For almost a hundred years, the land once known as the Shining South lay Scarred. A vast chasm was torn through the land by the magical cataclysm known as the Spellplague, sending countless tons of earth and stone, kingdoms and people, tumbling into the Underdark as the Underchasm was born. Access to fresh water was cut off for much of the South, as rivers were rerouted and consumed by the deep, and entire sections of seas swallowed. The Shaar Desolation, a massive desert where once stood verdant plains, was born. Those who had lived nomadic lifestyles among the grasslands were forced to adapt or die, the old ways quickly becoming untenable. The South, once a shining land of cultural wonder, became a bitter and hostile landscape, and for almost a hundred years it remained that way.
After the events of the Second Sundering, however, the Underchasm was entirely sealed, filled with elemental earth, the earthmotes that once floated above it fallen to the earth, and the world's geography was returned to what it was before the Spellplague. In a purely physical sense, that is. In reality, while rivers have cut their way back across the great Underscar, and life has started to return to the Shaar Desolation, it will be a long, long time before the blasted desert returns to what it once was. The injuries wrought upon the land have not fully healed yet, but they are beginning to scab. Now is a time of rebuilding, and revitalization. It is a time of rebirth. It is a time of change. For better, or for worse. There is no telling what will spring up in these new lands, but it is certain that there is no better time for heroes.
Hiya! I've had an idea for a campaign brewing in the back of my brain for years now, and I feel like I'm finally ready to make it a reality, and I came across the South as the perfect location to make it a reality. It's a location that hasn't really been touched on since 4e, and with the Second Sundering books mentioning that the Underchasm itself was filled completely up and sealed off and then never talking about it again, I figured that it would be a pretty notable thing to explore. So, here we are! I've provided a bit of info about the various areas that the campaign is going to be centered around or might interact with as parts of the South, but I would strongly advise you all to do your own delving into the location's history for building your characters and whatnot, it's such a fun little place. Well, big place. Quite big. Additionally, a lot of the campaign will take place within the Shaar Desolation itself and atop the place I've chosen to call the Underscar, which at the moment don't have any notable kingdoms, since the Second Sundering was so recent.
Places of the South:
(just kinda ignore the plaguewrought land, spellplague's all gone now I was just too lazy to edit it out)
East Rift: East Rift is a great kingdom situated within a rift in the earth, much smaller than the former Underchasm, but still quite sizeable. Unique among places in the Shaar Desolation, the lake inside East Rift was fed by elemental portals that did not close during the Spellplague, keeping the region mostly intact with the notable exception of their capital city being half-swallowed by the Underchasm. Their capital is Eartheart, a great city built into the sides of the East Rift.
Tymanther: A dragonborn kingdom, originally ripped from Toril's twin Abeir during the spellplague, now having formed their own kingdom in the South. They hold a deep hatred of dragons, and are currently engaged in a war with Unther.
Unther: A kingdom transported to Abeir during the Spellplague, and recently returned. They are ruled by their undying god-king Gilgeam, and are currently engaged in a war with Tymanther in an attempt to reclaim their lost lands.
Okoth: An ancient land populated by serpentine humanoids and ancient ruins. The empires which once reigned there have long since fallen to ruin, but there are still rumors of the serpentine creator race, the Sarrukh, dwelling within the ancient cities.
Dambrath: A hot plain home to many horse-riding, nomadic clans of humans, as well as several other smaller settlements, especially along the coast.
Elfharrow: For a long time, the elves of the arid land of Elfharrow were known as vicious, xenophobic isolationists. However, as the world heals and the dead woods begin to bloom for the first time in even many of the younger elves' lives, they have begun to open up a little more.
Halruaa: A land of wizardry thought to be destroyed by the Spellplague, it turns out that Halruaa was in fact only transported to Abeir, and returned at the end of the Second Sundering, albeit very much reduced in power, no longer the great Netheril-descended magocracy they once were.
Luiren: A halfling kingdom that was entirely submerged during the Spellplague, it has been slowly recovering as late, but not with any particular speed due to their fields being very much salted after a century of being underwater.
Permitted content for making characters:
Races: All races from the PHB or MotM are permitted, as well as Thri-Kreen and Loxodon, as both races are common in the South. Loxodon, however, are known as Loxo, and possess two trunks rather than one. Additionally, you may choose to play a centaur character as a Wemic instead, losing the equine build trait. Wemics are centaur-like people with the lower bodies of lions who dwell in the South.
If you wish to play a race from another sourcebook, UA, or a 3rd party, you must flavor it as something that would fit within the Forgotten Realms, and I reserve the right to veto.
Classes: All official classes/subclasses are permitted, and I am open to 3rd party/UA options, so long as you run them by me. Tasha's optional features are generally fine, but just mention which ones you're using, I might say no to one or another.
Backgrounds: Any background you want, but if you choose one that gives you a feat, no it doesn't. That's dumb. I hate those backgrounds. Just take that feat as a feat if you want it. I cannot overstate how much I despise those free feats.
If you're still interested, go ahead and fill out the following character application!
Ability Scores: 4d6, drop lowest, no rerolling 1s. If you don't like your first spread you can choose to roll again, but you're stuck with the second result. Low scores make good characters just as much as high scores.
Name/Pronouns:
Race/Class: You're starting at level 3!
Backstory: It's not a requirement, but if you do end up tying your backstory with the setting, I'll likely prioritize it if written well. You don't need to be from the South, but you do need to be from the Realms. If you would like your backstory to include secret/unconventional elements, PM me, I love that stuff. I do have a narrative I want to run, but it's relatively freeform and allows for integration of backstory shenanigans.
Physical Description: Image, text, or both.
Item: choose one uncommon magic item to start with! If you choose something unconventional and/or choose to tie it to your backstory, all the better!
raised as a bearer of a great weapon, passed down his people, is exiled after claiming a prophesy of his people is false. he is branded a slave and his skills as a fighter are used for evil. he is used by his master as an assassin, until he is sent to kill a monarch and is near death as a result of the king's guard. he is revived by a mysterious figure, who claims to be death herself. she offers to let him be her 'scythe', her killer of those she deems evil. he declines, refusing to let another person use him ever again. death is sympathetic with him, and gifts him a weapon, a pitch-black longsword in an unbreakable silver sheathe, so that he may have the strength to defeat those who may try to control him. he thinks if there is a god, he or she are playing a joke, for after all these years and all the things he's done, he still ended up the bearer of a great weapon.
he is a small human, 5'5" in stature, bald, wearing robes of white
can i pm you over an idea i have for his uncommon item?
Backstory: A street performer from Baldur's Gate ("Heapside, in the low city"), Kit is very far from home. While she's not a member of that organization ("No, I don't play the harp. Why do you ask?") she seems to be affiliated with them in some way. She's come south at the behest of her old friend, a Dwarf named Adoward, who's heard some curious rumors coming out of the Shaar and wants to have someone look into it ("off the books, of course"). Fortunately for him, Kit passed through this way about a year back...
(Will send a PM with some additional depth ASAP)
Physical Description:
Kit stands about 5'3"/1.6 meters tall with a slight build and short, choppy brown hair that just barely covers the tips of her slightly pointed ears. Her eyes are a startlingly clear blue and she has a somewhat androgynous look that is further accented by her penchant for wearing masculine clothing, which tends towards natural colors and rich, textured fabrics. During her downtime, she can usually be seen playing a thelarr crudely carved from a river reed or practicing sleight of hand tricks with her "lucky" copper coin.
Item: Narrowed it down to 53 😂 They will also in your PMs for discussion.
Backstory: Ah-ali-ama Freani-ghymn aka Olan fargrove is descended from one of the great houses of Myth Drannor. Following the destruction of Myth Drannor the house moved to Semberholme, and then finally to Deepingdale. These moves led to his parents becoming bitter about their fate and laying their woes at the feet of other races. Having grown amongst the other races in Deepingdale Olan had a different outlook and growing ever more restless decided to wander further afield away from the bitterness and prejudice. After decades of wandering he now finds himself in the south of Faerûn, looking for adventure and excitement.
When asked which house he belonged to, he avoids the question, stating that he does not wish to dwell on the past.
Backstory: We were born into service, wards of the state. Trained from a young age as peace officers, we are tasked in the pursuit and judgment of those who have proven themselves guilty. I have been tasked with the pursuit of a vicious highwayman, guilty of the killing of a Lord's retainer and his children. Rather than face his execution honorably, the coward has fled across oceans to skirt his fate, with me on his trail. I will find him, I will fight him and I will kill him, as judged by his betters before he fled.
Description: His armor rattles with each step, his banner rustling in the wind. Face obscured by the mask of a divine beast, he wears his armor as his badge of office. A great wooden club sits on his back and a wicked cross spear never leaves his hand. Behind the mask, two eyes shine with a burning determination. Though he is far from the tallest, his presence nevertheless towers over his enemies in a fearsome show of fury and dedication. When he speaks, his words are careful, eloquent, spoken with respect even to his enemies. He stands for the ideal of Justice through overwhelming strength. Those who are strong are obligated to defend the weak. Those who are strong and do not, prove themselves unworthy of power (Character Sheet for picture: https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/118220735)
Uncommon item: (Ring of Waterwalking) For his arduous journey West, his superiors have further granted him the means to pursue his quarry across even the widest of rivers and coldest of seas. But this gift comes with it's own warning. If he attempts to return without the condemned's head, his people's ships will not carry him and he will walk across the oceans in shame. Only if he reaches his homeland once more would he be permitted to die for his dishonor.
Backstory: Fa'ame was always a singular individual... Drawn as early as she can remember toward a fascination with decay, transfiguration and fertilization of fresh life. She saw, in the cycle, a natural magical force to rival the weave... A force she was obsessed with harnessing, even without any proper training or guidance... sometimes employing undesirable methods to achieve her goal. Her fixation marked her as an outsider from the beginning... but when her efforts started yielding real power, her people started to see her as a threat. Fa'ame's kithlord banished her to wander the realm in service to the clan, allowing her only occasional access to her people, once a year, to report on her exploits and share in the communal bloodletting. In the last few visits she was denied the chance to share pain with her kin. She was told by the kithlord that her family no longer acknowledged her kinship. That they wish her never to return. She hasn't known what to believe... However, whether or not her kithlord's claims are true, this year, in her travels across Faerûn, she's determined to find something priceless enough to leverage into a permanent homecoming.
Physical Description: (Will make and post a portrait) Slender and slight, white skin with eggplant-colored tint. Her bald head and face are covered with intricate tattoos which, on close inspection, are actually fungal growths cultivated by Fa'ame. Her haunted pale eyes are often wide or askew as she slips into a ponderous sort of inner delerium. Nevertheless, her strange face, both angular and round and perpetually filled with jarring expressions... can still exude warmth, empathy and genuine loving connection with the companions she meets.
Item: [magicItem]Coiling Grasp Tattoo[/magicItem] created by Fa'ame herself out of the magical fungal growths she cultivated and grafted onto her skin.

Question 1: Would Verdan from Acquisitions Incorporated be allowed? Their default lore is from Faerun. So I'm not sure if this would fall under content beyond the sourcebooks you listed you're okay with or if I should get a different idea.
Question 2: What kind of post frequency are you looking for? Wondering in terms of anywhere from multiple per day to a couple per week. (Just want to get an idea of what you'd expect.)

Name/Pronouns: Bombil (male)
Ability Scores (using from above): Probably use as (STR/DEX/CON/INT/WIS/CHAR) 7/12/16/10/12/16 with standard racial traits of +1 CON, +2 CHAR, (might swap a 12 and 16 between DEX and CON, but leaning towards CON as the higher)
Race/Class: Verdan, Sorcerer (Draconic Bloodline)
Backstory: General background idea tying in with Acolyte background. Basically started wandering, found a shrine/temple (would be curious if there's pantheons most relevant to your setting) and was drawn to helping others. He enjoyed hearing stories from people from far away and his mind was lit up with wonder at tales of Underchasm, wondering what lay beneath. At last, after some years, his wanderlust could be contained no longer and he sought permission to travel there both for adventure and to help those in need.
Overall his personality is meant to be rather warm and friendly. He's quick to want to greet others and see the best in them. Exchanging stories or music, even he's not the best musician, is a delight to him. The downside is that he tends not to suspect others unless they give him obvious reason to.
Physical Description: ~3ft tall (will have to figure out when lv 5 medium size happens), Green skin. Bald on the head, though with a patch of red scales from his draconic bloodline.
Item: [Tooltip Not Found] Possibly tie in to his acolyte background as being a broom that was used for sweeping around the shrine/temple and then found out "Whoa! This thing is awesome."

Verdan would work, since they fled from the Underdark they could have came up out of the Underchasm before it was sealed, and are now stuck up here. Post frequency, ideally once per day but I know things are going to slow down over time. As long as everyone is committed to posting with relative frequency I'm not picky.

Race/Class: Stoutheart Halfling- Pact of the Chain- The Fiend.
Backstory: Though her family originally hail from Luiren they now live in Hazuth. Always inquisitive she discovered a strange ruddy crystal while cataloguing for one of the Crinti noble families and tucked it away in her pocket after she heard it call her name. Her family think she has a secret girlfriend that she refuses to introduce to them from the way she talks about Maegara none of them suspect she is the secret voice that whispers from the crystal in Selias dreams and daydreams. Selia has made good use of the things Maegara has taught her hiring herself out as a translator, scribe and part time investigator.
She adores the flying fox that Maegara has gifted her though on occasion she swears that Tamanu has an all too humanoid expression on her face....and sometimes disappears entirely. ( Quasit)
Physical Description: Selia is a solidly built young woman with braided hair and dark brown skin with a wide smile and gap toothed grin. She dresses mostly in embroidered leathers and polished wooden jewellry.

This is a signature. It was a simple signature. But it has been upgraded.

Verdan would work, since they fled from the Underdark they could have came up out of the Underchasm before it was sealed, and are now stuck up here. Post frequency, ideally once per day but I know things are going to slow down over time. As long as everyone is committed to posting with relative frequency I'm not picky.
