The bustling mercantile town of Triboar stands where the Long Road meets the Evermoor Way. Triboar’s name is thought to have come from a traveler’s tale of slaying three boars here in the same day, over four hundred winters ago. The town is built on flat, fertile land, with a few natural rises here and there. Nearly half of Triboar’s population lives outside the town proper, on sprawling ranches and neighboring farmsteads, most of which lie to the north or east.
You are currently staying at the Nortshield Inn, an cozy place that you either know from passed dealing or has been recommended by one of you acquaintances.
The place is a bit busy and the six employees are moving through the common room with their hands filled. Three large dogs are resting near the fireplace but every so often one raises its head and looks at the woman behind the counter. She is clearly the owner and has asked you to keep your blade in your rooms.
You can use one of the following ideas to have a reason to be in Triboar and at the Northshield but these are just ideas you can come up with your own of course.
A Demanding Letter
After completing a task and clearing the Mines near Phanladin, Harbin Wester, the pompous town master of Phandalin, asks the characters to deliver a letter to Darathra Shendrel, the lord protector of Triboar. In the letter, Harbin demands that the lord protector do a better job of patrolling the territory between their two settlements. He reprimands Darathra for allowing orcs to infest the hills near Phandalin. She gives the character(s) 50 gp for having the guts to deliver the condescending letter.
Lionshield Delivery
Linene Graywind, who runs the trading post in Redlarch on behalf of a mercantile company, the Lionshield Coster, has a colleague, Alaestra Ulgar, who lives in Triboar with her business partner, Narth Tezrin. Linene has written a letter to her friend, describing recent tribulations in Redlarch, and asks the characters to deliver it.
Homesteads in Peril
Herivin Dardragon, the halfling proprietor of the Harvest Inn in the town of Waterdeep, has received reports that ogres and hill giants are pillaging farms along the Long Road between Westbridge and Triboar. Characters who head north to investigate can see that the reports are true. At one damaged farm, the characters encounter halflings who lost an orchard of olive trees and most of their livestock to hill giants. The Skittermarsh clan has gathered its remaining livestock (a sickly cow and four hungry goats) and packed its belongings on three mules with the intention of relocating to Triboar. The family matriarch, Misty Skittermarsh, offers the characters a 100 gp gem if they escort her family to Triboar.
This has already happened and you are currently staying in the inn weary from the road.
Once you have chosen and made a quick description of your character, write, in a spoiler, something others who have travelled with you before would know about your character.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
(I will choose Homesteads in Peril for Lilandra, Waterdeep seems the direction of Evan and myself would of come from. Hopefully Evan wont mind.)
Lilandra walks into town on The Long Road next to a few mules and a cart being pulled by one, guided by halflings. Their goats all attached to a rope to keep them together as they seem to have a mind of their own wandering left and right.
She picks up her bag and shield that she left in a cart as her long blond hair waves in the wind. She wears a fine looking cloth shirt, as the eyes of men will wander they might notice a chain shirt underneath her regular clothes. Lilandra is a pretty woman but not to outspoken in her looks. Her leather wrapped pants join into a belt containing many smaller bags. At one side attached to a loop on her belt is a scimitar, on the other a small wooden shield both bouncing on the side of her legs and she walks.
She looks to her side towards Evan and speaks to him first Well Evan, looks like we finally made it.We should get a room at the Northshield Inn. I have been there before a few years back.
Her gaze wanders across the buildings trying to find the way in her memory.
I would not mind a rest after our journey. She says as she walks forward again expecting Evan to conclude their business with Misty as he does often (assuming here so correct me if thats not what your character would do).
Lilandra walks to the sickly cow and its keeper, offering some herbs that she would of picked up along the way to try and cure the sick cow (not sure if correct roll but medicine 21) Please make sure she eats this daily like i showed you and she should feel better soon.
After that she will pet one of the goats on the head as she walks past and towards the Northshield Inn.
(some info that people in my group would know)
Lilandra's parents own a store that deals in potions and common gear. Her father and her brother run the store and have trade deals with nearby towns. Her mother left years ago and she does not know where her mother is. WIth this background she is part of the Guild Artisan so she will know some shopowners or traders that they had dealings with. She is also not on the best terms with her family anymore so she cannot easily return to Daggerford (her hometown). Lilandra is a bleeding heart kind of person and wants to help wherever she can. But she tries not to be in the spotlight, because she does not care for it much and also because a knight from the Island Kingdoms hunts her down if word spreads.
That should be enough info to make it interesting and not spoil to much already :).
(i assume the rewards listed are already in our starting gold, if not Evan can have the gem or anyone else that would be with our side of the group)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Evan is a handsome human with blond hair and one green eye. A leather eye patch covers his left eye. He is in drab clothes for traveling, has a lute slung over his back, and has a rapier on his hip.
Evan gathers his pack and shield from the cart and approaches Misty Skittermarsh and accepts the reward gem. He shakes the halfling woman's hand and leans in to speak softly to her, "It's not much, I'm afraid, but may Our Smiling Lady bless your new beginning." He tries to slip 5 gp into her hand unnoticed.
Sleight of Hand: 14
Evan moves to catch up with Lilandra.
(For the Homesteads group):
Evan's large family raises cattle outside Daggerford to supply that town's butcher's and tanners. His older brother, Darvan (whom Lilandra might also know -- by name, at least) moved to Baldur's Gate to work as a musician. When Evan was old enough, he left to join his brother in Baldur's Gate. He spent many years quite successfully as a musician in taverns, gambling halls, and Upper City parties. Then, he had some kind of near-death experience that he hasn't talked about in detail, yet. (But obvious to Lilandra, he has one less eye than he did in Daggerford). He has shared, however, that after he recovered, he felt more sensitive to the spiritual reality around him. He felt called to devote himself to the service of his goddess who had been so gracious to him, Tymora. He received martial training from friends in the Flaming Fist mercenary force and set out to challenge those he calls "agents of misfortune" -- murders, robbers, and the like.
(I'm going to put a random 100 gp gem from the DMG in inventory until told otherwise: 9)
Misty smiles at Evan. "No worries you have done enough my friend. Keep the money. We will see each other again once we are settled. I need to speak with the Lord Protector."
Wallace a portly man with a bristly mustache of wiry brown hair more resembles a walrus than a hero. He waddles in his finely made plate armor with a couple of tankards to a table and sets them down. His balding head shines in the light and his stubby fingers hands out the drinks to his dwarven brethren and company. “Well that was a job well done. Linene was pleased enough for the delivery.... what was the reward anyways?”
spoilers:
Those that know Wallace knows he’s kind of skittish and doesn’t really enjoy that fighting of what their work entails. He sticks away from the thick of things with his heavy crossbow and shoots from a far. You also know he doesn’t have any sense of smell or taste, after effects from when his hometown of Glint Hill was attacked by foul demon like creatures. He hit his head and doesn’t know how he survived. But since then he has only been able to smell one thing - sulfur. He also has an uncle in Adbar who is fairly prominent within the guard.
Branlinn is a muscular, taller than average dwarf with long and thick black hair and beard, his mustache pulled through black metal rings. He's wearing a dark green cloak, beige wool shirt and breeches, brown boots, and a wide brown belt. Shiny black chainmail rings show under his shirt sleeve as Branlinn stretches to fetch one of the tankards.
"The reward was the chance to do a good deed for a good lass, I believe. We ended up not too bad after the whole Phandalin business." He kicks the backpack at his side, rattling the heavy bag of coins inside.
Hook 2 group:
You know Branlinn enjoys fighting, even a little recklessly so, as he tries his best to protect his allies in battle. He's serious most of the time, but he enjoys a good joke. He takes good care of his equipment, especially his chainmail, which he crafted himself. He prays frequently, but he's never tried to discuss religion with you, and he's looking for his brother, whom Branlinn describes as an older and smaller version of himself, by the name of Godmael.
Kalas is a tall dwarf (one of the tallest people have seen) with a very muscular build. From the length of his black beard it is immediately apparent he is quite young by Dwarven standards. His splint armor looks old but is well maintained. His shield is simple and it can be noticed that is has been through many fights since there are some minor dents here and there which have not been able to be smoothened away. He wears normal traveling clothes - a dark gray cloak, shirt, boots, pants. His battle axe and shield are fastened to his backpack while he has a hand axe hanging from his belt on his left and right side. He is otherwise an unremarkable sight. An adventurer like any other adventurer that passes these roads.
"We did honest work and got a just payment. We now have at least coin to spend on food and ale in this town."
Kalas liked working with his fellow dwarves especially the paladin. He often wondered if he would one day be able to reach their level of devotion to their beliefs.
He sits down and thanks Wallace for the tankard and tries to signal a bar maid to order meal to go with his drink.
Kalas looks like any other dwarves fighter wielding a battle axe and shield. Given his muscular build he looks like a formidable fighter. What people do not realize it that he has spent the last several years of his life studying in the Vault of Sages in Silverymoon, researching Dwarven lore.
His clan served the king of Citadel Adbar and he was actually training to be shield bearer. Unfortunately something happened during his training which resulted in his brother dying. The depression he experienced after his brother's death made him forget his dream of serving the king. Wishing to forget his former life, he left for Silverymoon where he researched Dwarven lore. Something during his stay there however made him want to leave the library. He needed to leave the safe confines of the library to go out into the world.
He goes adventuring to be able to continue his research. He collects bits of information wherever he goes.
Most recently, he was lucky enough to join a group of dwarves in their adventures. He has been traveling with them ever since. He respects both Wallace and Branlinn as they are both paladins, the pinnacle of martial prowess and divine devotion. He also enjoys the company of Berdam since the cleric is a treasure trove of information.

Tonight was one like many before; a book and flagon, quite clearly comfortable.

Berdamis always assumed to be older than he is. It's either due to his balding patch, or his interest the crafts of all civilisations, magics of the world and how it is woven itself into nature and odd phenomena. None of this is surprising when it's clear he is devout to Moradin, who is often seen praising and practising rites quietly. That is not to say he isn't a dwarf, often seen laughing loudly after a few, giving sage advice to those after being a warming listener.
He has expressed being part of the Lords' Alliance, an archivist in Mirabar. While he was heeding a behest to one of his superiors in the knightly order, he has yet to mention anything about going back....
The sight of the dwarves in the common room makes people smile. Since the creation of the alliance of the dwarven cities and the rediscovery of Gauntlgrym the sight of dwarves means business. Hard bargains and long nights also.

The inn sees the last customers go and the staff takes his leave in a merry and carefree contentment.
The lady behind the counter comes to you all, last customers and it seems the ones who have booked the rooms. She puts on the tables the same drinks you have had during the night, one for each.
" On the house," she says, " I ll be closing up in a few but you can enjoy the common room as long as you can."
She starts to leave and stops turning to have all the tables in her sight.
" You seem to be a hardy lot," she says in a rush, " I wanted to ask you if you would be interested in a little venture for me ? Not sure how long you are staying but i would really like the help."
" One of my help, a nice young man from one of the farm to the east, has not been to work for a couple of days. I sent a pair of caravan guard who owed me some coins to go and check but they haven't returned. They might have fled or just left but i don't think so. I have a bad feeling about that. Would you mind going and taking a look ?I don't want to bother the Protector or the militia until I m certain there is a problem. I'll pay you all of course. 20 gp each. for a days work."
"To yer health!" Branlinn announces, as he takes the free drink. He was about to take a long swig when the barkeeper turned around to ask for help and almost spilled the drink as he stopped.
"Aye, we should be able to help. What do you say, lads? One more adventure before we decide what's next?"

(since we are in the common room: Lilandra insight 13)
Lilandra is sitting at a table not far from the dwarves finishing the last of a stew after a day of walking. A bit weary from the journey she will not be talking much but will be chatting some with Evan. She will lean in and say The woman behind the bar has been eyeing us all night. Her dogs are telling me her behavior is off. Perhaps she has fallen to the charms of a certain handsome bard. She says as she does her best not to chuckle. Shall i retire for the evening so you can speak with her privately? She smiles as she teases Evan.
As the woman from the bar speaks to the room she will respond We would gladly assist in this. She then looks to Evan for approval, knowing she will sometimes be to quick to offer aid. You are Urgala are you not? She asks. (Having been here before i assume Lilandra will have heard of her and her background as stated in worldanvil)
If she responds with yes:
I heard you are not a stranger to adventures. Do you know of any trouble in the area that could be related?
Evan is leaning back with his feet on the table as he plucks a mellow, improvised tune on his lute. He rolls his eye at Lilandra's teasing, and nods his head at her volunteering. Lilandra is accustomed to Evan not being chatty when he is focused on his music. He might also be pouting a little, because he changed into his clean, performing attire but did have an opportunity to entertain. He is wearing crimson trousers and vest and a yellow shirt, all with shiny buttons and fasteners. Without his traveling cloak, a tattoo of a pair of playing cards can be seen on the left side of his neck, poking above his collar.
"Yes, I m Urgala. " the owner of the inn answers Lilandra but speaking to them all." I would be glad to have some people look into this affair. I ll prepare a good breakfast and some affairs for your trip."
" We have had problems with orcs and goblinoid like most people in the North and the Swordcoast. The militia usually takes care of them. Waterdeep and Silverymoon also send people to investigate large groups. The Dwarves," she smiles at the ones in her room, " have been a great help now that they are united."
" There has been rumors of dragon sighting but not for a while now and a few caravan and traders talk about seeing giants of all sorts coming out of the Spine of the World." She says this with a shrug. Like most people she believes what she has seen.
"Thom is probably safe but sick." she adds not wanting to scare the group " but I would rather be sure."
She looks at the group in askance waiting for Wallace to answer.
Lilandra turns her head to Birel as he speaks, somewhat surprised thinking he had fallen asleep at the table. (placing you at our table)
Oh, your awake. She says with a smile.
Then turns back to Urgala. We just came from the Long Road (SouthWest) where a farm was attacked by hill giants. We figured it was a random attack but if their kind are seen in many places something bigger might be happening.
She stares at the table a moment with a worried look. We will go find Thom and investigate this further. She then looks at Wallace, who the party of dwarves (or at least Kalas) seem to refer to for the decision making.

"Aye, we should be able to help. What do you say, lads? One more adventure before we decide what's next?"
OOC: I'll make the presumption that Wallace is the de facto leader of the dwarven group
"Wallace, what do you think?", Kalas asks the portly dwarf.
"It seems straightforward enough. And the trip here was actually quite boring."
Kalas looks to the others eagerly with a big smile on his face.
"Dragon huh," Birel finally speaks up, "why am I not surprised a dragon's about?"
Elra Skylash - Human Cleric | Vanzaren Tanidoni - Half Elf Wizard
Mindartis Liadon - Eladrin Barbarian | Naivara Siannodel - Half Elf Ranger
Arrila Evenwood - Half Elf Paladin | Callaphe of Setessa - Human Rogue
Katernin Nemetsk - Aasimar Cleric | Melody - Tiefling Bard
Will you journey with us?
