Hearing someone else enter the room, Navi would turn around, still with the head under her arm. She’d let a low whistle out watching the experienced vet enter the room, looking him up and down. “Alright.” She’d pick up the humanoid skull and pass it to one of the guys to bring with them before she’d grab the exoskeleton for a 3rd time to haul into the next room. “Seriously though, who’s his daddy?”
Navi would find a comfortable wall of her own to lean on opposite Via. “These fine gentlemen spotted ‘n shot down this creature early on.” She’d lift the head and the exoskeleton a little to gesture to it. “Mapped out a river ‘n a guano hole.” She’d gesture with her chin towards Corum. “Corum here made the suggestion to use the guano fer fertilizer. An’ that’s where we stumbled upon our good friend John Bone here.” She’d gesture to the humanoid skeleton.
"Tomas Via, Guardsmen, now. Former Sergeant with the Cormyrian Army, retired. I took this gig thinking it would be easy. Uninhabited island, security to keep a bunch of farmers and woodsman safe from each other in taverns. Well, this "island" is a lot bigger than I thought, and I didn't bargain for junior Justice in there. Daddy is a big man with the Trading Company footing the bill and raking in the profits from this little venture. Got Junior in there out here to get him away from the taverns and bawdy houses and his drinking buddies. Not sure even Daddy fully understood that we found a bloody huge abandoned city."
"Then the attacks, started. Oh, always loners out there, never a group. So I guessed it was some animal, and not a Ranger or a Druid among us. The rest of the guard are as young as Junior, out looking for a little adventure. Psst. Half as many goblins could probably take this place."
"That insect, it could be the killer, maybe not. By the time we found the what was left, anything could have scavenged."
"That skull, that's more interesting. Where did you say you found it?"
Corum takes another swig from the "loaned" alcohol, We found it at the bottom of a hole in the ground, (gives the location, dimensions, and local terrain) also there is massive load of guano that I bet could be used to help fertilize the fields around here. Since we have brought back the body and dropped off the location we should probably be heading back out there. You got any information we could use, or items? Navi had climbing gear that would have been helpful if more of us had some.
"Well seeing and hearing you make me feel a bit better about the survivability of this town. Having just talked to Vizzini, I was not expecting much as he does not seem to care much about anything but his books. Thankfully you have Altair to help you out as well, which is definitely a boon for this fledgling town. the place we found the skull is also along a stream which could be a source of clean water and a place for hunters to set some traps up for food. Though if more of those creatures are about I would go in a group." Ulrich will chime in.
"Is there any other questions you have good sir, as I could use some of that stew from the cook. Have not had any better stew for I don;t know how long."
"It's a cluster f*!k, that I'll say. It's inconceivable the Vizzini will be of help. Altaira is your best bet, though she sometimes is a little hard to find. I think she suspects more than she is saying, but who is she going to say it too? Justice is a worthless twit, Vizzini cares about numbers and profit, and the Governor, well, I have yet to see him. Spends his time on his personal yacht sailing up and down the coast."
Navi would frown, sympathizing with Tomas' situation. A vet got more than he bargained for on his retirement and is stuck with a bunch of rookie pups. As Corum begins describing the location in which they found the guano skull, she would pull out the maps and spread it out on a surface near by so the soldier can review it. Navi would run her finger along the path they took, pointing out the river, where we found the mantis, and finally the guano hole. She would keep an eye on Via's reactions and what he would take most interest in before finally piping up to speak again. "Aye, we don't plan on sticking around for long. We plan to head out again in the am. As they said, we could use some fresh grub and additional equipment. Climbing gear. Med kits. Maybe a cross bow and bolts?" Navi would roll her eyes at the last one. "I ain't riskin' my good axes no more. Damn flyers." She'd pat a trusty hand axe on her hip.
Navi would like to do an insight check on Tomas Via. Him taking interest in the old skull over the mantis head would catch her off guard. Although she may be swooning a little bit over the experienced vet, she'd want to see if she picks up on any hints of him hiding any personal hidden agendas or if he may already know more about this island he may not be sharing. She would also be interested in seeing if she'd trust him as their competent confidante in this place. Clearly there's no respect for the current captain.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Corum sighs heavily, You surely have my sympathy friend, but if you have anything at all that might help us not end up like the ones who have died I would surely appreciate it. ((Persuasion 23)) But if you have nothing that could keep us alive we should eat some dinner and find someone who can help us.
Georges remained silent, listening quietly as he leaned against the wall. "Are there any spell-books available? Even if it's an older one, I'd like to see it." he chimed in. "A lot of my spells aren't exactly... related to the woods."
Looking to Via, “Yer the most competent warrior here that we’ve stumbled upon,” Okay, maybe the chef... “If yer cool with it, I’d rather come report to you than drunken baby cap.” She’d gesture to the other room. “You can continue to brief him however you’d like. I can’t promise I wouldn’t mess with him.” Navi would let out a little snicker thinking back to his overreaction earlier.
Agreeing with what Corum was suggesting, Navi would tack on her own version of his question, “Got any heresay or history you may have heard about the previous inhabitants?” She’d gesture to the fossilized skull.
Hearing Georges pipe up, Navi would question aloud, “Is there a local library or a scholar?”
"Stick together, fight to kill and if any of you can put an arrow in a flea's arse at 200 feet, you might make it."
To Georges
"These people are poor farmers and woodcutters and such. No money for luxuries like books. Altaira might, she learned. Maybe the Governor, though I doubt it."
To Navi
"Negative, you were hired by the company, so report to them. ry. We went through all the buildings and found empty shells and lizards. 'Course in a city like this, people not working are always searching for hidden rooms and buried treasure. Found noth'n. No trace or hint as to who built the city. This skull here is the first signs of anything. Altaira is convinced the city's been occupied by different peoples over time, and someone built the wall around the city. Maybe was to keep the bugs out. Whatever it was for, noth'n has been in the city but us."
"Bah!" Navi would swat a hand around as if batting away a fly. "Ain't no one here wanna take no responsibility." She'd huff out of her nose and gather up the map to store it away. "An' we were written off the moment we set out." Clearly disappointed with Via's response, Navi's extremely frustrated with the lack of leadership and direction in this place. She'd start mumbling and grunting things under her breath as she gathered the exoskeleton and the mantis skull once again. ...'course the only woman we met 'round here might be the only one who knows what's going on... She'd brush past Via with it on her way out the door, " 'ave fun babysittin' yer man child fer daddy Justice." and she'd make her way to an artisan that'd be willing to take on the challenge of this new material.
Georges quickly bowed in thanks to Via for the help he did provide. "I suppose my companion is a bit... frustrated with the failures we've encountered regarding this area. Thank you for what you have done, in any case." He walked out and trailed after Navi, surprised that she had already gotten so far ahead. "He could still serve some purpose, you know. There's no need to get on his bad side just yet."
Ulrich will follow after Navi shaking his head in disappointment, "Via next time your governor is in town please try and get word to us, I would like to have some words with him. Also, please let Altiar know we will be in the commissary later on getting some food as we would like to inform her of our findings as well."
After a little walking and Georges caught up, she’d slow her pace. “Yer right. I haven’t written him off though.” Navi would shrug before she’d chuckle, “But what better way to light a fire under his arse?” Maybe running her mouth off and challenging him with her attitude might rub him enough the wrong way to do something about it.
Via watches you go with a hard look in is old eyes before he returns to the Captains office and slams the door.
Inside the commissary, the place is packed with human men, women and children as they eat their midday meal. A half dozen younger children run and scamper, while older children appear as dirty as the men from working. There is a line for the meal, and the fish has been replaced by pork from the ship's supplies (a luxury for the inhabitants). The cook, who stands in the corner, looks on with a hard look, but there is a satisfied twinkle in his eyes.
(Did we bring back the meat of the bug we slew? can't remember if we decided to do anything with it or just the exoskeleton)
Corum walks up to the cook, slaps him on leg (guessing that all that a halfling can reach without getting to personal) and says Smells amazing in here chef. And your people look almost ravenous over that pork! What the talk of the village today?
(I was wondering if we already harvested the meat off the skele or not yet. Cause I do agree with wanting to bring it to the Chef. I contemplated whether Navi should storm off to the artisan or chef first. My decision was made to go to the artisan first cause she's sick of lugging the thing around lol I figured the artisan would complain if the meat wasn't harvested yet and then Navi would just take out an axe and start shaving it off and handing it to one of the guys to carry to the Chef.)
[OOC: Not sure we grabbed the meat off the carcass. The Exoskeleton we are carrying around is what the creature molted out of and what it left behind. So there was the exoskeleton and then its carcass. Think we only cut the head off the body to bring with us and left the rest behind.]
OCC: You brought the head and exoskeleton, scavengers had already been there to find the body.
The chef scowls down at the halfling, "Work. There is much work to be done with the ships in. Better to have fresh pork, not something salted and in a cask for a month or more. "

He is being honest as far as you can tell. He might have some wild guesses regarding the skull, but its by no means a certainty.
