Marcel sees what Amodius is doing and shackes his head. Goes toward him, gets the Tinderbox and exemplifies how to start a fire.
Sleight of Hand :5
Marcel:" We now are a unit, the weakness of a person of the unit, is the weakness of the all unit, learn to survive and we all survive."
Marcel's example takes way more than a minute to light that fire, making it a rather low impression on Amodius. Marcel thinks is the weather that is making the flint not to light up.
Amodius stares in silence as Marcel struggles to light the fire, nodding his head respectfully to show cognition. "Thank you for your demonstration, I believe I will do much better when I next get the chance" Amodius says after he is done. With the fire lit, Amodius contents himself to sit silently and stare into the flames, occasionally using thaumaturgy to change the color and brightness for his amusement.
Otwin looks at Amodius' color changing and is amazed. He remembers how those inclined toward science in the Order would attempt to do change the color of fire with alchemy and it would take them a lot of work.
"To do so with such ease, Amazing!," he thinks. He then follows Rain to the dwarf.

OOC: I am considering moving this to a new thread, titled “Friendship Campground outside Starlight Farms”, to indicate a new chapter in the adventure, and also emphasize whatever particular rule set is relevant to that chapter. Before I do that, I invite you all to suggest ways I can edit the Campaign Page. Please consider my computer skills to be newbie level. Thank you.
Back to the game:
The campground outside of the farm seems unusually peaceful compared to the raucous roar of sounds from the jungle. Palm Trees provide some shade and cover. The fence separating the campground from the farm is low and easily crossed. “Bongo” the dwarf (since he likes to bang the bongo drums after dinner), makes sure that everyone learns all the necessary skills for camping in the jungle while they are living in the campground. He also makes two pots of stew every night for dinner, one hot and spicy, the other cool and refreshing.
The farm appears to have many interesting looking farm buildings, obscured by intentionally planted trees and shrubbery. Horse-sized lizards, standing on their back legs with extra large tails, lean down to munch grass on the other side of the fence, then stand back up while they chew and look back at you.
One morning, Bongo leads a docile and calm horse-sized lizard around the campground, introducing it to each person individually. He indicates that the lizard is named Stella and gives you some local root vegetable and encourages you to hold out your hand and left Stella take it. Sometimes Stella would take it with her small little claws, and other times Stella would bend over and munch the tuber right out of your hand. Bongo also helps anyone who wants to try riding Stella by leading them around the camp with the rider sitting in a saddle and getting used to the rhythm of small friendly dinosaur.
In the evening after everyone has been in the campground for a couple of days, Bongo posts scroll to a wooden sign post a few feet away from the cooking fire.
It reads:
”Greetings and welcome to Friendship Campground, where I hope you will enjoy making some new friends while you prepare for operations. New hires spend at least two weeks in base camp before starting their first patrol. Learn skills and familiarize yourself with your fellow campers. Adjust to the jungle environment. Your rank is currently intern. Your pay is 1 gold piece per day, paid every ten days. Your pay as intern includes use of private campsite and dinner each night with Bongo. You are welcome to ask Bongo questions, but be sure to be polite! This land is his home, he has lived here for hundreds of years, and the beasts of the jungle are his friend.”
“Bongo, thank you for your hospitality and trainings. I am sure they will come in most handy.”
Presuming that Bongo is a man of few words, Brother Maynard will only approach him once or twice a day, other than thanking him each evening for the stew and musical entertainment. Brother Maynard would like to alternate his choice of stew flavor each night for the variety. By the third night, Maynard will ask Bongo if he would like assistance with the preparation and/or collection of ingredients. This could be an invaluable lesson in which native foods are safe and which are not and how to prepare initially unsafe foodstuffs to edible concoctions.
By the fifth day, Brother Maynard will approach Bongo early in the day to ask if he might try to handle one or more of the large lizards, himself. This could be another valuable skill to have “in the wild”.
All other times, Brother Maynard will be socializing with the other campers and finding ways to keep the campsites tidy. Some of the things revealed through conversation or observed by watching:
Although Brother Maynard prays frequently throughout the day and especially while “working”, he seems to be most devoted to it during sunrise. He is a follower of Lathander, so this is really of no surprise.
He has been a devotee for at least 3 decades (exact number is not revealed).
He started in an offshoot sect of the Order of the Sun Soul but has moved around more than most followers.
He is currently on a personal sabattical after years of stagnant or negative progress within the clergy. (Through inference and interpolating words not said, it seems that Brother Maynard feels that his advancing age is the cause of his “falling out of favor”)
Nolla greets every lesson with gusto and a smile. She is quick to learn all she can and would be one of the first to try riding the lizard mount. She would chat with Bongo, the others of the group, and even with the lizards if it came to that. She is outgoing and quite friendly. At nights she would play her lute either for the group or off by herself if the others wanted a more quite evening.
Amodius thanks Bongo for his hospitality. He then takes a particular interest in the lizard and requests to ride one of them.
Animal Handling: 5
After riding, he decides that he should try to learn how to gather foods, berries, and fish. He asks the dwarf to instruct him on setting small traps for fish, squirrels, and other small animals. He is particularly interested in making a figure 4 deadfall trap and a fishing weir trap, both traps he feels will be low maintenance and effective. He also attempts to gain access to literature regarding the local flora, so that he will know what is safe to eat and where to find it.
Once satisfied with his skills in these areas, Amodius decides to familiarize himself with the campers, revealing that he is a obyrith warlock, and that the patron in question is actually one of his very distant ancestors, though he does not reveal anything beyond this. He then attempts to speak with the lizards in all the languages he knows (celestial, infernal, abysmal, and common), though he suspects knowledge of draconic would be required for effective communication.
When Bongo seems to be in a more conversational mood, Brother Maynard will ask about the most common injuries/cause of death Bongo has seen or heard about from his previous boot camp graduates (I.e. poison, cuts, crushing, asphyxiation, other). He will also inquire if our employer will supply healing items (potions, kits) or offer them at a discount at the end of training, or should Maynard plan on a day trip back into the city to procure some supplies before graduation?
Brother Maynard stresses to the other recruits that although he has healing skills, he has never used them in combat situations, so everyone should have their own emergency aid available. Something to get you through until Maynard can assist.
Being a bit timid, Jiali would keep her self from mingling with the others on the first evening spent in the camp. But already by the next evening, the smell of stew, the laughter and the sounds of music would lure her to the common area. She would take a bowl of stew, try it and then spice it up a bit with her Prestidigitation. Most of the time, she would just sit amongst the others, listening to their sories or music while carving little wooden figurines from whatever piece wood she could find around the camp which she would gift to the other members of the group. Later that week, she would find the courage to share a few stories of her own journeys
As a merchant, Jiali is interested in the food Bongo is using for his stew and would ask him if she could try all the ingredients she doesn't know separately. Exotic spices and food could be worth trading but certainly worth knowing. Jiali is always looking for the rare and priceless or whatever else would sell well.
When Bongo brings the tame lizard to the camp. Jiali would be very interested in the creature itself, not so much in riding it. She would ask a lot of questions about the beast that she mostly knows from books and up to now, never had the chance to study from up close.
"Is it intelligent? What does it eat? Is it a tamed wild beast or do you breed them? How fast is it?"
After her curiosity is satisfied, she would try riding the lizard, not really because she want's but because she wants to make a good impression on her new employer.
Animal handling: 18
At the end of that day she would try to find a nice piece of wood (Investigation: 15) and after she found the best piece available she would start to make a detailed figurine of the lizard creature for her own little collection . (Wood carving : 9)
Rain is very interested in the giant riding lizards, but lets other folks try first. She watches Nolla, Amodius, and Jiali carefully as they make their attempts. She especially tries to learn from Jiali who seems to do very well on the lizard. After much observation, she nervously gives it a try.
Animal Handling: 19
She is also impressed by Jiali's ability to start a fire with just a snap of her fingers, so she asks Jiali where and how she learned to do such a thing. And she quietly watches Jiali's carving and thoroughly enjoys Nolla's lute playing. So talented!
Rain is also very concerned about the heat. She catches Brother Maynard at one point, "I noticed that you stowed away your heavier armor. I have done the same. It's so hot and I feel a bit of a fool with it on. But if we face the dangers I expect, I may feel a fool if I leave it off. I was thinking about asking Bongo if we're allowed to run back into town. I might see if I can trade my chain mail in for studded leather. Perhaps that's a good compromise. What do you think? Will you wear your chain mail?"
In other conversations, Rain tries to listen before speaking. But she doesn't mind sharing that she came from the area of Waterdeep. She was trained in a noble family and was brought up with a reverence for Lathander, like Brother Maynard. But an impatience to escape the life of polite parties and mundane duties led her to take off on her own. She finds the campground to be more comfortable than the sea voyage she took to get here, other than missing the sea breeze that brought cooler air.
One day when feeling especially restless, she challenges the group to a climbing race up the palm trees. (She has always enjoyed tree climbing.) "I've been eyeing these palm trees. Anyone want to see if they can beat me to the top of one?"
