The woman shudders and replies, "The devil Strahd sneds them. He is the cause of all despair in Barovia. There is nothing here but misery and death. Some of the townhouses are overrun by the devil Strahd's zombies."

Thpas reaches into his own coin pouch, offering the woman three gold pieces. "This should be sufficient for a time. How kind for you to offer your hospitality. Could Gertruda have left to return to a school or church...anywhere she might feel safe or comfortable, perhaps a cousin or a lover?"
Valanthe rocks back on her heels, "Wait what was that? 'The devil Strahd?' Who is this devil Strahd and why does he cause your village such despair?" Then looking back to her compatriots, "Seems like we have someone or something else to take vengeance upon! We'll bring the Song and the Light to him, too...... Do you think it's the same devil Indirovich mentioned in his letter??"
Byllemura follows Deroc upstairs, heading towards Gertruda's room. "Deroc, I am going to have a look at the girl's belongings. There may be clues about where she went. Would you care helping?"
"Gertruda's bedroom is extremely untidy. Clothes lie al over the floor, the bed is unmade, and countless storybooks pour out of a small bookcase. At the foot of the bed is a wooden chest."

Emre will begin searching the books for any clues, and possibly get distracted by an old story she used to love as a child. "Can we look through these books? Maybe one of the stories might point us in the right direction."
Valanthe, still down stairs, implores of the woman again, "Please, tell us more of this 'Devil Strahd...' Perhaps he was involved in the disappearance of your child - the more we know, the better chance of finding her we have. Please."
"The devil Strahd is a powerful Vampire that has cursed this land. He dwells in his castle a few miles from here. I beg you not to go near it as you are. The village of Barovia is by far the most oppressed of the villages in the valley."
She takes Valanthe outside and points up into the mist. As if by magic, the mist parts immediately, revealing a dark, towering shape. A castle. She then whispers "It was madness to come here. You shall never leave."

Note: You were given permission to go up into Gertruda's room, but the woman (Mary) did not accompany you to the room.
Most of the books in Gertruda's room contain only pictures of castles and spellcasters and knights. You also find a copy of "Snow Dwarf and the Seven Wights".

Valanthe looks up at the foreboding castle and eyes widened a bit by the mist's apparent life, and for the first time, there is a slight quiver to her voice, "Well....," then, with more composure, "if a vampire be he, then we'll have to give him more light than song." Turning to face her, she states matter-of-factually, "If you, your village, and the neighboring villages are oppressed, then we will set you free."
Looking back up the at castle one more time as if making a mental note of its scale, its location, its foreboding call to the darkness and fear, Valanthe grabs the woman by the arm and gently leads her back inside, saying, "Madness did not bring us here - we were meant to be here... we were always meant to be here. We were brought here to save someone, we just didn't know that someone was an entire village and realm. Through the inspiration of Eilistraee, we will bring you all her light and song."
Byllemura starts flipping through the book. "What are those seven wights things?" Then she examines the chest, checking if it is open and what is inside if it is.
"It's just a children's fable," said Emre. "Snow Dwarf gets kidnapped by these 7 wights, who are looking to steal her beauty for their undead overlords. Then she is rescued by her Benevolent Step Mother, the queen, who banishes the wights, but Snow Dwarf's true love is killed in the process. As she cries over his body and gives him one last kiss, Kelemvor and Moradin get together and decide to send her true love back.
"Everyone knew the story where I came from. My...mom used to read it to me as a kid," Emre faltered just slightly, and stopped talking before shutting the book and taking great interest in the nearby window pane.
"Valanthe, could you please be a little more optimistic," Emre said drily, still half-absorbed in the storybook.
//OOC Can't heeeear you (or vice versa) seeing as you were upstairs and I was downstairs/outside - that's right; the party is split! (We broke rule 1 of ttrpg.) Besides, I don't see anything in her words that would be seen as not optimistic - seems to me she was just taken aback from the appearance of the castle... the old woman on the other hand - pure pessimist.//
// Edited for continuity and clarity ;) Emre is a purveyor of the dry kind of humor, so was trying to convey tone when I said "drily." She was employing some light sarcasm. //

// OOC... Sorry! Missed that. Poor day at the office, my reading eye is off. Still going actually. //
Mary (that's the lady's name) says, "Thank you for offering your help to find my daughter. But there is nothing more that can be done here. The Burgomaster's hall is the large building south of the village square. If you need lodgings, there is an inn at the village square." With that, she shuts the door. The mist creeps around your feet and the croaking of ravens can be heard. Suddenly, the sky splits open, unleashing its fury in the form of rain pouring down on you. A blinding flash of lightning cuts through the sky, illuminating the vampire's castle in the distance. Then thunder shakes the earth like a great, booming voice.
Note: If you wish to know the time of day, it is about noon. Byllemura finds several nightgowns, old dresses and bedsheets in the chest.

"Thank you, Mary! We'll find her!" Valanthe yells out as the door is quite literally slammer in her face. Turning to Byllemura, "Are... are those nightgowns?" {// OOC ; ) //}
The rain is pouring down Valanthe's head, her hair getting stuck to her face, and she makes an awkward wipe of her face with her gauntleted hand. "I really hope that this chain-mail doesn't rust - how is it so dreary in the middle of the day? Well... we need to get out of this rain. Where to next? Lunch and lodgings at the inn - and maybe a place to dry up for a while? Or straight to the burgomaster so that we can see about these letters?"

Emre has excellent hearing, and the sound carries fairly well in this empty house.
"Valanthe, could you please be a little more optimistic," Emre called drily downstairs, still half-absorbed in the storybook.
Feeling that her sarcasm may have been taken seriously, she adds, "That was a joke, by the way..."
