nice." She says as she tastes the chop. "She settles down near the bundle of what are likely clothes for her and eats as she takes in the man. "So why exactly are you glad we came. It is not exactly as if we were given a choice in the matter."
At you request for a name Sindri the chicken gives an enthusiastic reply... PWOK! As Lefaris hands you your clothes you note something heavy folded into the bundle and are surprised to find what you recognise as an arcane focus. As you grasp it you feel the power of your pact flood through your body. In all this confusion it is some small comfort.
The stranger Nods as you motion toward the clothes Chonk, and as you get dressed he answers your question. You do not find anything in the bag, though it seems strangely bigger than it should be on the inside.
"I have many names, but you may call me Notch." his smile is friendly and sincere.
You all pick up the clothes, packs and items and begin to get dressed. (These have been added to you inventory) The clothes feel well made and comfortable. The packs are likewise well made and those of you with magical ability get an inkling that there is more to them than meets he eye. An Arcana check might tell you more...
Notch nods earnestly as you speak Guroz.
"Of course, answers... yes. That is to be expected. This is not a dream, well that is unless all of existence is a dream, which I admit is an interesting notion. It would in fact explain a great deal. Or perhaps an illusionary construct where we are but pawns in the..." he continues to babble on for several minutes, seemingly forgetting you are all there until suddenly he reaches up and pinches himself and yelps in pain.
"No that is settled. I passed the test, this is definitely not a dream. So as to what is going on." he pauses for a moment as if composing his thoughts.
"This world... My world, is in trouble. I have lost my champion. So, I called in a few favours from those you would call gods and have borrowed some of theirs, and by that I mean you. Four hero's from distant realms sent to save Overland from peril and find its lost champion, and here you all are!" he claps in delight looking very pleased with himself.
Lefaris, the pork chops are delicious. As with Sindri, you find an object wrapped in your clothing. It is a small wooden cube with intricate musical notes and patterns carved into every side. A strap has been fasted to it, to allow it to hung around your neck or shoulder. As you touch the object it emits a brief musical note. As you question the man further he seems eager to respond.
"I am glad you came because all was lost. My champion was lost. My people were loosing, all hope was lost, and well now there is hope. You all bring me hope." he looks suddenly worried, "Hmm can not stay much longer, I need to go..." then remembering himself again.
"Choice? Yes that was it. You did not have a choice? I did not know that. That is troubling indeed, a cause for resentment and confusion no doubt." he looks troubled for a moment but quickly recovers, "But you are here now and that is all that matters. I asked and you came and now there is hope."
Chonk munches on a chop while listening to Notch. He involuntarily chokes a little when he says, “Four hero's from distant realms…”
Maybe the other three were heroes where they were from, but Chonk knew himself. Whichever god passed him off to Notch as a hero must be having a healthy chuckle about now.
But those thoughts were replaced with a swelling in the chest when presented with the opportunity to bring hope to an entire world. Now that is a purpose! That is noble! That is something to devote one’s life to!
”You have my sword”, Chonk declares as he lifts the gifted sword in the air, “but tell us more about your champion, like where to find him. And since this is your world, anything we should watch out for.”
"Yes, before you go, a couple quick things." Lefaris says, holding up a hand. "First, there is no resentment, not on my part. I had no real place back where I was, so am content to be here now. Secondly, this world is rather, squarish... Is there anything we need to know about it, as it is nothing at all like my own worlds were. Please understand I, at least, feel there are some fundamental differences here that we may need to have explained if we are going to be true heros in this world." (She really has not spent much time with her gear yet so I am not going to do that arcana check yet, but will do so eventually.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Sindri sits in silence as she takes all this in. She grasps the arcane focus tightly, enjoying the small comfort it brings and not realizing until now how lost she was without it. These others, how can they be so calm about this? They have been ripped from their worlds, everything they know, their daily routines. Won't someone miss them? Won't they miss someone? Now that she thinks about it, no one will really.. no, don't think about that. She needs to find a way back. To her comfort zone, to her daily routines, to her..oh but what a cute chicken! Even if it is square.
She sets the sword down next to her and as she relishes in the fact she is dressed now, who would have thought clothes were ever a luxury? She notices something a little different in them, not the same as she is used to and does a quick check
Arcana: 18
As Notch talks about resentment, she pops her head up and almost glares at him. She realizes they need help and it isn't his fault, she just can't help herself. Well, they need help. She can do that, and as soon as they find this champion of theirs, she can go home. Back to her routine.
Chonk, as you lift your sword Notch grins triumphantly, then at the mention of his champion his face falls.
"His name is Steve. He came to this world much like all of you, and he became a great champion of the people.."
PWOK!
"Yes yes and the animals." he nods toward the chicken. "Steve is a master of the sword and bow, and alchemist and enchanter. A builder and explorer, and just an all round great guy. I do not know what has happened to him but he has disappeared. Without him monsters will terrorise the night, the undead with rise up once more and the Pillagers from beyond the Deep Ocean have returned to subdue the innocent villagers of Overworld. In short we are in a mess."
He considers your second question Chonk and when you echo his sentiments Lefaris he nods slowly as if choosing his words carefully.
"Yes I suppose it would seem very different to you... so much to tell you and so little time." Once again he becomes distracted and grumbles under his breath, "Yes, yes I am coming."
"So the basics... this world is made from matter much like your own but here that matter is formed into cubes. I have always like the shape. The simplicity of them. This alters the laws of physics somewhat but you will get used to that. What you must know is.." he begins to check points off on his fingers.
"One. You need to eat and you need to sleep... or life gets hard. Nothing new there I suppose but here the effect are more dramatic."
Second finger, "Two. Do not get caught outside during the night. That is when the undead rise and the monsters come out of their hiding places. Sunlight is their destroyer... mostly."
Third finger, and he flinches and looks behind him. "They are in the bowl next to the fridge, I'll be there in a moment." he definitely was not talking to you that time.... "Sorry about that, yes number three. If you see a Creeper you need to run."
Sindri as you listen to the odd stranger and his odd words you focus on the gifts you have been given and realise that while the clothes and swords are mundane enough the Handy Haversack is a rare magical item that would be quite valuable back home, and you have one each!?
As you take in this revelation, Notch is ending his speech; "...there is a small village several hours walk to the east of here. Please take what I have given you and seek shelter there before the night draws in." He glances back again and shakes his head. "Sorry I really do have to go. I feel terrible about it all but it can not be helped." he then yells at the top of his voice :
"Yes yes I am coming! Shit!" and vanishes into thin air.
”Creeper, huh. What do you suppose that is? Do you think we’ll know one when we see one?”
Chonk hoists the pack and adjusts the straps. It really doesn’t weigh much, which is good.
”Guroz, could you make use of dual wielding these wooden swords?” Chonk asks while offering his sword. “I’m pretty good with my fists, but I might ask for its return if I need to poke something and I don’t want touch it directly.”
Gurozfrowned as Notch rambled; there was much to take in.
As Chonkoffers him a temporary weapon, the half-orc gives a single nod to accept.
"Right, I don't about you, but I rather not face the undead, especially at night while we're still figuring this place out. Shall we get to this village? Get to safety before figuring out our next move?"Guroz speaks aloud, picking up his own pair of chops to eat as they take the suggestion to start moving.
"I still think we should kill the chicken." Lefaris says, glancing to the square beast. "It could give us some good food for when we run out of pork chops." She moves to her own bundle now, starting to slip clothes on, though her illusion is still in affect, so it appears she is simply slipping clothes on, the clothes then disappearing. Once done she would check out the strange musical device she finds with her gear, and marvel at the pack.
"Yes, if we don't wish to kill the chicken, or even if we do, I do think we should move on towards this village." She says once done with her investigation of the gear.

Lefaris at the mention of killing the chicken, the little creature gives an angry PWOK! and scampers behind Sindri's legs. It peeks out and glares at you menacingly. Your arcana check reveals the pack to be a Handy Haversack. A valuable and useful item. The Note Block is not magical in itself yet seems to give off some sort of inner red light as it plays its music. The notes it plays are dependent on the position and pressure placed on the item by your fingers. As you experiment with it you feel the familiar resonance of magic as your natural talents translate the music into arcane power. You are confident that with a little practice this little note block will do as well as any lyre or flute for your purposes.
