If possible, before Glowkindle heads back up, Alton will ask if he has a lantern or torch of some sort for a light source.
As for Gotur’s question. Alton will reply with, “For the most part same here. Just been picking up odd jobs around town for dough. It’s a tough city to live in if you don’t have everything handed to you.” After that, Alton’s regular smile might turn into a little bit of a grimace.

Venovar makes a perception check to look for any signs of movement. He also pulls his halberd off of a strap on his back and starts poking floorboards from the stairs. "Hey guys, I'm going to start poking around these floorboards, so be on your guard for anything that pops out."
Glowkindle sees Gotur give Alton the torch and says: "Ahem, ah yes, a light source, right well it seems the big guy has you all set up. Being a gnome I can see in the dark quite nicely so I don't usually keep any lanterns and the like around. Was going to install some lighting with the renovations, but then the rat problem popped up and now here we are."
So, Alton is holding a torch with one hand. Everyone else has dark-vision and have both hands available.
Currently the party is kind of sardined on the stairs, with Venovar at one of the bottom stairs taking a look around and poking the floorboards with his halberd while still on the stairs. With his perception roll, he notices in the right corner of the room what you think is a long, thick tail moving slightly about, and then suddenly pulling away back behind a barrel the second you hit the floor with your halberd.
Thorvin will step off the bottom step and look around, warhammer in hand. He looks back at the others and says: "Remember the most important thing........don't hurt the Ale."
Venovar will also use his Divine Sense ability to detect the location of any celestial, fiend, or undead within 60 feet of him that is not behind total cover.

Gotur will step forward, leaf shield up and staff nestled in the crook of his right arm, to leave his hand free. As soon as he sees a rat, he's ready to summon his magics.

Venovar, you take a step down onto the cellar floor, tapping into your Divine Sense you feel a slight tingle all within your body. You sense an evil, undead presence roughly 30-40 feet in front of you. The sensation is weak, so you assume that there is a wall or something else between you and the undead presence.
At the same moment, Thorvin takes a step down to the cellar floor, warhammer at the ready. Alton creeps up behind Venovar and at the same time unsheathes his shortsword with his torch lit as well. Gotur also moves ahead, arming himself and focusing his attention in the present moment.
Then it happens.
5 Giant Rats emerge from the barrels and corners of the room, seemingly irritated by the noise you've all made and also by the light from the torch. It seems they were indeed attempting to ambush whoever was coming down the stairs because they saw the light when Glowkindle opened the hatch. That being said, given how ready the party was, along with Venovar's perception roll, no one is surprised by the rats.
Please roll for initiative! (Gotur, I've noted your 2)
OOC: the rats have basically completely came out of cover, so you can assume your characters can see any rat that is in their line of sight. For instance, Alton I'd say you can see all of them except #2. Venovar and Thorvin likely can see them all. And Gotur can see all but #5.
Alton, Vendovar and Thorvin are up! (then the rats, then Gotur)
(OOC: I like to process combat in the following manner: all PC's can make their turns at the same time if they are slotted before a monster. This way, we don't have to wait for 1 player to make a move, then wait for me to process, etc. etc. For example, Alton, Vendovar and Thorvin can all post their moves whenever they want, and then I will process them all at once, keeping with initiative as best as possible. Then all the rats will go, and then lastly Gotur. If a creature is killed that someone else was aiming for, I will alter the target to the one which makes the most sense, using the attack that the PC specifies. If it ends up being something more complex, we will allow the PC to 'change' their move if need be. Anyhow... it will all make more sense as we start this battle!)
Venovar, the rat behind the barrel had its tail stuck and so it couldn't move out of the way of your halberd. You move up and indeed impale Rat #3, it's twitching body now on the end of your weapon. (Rat 3 dead)
Thorvin, you rush down and corner rat #2. Your warhammer comes down hard, but the rat somehow manages to move away at the last moment, and the weapon slams against the wood paneled floor, almost cracking it. (miss)
Alton is up!
(that is an example of me processing PC's moves out of initiative order, but within party vs. monster order, just to speed up the game. I will do this from time to time depending on timing of course)

"Handed to you...?" Gotur shakes his head, having trouble imagining such an existence.
If Alton makes his request for light known, Gotur will speak up.
"I've got a few torches... here." He hands Alton a torch to hold, and strikes from his tinderbox to light it.
