Driven from lands farther north by more powerful dragons, a young white dragon named Cryovain has descended upon the Sword Mountains, claiming the snow-capped range as its domain. Typical of its kind, Cryovain is dim-witted and cruel. The dragon patrols the skies around Icespire Peak, surveying its territory while hunting for food and easy treasure. With each passing day, the dragon’s domain grows as it ranges farther across the land, preying on anything it can catch with its claws or freeze to death with its icy breath. Sightings of the dragon are becoming more common, as are its attacks.
A crumbling fortress on the northeast spur of Icespire Peak serves as the dragon’s lair. Cryovain seized the icy fortress from a tribe of savage orcs, killing the orc war chief and forcing the tribe’s survivors to flee into the foothills and forests. Enraged by the death of their war chief, the orcs have called upon ancient allies — evil, shapechanging, half-orc spellcasters who bless and advise them. These half-orcs worship Talos, an evil god of storms, and many dwell in the dark depths of Neverwinter Wood. In stormy weather, they gather on remote hilltops to summon Gorthok the Thunder Boar, a primal entity that serves Talos. Like the god it serves, Gorthok delights in destruction.
The orcs aren’t the only creatures thrown into upheaval by Cryovain’s sudden arrival. A manticore driven from its mountaintop nest by the roaming white dragon has migrated to the foothills and begun terrorizing folk living on the outskirts of the mining town of Phandalin. Other monsters in the region have been similarly displaced.
About Me: Hello, I have been playing 5e for a year now both in-person and PBP but I've never been a DM before. I'm really interested in it though so I figured why not try to run one of the introductory modules? Since I am a new DM though, I ask for anyone who applies to be patient as I am still learning the ropes. That said I don't mind picking players who are also new to the game. This module is meant to be a really good introduction to D&D. :)

Name: Rel Serafin (link goes to dndbeyond character sheet) Race: Drow Half-Elf Class: Sorcerer Subclass: Divine Soul Alignment, Appearance, Personality, Backstory - see (first) spoiler tag below:
Alignment: Chaotic Good Appearance: Taller than average, young dark-skinned half-elf female with silver hair and gray eyes, Personality: Fiercely independent. Chip on her shoulder. See backstory - grew up in the Underdark so still relatively unfamiliar with the surface world. Backstory (including reason for being in Phandalin - sorry for length, it's a character I've worked on for a while but never played in a campaign):
Rel's mother was Ilvara, an exceedingly cruel and capricious drow noble from the Mizzrym family in Menzoberranzan in the Underdark. A family of slavers. Her father Tam, was a captured slave, an aasimar, who she was barely allowed to know and died when Rel was still a small child. In fact, Rel was only born due to a bet, Ilvara carrying the pregancy to term to collect her winnings, before discarding her daughter like trash. Rel's full name itself was intended as a joke. She was named after some scullery maid with dreams above her station in a silly fantasy tale from another plane that Ilvara once read. A long, flowery name that Rel loathes with a passion and has always refused and shortened. To this day, the worst insult you can do to her is to call her by her full name, "Cinderella". In truth, Rel was raised more or less as a slave herself, other than some grudging education and some occasional favors bestowed on her at the whim of her mother and the Mizzrym family. Nevertheless, she was bright and charismatic and soaked up what little she was offered, while harboring an immense chip on her shoulder.
During an incursion by demons from the Abyss into the Underdark, Rel managed to escape, along with a slave she had secretly befriended. A quirky young rock gnome woman named Roywyn Inkbow. After months of harrowing adventures, Rel and Roywyn were able to escape to the surface. During this journey, Rel took what she believed to be her father Tam's last name, Serafin, as she felt the spark of divine magic blossoming within her, from some angelic being far more heavenly than Rel could ever hope to be. A distant ancestor of Tam's. In conflict with this was the power emanating from a pair of strange black earrings she found in a deep tunnel excavated by a purple worm not far from Menzoberranzan. In some way that Rel does not fully understand, the earrings have bonded Rel in a mostly unwitting pact with the Raven Queen of Shadowfell, but Rel is as yet unaware. (Future multi-class to Hexblade Patron Warlock).
Facing an utterly strange realm above ground, Rel joined Roywyn as she returned to her gnome clan in the Sword Mountains. In time, she became fluent in Gnomish after months of patient sessions at Roywyn's side, managing herself to teach Roywyn passable Elvish in the process. She settled at the edges of the clan's holdings and became after a time, if not loved, at least well-liked and accepted by the otherwise insular gnomes in a way that she never had been by the drow.
But trouble was brewing. The gnomes came under attack by fierce orcs from another part of the mountains. Why, Rel could not say, other than the marauders' evident aggression and bloodlust. The gnomes were routed and Rel fled, separated from her friend, eventually finding herself in the foothill village of Phandalin. She has no money, no friends and few options, finding the ways of the rustic folk of Phandalin quaint and strange. She wishes she knew what happened to Roywyn and the rest of her gnome clan. Perhaps one day she would find out. And seek to set right whatever had caused this upheaval.

Name: Lorgar
Race: Gem Dragonborn (Crystal)
Class: Artificer
Alignment: NG
Appearance: Slender, tall, very lean not overly burly like his chromatic or metal kin.
Personality: Naive and Friendly
Backstory: Growing up around dwarves, Lorgar learned, his craft in jewelry and smithing. He made a friend while studying his crafted; they went into business together but his friend grew ill. Lorgar tried his best but he wasn’t much for confrontation. Their business failed but Lorgar saved enough to at least buy up most of the debt. Trying to start a new he’s traveled into the town of Phandain to sale and make wares to help support his friend’s family and maybe start a new business with some friends.
Appearance: A six foot tall Black tiefling male with Golden eyes, long black hair, dressed in a comfortable pair of black slacks, and an earthen vest over an emerald dress shirt all of which have become somewhat worn over his travels.
Personality: A personable individual with a bit of a self deprecating side who is currently a bit dejected following a recent failure.
Backstory: Arlo the first born son and scion of the prominent merchant house of Castemont, trained from a young age by his father and tutors to excel at the lifestyle he was expected to live and to gain the business acumen he would need to thrive. With his tutelage, natural charisma, comely demeanor, his fathers financial backing and connections behind him he was expected to become a great success… by those who had only known him by reputation if you were to ask his teachers, mother or the boy himself you would know that expectations were far lower due to his inability to retain pertinent information and his somewhat dim nature. The only one who seemed to have faith in his ability to succeed despite his oblivious short comings was his father he had hoped that he would rise to the occasion if thrust into the thick of things so confident was he in that sentiment he had arranged for Arlo a membership in the merchants guild and bankrolled his son in a new business venture he himself was planning to lead to his chagrin Arlo did bot meet his expectations and the venture failed in less then 2 years. Arlo fresh from the humiliation he had caused his family began preparations to return home and own up to his failings but before doing so on a whim he had decided to donate a majority of what was left of his personal funds to a decrepit church feeling as though the action would ensure that his failed endeavor would at least produce one positive outcome though he had no way of knowing that his generosity in that moment would garner the good will of more then just the clergymen he gifted the gold too as he began his trek back to waterdeep stopping from settlement to settlement whenever possible to avoid camping out.
Name: Izzaryn Arken Race: Dark Elf/Drow Class: Warlock (The Great Old One) Alignment: Neutral Appearance: Dusky gray skin, shorter white hair, and yellowish-gold eyes that shift to a pale maroon in the darkness. Personality: Curious with a youthful exuberance founded from a new sense of freedom, mixed with a caution that is ever bred into the societies from the underdark. Backstory: With a life of guaranteed servitude, Izzaryn's placement and survival was determined by his skill and usefulness. Fortunately for Izzaryn, he discovered a key to unlock what he lacked in strength, knowledge, stature, and talent. While his patron offered glimpses of the arcane that threatened madness, it was a risk and a pact Izzaryn was more than willing to take. A brutal life under the tutelage and apprenticeship of those whose abilities he could never quite grasp was a life not worth having, to say nothing of the more fanatic members of his race.
Fleeing the burdens of the underdark and his race, Izzaryn ventured into the world above in service of new masters. Both of these, his patron and own curiosity, have guided him towards the frozen ranges in the north. While the purpose and interests of his patron remain ever elusive, Izzaryn's own desire for the safety of obscurity and thrill of adventure are well aligned to the desolate and cold regions of the mountains.
(what's this? A twist! Heh, I wanted to put out a sorcerer aberration mind version of Izz as well. Pretty much the same, with the only history adjustment being that he was captured by illithids and escaped, which gave him his origin abilities and new lease on life. More than happy to play whichever theme fits)
Appearance: 6" 0", Light brown hair, light blue eyes, male, greenish hued cloak over scale male in subdued colors, with a longbow and longsword.
Personality: I’m driven by a wanderlust that led me away from home. I once ran twenty-five miles without stopping to warn to my clan of an approaching orc horde. I’d do it again if I had to. It is each person’s responsibility to make the most happiness for the whole tribe. If I dishonor myself, I dishonor my whole clan. My family, clan, or tribe is the most important thing in my life, even when they are far from me. I will bring terrible wrath down on the evildoers (Orcs) who destroyed my homeland.
Backstory: Raised by the Wood Elves, learned at an early age to track, to use the bow, and to be a hunter. Served in the town guard, fought against an orc incursion that saw his village destroyed, his parents killed. At that moment, became an outlander, ranging far and wide in the High Forest, keeping an eye out for anything sinister to be hunted.
Class: Fighter at the start, will evolve as Fighter/Wizard
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Appearance: A solar beauty: tall, well proportioned, with tanned skin and blond wavy hair. Her deep blue eyes used to shine with intelligence and curiosity, but now there is a shadow of sadness in them.
Personality: Used to say: "I'm Khessa, I'm free as the blowing wind" - and she means it! Fascinated by mistery or arcane (partly because she got to experiment first-hand the advantage that drow spellcasters gave to the drow raiding party, partly because she has always been curious). She thinks: "I'll show the drows the same mercy they have shown me" (she will NOT kill peaceful drow on sight, of course, but she will be quite wary of every drow... and will show no mercy to an UNPEACEFUL drow - or to a slaver). Fear of total darkness (because of her ordeal in the Underdark). She will do whatever it takes to free her kidnapped family from the drow (she will not go back to underdark alone to get uselessly killed... because if she gets killed, her family will be doomed to life-long slavery. But she will always keep her goal in mind - trying to get information, win allies, or improve herself until she will be able to go)
Backstory: Khessa was born to a peasant family, in a small village. At the age of 20 she is kidnapped, with her family, during a raid of drow slavers. With some luck she manages to free herself, along with some other slave from her village. After a a dangerous journey in the underground, during which she is forced on several occasions to defend herself in the hostile and unfamiliar environment (risking her life, but also honing her fighting skills), she manages to lead the slaves back to the surface. With her family still lost in drow hands, she becomes an adventurer, an hero of the people in particular; she will, when possible, help the defenseless (waiting to be able to help, some day, her family) and will satisfy the curiosity of the world that she had always had... She starts her proper adventuring career with a journey to Phandalin, worried by what the common folk might be suffering because of all this monsters in upheaval she heared of.
Personality: Standoffish till trust is earned Will do what he see is needed to get a job done.
Backstory: Born in Neverwinter Russel as a young child wondered off from his home chasing a rat into the woods. He was soon lost with many trails and dangers he was fortunate to be found by a family of sprites who lost their own child recently. The Faye's normally aloof attitude was overridden by maternal instincts and raised him as their own. Things were going happily till he was adventuring not far from his new family and was lured to a house made from a hollow tree by a young woman who look much like his mother. But the woman was actually a hag able to detect the young child's memories. And she loved to play evil games with unwary passerby's Enamored with his red hair and light blue eyes Instead of eating him the hag experimented on Russel polymorphing him into different forms experimenting with different hexes while torturing other children she caught from a nearby city by luring them from alleyways with candy and toys into her domain. Finally consuming their souls and making meat pies she would sell for coin intown. The Fae worried about their adopted son searched for him for a year till they happened upon the evilly protected tree recognizing from afar their adopted son and realizing they needed help partitioned adventures and the authorities intown and soon there was an epic battle. The hag and her coven slain their son rescued but sent to an orphanage in the city. For the sprites in their efforts were slain also. Russel Varangian its a name he remembers from the short years he was fully human. Though he looks the part of his true parents. He sometimes feels the urge of the hunt something wolfish within. While at the orphanage he learned to fend for himself stealing what was needed. He soon found a rapier amongst other tools off a dead rogue in an alley way. He learned the nuances of armor weapons and shields from an old veteran existing in the gutters too old and drunk to earn a living Russel would steal booze and food for the lessons the veteran taught, till he found the man dead of the mans own neglect. Taking the mans shield helm and armor Varangian now in his late teens, decided to try and put the Vets lessons to use
Hired as a caravan guard Russel's employment ended in Phandelin. He waits for employment at the Stonehill Inn
Appearance: Slender, brown Hair, Gray eyes, Rather average looking, has seen his share of fights and has the scars to prove it.
Personality: I am always calm, no matter what the situation. I never raise my voice or let mu emotions control me. I don't pay attention to the risks in the situation. Never tell me the odds.
Backstory: Being a bounty hunter is tricky business. You need some extra skills or connections to get you to the people or things you have been hired to acquire. Fortunately, I am as good with my charm as I am with my blade. Turns out, people don't actually pay as much attention to a musician as the musician can of them. That being said, things can still escape one's attention.
That's what happened on this last job. I was supposed to save this rich guys daughter who had fallen in with a bad bunch of wealthy thugs. Rich bad-boys. If I could get her back as well as this box of jewels they had stolen, I was going to get a good pay day. Enough maybe to finally pay off an old debt. Everything went well, I had gotten the girl and the box and arranged to meet the father in Phandalin, the closest town to where I found the girl. He shows up, They embrace. I get the box out. She has forgotten something of hers in the chest behind me. As I am walking toward the father suddenly everything goes black. I woke up with a splitting headache. The girl, the box and everyone else is gone. I am guessing she wasn't really his daughter.
So, here I am in Phandalin, using what skills I have to get me enough coin to get by or until the next job comes along.
Appearance: Short humanoid male with brown hair and eyes and pale skin
Personality: Jolly and fun-loving, but a bit of a scaredy cat
Backstory: His village is being terrorized by a monster. He tried to keep people's spirits up by giving silly, mocking performances about the beast, but when it heard about his shenanigans, Brayden fled in terror.
Appearance: Golden Tan Skin, Brown Hair, 5’7 tall, light armor and shield with blue and silver clothes, hooded cloak, moonstone amulet hanging from a leather belt strap, a piece of wood tucked in belt barely visible under cloak, mace, silver tipped spear, a six spot vials belt, an herbalist kit and standard pack.
Personality: Has a hard time dealing with people in general, but will come to the aid all in need. Will stay very much in control but if the opportunity to kill an undead arises, he will run into the fray.
Backstory: After being separated from his tribe, he made his way east and found himself in Waterdeep. He spent a year or so at the Temple of the Moon. He began to feel stifled serving the temple. He was not allowed to take the vows to Selune. He, as well as his 7 sisters, was trained by his mother and father to be healers above all else. His mother was a priestess of the Temple many years before when she met his father. The Temple wouldn’t allow the relationship so they left with others that felt the temple was too heavy handed with the laws. One night in prayer, he had a vision that his sisters were chained in darkness and moonlight was shining down on them protecting them from a hoard of undead. He looked up to the night sky and seen a woman in silver dress radiantly shining. She looks to Jasper and smiles. Jasper leaves the temple immediately to find his sisters. After months of travel, he finds himself in Phandalin at the Shrine of Luck helping wayward travelers tend to ailments and injuries. He’s been very busy of late with the increasing presence of orcs along the Triboar trail. Downtime is spent working on herbalist recipes and searching for local plant life that can aid in creation of new healing cures and potions. He is in the process of finishing a healing potion recipe his father taught him in hopes to trade for some better armor at the Lionshield Coster.
Appearance: Typical in height for halflings, Falver has russet brown hair and ice-blue eyes. He wears simple browns, greens, and blues. His belt pack holds his cartographers tools, along with a notebook that contains his maps, notes and sketches he makes during his travels.
Personality: Inquisitive and reserved. Falver has a love of history and seems to be searching for something... a drive that leads him forward on his journeys.
Backstory: Years ago, a thief stole a special map his father had copied from the cartographer's guild near their village, and now Falver searches for it or the thief. Falver came to Phandalin after being held by an ancient evil located East of the Sword Mountains for 2 years.
Dragon of Icespire Peak

Race: Dark Elf/Drow
Class: Warlock (The Great Old One)
Alignment: Neutral
Appearance: Dusky gray skin, shorter white hair, and yellowish-gold eyes that shift to a pale maroon in the darkness.
Withdrawn. Have fun.

Name: Eirfyr
Race: Half Wood Elf
Class: Ranger
Alignment: CG

Name: Khessa Cabbagefield
Race: Human
Hired as a caravan guard Russel's employment ended in Phandelin. He waits for employment at the Stonehill Inn

Name: Quint
Race: Human
Class: Bard
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral

Name: Jasper Mooncrest https://ddb.ac/characters/59264043/Pd3iwc
Race: Wood Elf
Class: Cleric Twilight Domain
Alignment: Chaotic Good
Appearance: Golden Tan Skin, Brown Hair, 5’7 tall, light armor and shield with blue and silver clothes, hooded cloak, moonstone amulet hanging from a leather belt strap, a piece of wood tucked in belt barely visible under cloak, mace, silver tipped spear, a six spot vials belt, an herbalist kit and standard pack.
