Adventure Background Something evil is trapping the souls of the dead and draining life from all who have been raised from death by magic. This worldwide "death curse" not only prevents the raising of the dead but also causes creatures that were previously raised from the death to wither and die. Lying in a trap-riddled tomb lost beneath a lost city in the depths of a vast jungle lies the source of this death curse, daring would-be heroes to find it...
Hi all! I'm a long-time DnD player with a lot of experience playing over Roll20/Discord, but pretty much zero over forum. I've tentatively DM'd a few times, but only oneshots/short adventures. I wanted to try a full length campaign, and figured the slow nature of a forum would be a perfect way to practice without having to worry too much about improvisation. So just be aware, I'm a novice DM if that's going to be a turn-off for you.
I think I want to start with four adventurers, but I may choose to expand the party early on if I feel like it's necessary and that I can handle it. So let's see if people want to do this.
Creating Your Characters
Standard Array or Point Buy. You may add an additional +1 bonus to one ability score of your choice that hasn't already received a +2 racial bonus.
Characters will start at level 1, and leveling will be done via milestone.
Homebrew/Theros/Eberron/Critical Role will not be used. UA will be allowed by special permission, you must ask first.
All player characters will be familiar with an NPC by the name of Hilda Cere, an aging and retired adventurer that you have maintained a close relationship with. (Mentor, friend, family friend, family, saved you that one time, business partner, etc...) Please describe this relationship as part of your backstory.
Player Timezone/Availability: Character Name: Character Race: Character Class: Character Backstory: Character Sheet:
Adventure Hook
Hilda Cere, your longtime X(specific to character backstory) has passed away. A lifelong adventurer, Hilda never once backed down from a threat, no matter the odds. Years ago, she had been slain while defending the town of Secomber from a black dragon hell bent on uncovering an artifact from the ruins the town was built on. She was restored to life by a cleric of Bahamut, and retired from the adventuring life at that point.
The decay of the death curse was unstoppable once it began, and you could only watch in horror as your friend faded day by day.
At her funeral, you are approached by a pair of mysterious individuals, offering a chance to restore your friend to life and end the death curse once and for all...
You may post any questions you have here in the thread.
Going to throw my hat into the ring here, the Tomb of Annihilation campaign this character was in seems to have died (we didn't get past Port Nyanzaru (spelling)).
Player Timezone/Availability: US EST, generally active from 8 pm onward, occasionally active before then (including weekends)
Character Name: Yesqirelle Lathalas
Character Race: Wood Elf
Character Class: Cleric (Grave Domain)
Character Backstory:
Yesqirelle was always a rather dark child, which set her apart from the other elves. She didn't seem to share the more carefree attitude of most of her people, and seemed fascinated with death. Her parents tried to cure her of this morbid fascination, but she would just seem to gravitate even more towards it. She never seemed to wish to cause it, just to observe it. Eventually, though, she saw too much of it. An outbreak of undead happened nearby (specifics could be tailored to the campaign), and a hoard of zombies slaughtered everyone in her village but her. She was afterwards taken in by a priest of Kelemvor, and became devoted to ridding the world of undead. She remembers the name of Hilda Cere as someone who once gave her valuable information as to a pocket of undead to uproot, and has counted her as a friend ever since.

Name: Nazcan
Race: White Dragonborn
Class: Cleric/ Life Domain
Backstory: Nazcan, as a child, was a dwarf of a dragonborn, criticized for his size his whole childhood. He always dreamed of being giant, so he decided to turn to Bahamut for help, becoming a priest under him, giving prayers every day to be big. After two long years of preying, he grew to large size in his sleep, towering above the common races, towering above the others. However, it still wasn't enough, he one day wants to become a true dragon, so he preys to Bahumut every day, but for now, he uses his large size to protect those who can't protect themselves.
Nazcan happens to be related to the cleric who revived Hilda. They ran into each other some time after her reviving, it sparked a conversation over her stories, his past, and... Adventuring. Soon she became his mentor in adventuring and combat, from her, he learned almost all of his skills in combat, while becoming close friends with Hilda herself. At her funeral, Nazcan was heartbroken to see his mentor begin to slowly decay and fade, and would do anything to bring her back, so he accepts the mysterious individuals' quest...

It is mostly small quality of life upgrades to things, ranger gets a very nice rework that solves the situational problem with rangers while keeping their style the same
The UA hunter features are allowed. Spell versatility for the Sorcerer/Warlock/Bard is also ok.
Player Timezone/Availability: US EST and available randomly throughout the day, will be moving to CST in a few weeks and mostly available evenings and weekends but maybe during the day
Character Name: Voxis Gimlen
Character Race: Deep Gnome
Character Class: Wizard (probably school of necromancy)
Character Backstory: Like most gnomes, Voxis was curious and experimented in all things. Unlike most though, the experiments often involved living (and not so living) creatures. After a series of untimely deaths (family, friends, pets) he began obsessively researching magics for a way to recover the lost or preserve the living. In his travels and reading, he ran across Hilda Cere, a person with more personal familiarity with death than most. She warned him of the dangers and that a curse meant the magic would be unlikely to work anyway, but unable to dissuade Voxis, became a mentor and correspondent trying to keep him on the side of good.
Player Timezone/Availability: Mountain, but due to work, I tend to have a very chaotic sleep cycle and am available most of the time I am not alseep. Character Name: Iskar (Iki) Character Race: Kobold Character Class: Ranger (UA Varient - Going beastmaster) Character Backstory: Iskar's egg was the only one to survive the attack on her clan by a group of adventurers. One of the adventurers, Hilda, found Iki curled in a corner crying. Unable to kill the baby, she took Iki with her and helped raise her. Watching her adopted mother wither away, Iki now wants to find any way she can to repay her hero. Character Sheet: WIP
I'll write up a full backstory in a bit, just wanted to toss out the bare bones.
Siyach was raised by his mom who lived with a troupe of traveling performers. The troupe traveled from town to town putting on performances, and engaging in other related activities, like fortune telling (his Mom's specialty), the selling of "magic" portions, etc.. In the larger towns, they would also rob participants, mostly with pickpockets, but, doing some "second story" jobs. Siyach performed acrobatics and tight rope walking. Hilda Cere befriended the troop when they visited her town. Siyach's mom and Hilda often sharing stories and laughing late into the night when they visited Hilda's town.
About a year and a half in the past, Siyach left his mom's troupe and chased after a girl in another troop that he had a brief fling with. But, he soon realized the girl was not interested in a long term relationship with Siyach. Broken-hearted, he left that troupe and began looking for another group to work with. Siyach thought he had found a new group to travel with, until, they were working a crowd in a town, and the town guard started rounding up the troupe for stealing. As Siyach was on a roof top starting to set up his tight rope act, he managed to get away, and decided to head over to Hilda's town to obtain her advice on life. But, was shocked to find that Hilda had passed away.
Player Timezone/Availability: CST. Nights after 6pm typically. Unavailable on Wednesday typically. Character Name: Waylon Character Race: Half-Elf Character Class: Sorcerer (Shadow) Character Backstory: The father of Waylon has always been a huge question mark in his life. Like many things it never got explained to him. His mother was an adventurous type. The kind that hung around Hilda Cere.
Before Waylon was even an idea, the pair of them(along with others) found themselves trapped in the Shadowfell. A deal had to be made to secure their escape from that desolate realm. The taint of the Shadowfell was passed onto Krios from his mother, who disappeared very early on in his life.
Hilda found him when he was a teenager, and after finding out who he was, helped him out of the streets. He always had a suspicion that she knew what became of his mother, but the woman was impossibly tight-lipped when it came to their adventures together. Player Timezone/Availability: PST Character Name: Flynt Silverflame Character Race: Dragonborn (Silver) Character Class: Paladin (Oath of Vengeance) Character Backstory:
Like many dragonborn, the silver-scaled Flynt was born in the region of Tymanther to a militaristic mother and father. His closest friend was his twin brother Steel, a promising sorcerer who threatened to leave after a dispute with their parents. One evening, Steel told his brother to find his own path and Flynt never saw his brother again. Still missing his brother after one year, Flynt left Tymanther, telling his parents he was escorting the Vanquisher of the region, when in reality he left to search for Steel. His quest to find his sibling led him to Neverwinter. Having no money, Flynt decided to work as a bouncer at the Driftwood Tavern. It was there he met a fellow dragonborn Eyeron Buhterflie, who told him about the god Bahamut and suggested he join the Talons, a group of dragonborn paladins inspired by the former Talons of Justice. Once Flynt's training was finished, Eyeron introduced him to the dark elf Azonia, who owned an adventuring/security company. She offered him a job and a home in Waterdeep, and he jumped at the chance to work. Azonia was a fair boss, encouraging Flynt to use his adventuring to learn life lessons and become more independent. Flynt is eager to see the world and awaits adventure.
