Hello everyone, and welcome to the City of Splendors and the Crown of the North, Waterdeep! There are many things to see, including hundreds of shops, a legendary dungeon known as the Undermountain, and a mysterious trove of 500,000 dragons (gold pieces) hidden somewhere in the city. Your party starts off in the (in)famous Yawning Portal Inn and Tavern, the establishment which stares down into the abyss of the Undermountain. You've been invited there by Volothamp Geddarm, the well-known raconteur and explorer. He's got work for you.
I am jumping in to pay the DM tax by DMing a module I've been excited about since I got it. It is an urban adventure, with a focus on role-play, puzzle solving, and social interactions. The law is strong in Waterdeep, so murder-hoboing ways will be strongly punished. There is combat, but it is not the focus of this module.
One thing I need to be clear: This game will not start until August or so. I am currently preparing to move from California to Germany. This is happening mid July. So, the game will start once I start getting settled.
About me: I am an amateur writer who is writing an "urban" fantasy (set in rural Georgia). I have been a dungeon master once for a real life group, working through LMoP. I have never done PbP. Include the word lizard in your application and I'll give you a common magic item of my choice. I like flawed characters, moral conundrums, and character development.
APPLICATION: I'm looking for 4-6 players. I won't pick players until I'm in Germany, so at LEAST two weeks (21 July at the earliest). Take this time to think of thoughtful backgrounds. I repeat, I'll be expecting players to roleplay among themselves.
Player requirements:
You can't have played Dragon Heist or read through the adventure. I won't tolerate any perceived meta-gaming. Sorry, this is a sore spot for me because I had a real life game ruined by a metagamer. There is a difference between taking Infernal at the beginning of Descent into Avernus and knowing that XXXX is the Big Bad at the end of the module.
Once we get started, I expect at least one post a day. I'd expect some thought to go into these posts.
MOST IMPORTANT, we're playing a game here,. No rules lawyering (I have last word), have fun, be kind.
Character requirements/limitations:
All official classes. No UA, No homebrew
No Satyrs, Loxodons, Vedalken, Simic Combine, or Eberron classes. If you pick a monster race, you better have an amazing backstory.
Standard starting equipment
Milestone Advancement
Point Buy OR Standard Array
Application Requirements:

Race/Class: Level 1 (Planned Subclass, though I won't hold you to it)

Backstory inside a spoiler:
Player experience with D&D and PbP:
Able to post at least once a day?

If you're still interested, post an application! If you have questions, let me know!

Fletcher was born as a normal (boring) human. he was the son of a lumberjack. he chopped wood for everything. boats, houses, utensils, firewood. he loved cutting firewood. the idea that this wood, would become warmth and light, to heat his home in the winter. he was not the brightest candle nor the strongest, but he worked hard. when he was 16, he was cutting wood, and he saw a strange light. It seemed to be emanating from deeper in the forest. he felt drawn towards it. he walked for miles and the light never got closer. after hours, he was exhausted, but he had to keep walking. he heard a name. it wasn't even his name. just a name over and over....ignatious......ignatious.......he needed to go faster. suddenly the light appeared. it was a flame. a single flame. it just hovered there......ignatious.......ignatious....... he needed to touch it. his rational mind told him not to, but it was like he was a puppet. he reached out.....and pain. horrendous, debilitating pain. his whole body burned. it was like he was the flame. and then....lucidity. everything became clearer. sharper. and he could remember. not a lot. but enough to know he wasn't fletcher. he was Ignatious. a djinnborn........he remembered a lizard.....no a salamander..... and a place.....wa...water.....waterdeep. he had to go to waterdeep. he had a job to do.
Player experience with D&D and PbP: 4+ years of 5e, and nearly 6 months of PbP. I know my way around
Able to post at least once a day? yes. definitely once, most likely a few times.
What do you enjoy about D&D? roleplaying is my bread and butter. I am a hobby writer, and I absolutely love PC to PC interaction.
Renee was just another orphan who turned to a life of petty crime to survive on the streets of Neverwinter. She was one of the many orphans Ole Kade took in. While the old halfling was fond of Renee, and tried to teach her everything he knew, but she was a terrible thief. It wasn’t for lack of skill. When pickpocketing Renee often returned the purse to it’s owner only minute s later. When burglarizing, what Renee saw as valuables were usually never of much value to anyone but herself. So despite his affection for her, Ole Kade had to kick her out of the group. With no other skills than what Ole Kade taught her, Renee left Neverwinter for Waterdeep.
Player experience with D&D and PbP: With D&D I have played a bit in high school, and recently picked it back up. With Pbp, I played quite a few.
Able to post at least once a day? Yes, posting once a day won't be a problem
What do you enjoy about D&D? Almost everything, the teamwork, building a story with others, and the feeling that anything is possible with no guarantee of "winning" if you will.

Orphaned as child A sole survivor of rockslide Damian, was found by a Dwarven Couple traveling by. Knowing they would out live him they began to teach him the skills of blacksmithing at a early age. At the age of eight he made his first shield; he learned quickly and soon he began making armor just as good as his adopted parents. Impressed they decided to teach him about Mordain and his blessing to the forge. In time he would gain his blessing become a cleric and traveled the land in pursuit of making the ultimate armor.
Player experience with D&D and PbP: I have been playing 5e since 2015 and dndbeyond in 2017. I would say i am an advance player.
Able to post at least once a day: I can post a few times a day depends on work and if it gets busy ill post once im off or on lunch.
What do you enjoy about D&D: I enjoy the social interactions, that's why I played, but over time I like the story telling and character building.
Race/Class: High Elf Wizard (looking to go enchantment, and more of a support caster.)
Background: Charlatan
Backstory:
Virran was once part of a noble family that fell into disrepute, perhaps in part to Virran's love of tricks and deception even from a young age. Since his home was taken from him, he's wandered the world selling his "goods" to survive. He loves a good trick, and if it gets him some money in the process all the merrier. Failing that, he has always found flattery works well too. He's run too many cons to recall them all, however one of his favourites was selling a noble a golden lizard - nothing more than a lizard he found in the noble's front garden, a little paint and illusionary magics.
His false identity, Aelen, is also of noble heritage, for which he has false papers and a signet ring. And in some cases has been used as part of his cons, perhaps named as the previous owner, or posing as the duped buyer.
The call of such a treasure trove was too much to pass up, and so Virran plans to join the heist!
Player experience with D&D and PbP: I'm pretty new to D&D, having only started playing this year, but have been playing a few PbP campaigns as well.
Able to post at least once a day? I'm in Australia, so post during my day (US night), but will try to post more than once a day given the opportunity.
What do you enjoy about D&D? I enjoy developing various character ideas. Rather than picking the obvious choices in background, I'll try to think about how else this character might have experienced the world. But then seeing my characters interact with others and the circumstances that arise from that is also fun, as you can't always prepare for what someone else might do.
Leigh was indentured to a cruel travelling wizard from Thay. Her master was a miser and Leigh was forced to steal for her basic necessities like food and clothing. As a result, she learned to navigate the criminal underworld as she learned to manipulate the arcane arts from her master. One day, her master decided to travel to Cromm's Hold after hearing of a magical item hidden inside the keep. She ordered Leigh to travel through the Lizard Marsh alone to scout a path through the treacherous terrain. Halfway through the marsh, she became entrapped in quicksand and would have died except for a passing lizard shaman. Leigh's quick bargaining gained her life for her master's and before her master died as sacrifice to the shaman's god, Leigh declared her indenture paid in full. After looting what she could of her master's belongings, Leigh made her way to Waterdeep, ready to make her own way in the world.

However, she is bind to the pact now. She feels like the entity is looming around her all the time. Until now she still does not know how to think of the entity. Recently, Valzes is invited to Waterdeep by a fellow explorer, Volothamp Geddarm. He said he got a work for her. To her knowledge this might be related to exploration, which is hard for her to back down.

Hi there, thanks for hosting the game, I'm interested.
Character Name: Gilmour Van Peartson (Gil)
Race/Class: Level 1 (Planned Subclass, though I won't hold you to it) Bard / College of Glamour
Background: Entertainer
Backstory inside a spoiler:
Gilmour is the son of a pair of Sorcerers from Neverwinter. Expecting their son to follow in their footsteps they were horrified when he declared his love for music and entertainment. As he grew older, their attempts to guide him along the path of sorcery only served to make him more determined to follow the his heart and pursue music. When he came of age, he used his luttery to gain the attention of Leah Ta Fordeous, daughter of Duke Fordeous of Neverwinterian nobility. When the Leah confessed to her father that her honor had been violated, Gilmour was faced with a choice, marriage or death. Gilmour chose instead to run when his guards fell asleep.
Gilmour traveled to Neverwinter where his lutesmanship enabled him to quickly join up with a group of other musicians creating his first band, Thin Lizard. As the band began to play more often, Gilmour realized that, maybe he did have a little of his parent's magic in him. He started to add effects to their shows, thunderous rumbling would frequently shake the stage as they played, small creatures and odd sounds would often accompany their music.
Thin Lizard started to gain a following to the point that at least fifteen people would manage to stay through an entire show without throwing anything at the band. As their popularity grew, Gilmour enjoyed sampling the finer things in life, booze, concoctions of dubious origin and of course, the audience. To no one's surprise, GIlmour caught the eye of yet another influential person's daughter, this time a local crime lord named Haggard Samuel.
Haggard's daughter, Halen, was used to a life of luxury. The smitten Gilmour was forced to borrow in an effort to continually impress the vixen and quickly went into debt, tallying up a large sum with her father. Once the Haggard saw little chance in a return on his investment, he sent his henchmen to Thin Lizard's penultimate show consisting of twenty two somewhat engaged fans scattered throughout the Yawning Portal. When the show ended, the thugs rushed the stage and took all of the band's instruments for ransom. Both Halen and Thin Lizard wanted nothing more to do with the now destitute Gilmour.
Losing his band, his girlfriend and most of his instruments, GIlmour looked dejectedly around the Yawning Portal. One of the regulars there, Volothamp Geddarm looked at the out of luck Bard and said, 'Come back tomorrow, I may have a job for you.'
Player experience with D&D and PbP: I've been playing D&D on and off since the mid 80's and with the pandemic rediscovered my love of the game as I immerse myself in it as a DM for my kids and also for my own enjoyment as a player. The last campaign I was in was around 2012ish and was entirely PbP (Pathfinder). I played a Bard in that campaign as well.
Able to post at least once a day? Easily
What do you enjoy about D&D? Honestly, I love the way that it can structure your imagination, as ironic as that may sound. It's easier to concentrate on a fantastic story if the minutia is already in place.
One added note, I understand this is my first post on the forums here. I am only recently, as of like a month ago, getting back into D&D. I will say this, when I commit to something, I stick with it til the end.
Race/Class: Red Dragonborn/Sorcerer Draconic Bloodline White Dragon
Background: Acolyte
Backstory:
Born on the continent of Laerakond in the Howling Mountains Dra’vos never knew the love of clan for when he hatched he was seen with only fear and distain. Dra’vos while born as a red dragonborn had the blood of a white dragon flowing within him causing the formation of white scales in various patches along his body. The elder of the clan saw Dra’vos as an ill omen that would bring destruction or enslavement to the clan so the elder ordered the death of Dra’vos to protect the clan. The elder chose Dra’vos’s mother to end his life but she could not bring herself to end her child’s life so instead she stole away the child in the middle of the night and fled the clan. Finding shelter within ancient ruins far south of the clan Dra’vos’s mother would find her child’s savior in the form a tiefling sorcerer by the name of Erbris.
Erbris had come to the ancient ruins seeking knowledge of the ancient dragons. Dra’vos’s mother begged him to take her child but he was apprehensive until she shoved the little lizard child into this arms. Where the elder had seen an ill omen Erbris saw a wondrous blessing one that turned even his failure in the ruins into a great fortune for Erbris was a member of the Cult of the Dragon and saw the bi-chromatic scales of the baby as a gift from his goddess Tiamat. With her child now safe Dra’vos’s mother returned to the clan to face the punishment while Erbris took Dra’vos to the Dragon House in Skalnaedyr.
Dra’vos’s time within the Dragon House was filled with strict tutelage in the arcane arts, history of the cult, the cult’s purpose, its trials, as well as strict discipline where he received the last for any misstep. As Dra’vos grew within this strict house so did his devotion to Tiamat, he saw her as his savior one he would give his all for.
When Dra’vos came of age he officially join the cult as an initiate and was given his mission, to infiltrate the church of Bahamut in Neverwinter as an acolyte in order to siphon funds and turn his followers to Tiamat.
Dra’vos was latter a part of the battle at the Well of Dragons but when Severin’s plan failed he made his way to Waterdeep once more joining the Church of Bahamut as the rest of the cult receded into the shadows. When he began hearing whispers of the dragon horde Dra’vos knew that this would be his best chance to aid the cult in order to return it to power.
Player experience with D&D and PbP: I’ve played D&D off and on for a good ten years, currently I am the DM of a Magic The Gathering themed campaign I play with my friends. I also have experience doing PbP rps but it’s been a few years since my last one.
Able to post at least once a day? Unless something unforeseen happens it should not be a problem
What do you enjoy about D&D? The crafting of characters and stories and spending time with friends.
Fossilstone was born to a human mother and a Dao father. After being shunned by the Dao, Fossilstone was left to be raised by his mother, Eindra. She renamed him Vatheud, so as to hide his true origins. It was not enough though, and soon he was discovered by a cult who desired power, specifically the power of various genies. Fossilstone was kidnapped at a young age and used for leverage against his father. Before an exchange could be made, the cultists who kidnapped him were slaughtered by a beast of rock and earth, and Fossilstone was freed. He doesn't know why it spared him, but the experience still haunts him. He now wanders about trying to forget that harrowing event. (Left backstory kind of open-ended for ease and simplicity)
Player Experience: I have played a fair amount of D&D (started in December of 2019) and I am playing in one PbP game and DMing another.
I can post at least once a day unless something happens, in which case I could notify you.

Backstory:
The mystical antics the legends of Evermeet tell about dreamy, sublime Elvish societies are often refracted into more-than-realistic tales. Sylivar was born and raised on those islands in a modest, well-functioning family with an education in various historical and magical practices. As most Elves are, Sylivar was a compassionate individual who enjoyed the wonders of life - particularly, glamorous music and dancing were likings of Sylivar. Ever since he was a child, Sylivar was known as a lofty and impetuous, dreamy and carefree. Beneath this idyllic upbringing lied one of fear and enmity. Sylivar is no different than any other Elf with the joys of life - after all, Elves lived for centuries. Why would they have to compromise on instantaneous joy?
As Sylivar reached adulthood he was introduced to his first few pints of Ale and a few games of dice at a local brewery, named Drunken Lizard. Almost immediately, you could expect to find him stumbling around town with a sway in his step and pockets turned out after long nights of gambling. The brewery was his home, and his curse - decades worth of money and work was squandered at the hands of bartenders and card dealers. Every morning was a copy of the last; the promises to change and withdraw from the life were as empty as the mugs that clinked on the tables of the bar before noon the same day. Excuse after excuse were made in order to take the edge off the withdrawal symptoms. Sylivar cut off ties with the family who attempted to change him for the better and neglected all commitments and jobs he had been working on. At his low, Sylivar could be seen huddling under wooden crates at the back of a brewery, becoming thinner and more disheveled each day. Push came to shove when an altercation in a gambling shanty reached a boiling point. A drunken argument with a High Elf about slanted dice resulted in a brawl. Slyivar was outcast by his family and all ties to Evermeet were severed.
Shaken and poor, Sylivar collected all his funds into a one-way voyage to the Elvish town of Evereska. Already feeling the symptoms of dependency creeping up, he sought out a monastery to attempt to heal his addiction and cope with his losses. It was there where he found a Monk Priest who aided him with purifying his soul and body. Enthralled with the monk lifestyle and now convinced to achieve perfection in soul and spirit, Sylivar decided to embark on a journey to find alternate meanings to his life and his passion. Although the jarring pangs of his old lifestyle coalesced into occasional lapses, Sylivar steadfastedly pursued a life of divinity and purity.
One fateful day, the Priest who guided Sylivar out of the wreckage of his life said to him: "There's someone I know who may interest you. Head to the Yawning Portal Tavern in Waterdeep in one week's time. You'll know what to do.'
Player experience with D&D and PbP - I have only been playing D&D for around a year and a half with a rather seriously combat-focused community, and only found out about dndbeyond recently. However, I have played on-and-off campaigns with various communities that I come from, so I consider myself decently versed in the functioning of D&D. I have never played a forums-based PbP, but I have played around a half dozen campaigns via text and discord chats. I am currently hosting a discord text-based campaign with some friends.
Able to post at least once a day? - Absolutely.
What do you enjoy about D&D? - Different to what most people have experienced, I got involved with D&D through homebrew. For several years I have been a hobby game developer for a decently large online RPG community which is similar in theory to D&D, but with a strict combat focus. I recently discovered D&D was much more than combat and I became enthralled by the prospects that D&D holds. Hope to join the campaign!

One added note, I understand this is my first post on the forums here. I am only recently, as of like a month ago, getting back into D&D. I will say this, when I commit to something, I stick with it til the end.

Character Name: Dra’vos

Name: Fossilstone
Race/Class: Earth Genasi Barbarian
Background: Haunted One
Backstory:
