Erric pulls it out of the water and asks for help laying it out, keeping a clamp down on where the wet part of the rope starts and trying to measure the depth.
Jambiya watches the depth sounding operation. "I'm small, so I could probably fit in some small places, but I don't think I can hold my breath very long. I never did well at those games where you stick your head in a barrel of ale. Maybe with Erric's air-skins?" She will take the air-filled waterskin he gave her, and practice breathing from it, dipping her head into the water.

(@DDP: Did Maldorn gather anything from my last post?)
Assuming he didn't, Maldorn follows his friends into the boat and continues to follow Erric's good instructions. He looks closely for any remaining signs of the crew or those who picked this boat clean.
.......tracks or evidence of Flindbar and his gnolls remain here? Seems like it's been picked clean, so anything we find will be found by surmounting some big danger that scared off the previous scavengers......
Maldorn, you do not detect any dangers. Sagitta doesn't appear to be worried about anything, either.
Erric borrows Anafrey's rope and he, Anafrey and Jambiya head back up on deck to test the depth of the water. They congregate as close to the water's edge as possible on the lower side of the wreck (the ship is tilted slightly to port), and Erric lowers the makeshift depth finder. There are a couple times when he thinks he has touched bottom when the rope would slowly start sinking again, indicating it was catching on some submerged rocks before sliding off again. (There are lots of rocks sticking out of the water all along the southern coast of the island, remember.) When he finally feels like he's reached bottom, Erric hoists the rope up again and the trio measures the depth at approximately 34 feet.
The group including Maldorn then goes back below deck to rejoin Ebokk, who is still searching through the mess for any clues. When asked if he's found anything, he replies, "Not yet," in a hopeful sort of way. Maldorn looks for any tracks, evidence, or signs of danger. It looks to him like the place was ransacked, but he doesn't find any signs of a fight. It is his estimation that the ship wrecked, and those aboard took everything they could and left. Whether they went to the island or somewhere else, he has no idea. Jambiya begins trying out the makeshift air bladder. She finds that she can use it to breathe underwater. She puts the mouth of the waterskin in her mouth and sticks her head below the surface. Before long, she begins to feel light headed and a little disoriented. She tries a few times and gets differing results.
OOC: As this is an extremely creative approach (in my opinion, at least), I can't find anything online for using a waterskin full of air to breathe underwater. I did find that in 3.5, you could have an air bladder, which would allow a character to breathe underwater for an additional minute. I'm going to say that at the beginning of makeshift air bladder use, the player will roll 1d10 to determine how many "rounds" (6–60 seconds) of air the player can get out of the bladder. Actually, I will roll that in secret, because the player would have no idea how much air they're getting out of it.
Jambiya splutters a little bit, and sits up, dripping water from her short green hair. "I think that might work!" she says brightly between coughs. She finds out what Maldorn has determined, and says, "That's great work Maldorn. So, it seems like we should search the island for survivors, or at least for more clues. It has been a while since this ship wrecked."

"Jambiya you're probably right that it's left the wreck, but while we're here, we might as well look around a bit more. Maybe underwater?" Erric says. "And maybe we could try inflating the air bladders just by pulling them open from being flat and empty... so that the air we're trying to breathe is as fresh as we can make it. But I'm guessing it won't work for long, and would just be a way to look around longer. Let's do our best to slowly look around underwater within the ship, and if there's anything that looks promising, Gill can go do some simple searching and retrieve things for us back here. If there is something you see that you'd like to look at, tell me, and I'll ask him to get it."
Erric does his best to wade into the water slowly, tightly gripping his air bladder. As he gets in to about his ribcage, he will grab onto his courage and put his face in the water, looking around. He comes back up and suggests they set up torches to see better. If he sees something interesting, he'll direct Gill to gently grab it and start to bring it onto the dry part of the deck. He's looking for of course a beard ring, but also containers or anything metal. He's not using his air bladder to breathe yet, just keeping his face in, eyes open, for up to 10 seconds at a time. He's totally forgotten about the breathing thing. And if when the torches get closer, he can see from the air into the water, he'll direct Gill to do the same retrieval.
Jambiya is encouraged (inspired!) by Erric's courage, and she goes swimming inside the wreck, too, using the air-skin, and her dark vision, to examine what she can. She's not down long, just a few minutes, as she's not sure about her use of the air-skins yet (1 minute for Con, and another 2 planned for air-skin use).

The angle of the boat does not really allow anyone to walk in the water and put their face into the water. It is really canted. You can take make a couple steps before your head is below the surface, but that's it. I really should be having you all roll for acrobatics because of the extreme incline, but I'm not feeling that hard nosed. Suffice it to say, if you're getting in the water, you're getting in the water and swimming.
OK, about 20 feet past where the water starts is where the hole is. It is not quite center — more on the starboard side. Upon closer inspection, it's a fairly good sized hole that was clearly broken in, not made by hand. It doesn't take a lot of imagination to suppose the ship ran into one of the large rocks along the coast, and that's what did her in. Perhaps it's that rock that is now holding the ship up and not letting her sink.
Beyond the hole, Jambiya can see all the way to the bottom. She can make out rocks of varying size everywhere. There are other dark shapes as well, but she isn't sure from this distance what they might be.
(OOC: Ah I just assumed it was at like at most a 20% angle and we could walk around without too much difficulty. If it's really steep, Erric would have suggested adding a few rope lines tied to the stern that people could hold onto as they searched and looked into the water. So maybe that's the retcon, and he and Jambiya poking their faces in at first to look around involved holding onto the ends of the ropes?)
Erric would eventually screw his courage to the sticking place after seeing Jambiya effortlessly swim around. Leaving his bag etc securely on the dry side of the ship to protect his instruments, plus his armor and a layer of clothes, he would lower himself into the water and grab onto his air bladder, trying to get a better look at the dark shapes Jambiya mentioned, asking that the torches be held closer to them. He'll direct Gill to swim down closer to one of them and bring back up anything smaller.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Maldorn follows along with the goblin and halfling, but does not make it into the water just yet. He pulls out the torch he brought and asks Jambiya to kindly light it up. Once that's done, he follows Erric's instructions on where to aim the torch's light in a way to be most helpful to the bard. If he catches a glimpse of the dark shapes Jambiya has mentioned, he'll venture a guess at what might they be:
OOC: I had said the ship was at a 35–45 degree angle. Ropes retroactively tied.
Erric, you swim down to the hole, but from inside the boat, you can't see as far as Jambiya; it's too dark. You'd have to swim through the hole and deeper to see what she's described. Maldorn, this applies to you as well.
OOC2: I'm confused about the torches you mention, Erric. Any torch being put underwater will go out immediately. Clarify this and then what, exactly, Gill has been directed to do.
OOC: Yes I'm also confident that holding a torch underwater would be ineffective :) What Erric was asking was for the people still above the water to hold the torches right above the water so the light could illuminate more of the underwater portion of the wreck Erric and Jambiya are swimming in. Like an aquarium light illuminating what is in an aquarium. Erric won't go down more than 5-10 feet, he just doesn't have that courage. But he'd try to use Gill to be an extension of himself underwater to grab anything interesting.
Anafrey would light two torches and hold one in each hand just above the water, trying his best to cast some light down into the dark water. "Does this help at all down there?" She would shout towards her friends below.
The water is just as clear here, though the ship is casting a shadow, which is making it darker. This, at least, is your perception after looking over the side as you were lowering your makeshift depth finder. And, no, while the hole is more starboard than port, it is still very much on the bottom of the boat. The only way you'd be able to see it when outside the boat would be if you were under the boat. Or at least deeper than the boat.
Anafrey, you wave the torches above the water. While they make it much more difficult for those of you above the water to see into the water (because of the reflections), it does cast more light below the surface when individuals' eyes are below the surface. Unfortunately, because of the distance, the angle keeps the torch light from helping Erric see deeper through the hole.
"Anyone want to try swimming down to look at what's on the other side of that hole we saw, either from inside the wreck or from outside the hull?" Erric says, with a sigh. "It doesn't seem like there's anything left on the wreck."
(OOC: If we just kept rolling investigation and perception checks repeatedly, would it make a difference to the results? Assuming the first attempt is everything but if there's functionally a better way to keep looking with a chance to find something well-hidden, Erric would probably do that.)
He begins to lay out some of his wet gear and clothes on the deck to try to dry them, then thinks better of it, and has Gill do it. "Well I honestly thought that we'd have found something by now, or have been attacked by a haunted mainsail or something. Are we done on the ship and headed to the island? Before we leave the wreck, anyone have any brilliant ideas? Dumb ones? I cornered the market on those I guess. Ebokk, you've been researching this ship and your dad's experiences for a while, what do you think of it all? Any theories or guesses?"
Seeing Erric step out of the water empty-handed, Maldorn says: "No further ideas from me. I think it is time we head back to that beach and then further inland. Let us hope there will be no welcoming party this time."
Maldorn then steps out onto the deck once again and verifies that their rowboat is where they left it. He also puts out the torch he had lit with Jambiya's help, saving it in case they need it later. He then puts on an apologetic facial expression: "If it is not too much to ask, on our way to the island, can we make a quick stop by our own ship. I thought we would have spent more time underwater and left behind some of my gear. As it turns out, I didn't even get wet..."
"Let me see how deep I can get," Jambiya says, before the group packs it in. She will climb over the side of the ship where the hole is most (so, starboard), and gingerly get into the water. Then, she will, with an air-skin, attempt to get down to where the hole is and see what she can see.
