Mud takes the bit of secondhand hardtack from Phodoxia, looks at it philosophically, then pops it in his mouth.
Talking quietly as he chews. Sailor's manners. "Not our provlem, you say, Doxsh... in shome ways nothing ish our problem, 'cept food in our belly. In other waysh, everything is. Had a midnight watch after I got promoted to full shailor. First time I stared for hoursh at the wide sea and unbroken horizon in all directions with all the stars blazing above. World's so big and we, my ship, my crew, me, we're so small. First time I felt Procan's presence and knew it true. Thrill of freedom, to sail unknown waters and sight dishtant shores. Trust the shkies, adapt like water. No better life than one lived free."
He pauses and glances at Phodoxia earnestly, done chewing. "Only what good is that if not everyone is free? Pirates, slavers, they take that all away. Kill and enslave for no reason 'cept to put gold in their pocket and food in their belly. Never been much for rules, me, maybe more like guidelines. And I don't know what you say you can't do. But I can't enjoy Procan's freedom if I selfishly take it away from others undeserved. Turns to ash in my mouth."
They walk througth tghe forest and they finally made up to the top of a hill. The climb is not easy for the vegetation is abundant, Rockrose, fern, roots of the trees, made it difficult to trverse. And they find no animal tread among the vegetation, but they manage to reach the top of it, but it is well covered by flora too, at least the dense canopy of the trees gives them shadow
"It should be over here...." says Rasen "I only remember that there was a ventilation shaft in the top of this hill... the mine should be below us... let's look for it shall we?" he says starting to look around.
"If everyone is free," Phodoxia says, sourly. "I guess that's why you left, huh? To be free. Free of what? No friends, no ties, no obligations to your tribe, but then nobody to get your back when things go wrong, like they always do. That's a good way to make yourself a dead goblin, you know. Being alone out in the world. Besides, what does it mean to be free? No pirates, no slavers? Well, I don't know any of those myself, but how free am I, 'cause I can't find any food. 'Cause I don't have any friends to help me out in a pinch. This human here Rasen wasn't free an hour ago 'cause a big ol' fish monster just about ate him. Are you gonna kill all the fish monsters too? Go ahead, live your life for an ideal that's never going to happen." She sticks her tongue out, and then giggles. "At least you're free to eat that stuff. Smells awful to me, I can't stomach it. Maybe we should free ourselves and eat some rocks, too!" Still chuckling, she tags along with the rest of the group.
Phodoxia squints in the bright sunlight as they crest the top of the hill. A ventilation shaft, at the top of the hill, huh? Sure. Why not? She dutifully pokes around the tree roots and the dense bushes and thickets, but doesn't find anything that looks like a ventilation shaft. She's still fuming inside. We make deals. We make trades. We tie ourselves to each other in families and tribes. We have to. That's how life is. Freedom is the stupidest idea I ever heard. Why do I only find weirdos outside the tribe? Because they're outside the tribe for a reason. She sighs. Just like me.
Grrzark helps to hunt for the ventilation shaft too, nose bent close to the ground. I bet giant frogs like hot springs. Visions of warm baths dance behind his eyes as he sniffs and breathes for any change in air around on the top of the hill.
Mud smiles and shrugs, then stretches his limbs a bit.
"Yes, Dox, I left home to be free. And I'm glad I did. I had a full belly, mostly, and plenty of friends, until they were killed. Just like the Mawtooth can all be killed. No guarantees in life. Sure, if a fish monster went for Rasen again, I'd try to kill it. Not strong enough to kill all fish monsters, and some of them might be nice anyway. Eating rocks? Freedom doesn't have to mean being stupid or doing random things for no reason. You sound a little angry."
He begins looking around for Rasen's ventilation shaft. "But it's ok. I was angry when our ship got blown apart, I remember. Angry and scared."
After almost an hour looking around they finally finde, behind some thick bushes, an opening in the ground. A crack of about 10 feet wide and 15 feet long that descend into the darkness. It's easy enough for them to tie a rope to one of the nearby trees and start their descend. The question is, who is going to be first?
Mud peers down into the darkness curiously with his darkvision. Not quite as thrilled about exploring dark holes as new horizons, but it suffices.
"You going first, Navigator?" He glances at Rasen, unsure of his new crew's dynamics. "Otherwise, I will. What do you remember at the bottom?"
If it falls to him to descend as the scout, Mud happily ties off a rope to a nearby solid point (tree, boulder), murmurs a prayer to his oceanic deity. He closes his eyes for a moment and attempts to sense the presence of evil down there, or maybe undead (Divine Sense).
He of course listens closely to any discussion of what might be down there and what order the others will follow or any other ideas or concerns.
(It does not occur to him that he has just met these people and they might not follow him).
"We didn`t explore this part barely the beach near the river so I Have no idea wha'ts below. If you want me to go first I will need some light... and perhaps that would revieal our position sooner that we really wanted. And.. remember that for all that we know is that there is one missing person down there but the rest of the people could be just innocent miners and workes... so be... cautious"
"Rasen should be last. They need light to see, I don't. I probably see better in the dark than any of you, and I can be an OK scout too. I will go second." He thought on a bit more. "Actually, what is everyone's abilities? We should know what we are capable of. I can do magic, and my talents are tied to shadows - I can make basic illusions, I'm not bad at stealth and can even turn myself or others invisible, I can see in the dark - further than most others with such abilities - and I know how to pick locks."
Mud nods agreeably as he prepares to descend, and his eyes widen.
"A human who can see in the dark better than goblins? Sounds like magic! Some shadowy magic, maybe, like you said... did you say you can turn us invisible? Maybe now's the time, do it for me, and I give two pulls on the rope if the coast is clear. Or save it, your choice. As for me, I have a bit of divine magic and healing that Procan graces me with. Mostly, I use my cutlass. Warrior, but sneakier and quicker than most big armored thugs."
Grrzark gives Mud an appraising stare, comparing the thinner goblin to his own bulk and strength. "I'll go first," he says. "Mud thinks he's going to eat the giant frog, but it might go the other way around." Without waiting for an argument, he turns towards the forbidding crack in the ground. "Dox, I lost my backpack. Let me use your rope."
Phodoxia rolls her eyes and unstraps her bundle of rope from her pack. Slinging it around a nearby tree and knotting it off, she braces it around another tree for good measure and tosses the far end at Grrzark. "It's all yours, champ."
Grrzark takes the rope, ties the far end of it around his waist, and catching the near end by the edge of the crack, swings himself, battleaxe and all, down into the hole. He leans to peer downward as he slowly lets himself down hand over hand. (Perception: 19)
"Zark's good at losing things," Phodoxia says glibly in answer to Shadowheart's question. "But he's as tough and nasty as a nest of hornets when he gets mad, if hornets nested inside rocks anyway. And me, I'm good at everything you can think of, except for what Zark is good at."
While Grrzark is preparing to enter the hole, Stoney finds three smooth rocks that will fit comfortably in his hand. He taps two of them rhythmically with his tinker's tools, until they both start glowing (5' bright, another 5' dim) from his artificer's Magical Tinkering. After hearing Shadowheart say that he can see in the dark, Stoney drops the third rock. For the glowing rocks, one rock goes in his own pouch, the other he wraps in a cloth and hands to Rasen.
"The magic is only temporary, but will last for this mission. In case we need to see, and don't have a torch handy."
(Before Grrzark goes in, to the group.) "Do you want me to toss one of these glowing rocks into the hole? You'd be able to see how deep it is. But it would alert anything down there that we are coming."

Mud simply smiles and nods as Grrzark insists on heading down first. He retrieves his own rope and puts it back in his pack.
"That's a nice trick, Tark. Could be useful at sea too, come to think of it." He gives the gnome a genuine grin as he whispers. "I say we go in stealthy, though, and just have Rasen bring the light for himself as the last one down. But I'm new to the crew. You tell me."
He vaguely recalls a wizened old gnome who had been the ship's mage when he first joined the Dragonfly. Could have used him in that last battle, though against that warship and its cannons, it might have done as much good as a wooden anchor.
"I'll save the invisibility for when we need it. Shadowheart turns to Tark and nods in reply - he can't help but find the gnome a bit odd. There are times where Shadowheart just wonders how he survives seeming so inept and then there are times like this or when making magic items that he seems so very smart and wise.
"I'll go second," Shadowheart says, going after Grrzark.
Tugging on the rope to check it is secure first, if it is, he proceeds to climb down.

Mud looks curiously to see if any others wish to descend before him. If none seem to, he goes next, stowing his driftwood shield on his back.
In truth, while comfortable climbing around on a ship's rigging, he feels a little off descending so far into darkness on a single rope. Moreover, he finds his muscles are not fully recovered from his half-hour of running while chasing the deer after being adrift at sea for days, but he tries to make the best of it.

The unlikely party starts to descend towards the darkness.
The shaft is wet and full of moss. After descending almost 50 feet, Grazz, being the first suddenly grunts and says upward.
"There's a grate here... an iron grate... "
Shadowheart descends to join him and they both are standing in an iron grate that bars the access to a chamber below. Using his preternatural senses, the shadowtouched human sees that the chamber has almost 15 feet in height and there is a similar grate in the floor below. The one that they are standing now iss well kept, mortared into the ceiling and covered with grease to prevent riot. It doesn't seem to have any way to open it, although Graaz thinks that they can break it. But Phodoxia knows that's basically the universal Graaz's answer for almost everything he cannot eat.
With half the party still hanging from the rope, while Graaz and Shadowheart inspect the grate, the tension on his arms is too much for him to hold and he begins to fall, risking on drag the others with him.
The gnome falls, unable to stop his own falling, and Rasen tries to catch him, reaching with his left arm but he is unable to do that. Fortunately the gnome reacts in time.
Mud takes the bit of secondhand hardtack from Phodoxia, looks at it philosophically, then pops it in his mouth.

PbP Character: A few ;)
The gnome falls, unable to stop his own falling, and Rasen tries to catch him, reaching with his left arm but he is unable to do that. Fortunately the gnome reacts in time.
