It has been three days since you last slept in a bed. Since then, you have traveled through meadows, rolling green hills, and forests. While it's not unpleasant, you're all looking forward to a good bed and a hearty meal in Greenest tonight, the next town on your journey Northward.
It's already late in the evening as you turn a corner to see the outline of the city against the setting sun. For a little while, the vista is confusing, and the sunset has the orange glow of a sunrise. Then you realize: The city is a blaze. You see scared people running around and burning houses.
Just up ahead on the road, you can see a skirmish taking place outside a small house.

A few hours ago, hell broke loose. Kobolds, Goblins, and Humans stormed your small town of Greenest. You have all gathered in Bob's house on the outskirts of town. But even here is probably not safe for long.
As you step out of the small house to get to the keep and the protection of Castellan Escobert and the city militia, youâre surprised to find three kobolds outside the house. As soon as they see you they charge. They're carrying torches and knives. Youâre pretty sure kobolds see well in darkness, so you gather that the torches are for setting the house ablaze.
Environment
The whole town is cast in the dim light from the setting sun and the burning buildings and smaller fires around the streets. The bright light is close to the burning buildings and the fires.
The burning buildings are in danger of collapsing, and entering them is obviously hazardous.
A slowly moving stream winds its way through the town.
A stone keep is rising in the center of town.
In front of the house there is a low fence surrounding a small garden. To the north and to the east a small gravel road winds along.
The area contains a few, free standing, full grown trees, and the land to the south inclines away from the city.
Encounter
Three kobolds charge towards Bob and Tru as they step out the door. As they do, they scream something unintelligible while brandishing knives and torches.
Willin doesn't think he'll ever get used to sleeping outdoors. Still, the bucolic scenery of the journey has made up for the discomfort, and he has almost been able to let himself relax. Not quite, though: he doubts his patron has sent him here for a holiday, and he is certain trouble lies ahead, somewhere across the green fields.
So he should have been more prepared, but when the realisation strikes that the glow ahead is not just another pretty countryside sunset, but a town engulfed in flame, Willin stops short in shock. The sight is hauntingly familiar; this could be the same image that plagued his dreams after the bandits made their threat, the nightmares that drove him to seek out the crossroads, to become⊠what he is. For a fraction of an eternity, that's all he can see, and he stands there, mouth agape, paralyzed by the memory.
[OOC: Were Willin and Tama travelling as part of a larger caravan or some such? And if so, would Willin's background let him sus out who the leaders of the group are, who they look to for guidance or organisation, etc?
Also, for Tama: I'm curious what Willin would know of Tama from their time on the road? For his part, Willin would not have impressed much; he seems like a perfectly ordinary bureaucrat, bookish and somewhat reserved, and mostly keeps to himself. If asked why he's travelling, he's cagey, saying only that he was instructed to head north. He certainly hasn't revealed any kind of magical abilities.]
As the three figures emerge from the house one is clearly much smaller than the others. At a smidge over three foot tall, she could be mistaken for a child. As she begins to make her way towards the gate, the screams of the kobolds stop her in her tracks. She quickly knocks an arrow and aims at the closest one, before running as fast as her little legs will take her
((Not sure what the protocol is for writing OOC....she would try to get some distance between her and the kobolds. Her movement is only 25 ft though))
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Tru turns around and starts running around the house's corner in cover from the Kobolds. Behind her a thump can be heard as one of the Kobolds drop to the ground in a twisted schreech. His torch tumbles out of his hand and stops next to one of the fence posts still burning.
The other two kobolds throw their torches towards the house's thatched roof, then charge towards Bob, knives drawn.
One of the kobolds manages to get the knife in through a gap in Bob's armor and the knife bites deep. The other one's knife scratches harmlessly across the armor with the sound of nails on a chalkboard.
Sleeping under the stars and on the ground brought Tama back to her days in the military, time she didn't talk about but kept to herself in reflection. During the day traveling she kept mostly to herself watching for any signs of danger at the ready to protect those she's been traveling with. During the evenings around the fire she would mostly listen to others tell their tales but through the time spent traveling Willin would have learned that Tama's wife, Kali, and adopted daugher, Niddla, were both killed when a dragon attacked their town where Kali worked as a blacksmith. Tama is journeying to rebuild her old skills and seek that dragon and get revenge. During the evenings around the fire she tinkers on weapons she is reforming from what she could scavenge from her burned home.
Seeing the glow of Greenest brings back memories of seeing her own town under similar circumstances. She eyes the weapons she's been working on, but they're not ready yet so she prepares her bow ready to lend aid, hoping she's not too late this time and may be able to spare others what she has experienced.
Bob letâs out a large groan as the knife sinks in, clenching over the wound he then swings with his hammer upwards towards the Kobold that stabbed him.
The kobolds' screeches snap Willin out of his shock, and he runs toward the fight, the power granted by his patron coming all too easily to his fingertips as he mutters a spell, sending a bolt of crackling energy toward one of the kobolds.
[Eldritch Blast vs Kobold (4) (in game log): 19 for 6 force damage]
From atop the hill to the south, a bolt of crackling energy screams down and slams into one of the kobolds. Bob hears the sizzling as the energy burns its flesh and it crumples to the ground. He looks up to see two figures on the road on the hill to the south.
The last kobold looks around, realizing that it's alone and makes to flee.
Tama will run up just in front of Willin with her bow at the ready and fire at the lone Kobold. The tension of a bow reminding her of her youth before learning other weapons, and thinking to herself how she will need to finish what she's working on to get those weapons back. She releases her fingers on the string as she lets out a breath aiming for between the kobold's eyes. 14to hit for 9 damage, rolled on the character sheet.
The arrow strikes the last remaining kobold in the chest, and Araroris and Bob hear a wheezing sound as the kobold collapses to the ground in a pool of its blood.
As Bob stands, his shield arm pressed against the side of the blade sticking out from his lower right stomach, he turns as he watches his the roof of his house going up in flames. He sighs deeply, his eyes showing hints of watering, before clenching the locket around his neck and closing his eyes for a breif moment.
He then turns and asks the others if theyâre alright, while slowly making to the gate still hunch over from the wound.
Tama walks up to the three individuals standing by the felled Kobolds, removing her spent arrow from the one she felled. "Looks like things are going to the hells around here. My name's Tama, my companion is Willin, we were traveling towards town when we saw the fires. We both know what it is to need to save a home, how can we help?"
Tru is about to fire again when she sees another arrow bring the kobold down and a blast of energy kill the third. She stands for a moment, before running to Bob looking at his wound in horror. She glances to the house
"Nice shot," Willin gives Tama a nervous nod of appreciation at her archery skill, embarrassed to have revealed his ability and worried about how she and the others will react to it. Studiously avoiding looking at the kobold corpses, he starts trying to put out the nearest fires. Is this why the Whisperer sent me here? he wonders. He knew the town would burn, and I could help? And if so, am I too late already?
[Control Flames repeatedly to extinguish a 5-foot cube of fire every six seconds; depending on how established the blaze is that might be a bit ineffectual, but worth a try]
Bob smiles gratefully at their efforts before saying, âdonât worry about my home, I have my memories up hear (tapping his head), itâs just an old pile of bricksâ he laughs slightly, clearly still a little upset about the fire starting. âthere are people in need, they deserve our protection, best to divert our efforts there, theyâre what matterâ.

The fence (where the first torch fell) is fully engulfed in flames and is beyond saving.
