Novice DM and campaign writer, I was wondering if my idea was any good. The main goal of the adventure is to liberate a city that has been overrun by Kobolds. The adventurers arrive at the city, fight off some kobolds, and find their main cavern in the nearby mountains. Clearing the caverns they discover a benevolent Silver Dragon; the kobolds had come and begun to worship the dragon against his will, and the dragon was too large to fit into the caverns they inhabited. He thanks the party for clearing out the kobolds, and I was considering what options for a reward could be. Maybe a single kobold that the dragon had convinced to follow and worship the party? A hireling of sorts.
A metallic dragon would probably give the party a powerful magic item from its hoard (if it has one) or give each party member a less powerful item (rarity depends on the party's level). But the kobold idea would make a humorous story.

Devious serpent folk devoid of compassion, yuan-ti manipulate other creatures by arousing their doubts, evoking their fears, and elevating and crushing their hopes. From remote temples in jungles, swamps, and deserts, the yuan-ti plot to supplant and dominate all other races and to make themselves gods.
I will second what DungeonLord said and add that adult and ancient metallic dragons can polymorph at will. Perhaps the area that the dragon was stuck in is also enforced with either an antimagic field or some magic that kept the dragon in their original shape. This might make for interesting effects in and around the caverns.

I like the kobold sidekick idea, which reminds me of Deekin from the Neverwinter Nights series. Bonus points for kobold Bard who spins unintentionally humorous versions of party exploits.
Even metallic dragons would be loath to part with portions of their hoard, much less a powerful item from it.
Potential twist - the silver dragon is interested in these specific adventurers for some reason, so the kobold that goes with them is actually the dragon using shapechange. It can pretend to be a regular kobold and fairly cowardly (rather than just obliterate their enemies). Maybe it wants to influence them into doing something, or has divined that they are going to a certain place/person that the dragon is looking for?
