I apologize ahead of time if this topic has already been discussed in the forum. If it has please just direct me to that thread.
I am about to start DMing my group's campaign soon. They all live in different parts of California, while I live in Colorado. We were going to use Discord to accomplish this long-distance problem. But I was wondering if it is possible to connect two webcams to discord from the same computer, so I can have the built-in webcam show me and the other webcam show the battle maps and minis. I really don't want to use roll20, because I want my group to be able to see their own personal miniatures and monsters.
Does anyone know if this is possible, or know of a possible workaround? I tried googling first but couldn't really find an answer, everything I found mostly pertained to streaming the sessions for like Twitch and YouTube. I don't care about streaming our sessions or anything like that, this is mainly for us all to feel more like we're at the same table together.
The workaround I have seen is using an application like OBS with a plugin that allows the stream from OBS to become a virtual camera. That virtual camera then gets fed to discord.
That sort of confuses me though. I did see a video for OBS in my search, but to me, it looked more like screen sharing, which I know discord can already do. Is that what OBS is? Or does it actually work like a second camera?
OBS is a broadcasting software that allows you stream your webcam, and share your desktop, or (in this case) bring in two separate webcams and make one the background, and then have your face in the corner (which is how I have seen it done). This way your players would see both cam images in one camera.
Alternatively you could setup a second discord client with a different discord login and have that discord join the chat as well, so you can get full sized shots of both your head and the map.

Hmmmm this might be worth trying out. Hopefully discord doesn’t get confused with two different webcams. If not then the OBS workaround sounds like my best bet. They’ll get to see less of my ugly mug as well, win win lol. Thanks 😁
As for the "getting confused", I have not tested whether you can run two separate discord clients on a single machine, if you can't it might be worth looking into setting up a Virtual Machine or a separate PC altogether to run the other client from. As that option does allow you to skip out on using OBS which can be a bit resource intensive.
sounds like the easiest way is to create another discord account and just let it have it's own webcam plugged in on a laptop :/. Good to see im not the only one that wishes for two cameras playing DnD on discord.
Create two accounts and with two cameras plugged in, you can select which camera each account uses. You can log into each Discord account on different browsers at the same time. Chrome on one, Firefox or the app on the other.

Assuming a completely fresh instal (which is what I did), you should see five menu boxes along the bottom of the screen with the second one from the left being "sources". Click the + icon in sources
From the menu that expands from the + icon, select "Video capture device"
A dialogue will pop up, with "Create new" selected by default. This is where you can give your capture device a name, such as "Main Cam" or "Face Cam" or "Dice Cam". Click OK
A second dialogue will appear where you can choose which device this capture is linked to. There will be a dropdown next to where it says "Device". Select whichever webcam you want, both should be listed. Click OK
Repeat steps 4-7, selecting your second camera
Both cameras will be displayed on the layout (the main part of the window). From here you can rescale and reposition them to wherever you wish. You can also add other input sources such as screen capture
On the fifth panel labelled Controls you'll see an option called "Start Virtual Camera". Clicking that will enable OBS to start streaming as a virtual webcam. Click it to start
Go to discord and settings > Audio and Video. Select the OBS virtual camera as your camera source
Ta da, two webcam inputs
For audio, you'll also want to make sure your microphone is added as an audio input source.

Haha, I'm sure your mug is fine.

You cannot, but you can run Discord PTB alongside normal discord. (Basically their test version for new updates)

Sorry for necroposting, but I'd really like to know whether this can be achieved in 2024. And if so, how.
