"Ah yes, the noble House West. I heard they married into a family of famous hobbit halfling attorneys, wasn't it so?" Renaer shares.
Adrasteia suggests the western path. Sim has a hunch the northern path is the way to go. Mokiakia seems more certain than her companions when suggesting the eastern path.
LORE BOX (THE CITY'S SPLENDORS: THE GRIFFON CAVALRY - PART 2 OF 2 AS WRITTEN BY VOLO)
Riders of the Griffon Cavalry are trained to stay above the rooftops, not because they fear crashing into towers and weather vanes, but because the smell of so much horseflesh in the streets below can sometimes drive their griffons into a frenzy.
Side Note: You may remember from our in-person game that Sir Sildar Hallwinter, the knight you saved from the goblins, was a member of this very same Griffon Cavalry!
My gut feeling was so strong that I started walking east while my companions were deliberating; still I am quiet and as cautious as a slithering snake. Stealth8

Mokiakia is a bit farther ahead from the group now, down the east passage. Although she believes she is being quiet, her companions can hear her steps from back where they are. Soon enough, she manages to relocate the track of yellow markings leading deeper and deeper into the sewers and the party catches up to her.
After an hour of following signs through the tunnels, you come to a three-way intersection where a ladder leads up into a stone shaft capped by a circular metal cover. One of the familiar chalk symbols is marked on a wall nearby, and floating near the symbol is a spherical, grapefruit-sized creature with a bulging central eye and four stumpy eyestalks. It bares its teeth at you.

Adrasteia takes the lead and imposes her figure. (Gazer's CHA saving throw: 3). The creature looks undeterred by Adrasteia's display of courage.
Renaer rushes forward and tries to grapple the floating creature with his bare hands:
-> Renaer's athletics check: 18 vs. Gazer's acrobatics check: 19 - he is successful, despite looking quite clumsy while doing it. He then shouts: "This vile creature is now grappled. It won't be able to escape. Hit it with all you have!"

Sim tries to shoot the Gazer but she too misses her ranged attack.
The monsters then focuses two of its eye-stalks. The third eye-stalk from the left looks down at Renaer, turning icy blue before shooting a downward ray of the same color:
-> Renaer's DEX saving throw vs. Frost Ray {DC 12}: 12 - Renaer manages to move the grappled Gazer out of the way just enough that the ray misses his feet just barely.
The first eye-stalk from the left then turns a pastel shade of pink, aiming at Adrasteia:
-> Adrasteia WIS saving throw vs. Dazing Ray {DC 12}: 24 - The cleric's steely mind negates whatever effect the creature intended to confuse her with.
The creature seems frustrated its attacks were not effective at all.
Adrasteia steps forward and attempts to hit the grapefruit-sized creature, but it weaves out of the way. Renaer, still with the creature grappled in his hands, then brings it closer to the group and tries to bash it against the wall.
-> Bash against the wall: Attack: 26 Damage: 9 bludgeoning.
(@All: Except Renaer who gets a critical hit... go figure...)
The creature's face meets the wall with furious speed. It looks very damaged, covered in thick, red blood everywhere (Gazer - CMD: 9).
Sim and Mokiakia look at each other and share a simultaneous nod. The former lets out an arrow, the latter a bolt. The arrow hits right in the center eye and Renaer feels the creature's push against his palms fade (Gazer - CMD: 17 -> DEFEATED).
As combat comes to an end, the group is faced with another choice: left passageway, right passageway, or up the ladder?
"My friends, I assure you I am a more capable warrior than the last engagement would reveal. I will do better in the future. I also defer to Mokiakia as to which direction we should go."

Since the monster was near the last marking, I say we go that way. It seems that would be the left passageway. However, to make sure I venture to run an investigation check 21

Griffon Cavalry on Patrol
Based on the gut feeling of Mokiakia, I vote that we head to the east.
ROLLING FOR INITIATIVE:
THREE-WAY INTERSECTION MAP:
(Adrasteia is up first.)
I move to the front of our party and move to grid AY, 20. I want to run an Intimidation check as I get into a fighting posture. 4
(Sim and Mokiakia are up next.)
I use Chill Touch cantrip on the creature Attack: 8 Damage: 8
Mokiakia launches a Chill Touch spell towards the floating-yet-grabbed creature but her aim is a bit off after a long trek down the sewers.
(Sim's turn is still up.)
I draw an arrow from my hip quiver and shoot at the creepy eye creature 11, damage: 9

-> Adrasteia WIS saving throw vs. Dazing Ray {DC 12}: 24 - The cleric's steely mind negates whatever effect the creature intended to confuse her with.
The creature seems frustrated its attacks were not effective at all.
END OF INITIATIVE ROUND 1
THREE-WAY INTERSECTION MAP:
(Adrasteia is up next.)
Incredibly frustrated that I was unable to intimidate the creature, I attempt to swing my mace right in its gob. 13
Damage: 7
(@All: Everyone is missing their attacks!)
(Sim and Mokiakia are up next.)
I load, aim and fire my crossbow at the creature Attack: 11 Damage: 4
I send another arrow to chase Mokiakia's: 18 damamge: 8
Sim and Mokiakia look at each other and share a simultaneous nod. The former lets out an arrow, the latter a bolt. The arrow hits right in the center eye and Renaer feels the creature's push against his palms fade (Gazer - CMD: 17 -> DEFEATED).
As combat comes to an end, the group is faced with another choice: left passageway, right passageway, or up the ladder?
YOU ARE NOW OUT OF INITIATIVE. DO AS YOU WILL.
"You seemed to have the right instinct before," I say to Mokiakia. "What do you think?"
"My friends, I assure you I am a more capable warrior than the last engagement would reveal. I will do better in the future. I also defer to Mokiakia as to which direction we should go."
