Holding the book that he took, Laza walks into the office and says "I also took this as a distraction... anyone wanna check it... MY GOD!!!" as he sees the chaos of his teammates suddenly in chaos.
As Brayton charges at Erik to try and shut the book Rothnar tries to tackle Brayton but Brayton knocks him aside and makes it to Erik. Erik's muscles are tense and his body is fighting your attempts to pull the book away. Erik will contest your athletics roll: 12. Try as you might, Brayton is unable to pry away the book from Erik, as thought the wizard is possessed by some otherworldly force.
Erik:
You feel the force press deeper into your mind, clawing at your faculties. You feel as though you're dying. As though your mind and your soul is being consumed. Permanently reduce your wisdom score by 1 point. You rally what little you have left to resist: 9. It's not enough. The force is still pushing into your mind, trying to consume you.
Everyone else, you see Erik gripping the book tightly. He's staring intently at the book, even as his eyes are getting weaker. A streak running along the side of his head turns white.
((You have another opportunity to try to intervene if you wish))
Ruhvon sits in the corner watching with delight. "Oh my! Someone else who wishes to experiment with the cycle of life." Hearing Brayton's plea he sighs and snatches the dwarf's new hat off his head. He pulls it down over the face over the wizard. "Well, how about that... That hat did come in useful after all."
Trying to recover his dignity Rothnar stands and realizes that he could be bothering the druid and Brayton more than helping, so he keeps one step behind, with his hand holding the hilt of one of his daggers.
( Ready an action. In case Erik is still looking at the book after Brayton's and Ruhvon's efforts, he will try to knock him out. Will attack with the hilt of his dagger on the base of the skull for non-lethal damage:
Attack: 21 Damage: 8 ( in case he has advantage: 8 )
Brayton will go into a rage and again try to close the book. “Someone cover his eyes!”
Athletics: 17
Erik's body again resists your attempts to pull the book out of his hands: 17 The wizard's strength suddenly fails and Brayton is able to pull the book out of Erik's hands and slam it shut. You hastily fasten the clasp as Erik falls limply to the floor.
At that moment Pike bursts into the office clutching a wicked-looking dagger. "What the hell is going on in here?!" He looks at the book in Brayton's hands and Erik on the floor. "You opened the damned book, didn't you?"
Erik stirs. For Erik:
As you regain consciousness you find yourself lying on the floor of Pike's office. Your head pounds. It sounds like someone's shouting. You feel... different. You feel lesser after your brush with the Well of Souls. But it's also left something of itself in you. You feel knowledge flowing through your brain that you have never learned. Your proficiency with arcana is upgraded to an expertise and you gain the ability to speak abyssal. But you also feel weakened from the encounter in a way that will never truly heal. Permanently reduce your constitution score by 1.
You feel the power of the book still. Its hunger. Its desires. It's full of very powerful magic and very dangerous to the unprepared. No wonder it was locked away. It didn't feel evil. Just full of need. You'll never forget the book and feel a connection to it you can't explain.
“Well I closed it if we are going to be perfectly honest. This one here opened it and lost his wits.” Brayton says as he takes his hat back and putting it back in revealing the dazed face of Erik. Going back to his seat and plopping back down again.
Ruhvon tosses the hat back to Brayton as the druid's assistance in the matter was not needed. He pokes the (unconscious?) wizard lying on the floor with his staff to check for signs of life. Looking somewhat disappointed, he turns to their employer,"This night has been all about unnecessary risks it appears."He slumps into a seat. "It's good that this one waited until we were safe at least,"he gives nod towards Erik.
Brayton comes over and sits Erik up. Helping him open the waterskin and take a drink, before splashing some more on his face. Brayton will set up Erik to be sitting in a chair.
"I cannot believe you would do something so completely idiotic! You steal a dangerous magical artifact from the secure vault of a university full of wizards who have decided it's too dangerous to study. A magical artifact you've been explicitly told is safe so long as you don't read it. You bring it to my office and just have a browse! You could have unleashed a demon that could kill everyone in the city! Opened a portal to Avernus! You could have..." he tails off and looks at Ruhvon. "What do you mean 'unnecessary risks'? What else have you done?"
“Agh, here we go again. These fellas got their knickers in a twist because we stole stuff when we were stealing stuff. They don’t want to take risks, then this business ain’t for them. I took this fine hat here and two books as stated as being ok by our contract and they be throwing hissy fits over it. The books were even for them and all.” Brayton stands pridefully as he explains his side.
"Steal for your personal gain on your own time, please," Ruhvon sneers. "The less trace we leave behind increases our chances of success. Getting the book is not the end of the mission. Tolith now needs to be expelled. Every unnecessary thing that goes missing is another thread the investigators can follow. Why is that so hard to understand?"
(OOC: Trying to talk sense into a dwarf is fun... LOL)
“This is all for our personal gain. Our job isn’t to get that lady removed it was to steal a book. It’s up to our contract to follow through on his part if he wants to take that power. It’s in his best interest to keep the heat off of us too. He has the power to steer the investigation any which way he likes. Grow up, we’re moving up in this business; stop thinking like a paranoid street rat..... no pun intended, sorry.” Brayton will keep his arms crossed and look back to the boss.
"I agree wth the druid. Our personal gain will come with our payment after the job's fullfilment. Leaving behind loose ends is just stupid. You want to go to the bigger game? behave like an adult. " he turns to Pike. " We gained access undetected, stole the book and leave a couple of animated armors behind. We planted the incriminatory proofs despite the slopy side thievery and the inconscience of looking at the book here." he informs Pike.
Pike listens to all of this. His expression is difficult to read. He sits at this desk and steeples his fingers. "Brayton, you are correct that stealing from Tolith was permitted in this contract. However, it was also a central part of the contract to frame her. It was not up to Eirril as you imply - he was specifically paying the Blades, who are paying you, to frame Tolith as well as steal the book. I expect the mission to come first always, with any stealing for personal gain to be avoided if it jeopardises the mission. I expect you to be careful in the future." He pauses, looking sternly at Brayton to drive his point home. "However, stealing a few knick-knacks from her will likely not impede matters if, as you say, you planted sufficient incriminating evidence. So I will not be taking any disciplinary action at this point." He looks at Ruhvon and Rothnar. "I trust this settles matters between you and you will continue to work together harmoniously."
He sits back in his chair "Now, if you could please leave the book with me. I will pass it to Eirril. When Tolith is taken into custody I will call you all here for your reward. I remind you that you have the choice of 200gp or Eirril will place one minor enchantment on an item of your choice. I suggest you make sure you know what you will ask for and have the item prepared if that is your choice. Now, if there's no further business, I bid you a good evening and will be seeing you shortly for payment."
((As a rough guide, if you choose to have an item enchanted, you can pick an Uncommon magical item and, provided you provide an unenchanted version of that item, you will gain the enchanted item. This is, of course a rough guide, and I/Eirril may reject something if it breaks the game in some way or doesn't make sense in the setting. If you don't have any further business with Pike, let me know if you'd like to do anything specific whilst waiting for news regarding Tolith.))
“Next time, I’ll ask and I’ll listen. You guys are the brains in this after all.” He extends to shake everyone’s hands to make amends. But he waits for everyone to leave to talk to Pike.
”You may want to rethink that punishment.” As he begins to rub the back of his head and wince a little. “There was a chest, warded in her office. We couldn’t get in it, so I took the whole thing home. None of them know anything about it. I was going to tell them, but they didn’t even like the small stuff I took for them. I’ll do with it what you tell me to. I took it and told the guard it was to be fixed and brought back as I was using the badge of the parcel delivery badge. I mean he even helped me with the door!” Brayton gives a slight nervous chuckle. I can replace it before it’s too late if you think that’s best. It won’t happen again.”
