With watches planned and some at least confident in the results of initial investigations, the majority of the group find their way into the tent provided to rest, leaving Piers to handle first watch. Given the crampness of the tent, Gruk also opts to rest just outside, grumbling in common on how it probably would've been easier just to set the whole field on fire and be done with things.
To Piers: Even before the sun has fully set over horizon, there's little deny that winter was fast approaching the city of Waterdeep by the sounds and fill of chill breeze sweeping throught he air. Thankfully, the very stalks around the group are serving a decent break against the wind, and you have plenty enough layers on at the moment to endure. In fact, the rustling of the greenery and quiet din of the world beyond the walls becomes in time a welcome relief over the ambient chaotic noise of the city. Still, you do not let the comfort and pleasantness of it all distract you from your duty. But rather in letting your being synchronize with the natural rhythms of your surroundings, you eventually end your watch self-assured that nothing untoward happened during it.
To Druxacmil: Not one to sleep deeply on the job, especially given the chances of being rent asunder by "farming props" of all things, a gentle shake from Piers alerts you of it being your turn to stand watch. By that point, a full moon had rose fairly high in the sky, gently bathing your general surroundings in just enough radiance as to see with some clarity your immediate surroundings. You still find yourself debating the pros and cons of erecting a small campfire. The cross section where the party currently rested at was plenty wide enough for it. Plus you would be able to better see your surroundings. But ultimately, nothing much comes of following through on the idea before midnight heralds another rotation in watches. Your own having been mercifully uneventful.
To Cathern: Yours is a restless sleep as a nightmare plagued much of your dreams. Although you would later not be able to recall much of it by the time you awoke, you would at least vaguely remembering having heard a little girl's voice whispering some sort of warning to you. Nevertheless, with Drux awakening you for your shift and mayhaps a brief exchange, you take up your place outside the tent. The brisk winds outside wakes you up further right quick; but even so, your mind far too often than not seems to keep drifting to your nightmare. You are certain that there was more to it than simply the weight of the previous few days activities having finally gotten to you. If only you could just ---
"MOOOO!!!"
The pained cry of a cow on the wind cuts through the air, awakening your companions, and leaving you perhaps cursing over the circumstances! It seems a momentary slip of focus had been all the scarecrows needed to slip into a barn. But perhaps it's not too late!
OOC: Votes were a little inconclusive with 1 for dm rolling initiative, 1 against, and 1 impartial. So went with a bit of a half-hearted executive decision in rolling everyone's initiative but the 1 against. Storm, feel free to roll your initiative. As the Party scrambles to ready themselves and take in the situation, rustling from deeper in the fields seems to draw Gruk' attention. With a shout bespeaking a certainty of foes closer at hand, he rushes off deeper into the stalks, heedless of any voice of concern or the fields trampled in rush. As some of you might think to follow, another pained animal's cry from the nearby barn reminds you all of a far more pressing threat.
With a grimace, Idoza looks to the rest of you and says, "We'll deal with whatever is in the field, but the rest of you need to get the barns. Now!" She doesn't wait for a response before taking off after Gruk, cursing in just about every tongue she knew in between calls to the Half-Orc to 'Wait!'. Any yet thinking of giving pursuit know the barns to be to the northeast of the party's camp. The almost exact opposite of the direction Idoza and Gruk. Those that remain could ignore the barn troubles in hope of dealing with whatever was in the fields first.
But odds are that if you do, the bloody work of the scarecrows is all too likely to be done, and the creatures themselves perhaps long gone at that...
Being the light sleeper, Drux jumps up, weapons in hand. Hearing the death throes of the cows and the commands of Idoza, he bolts in the direction of the barns.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(come on guys there is a grid on the map. You know numbers and letters. There is even some tokens in the form of our first initials.)
(Now the reason for taking another level in rogue 😁)
IC:
Short bow readied, Cat bounds to K11 (25ft) hops the (Stone wall?) the bonus actions dashes to G11 behind the building she peaks around the corner if she see's anything deadly she shoots. Attack: 18 Damage: 6
If hit, make a DC 11 Wisdom Save or become frightened of the scarecrow until the end of the scarecrows next turn. If feared, you have disadvantage on all attack rolls and ability checks while within view of the scarecrow.
Ever the light sleeper and one to always a blade close at hand, Druxacmil manages to out pace even the last person on watch in his readiness to act. So quick at that, it's hard to say he even fully registered Idoza's words from an outside perspective, before he then rushed towards the sound of distress. Without hesitation, he leaps from the stone walls onto the stairway of the chicken coop, before descending down to engage the scarecrow at its best.
Groggily, Piers is yet able to follow suit, though takes a more circuitous route, as his main goal had been the bar itself. Although not quite able to reach the doors between needing to scramble over the fence and the coop being in the way, the words of power called upon to see his weapon enchanted had at least done a fair job drawing the attention of the scarecrow standing near the entry to the barn.
With shortbow already in hand, Cat takes a more cautious route in navigating her way around over a fence and behind a coop for some cover. While her own positioning would limit having a clear shot at the one closest, knowing it to be engaged by Drux judging by its movement, a risk is taken stepping briefly far enough out to take a shot for its back, before then ducking back around the corner. Of note just before reaching that relative safety is the scarecrow staggering a step, but hardly seeming concerned of the damage.
Now with more lively 'prey' arrayed before them, the scarecrows turn with an uncanny synchronicity to Druxacmil and Piers, grin wickedly, and approached jerkily at first, before abruptly lashing out with their hand scythes. Piers having just enough time to note the blood already on the blade of the on the one near him. Any struck by the rusted implements would then feel that seemed to eat at their very soul, and further intensify the already haunting presence of the nearby scarecrows.
Drux times his attack so that Piers isn’t caught up in a cone of fire. Drux lets loose an intimidating roar and then blows fire in the direction of both the scarecrows.
"Right!" Piers calls. Before he steps away he makes sure he gets some hits in! He swings his thorned staff with magically-enhanced force at scarecrow 1 (Attack: 24 Damage: 7 magical bludgeoning damage.)
He then raises the staff, and conjures a hawk spirit to circle the two scarecrows! (Summoning hawk spirit totem. Cat, when you attack Piers will use his reaction to give you advantage on your roll.)
Finally, he backs away slightly to E11, bracing for the blow. (S1 takes an attack of opportunity on Piers)
(To Delta: As a note, the wis save was for both of you and drux if hit. And as far as I can tell that 22 would certainly get Piers. To save time, I'm just gonna retroactively roll his wis save to see if that shillelagh would've been at disadvantage.)
S1 Movement: Dance over to D-12. S1 Action: Slice and Dice Multiattack on Piers. Strike #1 - Attack: 19 Damage: 8 nonmagical slashing. Strike #2 - Attack: 19 Damage: 8 nonmagical slashing. If hit but NOT previously affected, make a DC 11 Wisdom Save or become frightened of the scarecrow until the end of the scarecrows next turn. If feared, you have disadvantage on all attack rolls and ability checks while within view of the scarecrow.
S2 Action: ReadyPenance Stare Terrifying Glare on Druxacmil. Wisdom Save DC 11 or become both frightened and paralyzed until the end of the Scarecrow's next turn. (Triggering Condition being after claw fear drops off at the end of its turn.)
(To Storm & Delta: Here's a retroactive adv. roll for Cat's attack since Piers is granting adv. with his hawk. Just to see if it crits or not: 16, and if so, heres' the crit bonus damage: 3. (includes sneak attack bonus))
Although shaken by the strikes and nearly brought to his knees, a determined Druxacmil stood his ground and kept enough wits about him well enough to call out a warning to Piers. Then just as soon as the druid moves, he lets out a roar that seemed more to amuse the nearby scarecrow than scare it... until the accompanying breath of fire that left both shrieking and desperately trying to put themselves out!
Piers hadn't needed to be told twice! He'd move alright, but not before taking a crack at the scarecrows pumpkin head and tearing off chunks in the blow. Then in snapping his staff into the air, a spectral hawk appeared to fly out from the staff and circle scarecrows. In his retreat a vicious stroke of a scythe sails the man's way. Yet despite whatever terror it may induce, its amusement soon turned into shrieks of pain as the night is suddenly lit up by devastating flames.
Slipping out once more, Cat -- with some aerial assistance in the form of the spiritual hawk diving down to distract -- plants another clean shot in the head of a scarecrow! Only for the arrow to fall free leaving only a large dent, and further affirming the creatures supernatural resistance. Nevertheless, knowing every little bit counted, she soon ducked back around the corner and quieted her being. (Hide attempt successful)
Beaten, shot, and heavily burnt, neither of the scarecrows looked any more amused with the situation. But while Piers' foe had glared at the Dragonborn, seeing him badly wounded and exhaling smoke appeared to embolden it enough to circle around and continue hacking away at the druid. The other one, however, shuddered and hissed and glared at Druxacimil, appearing so enraged as to not know what to do! But then there eyes meet, and for a moment -- an instance at the very least, Drux glimpses himself being wrapped in flaming chains in their eyes, his draconic resilience failing him utterly as his tormentor loomed over him.
It is now the Player's Turn!
