Winter is coiling its claws around the tiny settlement of Phandalin. Nestled in the foothills of the Sword Mountains, this community has seen more than its share of trials. Now, though, its survival is threatened by a new danger: the White Dragon, Cryovain. Only recently, this dragon appeared in the skies over the town, declaring everything from the Sword Mountains to the southern reaches of the Neverwinter Wood to be her domain. She has begun raiding wagons and small settlements, and her depredations have driven other dangers out from their holes as they flee before her... Orcs, Manticores and even smaller, weaker Dragons. Phandalin is in need of heroes to stand up and confront this menace from the mountains....
Greetings. We are looking for 1 player to add to our ongoing campaign.
This game has been a hodgepodge of story elements from the Lost Mines of Phandelver campaign and the Dragon of Icespire Peak campaign, with a little original material sprinkled in. At risk of some mild spoilers, the party has already liberated Phandalin from the grip of a squad of mercenaries, rescued a dwarf entrepreneur from the clutches of goblins, and had a fleeting encounter with a young green dragon. They are returning to Phandalin and there hope to recruit another adventurer to aid them in their quest to put an end to the white devil, Cryovain.
The current party makeup is as follows:
Leonin Barbarian
Elven Echo Knight
Dwarven Druid
I'll select an applicant based on my own flawed and inscrutable criteria, so don't obsess over filling just the right gap in the party composition. Submit a character you think would be fun for this campaign.
Application
Please submit the following:
Name
Race
Class (PC will join the campaign at level 4)
Stats (standard array or point buy)
Background
1 paragraph worth of PC backstory
1 paragraph explaining what brings the PC to Phandalin at this dark hour?

I'll use this post as a placeholder while I make a character, but I have one question:
Where is the game being held? will it be on the forums, pms, or something else?
also, what is the level of optimisation in the game? will it be very tactical where I need to plan every build decision to perfection? or can I build some really freaky multiclass that is not optimal in the slightest but fun for story and RP?

Hi, I'm Raccoon_Master,The Rocket Raccoon/Trashcan Tactician (as appointed by Drummer). Pronouns They/Them/Theirs.
My Characters: Brorminthe Crusher; Discoverythe Keeper; Theathe Scoundrel; Jorvirthe Weaver; Threlan,the Speaker; Zolyathe Inspired; Penley the Devourer;
Backstory: Tendilius was always a studious lad, diving into books and learning history. It was a delight to seek out new knowledge, historical and magical. He was fascinated by legends and rumors, always wanting to go farther. And as a scholar he had an ingrained desire to make a name for himself by finding information, whether it be old or history in the making. But adventuring for such knowledge comes with some dangers so he learned magic, hence being a warlock, to help keep himself safe in his travels. At all times he keeps a treasured tome with him to write down and draw what he finds, hoping to make it a valued source of knowledge in the future and a claim to fame.
Reason for Coming to Phandalin: For a long time he had heard about the fabled Forge of Spells and yearned to be able to seek it out. But there was no realistic chance of doing so alone. So after hearing news that some folks had sent the mercenaries running, he leapt to the opportunity. It would be an exciting quest for knowledge (and treasure) to be able to explore his interests and even helps some along the way. Could even make for a nice book when all is said and done.
1 paragraph worth of PC backstory: He was conceived of **** and abused by his elven mother, as well as her clan for the majority of his childhood. He left and found fortune in the many Mercenary bands that peruse the various human cities, quickly gaining a violent reputation and eventually earning the rank of Lieutenant in the Blackheart Company, an organization based in a fortress near Daggerford. He carries a chip on his shoulder for his past abuse, but finds mercenary work to be a decent outlet for it and a fair channel for his bloodline's inherent bloodlust.
1 paragraph explaining what brings the PC to Phandalin at this dark hour? He's been hired to rid a village of a rival mercenary band. Seeing as his job has been completed for him and he's still being paid, he may feel obligated to accompany those who completed his job for him, offering his services gratis. Besides, he muses, I hear dragon tastes good.
The game is played here on the forums.
I don’t think I would be offending the other players to say it’s not optimized. I think everyone takes it seriously enough but no one is going to yell at you if you pull the D&D equivalent of not splitting your 10’s at a blackjack table.
I do try to provide maps with grids when possible, so builds that rely on movement and spacing should be in play.

1 paragraph worth of PC backstory: Aranea Kendrick is an Investigator with the Neverwinter Wintershield Watchmen. Born to loving parents--her father was a merchant and her mother a tailor--Aranea had a remarkably happy and carefree childhood. Her childhood ended the day thugs decided to rob her father's shop. Her father, never one to back down from a challenge, tried to fight the brigands off but was killed in the process. From that day on, Aranea swore to get revenge on the men who committed the vile act, and so she joined the Watch as soon as she came of age. One of her first acts as part of the Watch was to re-open the case of her father's murder. Frustrated by her lack of progress in finding the men, however, Aranea prayed for assistance from the gods, but it wasn't the gods who answered her prayers. With her newfound powers, Aranea was able to track the men down and exact her revenge. Now she lives to get justice for others.
1 paragraph explaining what brings the PC to Phandalin at this dark hour?: Word of a white dragon threatening the frontier town of Phandalin has reached as far as Neverwinter. When Aranea first heard the news, she begged for leave to investigate the menace. As one of the Watch's top investigators, her supervisor allowed her the latitude to take on her own cases as she chooses, and so he gave leave for her to travel to Phandalin. Specifically, the Wintershield Watchmen have dispatched her to assess the threat level and whether Neverwinter needs to take the necessary defensive precautions against possible dragon attacks.
brief description: he roams the earth, finally with control over his life. in his earlier years, he trained fanatically with the blade, only to be forced from his homeland for falsifying a prophecy. his family was killed and he is sold as a slave, obeying the whims of whoever has a contract of ownership over him, as per his punishment by the elders. eventually his mind shatters and he runs away, coming close to death. a mysterious figure gifts him a pitch black sword, sheathed in an indestructible metal, and is told only to unsheathe the sword in the gravest of danger. he is nursed back to health, but his brush with death leaves a whisp like silhouette trail behind him. now he seeks nothing other than a life of experiences on his own terms. he often chats to his sword, an action most attribute to his seeming madness, however he remains convinced the sword is sentient and has given it a name. night blood.
what brought him to phandalin at this dark hour? he seeks a life of experiences he chooses, as he has the option of choice for the first time since being revived and freed of slavery. he heard of the terror of the great white dragon in phandalin and whilst having no vengeance in his heart, despite now seeing the world through peaceful eyes, he is willing to betray his world view to free those from the experiences of violence. and if he has to kill a dragon to do it? so be it.
he is a pale skinned, bald human in his mid 20s, only about 5 ft 3 tall. he has haunted eyes and wears a cloak of white, with a black longsword, sheathed in silver metal at his side, amid various other weapons
Class (PC will join the campaign at level 4): Wizard, probably evoker or war mage
Stats (standard array): st 14, dx 14, cn 12, in 17, ws 8, ch 10
Background: sage
1 paragraph worth of PC backstory: At 6’7”, Astrid was the runt of her clan. Her three older brothers were the champions of the tribe, each one a powerful warrior. Astrid was expected to follow in their footsteps, but with her puny size she was all but forgotten by her clan. She had a natural intelligence, however, so she focused herself on studying arcane texts and learning as much as she could about the mystical arts. She befriended a retired wizard in a nearby town. He’d wanted to retire and open a tea shop. But he saw potential in Astrid and so trained her. When she was ready, she set out to write her own saga, using the talents she’d been given.
1 paragraph explaining what brings the PC to Phandalin at this dark hour? Astrid has a lot to prove - to herself and to her clan. What better way, she thought, than to defeat a dragon. Stories would be sung about her glory and she would be able to return to her clan and stand beside her brothers in the honor of her clan.

Class (PC will join the campaign at level 4): Artificer (alchemist)

Background: Charlatan
1 paragraph worth of PC backstory: "Mountebank [moun-tuh-bangk] noun 1. A person who sells quack medicines, as from a platform in public places, attracting and influencing an audience by tricks, storytelling, etc." When Jetzoilsee read that in the strange and tattered book his tribe found in that scary cave near the borders of the Lurkwood, it sparked something in him. He knew what path he wanted to follow. But he wouldn't go so far as to call his remedies quack, exactly. More like ... mmmm ... jejune. Speculative. Experimental even. But hey ... he worked hard on them, and he was sure they're just as magical as anything the alchemists' guild could brew up. He just needed to iron out a few minor wrinkles, is all. ... The army captain was very nice about it. The soldiers who had bought his syphilis cure were going to be okay, after all, aside from the time it would take them to recover the third of their bodily fluids they lost through the projectile vomiting and diarrhea. But he made it quite clear that Jetzoilsee was going to enlist, and he was going to be properly trained. He was sure the poor fellow was just having a bad day and didn't really mean that last part about, "...for the three thousand millenia or so it's gonna take to make you only a MINOR threat to the continued existence of the multiverse!" He's been in several armies since then, and is on his way to Neverwinter where he hears all the best mercenary companies recruit
1 paragraph explaining what brings the PC to Phandalin at this dark hour?: Well, Mablugiyet's burning piss, if one of his concoctions gives these brave heroes the strength to actually kill a WHITE DRAGON, no mercenary company in Toril could refuse to take him in. These folks might even wind up forming one of their own, and then he could ask to join up with them!
The military organization has laws. When those laws are broken, someone has to hunt down criminals and every one of them is a trained killer - but even the army has problems normal military police can not or will not solve. That’s where Special Investigator Sekolath came in. Whether it was a senior officer on the take, a special forces deserter, or a thief selling stolen military-grade weapons to organized crime made no difference to him- his passion was the hunt. He spent so much time deep undercover he barely remembered his name and had lost all family and friends when it came time to retire. He used to be the best - now who was he without a badge, without a Hunt?
1 paragraph explaining what brings the PC to Phandalin at this dark hour?
The hunt is afoot! Adventurers from across the land have heard of Cryovain’s dominion and the devastation it has wrought. The lesser prey will serve as a test and training for the larger prey: Cryovain itself! But Sekolath can’t do this alone - he needs a team. Now if only he could learn to trust and earn their trust in return.

Old school AD&D player, now learning to be a better DM dad
1 paragraph worth of PC backstory:Visskith was the child of one of the mages of his kingdom, which lay far to the south. Visskith followed in his parents footsteps, becoming a bodyguard for an important noble in his kingdom. A method the bodyguards employed was to cast disguise self to look like their masters, so they would confuse attackers. One day, Visskith was traveling to an important event with the rest of the bodyguards and the noble, when they were beset upon by “heroes” intending to capture the Yuan-ti noble. Instead, they captured Visskith, and took them north on a ship, all the way to Luskan. When they found out Visskith wasn’t who they were looking for, they tossed him out into the streets of Luskan. For the next few years, Visskith learned to hide from the shadows, taking what is necessary when it is necessary. Finally, Visskith earned enough money by stealing to book passage on a ship headed south. When the captain of the ship found out Visskith was a yuan-ti, they threw them out.
1 paragraph explaining what brings the PC to Phandalin at this dark hour? After Visskith was thrown out of ship, they headed inland, until they came upon the small town of Phandalin. They hate it in Phandalin and want to get out, but the villagers aren’t exactly rolling in money, so Visskith has turned to Mercenary work to earn coin. They seek a high paying job so they can get home.
Backstory: Rhys was a gambler in a past life and a good one at that. His natural talents with insight and deceit helped him win at cards. That skill bolstered with his youthful pride and ignorance often led him to some more unsavory parts of Waterdeep, playing against people many wouldn't dare look in the eye. But if there was one thing Rhys detested most, it was loosing and despite his natural talents, he would sometimes resort to cheating to win. One fateful game, Rhys cheated a hand against someone you should never cheat. He was caught and a dagger was driven straight through Rhys's heart. As he lay there, on the very brink of death, Rhys was visited by a Celestial being who offered his life in exchange for service. Unable to refuse, Rhys accepted and now finds himself, albeit reluctantly, as an agent for this Celestial doing her work in fighting for those who cannot fight for themselves.
Reason for travel: Rhys' would have been brought here by his celestial patron who would've heard about the dragon and wants to stop it
