I am checking to see if there is any interest in getting a Horde of the Dragon Queen game started. There are a *lot* going so I won't be surprised if interest is tepid. So allow me to try and sell my idea.
This won't exactly be a 'by-the-book' HotDQ adventure. It will still look an awful lot like HotDQ, but I have jettisoned some material from the book I did not like, and added in some original material and material borrowed from other sources.
There is the opportunity to explore a vibrant and colorful part of the Forgotten Realms, and create heroes who will face off with - and hopefully defeat - some very nasty villains.
Whenever possible I will post battle maps to make combat easier to follow.
If the story reaches its end, there may be the possibility for further adventures. But be advised, *spoiler* this version of the story is very unlikely to flow into the 'Rise of Tiamat' module. *spoiler*. If your dream is to make a character who will one day face off against the queen of dragons - a great dream! - this isn't the story for them.
But if you are interested in playing a fun module with some DM homebrewed modifications, or if you have played HotDQ before and are interested in revisiting the story with some (hopefully) exciting and unexpected twists, then we might be able to work together.
This story has room to develop into something very combat-heavy, something more intrigue-oriented, or a mix.
I would like players who are interested in engaging in roleplay and not just rolling for damage.
I also tend to run these a little darker than they would be out of the box. Nothing too awful, but villains are villains, so if some kobolds stabbing civilians, or a half-dragon kicking a friendly dog that didn't do anything but be a good boy is too heavy for you, consider this your warning.
If you're interested, here is how to apply:

Backstory: Up to you with the following hook... As the story begins, your PC is either arriving at Greenest with a caravan (as a traveler? a guard? a merchant? a prisoner?), or lives on a small farm or homestead just outside town. Greenest is a modest farming town located in the Greenfields region between Beregost and Iriabor. Eventually he found a home though, in Baldur's Gate, working for a Mercenary Guild based out of that city. Backstory: The Wizard Hayworth faced a great foe, a Beholder, Xanzee, over something of considerable power. The contested item was a long-lost tome of Ancient Myth Dannor. The battle had come to a lull but Hayworth needed information. So, like many wizards he summoned his favorite Familiar, a cat he named Cheddar. Cheddar had been born many years ago, when Hayworth was an apprentice and over years and years of summoning, seemed to become more and more like a living breathing feline rather than a magical construct. Cheddar purred and nuzzled Hayworth's leg as Hayworth gave his familiar commands. Once received, Cheddar launched into action, reaching his master's goal and telepathically reporting back. However, there was no answer. Cheddar could feel something was wrong. Frantically the familiar raced to its master's side to only find Hayworth close to the end of his life and the Beholder hovering over the human wizard, laughing. Cheddar placed himself between the Beholder and his master, puffed up the best he could, and hissed. A ray of energy flew at the magical construct only to be met with the last spell of a dying wizard. There was a massive explosion and the world went dark. Cheddar found his way to the surface somehow, pulling a bag of his master's things behind him. He knew this was his master's spell book and knew, somehow, how to work some of the magic within. Cheddar found he could stand and walk erect, like his master, and had been imparted with some of his master's knowledge. Unsure of what had happened, Cheddar has embarked upon a career as a wizard, hoping to find answers.
Backstory: Tella was born to a priestess of Selûne, her father unknown and long gone before she was born. Her childhood at a small temple dedicated to the Moonmaiden was a simple one. Often she was busy with chores or her studies. There were few children her age- most stopping to rest at the temple with their parents before continuing their journey- but there was one girl a few years older than her named Emilia. The two were inseparable, and acted more like siblings. When they were teens, Emilia managed to manifest clerical abilities. Most at the church were happy, and the young priestess quickly put her abilities to good use. The two often began spending less time together, having different tasks to do. Tella began adding on a prayer every evening, wishing to be granted magical abilities from her goddess as well. They continued to go unanswered. While she never hated Emilia or their duties, she began feeling resentment towards her. She hated the feeling of being in her shadow. One evening, she snuck out of the temple to stargaze. A shooting star passed by overhead, landing somewhere nearby in the woods. She decided to go find where it landed out of curiosity. Most of the evening after that she could not remember, other than a strange fire. When she woke up, she was back in the spot where she had been stargazing, wearing a ring with a star shaped indent in it. It wasn't long after that she noticed her ability to cast spells. She was overjoyed by her dream coming true, but soon a more literal dream began appearing to her. Dreams of roads, warmth, of finding something, but the dream always cut off before she could tell what. Deciding it was a sign, from her goddess or whatever had given her powers, she decided to take to the road. Recently, she has found herself heading towards Greenest, joining a caravan that saw her upbringing in a temple of Selûne as a blessing.
Tylaerys was born into the prominent Silvertor family of Waterdeep, but as an obvious misstep of her mother with a dashing elven adventurer whose name still is not known by Tylaerys, she never really was accepted by her family. Instead she turned to explore the City of Wonders, frequenting its taverns and learning to blend in and enjoying herself through the nights. After another night of carefree carousing, returning from the Yawning Portal to the more affluent parts of the city where her family's mansion was situated she came upon another woman being attacked by a group of Zhentarim thugs. Tylaerys reacted instinctively, unleashing a wave of thunderous force booming in the alleyway and scaring off the cowardly thugs. The woman turned out to be an agent of the Harpers called Evelyn Starbreeze who quickly became a mentor for Tylaerys, teaching her about her draconic heritage that had manifested, and about the ways of the Harpers, eventually inviting Tylaerys to join their ranks and thus giving her a new purpose. Recently Tylaerys left Waterdeep and her family, taking the name of Silverscale in honor of her heritage, and is now traveling south along the Sword coast, finally reaching the town of Greenest on a secret mission for the Harpers.
Backstory: Yasmin grew up on the outskirts of Greenrest with her father, a rather gruff dwarf known as Moody Felder. She did her level best to continue his woodcutting and carpentry business after he got too old to do so himself.....but she never really had a head for figures and though she enjoyed her time out in the woods she would honestly be just admiring trees rather than felling them. And when there was an offer to take over the business from one of the halfling families she took it despite her fathers objections. She has recently been earning coin by signing on as a caravan guard between Greenrest and Nashkel and has only recently returned from her last trip. Her father passed while she was gone and she is at a loose end as to what to do with her life....
Backstory: Sear grew up in a small ton as the son of the tavernkeeper. All he knew about his father was that he was a efreeti from the Plane Of Fire. As he grew up, he learned martial skills and joined the town watch. One day, when he was 16, a young red dragon raided and burned the town. Sear attempted to fight off the dragon and his mother managed to escape and he ran into the forest. After several weeks of traveling and living of a sack of pickles he arrived at Greenest.

Finn Ol’Gren dropped her Mask as she ran through the woods outside the school heading... Anywhere else. Two years there studying and learning and following all those rules was too much and it was time for a new adventure!
She’d been enlisted in the magical school of boredom and misery over her colorful and profuse protestations. She didn’t belong there, didn’t want to go there, and would never last there she insisted time and time again. Her mother ignored it all.Truth be told she was at her wits end and had no idea of what else to do with the child. The girl was...Her life, her love, her everything, but nothing but chaos and trouble and totally uncontrollable!
“You need to learn control,” her mother said for the umpteenth time.“Restraint.And there you will be around those who understand... people who won’t be afraid and suspicious each time you drop one Mask and put on another.”
At the same old complaints Finn’s Mask adopted aspects of an Orc fur trader who’d made their way through the village a year ago and Finn literally growled. Her mother’s face remained stern but it did soften around the edges...
“That’s it exactly, my Finn...You change and adapt too easily, you relish in it.It is a joy to see but not for the Solos.Specially not in a place so small as here. They don’t trust it, are scared by it.We have to hide it from them or who knows what’ll...”
“I’m tired of hiding!” Finn insisted, dropping the vestiges of the Orc Mask and reverting to her standard Finn Persona. “I want to be me!I want to more than just this one face...”
“And thus the school,” her mother replied patiently.“You can be you there and anything else you wish...”
---
And thus the school.
It was actually ok.For a while.Plenty to experience, to learn from, to adapt to, to take advantage of...So many varied Solos to craft new masks from.So many unsuspecting dupes to scam and trick and mislead. The education was alright, she supposed. And she made some friends... And a few foes, perhaps. She had learned new tricks, new Masks, even crafted a new Persona or three. But two years was an age and a half for one so used to change... And the school had more or less caught on to her tricks and it was getting tougher and tougher to get away with her shenanigans.Time for something new!
FYI - I tend to play my Bards as more talkers and writers than musical and singing, but she'll have an instrument on hand in case the need ever arises... But I tend to look first to them being swift talking scam artists and con men types. Card Players, Flip Flam men, Snake Oil Salesmen... Finn could easily be the Face of the party or the anti-Face who is likelier to cause problems than solve them. Or both.

Jararaka made a living by robbing travellers on the road and selling said wares to blackmarkets. In an act of superstition, she placed some of her rations atop an altar in exchange for safety under the temple's roof.
--- And a long-forgotten deity scrambles to grant divine blessing to their first worshipper in centuries.
(She would be found later and taken in as a prisoner, probably put to work with the party. Maybe the forgotten deity can have some connection to the story to give her motivation to continue the journey?)

Backstory:
Vinca, formerly known as Five, is merely fourteen. Unlike most fourteen years old girls, however, Vinca did not spend her years playing outside, helping her mother do chores, dressing dolls or anything of the like. Instead, Vinca - and six more children of varying ages - were kept in a secret facility, trained to become the perfect spies, and assassins.
Although one would expect assassins would be trained in martial arts, the seven were merely trained in a bit of self-defence, and that's about it. The assassin most people picture would be using daggers, knives, bows... and that's why such an assassin is not a perfect assassin. A true perfect assassin doesn't leave a body with a big bleeding hold in it, nor poison that could be later identified and tracked to its source. A perfect assassin was never seen, and nobody would assume they were there. The person is dead, the reason unknown. Similarly, a perfect spy doesn't interrogate people to find knowledge, for it risks their discovery or at least the knowledge that they might be around. Rather, a perfect spy reads their target's mind and steals their knowledge without them even realising it.
As such, these seven children were trained in the psionic arts, allowing them to read minds, speak with others telepathically... and one day maybe even form weapons that can kill a person without leaving any signs whatsoever. These powers, however, required strength of mind not normally found in children, or even in most adults. Thus, from an age too young, they were forced to study, and undergo tests and other practices to strengthen their mental abilities. Naturally, some were better at certain fields than others, Vinca was no exception.
The fifth in age, thus called Five. They needed no names, for they were tools, no Humans. Five excelled at telepathy and communications. She was the youngest of all to start communicating telepathically and began to forcefully read minds at a young age too. She was a gentle child, innocent and trusting, however, and the adults - their trainers - had to find special means to make sure she doesn't learn something she shouldn't know too soon. It even came to mind-shielding magics. As far as physical manifestations of her psionic abilities, however, Five was among the slowest to learn of all seven. Telekinesis - which is useful to steal important documents and the like - she had no talent to, and never managed to make anything budge. And in shaping psionic weapons she wasn't the best either. When the others were already able to form complex shapes - Two even managed to form a weapon already - Five bearly managed to form anything at all, shape or not. As soon as the strings of thought began to materialise, they'd dissipate.
One day, Five tried to read their teacher's mind. Their words did not help her understand what she was doing wrong, so maybe if she learns it directly from their knowledge, she'd be able to do it too... Catching the teacher off guard, he did not block her off nor even realised Five was reading his thoughts, and she learned... the things they did not wish she knew. Without getting into details, it scared her, and Five has decided she cannot stay.
It is about then that they learned about names. Sure, they might not have needed a name thus far, but if they are ever sent on a mission, they can't infiltrate a place with a strange name like "Five" that would attract attention. They'd need a name, just for practical uses. Plant-based names were suggested, for some reason. Five has never excelled in botany, so she went to the facility's library to find a book. It was not a strange thing to find in a place that trains children's minds by teaching them as much as possible. In a book about flowers, she found a white (sometimes) flower called Vinca. It had five petal leaves. She liked that and chose it for herself.
The night of her great escape. That is the problem when teaching children how to infiltrate into or escape out of places. It is hard to keep them. She did not do it overnight. As smart as she was made, Vinca would not mess it up. The details aren't as important, but surprisingly, the innocent obedient girl suddenly disappeared. Not only from the facility but the entire city in which it was located. Even the adults couldn't track her when she was this far away. As for her, it was not too difficult to sneak into a caravan before it left for some other city called Greenest. Not that Vinca knew that, but anywhere else was good. All she had to hope for is that nobody would find her during the ride and report about her. She did not want to go back.
Backstory: Fergus comes from the family that owned a local blacksmith shop in Greenest, learning the craft as soon as he was able to hold a hammer and tongs. As he grew older he began to study magic in order to learn the trade of a wizard but found it to be much to boring with all the books learning invovled. Instead he made his own slap together version and created his first work of artifice, a small box that made sounds. With this done he began to try and make many more devices, most either harmless or non functioning. That was until one day when he bought blue prints from a curious Gnome merchant.
The blueprints showed how to make some sort of golem like construct that Fergus thought would serve as a great defender for Greenest so he went to work to build it. Unable to get most of the true materials needed, the wannabe artificer substituted with what he could acquire from scrap materials from the family smithy. After a few years of work his slap dash creation was built and ready to begin its service as a guardian or so Fegus hoped.
With little fanfare or care from the rest of Greenest, the construct was activated. Unfortunately it did not work to defend the town as when infused with magic it went berserk and attacked Fergus and anyone in sight. This rampage lasted for several hours until it was finally put down the guards and a local wizard. Disgraced and thought mad, he was driven from the village and ended up taking residence in a small ramshackle hunting cabin. Desperate to prove that he could make the construct right with another chance, Fergus turned the cabin into a disorganized mess of a Lan and had been there ever since. He occasionally snuck into town to get things for his work.
Bartjeebus is a crazy good DM so it wouldn't matter what the adventure was, I'd try to be in. This is a bonus that I really know nothing about Horde of the Dragon queen. Thanks for considering the following:
Name: Silenus Underwood
Race: Satyr
Class: Barbarian (unless something in game steers him in another direction, he'll go Path of Wild Magic)
Stats: Point Buy
Background: Outlander (he just can't stay in one place long)
Backstory:
Even as far as satyr's go, Silenus has a burning need to see everything there is to see in this world. He's not exactly sure if he was born in the Feywild or Faerun, but he does know he did spend his earliest years in Cloakwood, just south of Baldur's Gate, crossing back and forth through the portals between the two realms as easily as crossing a brook. But the novelty of that soon paled and Silenus set out to explore the rest of Faerun. He's worked his way up and down the Sword Coast, seeking new experiences everywhere he's been. Unfortunately not having 'boundaries' in the conventional sense has led to Silenus being chased out of almost every town he's spent time in. When that happens, you tend to learn to take care of yourself, and Silenus has learned how to fight when the time comes and he's learned that his emotions run so close to the surface that sometimes he can just let them go and who knows what will happen.
He's worked as a shopkeeper's assistant until he accidentally burned the shop down when he wondered how combustible books really were. He's worked in inns and taverns until angry, jealous husbands and sometimes wives coming looking for him. He worked as a guard to a wizard's tower but had to leave quickly when he couldn't resist the temptation to taste one of the scrolls. He's even worked in the sewers of Waterdeep just because he wanted to know what was down there (turns out a lot of weird, freaky stuff - if it didn't smell so bad he'd still be there).
And now he finds himself chained, sitting in the back of a caravan wagon on its way to Greenest. You really shouldn't tell a caravan guard to guard a chest with his life if you're not going to tell him what's inside of it. He's long since worked the clasp on the manacles loose but he really doesn't feel like walking at the moment and is enjoying the gentle sway of the wagon and the sound of the birds overhead. Besides, he can see his gear and weapons nearby. The merchant leader of the caravan keeps threatening to put him back to work. But Silenus keeps tuning out the conversation as he watches a butterfly fly by. Do dragons fly like that?
(On a side note - while Silenus is wildly impulsive, a hard drinker, gambler, flirt, and incredibly curious about everything, he'll be reined in enough so as not to cause the party too many headaches in every encounter)
It looks like we have enough interest. I'm getting ready for birthday party so I don't have time right now to sit down and think about applications. Don't take non-response as rejection just yet.
I'll try to pick a team and contact everyone by tomorrow.

Backstory: Mother was subject to terrible arcane experimentation which led to her pregnancy as a result of a variation of a clone/reincarnation ritual. She escaped to a very remote wilderness location where she raised me till I was 5, she disappeared. I was on my own a year at which point a hermit happened by and taught me my ranger skills. A few years later I learned I had an odd bond with felines. Not long after I hired out as a guard/scout, I’m never looking back.
Background: Celebrity Adventurer’s Scion (His Gith tribe is one of the most dangerous tribes known to exist and thei warriors are very powerful and merciless)
Backstory: Inutilis was a Githyanki serving under his powerful tribe as one of the many spellcasters in his army. One day however, his platoon members betrayed and tricked him into scouting ahead of a dark chasm where a mind flayer waited and attacked him on the spot. However, the mind flayer was destroyed after a lot of spell casting. Having survived the mind flayer's assault, Inutilis retreated where he accidentally stumbled into a portal that teleported him to the town of Greenest. Unsure of where he is right now, Inutilis is attempting to find some way to head back to his homeland, even if it means heading through that dangerous chasm again.
I have had something unexpected come up that will delay the start of this game. Perhaps a week. I am going to close the applications, but once things settle down, I will reach back out to some of the applicants about getting started.
Thank you all for the interest and I hope to be in touch with some of you soon.

“That’s it exactly, my Finn... You change and adapt too easily, you relish in it. It is a joy to see but not for the Solos. Specially not in a place so small as here. They don’t trust it, are scared by it. We have to hide it from them or who knows what’ll...”
“I’m tired of hiding!” Finn insisted, dropping the vestiges of the Orc Mask and reverting to her standard Finn Persona. “I want to be me! I want to more than just this one face...”
“And thus the school,” her mother replied patiently. “You can be you there and anything else you wish...”
---
And thus the school.
It was actually ok. For a while. Plenty to experience, to learn from, to adapt to, to take advantage of... So many varied Solos to craft new masks from. So many unsuspecting dupes to scam and trick and mislead. The education was alright, she supposed. And she made some friends... And a few foes, perhaps. She had learned new tricks, new Masks, even crafted a new Persona or three. But two years was an age and a half for one so used to change... And the school had more or less caught on to her tricks and it was getting tougher and tougher to get away with her shenanigans. Time for something new!

Jararaka made a living by robbing travellers on the road and selling said wares to blackmarkets. In an encounter with a seemingly ordinary yet well-guarded caravan, Jararaka was injured and separated from her partners-in-crime. She ran and found her way into the ruins of an old temple.
Thanks for the opportunity!
Varielky | Emma
Name: Fergus the Mad
Race: Variant Human
Class: Artificer (Battlesmith or Armorer)
Stats: Point Buy
