Saltstryder Goliath. Barbarian. Inheritor. As a child Salty idolized her older sister Redwater. They trained together in the way of the blade. It was Redwater who would one day wield the matriarch’s great sword.
Years later Saltstryder joined a scouting party led by Cloudseeker a young warrior. Saltstryder received special attention as she and Cloudseeker were also together. Eventually their infatuation passed and soon to follow Salty was excluded from the scouts.
As Saltstryder contemplated her future she reunited with her sister. Redwater had changed she had married given birth to twins Goldreed and Clovendew. The matriarchs blade passed to Saltstryder. All that was left was for Saltstryder to journey while bonding with Wyrmtongue the blade of her Clan matriarch.
Lady Kitiara Harrowhark, first daughter of House Skye
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Bard
Background: Noble
Backstory:
Born into one of the four Half-Elven noble houses, who trace their lineage back to the first alliances of Elves and Men, Kitiara had but one purpose; to marry into one of the four houses and ensure the purity of the bloodlines into the next generation. It was a fate doubly ordained, if not by the birth order of her elder twin then definitively by her sex.
None of this seemed to deter the young Kitiara, who rebelled constantly against even the slightest of expectations. In fact, the only thing she seemed to enjoy more than frustrating her parents was besting her brother Airk. She would study harder, practice longer, and pay closer attention to all that he was expected to master as the first-born scion of House Skye.
It was never enough.
Eventually, Airk grew tired of the constant competition. Or more accurately, he got tired of losing. Kit never really understood why he withdrew, never understood that in her attempts to earn the approval of her parents had only served to cast their disapproval on him as well.
Jade Tanthalos wasn't of the four houses. She was the orphaned daughter of refugees, granted asylum because of her Half-Elven blood. Given a place in the stables; her hard-work, self-discipline, and devotion to duty quickly won the hearts of the Knights of Skye. And so, she came to the attention of Duke Harrowhark.
The Duke thought that Jade, one year younger in age but already much more mature in spirit, would be a good influence on Kitiara. He secretly arraigned for them to cross paths in the hopes that they would become acquaintances. When he learned that they had, he forbade Kitiara from spending any more time with "a lowly commoner" and thus ensured the cementing of their friendship.
On the day before the (arraigned) marriage of Lady Kitiara Harrowhark to the Lord Scion, Heir to the House of Flame; Duke Harrowhark granted perhaps the most remarkable dispensation in the history of his house. Jade Tanthalos, a commoner and a woman, would be permitted to train as a Knight Paladin of the House of Skye.
Kitiara came to her that night to tell her she was running away before the wedding, and to ask Jade to come with her. Refusing was the most difficult thing Jade had ever done but she hoped that her refusal would deter Kit.
She was wrong.
Kit has spent the better part of the past year in Balder's Gate, living in a seedy inn called the Boar & Lyre. The proprietor, a retired adventurer known as Pick, has taken a bit of a shine to the wayward gamine and does his best to keep her fed and out of trouble. For her part, Kit loves the ambiance. The Boar & Lyre is well known as a tavern that caters to the unusual needs of adventures and there are always new groups to meet and new stories to hear.
As the novelty of freedom has worn off, Kit has started to wonder if it isn't time to have an adventure of her own.
Background: Tavern Cook, Waitress, and Occasional Bouncer
Appearance: A plain woman with shoulder length black hair usually tied up in a bun or pony tail, Gafyra is most often behind the bar or in the kitchen, where she works these days as cook, scullery maid, and waitress at the tavern. Shes a formidible no nonsense woman who always seems to have her kitchen tools close at hand. Knives, rolling pins and a meat tenderizer hang from various spots on her body, and an dish towels seem to be wrapped around her neck and at her waist. She brokers no trouble from the men harrasing the women in the establishment, and rumor has it her dish towel is a wicked cloth with a mind of its own that has cut the flesh of many a over-exuberant young man. Shes certainly not above knocking a ruffian over the head with her rolling pin either! Shes used to getting her way when there is trouble to be settled, and has a keen eye for details that match her keen ear for lies.
Few people have ever bothered to know much about her history, but those who have compared notes over the years say she was raised in the countryside far from here. She was once married, and had a husband Marston who may have died in the war, as he hasnt been heard of in more than 5 years. Others say he is a prisoner of war held hostage, and that Gafyra saves every copper she ever made in hopes of raising a ransom. She married for love and well below her station, against the judgement of her parents Karlin and Tayora Estarion - sages who had trained her in all manner of things and had once hoped she would follow in the family business. She dotes on her customers and always tries to make time for those with a story to tell or a problem they need to unload.
Of late she is getting desperate, for she hasnt raised nearly enough money to bring about her husbands release. Adventuring might just be the way to finally bring him home.
Gnowee grew up in the deepwoods in the community known as Shadehollow, comprised of charcoal burners, trappers, slash and burn farmers and other outcasts. An eclectic hard scrabble settlement of leather tents and shallow caves most of its inhabitants were orcs and outcast deepgnomes with a smattering of humans and halflings. Gnowees father was apparently svirfneblin but she was raised by her mothers who were both orcs: Harla, a skilled hunter and herbalist, and Jui Yi the village tanner and furrier.
Gnowee spent most of her time in the woods either helping her mothers at their tasks or simply watching the surrounds for dangers of which the most common were other groups of outcasts and bandits mostly of the human or orc variety. Gnowee had many friends among the community...mostly older folks as her peers always considered her to be too serious and dour.
As the community absorbed others over the decades it became more stable and settled and began to expand underground opening up shallow tin mines for trade. Gnowee began spending more and more time away from home looking for the peace and calm of her youth but it always eluded her. She made sure that her mothers found other apprentices to assist them and told them that she would return once she had discovered what she was supposed to be doing. She attached herself to Holly Tincups next trading trip and left home at the ripe old age of 22.
Appearance: On the short side for a half orc her skin is slate-grey with slight olive hints about her shoulders and cheeks and her hair is cut short and silver-grey. Her face is broad and serious with grey-black eyes.
Born to a clan of smiths, Kharkahm spent his youth playing in his parents’ smithy. Too weak for the smith’s work, however, it was quickly clear that his younger brother Torheld would takeover the business even though Kharkahm was the eldest. His mother, who always had been the brain of the business, found him an apprenticeship as jeweler with one of her brother’s spouse’s family. She figured his intelligence and dexterity would benefit his career there and the easier access to noble metals, gems and jewels would certainly improve the smithy.
While initially sour that his own brother snagged Kharkahm’s birthright, the apprenticeship with his mentor Myrbelle Goldhold taught him that it was for the best. In the smithy, he had always suffered when he was called in for help. Everything was so heavy and he just couldn’t do many tasks that looked so easy for his father and brother. No, the jeweler’s work was so much easier, everything small and light and the only thing you needed was a calm and steady hand, and this he had. Additionally, he enjoyed that he could join his Myrbelle to go outside into the mountains foraging or to prospect new mines for gemstones. He learned so much during his years as an apprentice. Enough to open his own jewelry, with Torheld as primary client for armor and weapon decoration.
Barely a year ago in the high mountains, he followed a river canyon to search for new ore veins or veins bearing gemstone that the river had cut through, when a massive storm surprised him. At its first signs, he decided to return but could not leave the mountains in time before the tempest engulfed him fully. So much water poured from the heavens that he could barely see five feet ahead and he was forced to stop and weather the storm. In a moment of desperation he raised his shield to cover himself from the immense downpour and that was when — CRACK!!! — A lightning struck the dwarf. With smouldering hair and skin, he was unconscious before his body even hit the ground. A few days later, he woke in an air genasi temple of Akadi all covered in linen and feeling all numb, hardly able to move, and barely remembering who he was. He was told, how one of their clerics, Wheeze, who had performed a ritual during the storm, had found him dying in the mountains and brought him here to recover. Now after a year he had stayed with the Akadian temple, became an acolyte and, while his physical wounds have long healed, he still is slowly in the process to reclaim the memory of his previous life. Only, his eyes have changed into a light blue colour that occasional crackle with little static discharges.
Now, after one year, Arc Stormeyes, as he was called for the little arcs of lighting that had manifested in his eyes, had been called to start a customary ritual of going into the world to find themselves.
Would it be possible to play someone who is young. Like someone who's apprenticeship was cut short and now they have chosen a more dangerous path to make ends meet. Unproven and anxious, but determined. This adventure would be their coming of age story.
It sounds to me like that's exactly what they're looking for, a group of first-time adventurers just coming into their own as young adults. Can't wait to see what you come up with! Love that I'm seeing some familiar faces!
Backstory: Hanzo was born into a prominent Samurai family on the Island of Hanshu. Growing up, he was fascinated by the tales and stories of the world, of the adventures and sites seen. Where a warrior could prove themselves and earn honors for their family. He began his training at an early age, Rasaad the old monk who trained Hanzo spoke of many tales from a place called the Sword Coast.
Hanzo began in the service of the Matsudaiara, then Tokugawa Clan. He would earn the nickname Demon Hanzo because of the fearless tactics he displayed in his operations. At the age of 16, his first battle was a nighttime attack during the siege of Udo Castle. He now serves on the personal guard of the Tokugawa. During his time in court, Hanzo meets a wizard named Shandalar who speaks of a great city named Baldur's Gate.
Wanting to see the world for himself, when Lord Tokugawa asked for a volunteer to travel to the Sword Coast, to investigate on stories he has heard of great evil and report on it, Hanzo volunteered. He sailed and arrived at Candles Keep, where the Paladin Anjantis met him, and told him of what was occurring. Hanzo decided it was time to see for himself.
Sister Amaria Human (Variant) Paladin Urban Bounty Hunter Backstory:
Amaria never knew his parents. Her earliest memories are a blur, but from the time she was 5 she was making a living on the streets as a petty thief, focusing on using her looks and charms as a defenseless orphan to distract victims while her confederates robbed them blind. This all fell apart around 8 years old when she tried stealing from a shining knight who caught her tricks and wound up being "rescued" into adoption by the paladin. Lady Bellatrix Foeslayer, she was called and raised Amaria up to appreciate nobility and courage, but advised her not to forget her roots.
Her Teenage year were spent training with sword and prayer, unlocking the spark of the divine Bellatrix saw in her. She constantly snuck out to prowl the city on her own, forming a friendship and romance with Romand, a young man she knew from their youth who had not forgone the criminal life. Their relationship ended when Romand fled the city to avoid criminal punishment.
As Amaria nears adulthood, Bellatrix has left on an extended mission, and Amaria has setup herself as a catcher of criminals and ne'er-do-wells in the city. She often hangs around taverns trying to pick up on local rumors. She has a good working relationship with Sergeant Grimbar in the city guard, who tips her off to things as well.
Backstory: My name is Velia. My life has been anything but normal. As a child, I had sorceress powers since birth that my father never understood and my mother never encouraged. In fact, my mother was never around, and while my father worked, I spent time causing trouble and mischief all by myself. I grew up naughty, outcast, and filthy and being a half-breed I was despised by others.
When I became a young woman, I joined an adventuring team and spent years traveling the world and serving them like a tool. The day came that my father died and my mother returned, it was revealed to me by her that she never loved us, and my purpose for being born was part of some master plan to serve in the ranks of a higher, more cosmic purpose. I refused. Angry, frustrated, and alone, I left the adventuring team I was with and fled to another land where I remained hidden from divine eyes. It was there the second chapter of my life began - where I walked into a tavern, hoping to find new friends and new adventures - people who appreciated me for who I am.
This place has it's own set of issues and there's no time for being sad. I'm hoping to find work here, maybe meet a few new friends or possibly make a few more enemies, who knows.
Then I will come for you, Mother... and you will pay for what you did to father! Yes, Zarah, I WILL kill you!
The following 6 players have been chosen to start:
HunterOrien for the character Saltstryder groverbloom for the character Kit Harrowhark Hewj_Ogr for the character Gafyra Damian_May for the character Gnowee Aaggie for the character Hanzo Isacaar for the character Velia
consider this a session zero of sorts
I will now try to answer any questions you have, if I miss something don't panic just bring it up again until I catch it, I don't always scroll back to see edits, would much rather a new post to bring not only my attention to what's going on but everyone else's also.
For now you will be starting in the Forgotten Realms in case anyone wanted to add anything relevant to their backstory.
If anyone wants to know any of the other characters before we start there are 2 options I can think of (let me know if you think of others):
1. just say you know so and so (check with each other to make sure each is ok with this)
2. do a small rewrite of your backstory and add a brief paragraph expaining the how, where, when, and what not and such etc. (again, check with each other to make sure it's ok)
There will be an new thread used for the campaign and after an initial introductory post by me, each of you can introduce your characters in a post, even if you already know each other as there may be some who don't and maybe an occasional reader will be following the thread so it's also potentially for their benefit.
To anyone who didn't get chosen, if someone's character dies or the player has to abandon due to rl situations I will contact you at random to fill those positions if you still want to play later on.

Where in the Forgotten Realms will we start? And what year it be?
