"Waaaait." With all the action, excitement and free hugs, which Erhorn was visibly tense and uncomfortable with, it was easy to mistake the word as having something to do with current events. "Did you just steal my beer?" The expression on the unburned side of the elf's face was somewhere between amused and annoyed as he looked at Frederick, while the burn-scarred half somehow managed to scowl without actually moving. He snorted, then turned his attention to the blacksmith.
"I'm sure someone will have spotted a group of goblins and a little girl. It's not something you just forget about." He looked around at the rest of the group. "Well, time's wasting. We need to go to this man's home and have a good look around at everything as quickly as possible to make sure we don't miss anything. If they broke in once, it's entirely possible for them to come back and see if they've missed anything val-" He coughed. "-anything."
Frederick rolled his eyes at the bickering, before giving Rickard a pat on the shoulder. "I was about to suggest the same thing. Lead the way, Smithy."
He turns to look at Xan. "We shan't take everything this poor man has." He smiled. "Just some. The payment does matter." He scritched his chin. "But that can all be sorted when what matters more is sorted. Returning little Bess to her home. Right, Smithy?" He gives Rickard another reassuring clap on the shoulder.
Of course, at the sight of Fredericks kind-heartedness towards the hurting Smith, it would be easy to overlook how he pretended not to hear Erhorns accusation, cheeky as the ranger was.
"It shouldn't be particularly difficult to find the kidnappers. These are goblins we're talking about; they aren't exactly subtle or clever, so they'll likely leave a trail behind." Walton calmly states, picking up his shield from where it was leaning against his chair.
"Show us the way, Rickard. We've got no time to waste."
(The party follows Rickard to his workshop on the North edge of town. The signs of a struggle are everywhere: Broken pots litter the floor, splintered chairs and tables, etc. A goblin lays dead on the floor, a poker thus his chest. The layout of his workshop is roughly as shown:
"Well, here it is. I haven't really had a chance to look things over, I went for help as soon as I came to."
Spoiler for Fredrick ONLY:
Fredrick, your Ranger experience kicks in and you are automatically drawn to the tracks the goblins left. Using your Tracking skills (you automatically succeed) you are able to perceive that there were about 7 sets of tracks. 6 appear to be Goblin tracks, and 1 seems to be from a small human. The tracks seem to be going to a fence on the far northeast side of the property.
DM's Note: You are free to look around. A little note about Spoilers: When you get a spoiler, keep in mind that this is information only you know. It's up to you to convey that information to the rest of your party. If you don't tell them, they don't know.
Also, remember, if you're going to roll, the difference between Perception (I look and see...) and Investigation (I see and deduce...). You have to be specific about what you're looking at when you make an Investigation roll. You can't just say, "I Investigate the room." You have to say, for example, "I Investigate the Workbench." When you roll, make sure to add your modifiers. Look at your Character Sheet under Skills and add the number to your roll.
Sorry for the crappy Paint drawing, it's not to scale or anything, it's just meant to give you all a rough idea of how everything is set up. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I want to make sure stuff is clear for you guys.
Frederick's eyes light up as soon as he enters the room, and sees the tracks left behind by the home-invading goblins. Without a word, the ranger made his way over to investigate. Hunching down and taking a closer look at the tracks, the faintest smile crosses his lips as he notices one of the tracks to be significantly smaller and of a human variety than the others. "Wherever they took her, I can't imagine they've killed her yet, if they went to the trouble of leading her off..." He muttered to himself. "We'll have to operate on the logic that they haven't, in any case..." He stood back up, and started following the tracks out past the broken gate to the northeast.
"How long ago was this attack, Rickard? Do you have any sense of how long you were unconscious for?" He called back into the main room, where he imagined Rickard and the others still were. Frederick would pass through the broken gate, to get an idea of where the tracks led, but not stray too far from the party for the time being.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
The walk over to the Blacksmith's workshop was surprisingly short. Surely the clamour from a rousing troupe of goblins stamping through the town would have made more of a ruckus? Erhorn watched Frederick find some indiscernable tracks on the earthen floor and scurry outside excitably. Wasn't that man a ranger, or something?
Whatever. Erhorn shook his head briefly, and walked over to the dead goblin, then knelt to investigate the contents of the squat humanoid's pockets. Gold was interesting, as were any pieces of paper and anything that wasn't fabric. (investigation: 9 +1wis +3bonus = 13 )
(Fredrick takes charge, having found the tracks. He tells the party about the broken gate. The tracks are easy enough to follow for an experienced Ranger like Fredrick, and he can see how they trail into the forest.
Erhorn goes to search the body of the dead Goblin. He appears to have been quite young, the poor devil. It has 2 copper pieces, a rusty dagger, tattered leather armor and not much else.
Xanlanann looks over the workbench. It appears to be a normal Blacksmith bench, old but in decent shape, an anvil and bucket of water, all of the normal tools of the trade. Nothing out of the ordinary stands out to you.
Walton searches along the edges of the property, which is surrounded by a simple wooden fence. It could use some paint but appears to be at least well maintained. Nothing out of the ordinary stands out to Walton.
Rickard thinks about Fredricks questions.)
"If I had to guess, I'd say I was out for a good hour. She's alive! I know she is. Please, follow the trail and find her!"
(Sensing that you're about to head off, Rickard goes to his living quarters and comes back with a box which he puts in Walton's hands.)
"I hope that this helps you all. Please, bring my daughter back!"
(Walton looks at the box: a First Aid Kit with 2 charges. Rickards bids the party a safe journey and you all are on your way.)
Spoiler for Walton:
Through your knowledge of healing and medicine, you realize what this is. If you use a charge on an unconscious party member, they will stabilize and return with 1 HP.
(OOC: This is a homebrew thing, not an official item.)
DMs note: Let me know if you want to do anything before following the tracks, otherwise I'll assume you all take off.
Frederick returns to the front room, and waits for everyone to be done investigating their chosen area. "An hour? And you came to us right after?" Frederick scratched his chin, in thought. "Okay, that's a positive. But we have no time to waste."
"Once you're all ready, I'll lead the way into the forest. I believe these tracks will lead us right to wherever they took her. But time is of the essence."
Erhorn leaves the body, and all of its belongings behind, as he follows the group.
"If what the blacksmith says is true, no-one has paid these goblins to take children." He pauses to let his breathing catch up to his exertion. "Not yet anyway. They're poor. There might be a different reason. And while they have an hour head start, they're probably not expecting anyone to come after them yet."
Or at least that's the gist, in between exhalations and faint exclamations like 'Hoo. Hermiting really doesn't make running easier'.
(Using his experience as a Ranger, Fredricks leads the way and his tracking ability really shines. Everyone seems to be thoroughly impressed with Fredrick as he guides the party past some rough terrain, even finding some sweet berries for everyone to snack on, never losing the trail.
Everyone is moving forward at a good pace for several hours, but it's gotten dark. Those in the party without some sort of darkness vision light torches. Suddenly, Fredrick stops and puts his hand up.)
"... ..."
(A faint rustling noise, then some squealing is heard as a sense of danger fills the air.)
"Brace yourselves everyone!"
(Three boars, 2 regular Boar and one Giant Boar, are rushing at you all full speed. Roll for initiative!)
DM's notes: Make sure to include your Initiative modifiers (Dex Modifier) on the top of your sheet when you roll. This is the first battle and a good chance to test out any of your attacks, spells or skills you may not be too familiar with. Go nuts, as you will have a chance to rest and regain anything you use.
Xanlanann takes one step to the side away from the group, moves as far forward as he can. He draws one of his daggers and holds it by the blade, arm cocked back and readies his attack action until one of the boars is in range
