The party makes camp and even lights a campfire. The fire at times changes hue from golden yellow to sky blue, and cherry red. Harmless and beautiful.
This night the party rest under the stars with the wreckage of Loomlurch nearby. Elkhorn, Will, and the children depart for the treehouse at Little Oak
Each of you can chat as you finally have a moment to unwind and eat some dinner.
Aoife looks delighted at the prospect of having a rest. "It has been a long day. Magically turning up here, even if it was only an hour or two ago was pretty tiring and we've had a few sticky situations since then."
She sits next to the campfire and pulls out her panflute. She gives it an experimental tune, causing a high shriek to be emitted (performance 2). She shakes the pipes and puts them away again, muttering "Must have been damaged in the magical transportation..."
During dinner, Valrieth takes out a notebook out of her backpack and peppers Aoife with questions about her date of birth, which way she was facing when she came through the portal, whether she saw any crows on (and how many?) on the day before she came to Prismeer, etc. Val is eager to incorporate the half-orc into her predictions. She takes notes on Aoife's answers, and in between her questions, Val talks -- more to herself than Aoife -- about waxing and waning moons and "houses" and "signs."
After dinner, as the group sits around the fire, Val shares some of the history of the group. (See post #2451 and post #2454 for a good summary.) In mentioning Sir Talavar, Val takes out the faerie dragon's "sword," which looks more like a long, thin-bladed dagger to Aoife. At first, Val plans merely to show it to Aoife, knowing that the half-orc seems to have an interest in weapons. But as she unsheathes the dagger and looks at it, she sees the moon reflected in the blade. She seems to think that that's a Sign and offers the dagger to Aoife, saying, "I think that you are meant to have this dagger. It's maybe not as deadly as your shortswords, but it was the dagger of Sir Talavar, an emissary of the Titania the Summer Queen. The good faeries forged this dagger, and maybe its magic will bring you good luck against the wicked fey we will certainly face in our quest to find Zybilna and free her from being frozen in time."
(OOC: It's a Dagger, +1. Everyone but Aoife normally fights with magic, and Val hasn't used the dagger since it was given to her. In case we face foes who are resistant to nonmagical weapons, Aoife could put the weapon to much better user than Val can.)
“It really has been a long day, aye? Dunnae worry about yer musical talents ah’m sure yer good at it.” Finley nods at Aoife and finds a resting spot where he can lean against a wall, even in his full armor which almost feels like a second skin to him, so that he can doze a little as the others talk. He listens in for the most part, “again y’all’s arrival was very fortuitous and we thank ye for all th’ help ye’ve given.”

Finley Stoneshaft, Dwarf Artificer - The Wild Beyond the Witchlight, Falkas, Half-Elf Drow Warlock - Keys of Empire
In telling stories, Valrieth pulls out of her backpack a tiny ~3" diameter disk with a sculpture of a dragonfly on it. Val explains that the markings are like a sundial, but it must be magical because "The dragonfly doesn't cast a shadow on the face of the dial. At least, not yet. I'm not sure whether there's a command word or..." Her voice trails off as she looks at the sundial. Now, in the light of the moon above Prismeer, the face of the sundial seems to glow slightly with a pearly light, and the dark shadow of the dragonfly is clearly visible against the pearly surface. "Oh!", Val says simply. She turns the sundial from side to side, watching the shadow move. "Fascinating! It must be a sort of moon dial," she says. She holds out her hand at arm's length to help her sight specific stars in the sky. Then she aligns the moon dial correctly and sets it down on the ground. The dragonfly shadow accurately indicates the time. Val says cheerily, "Well, that will certainly help with taking star chart readings! Knowing the correct time is important for star chart accuracy, you know."
Val gets out her notebook and takes some notes. She happily spends the rest of the time before the Long Rest quietly taking measurements and adding information about Aoife to her star charts.
(OOC: If we're ready to move on to the next morning and heading back to Clapperclaw and the balloon to take us back to Downfall, we just need to decide how everyone will ride Elidon.)
As Valrieth said last night, she's happy to Wild Shape into a squirrel and just ride in one of Aoife's or Finley's pouches. That way, Elidon only has the burden of two full-sized people. Val says that while she's always been fascinated by flight and wonders what it must be like to be a bird, she is actually afraid of heights. Gan-Re, their aarakocra friend, picked her up from time to time in Hither to fly her somewhere, and she says that it made her feel a little light-headed. She'd feel much safer tucked in a pouch, if the other two don't mind. "Only, make sure that you don't fall off of Elidon either!"
Val is reasonably creative at solving problems with spells, but she's not sure how to help Aoife and Finley stay on Elidon. With the new day, Val could prepare Enhance Ability, but that spell only lasts 1 hour, so she couldn't maintain that for the whole ride. Do the others have any ideas?
"Ah've got me rope if'n Elidon doesn't mind us bein' tied to 'em, aye?" Finley offers, "It's very secure and quite magical, it'll listen ta me and there'd be nothin' to worry about either of us who'll be riding and o' course ah'd never let ye fall Val."

Aoife tries to answer Val's questions about her place and time of birth with as much detail as possible, but her brow grows more furrowed as they continue. Eventually she looks quite baffled and her answers become monosyllabic and less sure. She perks up when Val offers her the dagger though, and her eyes moisten.
"Thanks, Val. This is... this is very special." She does a few experimental swipes and jabs at the air with it. "It's beautiful!"
Once they start discussing the trip, Aoife nods at Finley. "Sounds like a useful rope. I'm happy with that as long as Elidon is."
6 hours of biting winds and Elidon lands in front of Nib's Cave. You may need a moment to regain the feeling in your legs as numbness has set in at some point of the ariel journey.
Elidon says "Farewell. I go to see my mate Lamorna. You can find us at the Wayward Pools"
ilifir falls to the ground, bell in his hand, and bows to elidon "farewell elidon, and great thanks for your assistance, it saved us significant traveling time we did not have to spare" he eyes the cavern willingly, then gestures towards it, spike running down his arm and into the air, disapearing as he does so to look around the interior again

This Mug immediately shared with me a transcendental tale of an Infinite Mug that anchors the Universe and keeps it from folding in on itself. I filed this report under "illogical nonsense" and asked why its sign is in Times New Roman font, when it is basic knowledge that Arial Black is a far superior font. I wondered: How did this mug even get past the assembly line with its theistic beliefs and poor font choices?

Elidon says "Farewell. I go to see my mate Lamorna. You can find us at the Wayward Pools"
When they land, Valrieth finally transforms from a squirrel back into a harengon. She thanks Elidon heartily and promises that they'll return to find him at the Wayward Pools once they've finished their business in Downfall. She waves at him as flies away.
Since they're so close, Val suggests that they visit Nib again. "Aoife has never met Nib," Val says, "and maybe his penance will require him to make something for her too! And we can give him the good news that we've defeated Granny Nightshade."
Once they're done at Nib's Cave, they can hike back to the spot where Clapperclaw should be waiting with the balloon. It should be just about 1 mile north of the cave if she remembers correctly.
(OOC: Rolling even/odd for Val's Cosmic Omen for today: 1.)
Nib's cave is covered in gold, but Nib is nowhere to be found.
"Oh! He's not here," says Valrieth. She sounds a bit glum. Honestly, she was excited about getting to show Aoife the fey magic. Spinning gold coins other objects! She remembers seeing it, but even at the time she couldn't believe her eyes or even quite perceive exactly what Nib was doing. She casts Produce Flame and holds the flame up over her head to look around. As she looks, she says, "Nib said that he had led a greedy existence, and when he asked Granny Nightshade for help in making amends and in putting his ill-gotten fold to good use, she cursed him! He had to sit in this cave 'forever' and spin his gold into useful items for anyone who came by. And the ghosts of his past seemed to lurk in the cave and haunt him. He said that he could never leave the cave unless Granny Nightshade was gone from Thither. We didn't dare to promise that we could do that for him, but I told him that we could rid Thither of the hag if we were successful in restoring Zybilna. I guess now that we defeated her, he was finally able to leave!" That makes her smile. She likes helping other creatures, and even if he had been a greedy, heartless man, he seemed sorry for it and was certainly working hard to make amends.
Amidst the heap of gold are 3 items also made of gold.
Boots
Bracers
Bag
The flame in Val's hand glints off the gold coins, but she's ignores that. She's looking for any sign of Nib, and if Nib really isn't here, she's looking for the ghosts that were haunting him. Perception17
As long as Val doesn't see Nibs or the ghosts, she says, "I wonder if these are other items that Nib spun from his gold but that he never got to give away. Or maybe he left them here for us as a 'thank you' since I said that we might be able to set him free!" She smiles at the thought. "I'll check out the bag," Val says, and when she gets close enough, she uses her telekinesis to pick it up. She shakes the bag a little bit to make sure that it doesn't hold anything dangerous and then she brings it through the air to the ground beside her. She opens the bag and looks inside.
"Ah hope that he got free and don't 'ave ta do anymore bidding of th' hags." Finley nods as he walks over to the gold, moving some of it around with his boot, "ain't no one deservin' to be condemned to be some kind o' slave and whether all this is a thank ye or not well, ah'm sure we could use it in the process of freeing th' fae o' th' hags if it aren't cursed."

The bag has 8 green mung beans inside. Val does not see anything amiss or any apparitions in the cave.
Valrieth looks at the beans for a minute and then says, "Huh!" She sounds non-plussed. "The bag has 8 beans in it."
Val reaches in to take one bean out of the bag to make sure that they're real. She looks at it for a moment, sniffs it, and even puts it up to her ear. Does she see anything unusual about the bean? (Nature: 24) Val puts the bean back in the bag. "I'm not sure whether the bag is magical, the beans are magical, or both...or neither!" Unfortunately, Val didn't prepare Detect Magic today. "From what we know of Nib, some part of it must be magical, right? But I'm not sure whether we're supposed to plant the beans or cook the beans or...maybe...um...throw the beans at our enemies? I'll study the bag and the beans more later. Unless you think that it's worth using one of your scrolls to identify it, Finley?"
(OOC: I'm trying to let Ilifir or Aoife check out the bracers and boots while Val looks into the bag.)
Val can't tell by just looking at the bag and beans. The beans look like regular Mung beans though your right Nib's creation is usually magical in some way.
