I want to play through Tyrany of Dragons with me at the DM helm and you as my adventure seeking players.
Disclaimers:
1. If you're intimately familiar with the two parts, hoard of the dragon queen or rise of Tiamat, then you have to demonstrate superb restraint to not meta-game.
2. This is my first round of PbP DMing. I have been running games on and off for the last 20 years, but never on this medium.
3. I'm on European time.
My DM style: I storytell, which means you're sometimes allowed to do things that is cool for the story and the group, but doesn't follow the rules. It also means that sometimes things happen to you that isn't RaW. I prefer a good mix of roleplaying and dice rolling. I'm very happy to wait while the group figures out what to do and how to do it, as long as it's in character.
Your restrictions: Please don't be silly. I'm not banning anything out of hand. But if you want to play something that's esoteric and special, you need to work hard to make it fit into the world and keep up the suspension of disbelief.
Timeline: I plan to start playing in the middle of February, which means i will be closing for submissions Feb 7th 2023. After this point, we will move to build communal understanding of the world and any shared background you may want.
Technicals: I will setup a discord for out of band conversation, and we will run the campaign here on this forum (if possible; see disclaimer #2). I expect about one ingame post every day to keep everyone in the loop.
Submissions: Please let me know your interest in this thread by posting your player's: - name - race - class - short introduction Please also include your preferred play style. If you have any additional questions or i forgot anything, please feel free to ask and comment below, and i will do my best to answer.
Hello! It appears that I'm Interested! My character is Ace, a Dragonborn Rogue who exels in games needing cards or dice. He plans to be a "gentleman thief" who steals from the rich or noble mostly for the fun in the amounts of excitement and suspense, and leaves calling cards, but is only starting out as a regular street thief. I'm also not entirely sure what you mean by "preferred play style?"
My character is Marcellus, a human Paladin of the Pandion Militant Order. The Pandions, seek out evil and darkness to keep the good people of the world safe. (Refer to the David Eddings Series on Sparhawk). My play style is a combination of standard D&D, and role playing with the other players, and the DM. I have been playing D&D from the very beginning as well as being a storyteller (I am a published author).
I’d like to play Gwylla Brightstar, a massively bookish and reclusive, though not at all arrogant high Elf wizardry student. She was deemed to have too much potential to waste in the library and has been kicked out to learn about the “real world”.
My play style favors a solid adventure story with challenges in and out of combat, and room for a strong topping of whimsy.
I know the first chapter of HotDQ. Nothing else, and I can avoid using that knowledge to my advantage.
Short Intro: Aethon was born looking different than his parents, where they had bright colors and plumage, his own feathers were black and his features were like that of a crow. The elders said that it was an ill omen, and so he was sent away from his people. This was how he came to be at the monastery, the place where he grew up, learning how to hone his body. He has become an adult now though and feels that to truly train his mind and body he must look outside the monastery walls and hone his skills in the outside world.
Myself: I enjoy a healthy mix of RPing and combat, Ive also been both DM and player over the years and enjoy both sides of gaming. Ive never played Tyranny of the Dragons but have always wanted to. If youd like to know anything else please let me know.
Intro: Depending on exact setting, Alcazar was killed some time ago, but did not die. He has been trying to understand the hows and whys since then (jealous competitor? Vengeful noble? Actual crimes?). Every day he tries to recall a little more from his past, but at the moment all he has are (negiated details). The exact situation can be determined if accepted. He was found wandering the wilderness by the peroson for whom he now works. His current journey is just another job since, despite his confusion, he still remembers his training and still likes food and shelter and certain comforts.
I prefer the RP/puzzle side of things to combat. When in combat it's great if the DM does the boring rolls (like initiative and sometimes perception), and if initiative is grouped bc PbP gets massively bogged down in combats. While in combat I tend to be pretty tactical and like maps. Check out my other posts for play style.
Class: Fighter - I would like to figure some way to develop his 'affinity' to lightening in some way.
Intro:
Kronk is an abomination, there is no other word for it. It seems a rather insane Necromancer was experimenting with mashing together different corpses and body parts. In one experiment, his last, unfortunately for him (or maybe not), he was working with the corpse of an halfling and a corpse of an ogre (one of which might have been the original Kronk, who ever that was, but that would be really stretching it.) Needless to say he was working 'discretely,' fearing persecution, out in the middle of nowhere in a very secluded wood. As it happened a thunder and lightening storm sprang up out of nowhere, putting him into a pretty foul mood; but the upshot was dramatic to say the least. Just as he cast the final parts of the spell he was struck by one fork of a bolt of lightening, the other one struck the halfling/ogre mess he was working on. It appears to have killed the necromancer but at the same time transferred his life force into the mess he was ensorcelling, causing it to animate into the being that calls itself Kronk. By-the-by, for some reason unknown to himself, Kronk HATES necromancers. He has no memory of what happened, just remembers coming to in a storm next to a rather crispy corpse and the brutal struggle to find a place in the world that followed. Kronk has a rather strange affinity for dead things, not anything really corrupt or depraved, but he thinks that they talk to him and that he can sometimes talk to them. He has no fear in that regard. I class Kronk as a half-orc, but he is not really, as stated he is a monstrosity, with a rather intense charisma for such a creature. He thinks that lightening gives him powers, just what kind, well it could be that he is just delusional, but who knows, there are stranger things running around. When he became aware of his surroundings for the first time he was very confused, no thoughts entered his head as to what had happened or what was going on. Stumbling around in the woods he came upon the necromancer's abode wherein he found supplies and, most fortuitously for him, some armour that fit, no only that, the armour help hide what he was from unsympathetic folk who would rather burn him to a crisp - the Frankenstein Syndrome one might say. He also found the iron bar that he uses as a weapon of choice at the present time, along with strange medallion; made of some sort of red metal, it depicted an alien thing that appeared to be eating itself - very disturbing to look upon. Secretly, in his heart of hearts, Kronk thinks that the creature depicted in the medallion created him. For quite some time, Kronk wandered the edges of civilized spaces trying to figure out how to fit in; he soon came to realize that he could make room for himself using the iron bar and his ferocious strength to make himself fit in. People now rarely give him much grief and, surprisingly, seem to be rather polite around him.
I like playing D&D; been at it off and on for years, ever since Gary Gygax first came up with the game. I like puzzles and treasure - which usually requires combat to secure :) I think initiative should be per character, otherwise there arises situations where hang-back characters using ranged attack get stuck with their thumbs in dark places when they should be delivering attacks. If they roll poorly, well that could be played any number of ways that would actually add to the flavor of the game.

Mordecai is a rather elderly fellow. He stands about 5'10 slightly hunched over with white hair and beard draped in the forest green cowl of his runic cloak. Upon his shoulder sits a great horned owl who observes all around with caution and intrigue. Mordecai comes from a land far away where he was one of many druid keepers of a magic grove of dryad trees. Half a century ago the grove began to shrink and not support new dryad trees. Mordecai has been sent out to seek a new land that will accept the seeds and begin a new grove, but no druid sent out before him has been successful in finding adequate foreign soil. Mordecai will be the first or die trying.
I got into D&D as a kid and mostly like to theory craft characters, worlds, whatever. Now I'm in my 30s and enjoy chill game play and having fun. I don't mind a challenge and prefer a support role. Also never played by post on here before so it will be a learning experience for me. I can switch to Cleric if the group thinks it would be better.
Torus makes his living as a professional, high end con man. He appears to be a man of means looking for investors in highly lucrative markets, for paltry sums. He takes off with the money as soon as the jig is up. He has avoided detection by avoiding spending the money himself. He sends the money home to his wife and children.
That is until recently. His wife has discovered the source of the money and threatened to cut ties with him- disappearing with the children- if he doesn't find honest work.
Torus is having a hard time giving up the riches. He is descended from nobility, but the money was gone long before he was born. He feels the strength of his line calling out for an end to their house's weakness. He's holding out hope for one big score before going home...
Backstory: Being the only daughter to her father, Ichika was expected to join the town shrine and become a priestess. Growing up, she rarely knew a time when her father wasn’t assisting with war. Her father’s talk of war and his armour and weapons eventually rubbed off on young Ichika. Despite her duties at the shrine, she signed up and joined the army, wishing to make her father proud. But no matter how much she excelled in battle, her father still largely ignored her achievements. After another battle where her father was gravely wounded, knowing he would never have a male heir he always wanted, he demanded Ichika to return home and resume her duties at the shrine. Heartbroken, Ichika did leave the army, but she never returned home. She held onto her armour, her weapon, and kept going. Somewhere out there were deeds of valour and honour even greater than the victory at war. She would find them, she would conquer them, and she would show her father how wrong he was to think that a shrine priestess and a wife was all he could be proud of her as.
I like PBP for its potential for roleplaying, it gives you time to think about what your character would act before you post. I like to explore opportunities to roleplay, developing relationship with other PCs, and to experience character growth through story-telling. And of course some nice, challenging combat now and then.
appearance: a white tall elf with semi-long brown hair and a medium build. wears a pendant around his right wrist.
personality/characteristics and background: short: a loner who values knowledge more than *almost* anything else. long: blar was banished out of his school due to his extreme character and his dangerous love for creation. during his studying he was a loner even though he had no problem speaking to people, but his peers had a problem speaking to him. due to his extreme greed and obsession towards knowledge he often shut himself in the library or his room. outside school people also reported blar's visible greed. due to having no ethics when it comes to knowledge and materials for his growth he's often shunned by people who know him only by the name. he isn't too different from other knowledge seeking lunatics but some of his former classmates reported seeing him talking to the chained pendant he used to hang by his wrist (the chain wasn't short, he just wrapped the rest around his wrist). overall: chaotic good
preferred playstyle: free spirit. depends on the situation I can stay by the window and listen or jump out of it, I don't have any style in particular but I guess I would fall into the unexpected silly. for the gameplay itself: as you would probably expect from a wizard, unless I know for sure I won't die / get trapped in the middle I will latch onto a tank and support him / shoot spells from behind. I am the type to rush into a battle but ever since I got insta killed by some ooze I'm much calmer.
Then my preferred play style has a good mix of RP and Combat. (Maybe a bit more RP than combat) I just play my character and do what they would do, and I do like making it funny occasionly.
Appearance: Male, 6'10", suntanned skin and long blond braided hair.
Phaeton is sent from home to repent for his wrongdoings. He was overly confident of his abilities, 'poked the bear' out of curiosity, and in his hubris he brought destruction upon his community. Being expelled from his home has nearly ruined him. It was all he knew, all he cared about. The outside world should have remained outside, but now he must set out on a path to restore his name, and bring honor to his family. Being out of his comfort for a few weeks, he then saw more wonders than he could have ever imagined. Forests stretching further than even his eyes could see, amazing fortresses made by dwarves, the energetic cities of man, exquisite inventions of the gnomes, the beauty of the elven language, and the mouth watering food of the halflings. He soon felt a curiosity for everything unknown to him. Then, he encountered the monsters. Oh, how he marveled at the monsters that found their home in this world. He was instantly fascinated with these creatures, how they survive in the wilderness, found their place in a world they were hostile to, and were met with the same hostility. When left unharmed, he would always try to avoid provoking an attack from any creature. But if they'd attack, Phaeton would give his all to deal with them. He worships his father, Apollo(willing to change to fit narrative), who gave him his celestial heritage and born affinity with light.
My preferred play style would be with a coöperative party. A story driven campaign, with plenty of encounters, being combat, or roleplaying with NPC's and party members. Experience wise, I've been DM'ing for about seven months(DoIP) and only did a couple of solo adventures as a player. So it's fair to say that I'm still learning what dnd can be, and I've been kind of obsessed with it since the summer of 2020 when I discovered Viva La DND, Dungeons and Daddies, Critical Role, and Dimension 20. I understand that these are played as a game to be viewed or heard by many, so I'm aware that my experience will not be like any of them.
Playstyle: I guess I would say I like a narrative-driving playstyle; a mix of roleplay, combat and puzzles/skill challenges, always in service of collaboratively telling the story. I like when the game is a series of interesting (even difficult) choices, and chances to make use of a character's abilities and personality, rather than just rolling dice at each other. I love a good dramatic twist, but also some moments of humour; after all, one needs some light to see the darkness by.
The character below is a starting point; I'd be happy to adjust to better integrate with the campaign world, or even completely change to cover a gap in party composition.
Name: Willin Fallkind Race: High Elf Class: Warlock (Pact of the Chain) Backstory:
Willin Fallkind was a simple bookkeeper, once.
As keeper of the accounts for his small farming village, he had managed to keep the protection payments demanded by the local bandit gang hidden deep in the ledgers. But one season the harvest failed, and there was no money to pay off the ruffians. An ultimatum was given, and if Willin didn't hand over the cash, the village would be razed and the fields salted.
So, the night before the deadline, at midnight, Willin went to the crossroads just outside the town, spilled his own blood, and begged for the power to defeat the bandits.
Someone—something—heard his plea.
When the bandits came to the village, Willin found himself able to destroy them with little more than a thought, draining the very life essence from their bodies. It's hard to say who was more horrified by this newfound power—the bandits (since within minutes none were left alive to ask), the other villagers, or Willin himself. Despite saving the town, he was exiled by his terrified former friends.
Now he wanders the Sword Coast, occasionally at the direction of the being that granted his wish. His patron's latest instruction has Willin heading for <starting location>; but is the being's intention to help its inhabitants—or to destroy them?
DM could choose which would work best for the group. I'm not really sure how to play so I'll learn as we go. BTW, I don't know what Discord is. I'm in Canada so I don't think European time will be a problem
My idea for a character is a hill dwarven female druid called Finelleen Fireforge (Fin for her friends).
Raised within her clan, along many brothers and sisters, she was a bit different to her kin. While she was supposed to take up a smiths', weapon or armormakers' path in her life, her greatest joy were plants and animal friends. She usually was seen as a wierdo, she was always loved by her family and as disapointed they might be, she felt a great support for her love towards nature and was encouraged to follow that path - especially by her mother. As a story hook Fin might be on her quest to find a new groove or in search of new herbs to complete her journal.
I'd love to hear your take on that story and character and any input you may have to include Fin in your party.
I am fine with your approach to DnD. Love RPing and rolling dice (although hate systems like MERP and rollmaster where you might have a table to how you woke up ;))
I don't mind discord and 1 post a day sounds reasonable.
Hope this helps. Looking forward to hearing from you!
Good morning, sir! I would love to join the right campaign and help build the story through creative play. I have a fair bit of experience playing virtually (Discord / Above VTT) but look forward to giving this format a try.
I prefer to play in character and make decisions as my character would in the game, which might not always be the smartest decision if someone was meta gaming. I do enjoy puzzles as well as unique use of my characters abilities.
I enjoy creating characters and giving them just enough of a backstory to get them started, and then letting them develop at the table. The majority of their history should really be created in game. So, depending on what level you wanted to start everyone at could determine who the most appropriate character would be to play. I have created a lot of dual class characters, but anything low level could be single class, on the pathway to unlocking more of their potential.
Is it Dutch, the Deep Gnome Sorlock, kidnapped as a child and forced into a psychic assassin training camp until he finally escaped, unscathed but for his split personality? Normally quite reserved. He never wanted this life, but unfortunately now combat has a bad habit of making the not so nice side of his personality emerge.
Or little Nobriki the Fairy Palladin, who dipped into a warlock in service to prove his worthiness to Queen Titania who saw a tiny mote of potential in him, even after having been laughed out of the great hunt in front of King Oberon. Earnest, honest and chivalrous to a T.
Or Maletor Belladictus, Hexblood psi warrior fighter and divination wizard, whose connection to the hags has lost him his family and friends, and is seeking a place where he belongs. Not helped by his forthright but accidentally cocky nature.
Happy hunting and all the best to you regardless of your choice, good sir!
Green-Shield is a relatively simple concept of an Woodland Elf who fights with a longsword and shield, and wearing armour, unlike the typical barbarian who goes unarmoured and wields great weapons. From his Elven heritage, his way of fighting is more sophisticated, and the rage, rather than intense bloodlust, is a deep focus and intensity, rising out of his need to protect the forests and his homeland. But although he fights on the frontlines of his people to protect the forests, there is no end of threats to the Elves way of life, and he realizes, if he's to ever bring peace to his people, he will need to first leave them himself, and seek out the source of the troubles that plague them.
Preferred play style: I enjoy story-telling, and I have a lot of fun playing with others to build and create that story. I love when everyone can come together and tell a story together. I'm more than happy to sit back and let someone else shine, I enjoy it most when everyone gets their moment and opportunity to shine. In regards to the three pillars I enjoy roleplay and combat equally, a little bit more than exploration although that can be fun too. Typically I'm used to playing pbp games on discord, so this would be my first game in the forum, but I've been interested in playing Horde of the Dragon Queen, and it's sequel, for some time, so I'm branching out from discord games to find an opportunity to play. I haven't played it before, but I've played some of the Adventure League modules based in Phlan, which I believe adds some context to the main campaign, but I have no intention of metagaming. I want to experience the game as it's meant to be played.
Introduction: Thuronur is a doubtful and disbelieving person and it usually takes long to build a relationship with him but once he gets to know you, he's willing to do anything to protect you. Thuronur is a hyper troublemaker that has a past of stealing. Standing at 5'11, with blonde hair, blue eyes, 129 pounds, and 49 years old.
Play Style: A co-op game and I really like solving puzzles and getting into the character I love action or combat with a mix of drama.

name: Blar (bla-aa-r) Praph (praf)
class: wizard
appearance: a white tall elf with semi-long brown hair and a medium build. wears a pendant around his right wrist.
personality/characteristics and background: short: a loner who values knowledge more than *almost* anything else.
long: blar was banished out of his school due to his extreme character and his dangerous love for creation. during his studying he was a loner even though he had no problem speaking to people, but his peers had a problem speaking to him. due to his extreme greed and obsession towards knowledge he often shut himself in the library or his room. outside school people also reported blar's visible greed. due to having no ethics when it comes to knowledge and materials for his growth he's often shunned by people who know him only by the name. he isn't too different from other knowledge seeking lunatics but some of his former classmates reported seeing him talking to the chained pendant he used to hang by his wrist (the chain wasn't short, he just wrapped the rest around his wrist).
overall: chaotic good
preferred playstyle: free spirit. depends on the situation I can stay by the window and listen or jump out of it, I don't have any style in particular but I guess I would fall into the unexpected silly. for the gameplay itself: as you would probably expect from a wizard, unless I know for sure I won't die / get trapped in the middle I will latch onto a tank and support him / shoot spells from behind. I am the type to rush into a battle but ever since I got insta killed by some ooze I'm much calmer.
Then my preferred play style has a good mix of RP and Combat. (Maybe a bit more RP than combat) I just play my character and do what they would do, and I do like making it funny occasionly.
Name: Phaeton Lykios
Race: Aasimar
Class: Cleric Light domain
He worships his father, Apollo (willing to change to fit narrative), who gave him his celestial heritage and born affinity with light.
Playstyle:
I guess I would say I like a narrative-driving playstyle; a mix of roleplay, combat and puzzles/skill challenges, always in service of collaboratively telling the story.
Name: Willin Fallkind
Race: High Elf
Class: Warlock (Pact of the Chain)
Backstory:
I have several characters:
1) Verdove Underfoot, stout halfling, Rogue level 1
2) Shalynn Yealdrin, Wood elf, Ranger level 1
3) Grarnet Riverhammer, Human, Sorcerer/Draconic bloodline level 1
4)Jenndeth Stoutale, Mountian dwarf, Fighter level 1
DM could choose which would work best for the group. I'm not really sure how to play so I'll learn as we go. BTW, I don't know what Discord is. I'm in Canada so I don't think European time will be a problem
Hi,
I'd love to be part of your group.
Li.
Btw, I'm from Europe too. CET.
"I don't care, I'm still free. You can't take the sky from me..."
Emil,
Good morning, sir!
Nobriki - Satyr Paladin - Oath of the Ancients
name - Green-Shield
race - Wood Elf
class - Barbarian
Name: Thuronur
Race: Wood Elf
Class: Rogue
Introduction: Thuronur is a doubtful and disbelieving person and it usually takes long to build a relationship with him but once he gets to know you, he's willing to do anything to protect you. Thuronur is a hyper troublemaker that has a past of stealing. Standing at 5'11, with blonde hair, blue eyes, 129 pounds, and 49 years old.
Play Style: A co-op game and I really like solving puzzles and getting into the character I love action or combat with a mix of drama.
DMing:
