Hello! I'm looking for 4 players for a short, low-stakes adventure, just to give this whole thing a try! I'm looking for everyone to post just once a day, and we'll move along fairly quickly. If there's less than 4 players already here, feel free to join right away by posting a reply...
The skies are dark and ragged over the fields of gold-brown cornstalks, which rattle in a biting autumn breeze. You've met at this spot, under a leering scarecrow in harlequin's garb, to answer the summons of one Heldred Gest, a local farmer in need of adventurers. He's approaching now, stumping down the path, grizzled beard bristling, a scowl on his weathered face. His stony grey eyes lock with yours, and he gives a curt nod to each of you. "Well met," he grumbles. "I was half thinking no one would come. I know I've got little enough gold to pay you, but if you find where them kobolds been taking my sheep, I reckon you'll find gold enough. A week it's been now, and one sheep taken every night. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Can you help me find what's become of my livestock?"
Please post one or two sentences describing your character, along with her response to Heldred.
Necria returns the farmer’s stare with cat-like eyes, her close-shorn head cocked to one side on an elongated neck that adds to her already formidable height. A snarl appears on her black lips, revealing enlarged canines, as she adjusts the many copper bangles that adorn her grey arms. “What makes you think it was the kobolds?” she asks incredulously.
"Calm please" the monk Drueze spoke. "Surely there is a reason " Looking back, "normally which way would the sheep head to graze? It may be a good direction to begin looking. "
Jharn stood beneath the scarecrow, a few others by her side, waiting for Heldred to arrive. She had heard that Heldred was having issues with livestock this week. Sheep going missing, or some such. Her own business had been troubled recently. It had been a week since a wagon had arrived in unmolested. Nothing too serious, the odd item missing, horse and men spooked, still, anything that disrupted trade was bad for business. Maybe they were connected. Kobolds was the rumor.
"Heldred, you know this community. What happens to one happens to each of us. I will stand with you in your troubles."
I envisage Jharn as a local merchant and trader. Probably played as a human Rogue or Bard, someone who relies on their wits more than their brawn.
Do you want us to role up characters? I will create one anyway whether she is used here or not.
Thanks and welcome to the game! Yes, please create character sheets, but I don't need to see them, if you're cheating in D&D you've already lost. :-) I'll post once a day like I said, starting tomorrow night! (If you can keep your posts to one or two a day too, that would be awesome, so I can keep up.)
I'm still open for one more player at this point as well.
Belleres Eversharp appears, walking across the fields from the village.
"Well met," said the half elven druid, ignoring Helmet's blunt tone. Belleres knew the people from this village and they did not ask for help lightly.
The druid lived a quiet life in the forest half a day's walk away. Times were always bad when someone made the trip to Belleres' cottage to ask for advice. Old Mother Tanner had sent her grandson running through the woods to ask for Belleres to come and look at her leg. Homewood bound, Belleres saw no reason not to help out.

Great! Can’t wait to start! I know you said you don’t need to see our character sheets, but do you have a preferred method for generating ability scores? If not, I’ll default to 4d6 drop lowest, no rerolls, as long as that suits everyone.
A little OOC information about my character: Necria is a half-orc life domain cleric of the orc goddess Luthic. Happy gaming!
"The kid's right." Heldred jabs a finger at Drueze. "Saw them with my own two eyes, I did, those black-scaled little bleeders." He glares at Necria with his stony eyes. "Dragged my sheep away north, they did, toward the Festerfens. I just couldn't do a thing about it on my own." His voice tightens as he stares at the ground. "Believe me, I'm not a man to ask help I don't need." He grips Jharn's hand in a calloused handshake. "Every one of you will be needed, I don't doubt. And I reckon you're right again, kid, about following a trail...if any of you are trackers, that is." He cracks a half-smile, and a spark of warmth flickers in his cold eyes. "I won't lie, you've given me hope unlooked for. Good luck to you."
Please post back with the following:
--Your parting words to Heldred.
--Your Armor Class and Hit Points (I need that much!)
--Your result on a Survival check, or other check to help follow the kobolds' trail...
“We’ll talk to the kobolds for you, old man, and get them to stop taking your sheep. If everything is as you say, that should set things aright. Don’t you think?” She maintains eye contact with Heldred, looking for any shift in his demeanor that might indicate that he isn’t telling us the whole truth.
Before we we set out, Necria will collect her belongings. She wears a suit of ring mail and wields a shield emblazoned with an Orcish rune. She also keeps a javelin ready in her other hand.
“I’m not much of a tracker,” she says to her companions, “but I can usually find my own way.” She walks in the front rank and keeps an eye out for hidden threats.
With another curt nod, Heldred stumps off to tend to his remaining livestock. Drueze is the first to spot the trail, a line of trampled grass leading into the forest to the north. The gnarled trees press in upon a narrow track, scraping with bony fingers over the adventurers' shoulders. Chilly moisture hangs in the air like a smothering blanket, and hints of breeze pierce the travelers' cloaks like frozen needles. A thick carpet of red and gold leaves muffles footsteps, and, as time passes, icy rain begins to drip from the clouds.
Free to hunt for other signs, Belleres notices her foot strike something...hollow. Poking the leaves aside, she reveals the top of a rotten wood box, carved with twisting vines and set with rusty rivets, hidden in a hole in the path. At this moment, Necria catches a glimpse of a small black figure darting behind a tree, only a hundred feet behind...
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Realising it is probably better to have a hand free, Jharn douses the lamp and cast light on her rapier. Its blade now gives of a blue glow that lights up the surrounding area.
“Does someone want to check that?” She indicates toward the box as she moves another 20’ toward the tree where te figure disappeared. She takes a defensive stance and watches her surroundings.
Perception: 18
OOC: The manipulated rolls is me rolling for stealth and then removing it. No point me rolling stealth since my blade is glowing for all to see :p
Belleres catches Jharn's eye and backs away from the group, moving quietly through woods they know like the back of their hand.
Their quarter staff rests easily in their right hand, looking unobtrusive, but watching them you suspect that they can handle most unfriendly strangers they would meet with ease.
Perception 17
Stealth 7

OOC: It's always interesting to see how folks fill gaps when reading, but in this case I intentionally refrained from using pronouns because Belleres has an ambiguous gender presentation :)
It's bedtime in my timezone but it sounds like we might be entering into a conflict, so I'm going to roll initiative and give my action below a spoiler tag.
Initiative 4
Belleres will try to sneak around to the side, sticking to the shelter of trees. They will use the druidcraft cantrip to rustle leaves and crack branches to distract the foes (help action) if battle eventuates. They will not cast the first blow but will react to a direct attack with their quarterstaff.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
OOC: Good idea - if it is not needed then just ignore this post.
Initiative: 16
Jharn, still 80' or so from the tree moves quickly toward the tree, heading to the left hand side. She hopes that her actions and the light from her blade will act as a distraction to allow Belleres to approach unseen. Even though she is still some distance from the tree she prepares herself for the fight ahead.
Move 30
Ready attack if anything comes within range of my rapier. Attack: 12 Damage: 2

Whispering "may not be what we're after, but be careful. " stealth 18 (if needed initiative 13 )
Not sure where I'll wind up in order, if I stay hidden or what not, but if I get in range of a threat Drueze would try and take a 2 handed baseball style swing while undetected (if possible) Attack: 23 Damage: 11 and follow up the right handed swing with a left elbow jab(Attack: 8 Damage: 5 ) as he resets his stance.
“It seems that some little person is following us,” Necria says to her companions, gesturing towards the tree.
She moves to the rear of the group, placing herself between the tree and her companions, keeping her eyes fixed on the tree, searching for any sign of movement. “Hey, little one,” she calls out, “you can stop your game of hide and seek now! Come out! We have a few questions for you.”
”Yes, take care,” she says to her companions, “there may be others.”
