Rowan, the words on scrolls in your hands seem to swim and swirl, but only for a moment, like something in your brain flips a switch and suddenly it is like reading your own notes. "Yes, fighting is my preference to tracking as well Dame Ann. However, as we are discovering just now, we can't fight what we can't find, so sometimes tracking does have its uses."
"That's not what I meant." Ann responds but doesn't develop her thoughts, trying to keep away from this being more frustrating than need be. Not even the offer of money makes Ann happy, so she decides to speak up for once on what bothered her. "The money is acceptable and a good sum, but it does not satisfy my needs. What I'd rather ask of you, Sir Roaringhorn, are your words. Please, speak well of me for the job I'm doing here because after what I've done to get here, I don't think anyone else will."
(She's basically trying to get herself some noble favors in the courts because she's afraid of what Melina will be spreading about her. I'll even roll a Persuasion check for it if you deem it necessary: 12)
As for the weapons, she's a bit confused. "The silver...I suppose that's important? I remember hearing of that before." She pauses and eyes the quiver, which Bryn is already planning on taking. "I have a bow, too, but since up close and personal is my style, that shortsword seems more appropriate if I'm grabbing anything."
As Bryn reaches for the quiver of arrows he belatedly notices that Anne has a bow as well, so instead of taking all the arrows as intended, he only takes half the arrows as he commissioned the silversmith to make some the previous day.

Sir Henry will chuckle a bit at your word Ann, but in good humor. "Certainly you will have my deepest thanks, and whatever other support I can provide. However, my favor may not carry as much weight as it once would have. He sighs contemplatively, then continues. "Regardless, I think you could already get half the town to vouch for you after the affair in the marketplace yesterday."
Ann scowls but looks down. There was nothing that could be done, so she replies in a sad tone. "That's insufficient but understandable. I'll appreciate Amphail's citizens' words where I can get them, but... they'll have a much harder time reaching to the courts of Waterdeep as Melina's words will, regrettably. I've been unreliable, so it's only fair I don't get all I want."
She also takes the rest of the silvered arrows and the shortsword.
Rowan looks up from the scrolls to Sir Henry with a small smile and eyes filled with wonder. "These are incredible..." She holds up the first scroll. "I could definitely use this one. If I had the right time, and resources, I might even be able to copy it to my book permanently."She sets it down and grabs the second one."The enchantments on this one are a bit more complicated, but I think I could figure them out..."
Almost as an afterthought, she picks up one of the silvered daggers and tucks it into her pocket alongside her normal one.

She also takes the rest of the silvered arrows and the shortsword.
Melina? What're you doing mixed up with that busybody? She's always been more concerned with her own schemes than anybody else's well-being. Never had a need to spend much time with her, thankfully, but her reputation precedes her. I believe she can be dealt with if you show your quality in deeds, rather than words. It'll be a nuisance nonetheless.
As you all divide the gear between yourselves, Sir Henry will roll out a small map onto the table. It roughly resembles the shape of Amphail but built through a criss-cross of lines and dots, as well as several large blue blobs that you've never seen above ground.
Sir Henry will sweep his hand across the map, and say "This is the best map I've found of the sewer system and underground area under the Amphail. My men have scoured all of these lines we see here, but have not found anything of note. However, as you can see, this map is nowhere near complete. There are several areas of the sewers that have not been mapped, and my men have already stumbled across several large caverns during their explorations. It is possible, and indeed likely, that they've missed something.
I would start your search in the Northwest quarter of the city. My men have not found anything concrete, but the squad responsible for scanning that area has not returned, and others near that area have reported an increased number of rats and other vermin in that region. I fear the worst, but if you do find these guardsmen, it would bring joy back to several very anxious families.
I will of course provide any supplies I can for your investigation. Do you have any other questions? My men will also continue to search the area for clues, but it appears that we may soon be busy acting as glorified rat catchers, as more rats have been discovered across the city, and spreading some sort of plague that resists all mundane medicine. I fear if we do not keep this investation in check, the priests will soon be overwhelmed.
Bryn crosses his arms and studies the map, doing his best to commit it to memory. After a few moments he narrows his eyes and speaks.
"Sounds straight forward enough. We'll need caving/climbing gear for the whole group, I'm guessing at least one of those caverns will lead to somewhere where it's needed. Are there any magical lights available for those who need a light source underground? Other than the rats and such, have your men seen anything else unusual in the sewers and caverns that might suggest visitors from deeper within the earth?"
"A patrol that has not returned... that's mischief enough to follow. Bryn's right... any hints the sewers connect to the Underdark? My people haven't ever tunneled this far, but the Underdark is a whole world below... best to know before we fall in..."
"And as for light sources, if they 'ent be lanterns with full hoods, they may be dangerous beacons. Not proposing to be ungrateful, but if torches or the usual top-sider lanterns is all ye' got, we'd be better off if we bought our own. When we need dark, we need no light. Preferably no smell, but there's critters who ken hear yer heart a beatin' down there."
Muttering to himself, "I'd prefer the time to get me hammer silvered proper. But times bein' what they are, a dagger'll have to do in a pinch." He looks semi-reluctant as he takes a silvered dagger to tuck into his belt. "Thank ye, we'll get this mar in the Mold hammered out." he says to Sir Henry.
"Melina? What're you doing mixed up with that busybody? She's always been more concerned with her own schemes than anybody else's well-being. Never had a need to spend much time with her, thankfully, but her reputation precedes her. I believe she can be dealt with if you show your quality in deeds, rather than words. It'll be a nuisance nonetheless."
Ann sighs, being unable to truly disagree with anything he said, but it all felt uncomfortable. "I learned of Melina's treachery a bit too late, but my or your opinion on her doesn't matter. She can and will cause damage to my image if she wishes to. As if my name wasn't already infamous as it was before. My and my family's own livelihood could be put into trouble, so I only try to avert worst-case scenarios." She says, giving a few slight nods to his speech about deeds and words, agreeing with it even in her still sorry state.
Going back to the task, she tries to focus by clearing her throat before she answers. "I..." She eyes her own group again before continuing. "It would not be surprising for me to hear I'm the only one who can't see things through the darkness. If having a light proves unwanted, I have good ears, so I should be fine without."
“I applaud you for confidence in your ears but the darkness underground is not the same as a dark night or the darkness in a familiar house or room. I’m sure we’ll be able find a hooded lantern somewhere in town. Besides having a lantern might cause our foes to underestimate some of our member’s natural abilities in the dark. I’ve not been to the Dark myself but I have explored enough caves and caverns in my travels to give them and their inhabitants the respect they deserve,”he shifts his gaze to Jormund, “though I suspect my experience pales in comparison to yours my friend,” Bryn finishes with a acknowledging nod.
"If it's magical light you're after, I can easily provide." Rowan slips the wand from her pocket and taps it against her palm, the tip brightly illuminating."I can create as many as we need, and that way we don't need to worry about carrying torches or running out of oil." She extinguishes the spell after a moment and puts the wand away. She also carefully returns the scrolls to their case and tucks it next to her spellbook.
If there's a moment, she'll pull Ann aside and whisper to her, "I- I'm sorry if I was inconsiderate, earlier. I didn't stop to think that maybe you had people back home depending on you doing your job. I mean, I have my family, but you've seen how they are. I was so excited that for once, somebody might want me, need me. But I didn't think about you."

To Rowan, "That's a sharp stick, that is. And well done. Very good, very good."
To Sir Henry, "Much obliged to ye Sir Henry. A commander that earns the respect of his men is a powerful ally. I know some of your company's worn out from digging for 'em already, but if'n we locate these rats and can pin 'em down a bit, should we holler for reinforcements? How should we send word?"
He adds, "After all, I think some of the locals having more of the glory wud be good for the locals and for the World-mail in these parts. Nextwise, is there anybody who be workin' on a cure for this disease or a public lockdown? I ken we'll finish these rats and ruin their plots, but it's bound to take time and a fallback plan's always sensible when there's enough unknown on the field, yes?"
To the group, "Shall we go catch us some rats?! ..." Jormund looks ready to go.
Ann gives a serious look at Bryn at first, but then she nods, shifting into having a calm expression. "A fair assessment. I was hoping in my case that you four would guide me, but..." She turns to Rowan, continuing directly from where she stopped. "... yes, a light source of that sort sounds quite helpful. I wouldn't mind carrying it, seeing as I'm the one who needs it."
When their private conversation is had, she explains. "I understand your perspective, and I'm glad you understand mine. Your apology is well received. Though, in clarity, my family doesn't live in need. They could do well without me, but right now, at this very moment, we are connected by name. While that's the case, anything that relates to my name relates to theirs as well. I'm out in the world to make that change a positive one."
In terms of the group leaving, Ann gives a nod to Jormund and then a light bow to Sir Roaringhorn. "Thank you for the assistance. We should get the gear Bryn mentioned, but then, I should be ready."

"Could we send a diversion? Like have some of the guard go in at the access inside the missing patrol area, while we come around from this other nearby one?" Jormund points to the access point just outside the missing patrol area.
