Hi there everyone. I am trying to create a custom Feat for a Bardic Healer (I am the only healer in the campaign and am already suffering from lack of heals at Level 3). I decided to try and create a Homebrew Feat that my bard could take (with approval of my DM) but I am finding I cannot actually get it working. The text below is the description. However, I am finding it impossible (for me) to create the aura, the +2 to heals, only used in combat, increasing the heal bonus amount by 1 per level.
Is it simply that I cannot do this, and just have to rely on the description? Any and/or all help would be greatly appreciated!!
Use one charge of your Bardic Inspiration to play this haunting melody, which creates a healing aura extending 30 feet from your body, It requires an action to play. The aura lasts for 1 minute. It disappears if you are rendered unconscious or if the combat ends, but is not affected by any other condition (charmed, stunned, etc). You may also choose to end the aura as a bonus action. *Aura Effects* 1) All allies within range heal 2 damage per round while within range of the aura. 2) Adds +2 to any healing spell cast by you while you have the aura. 3) Gives resistance to being frightened to all allies within the range of the aura. *Restrictions* 1) This melody can only be played during combat, not prior to combat starting. 2) This melody can only be used once per long rest. (see below for extra uses). 3) While you have the aura, you cannot use any other purely bardic ability (such as Bardic Inspiration or any ability that uses Bardic Inspiration). *Extra Information* 1) The amount of healing done by this aura increases by 1 per bard level. 2) The bonus to healing spells cast by you increases by 1 per bard level. 3) You gain one extra use of this melody at Level 8, again at Level 12, and again at Level 16. The cost remains 1 use of Bardic Inspiration per use. 4) Once you reach Level 20, you gain unlimited uses of this melody and the restriction on other uses of Bardic Inspiration ceases.
From the way you worded it, it sounds like you want a toggle ability, something you can turn on and off on your character sheet. This is a planned feature, but not something that can currently happen on the character sheet. You can not limit an ability to be only in combat either, the character sheet can not make a distinction between being in combat and out of combat.
To add the aura, you can add an action, set the Range to self, Area of Effect Type to sphere , and Area of Effect Size to the radius of the aura.
There is no way to add +2 to "healing spells", you can list the bonus in the snippet. You can also increase with level in the snippet by using the {{classlevel}} snippet.
"The relevant equation is: Knowledge = power = energy = matter = mass; a good bookshop is just a genteel Black Hole that knows how to read." - Terry Pratchett
Thank you for responding. I shall look forward to the toggle ability.
For the Aura, I have the Action with the parameters you suggested above, but it does not appear in the character sheet showing those details, not even the range. Is there something I have to put in the snippet for that? If so, what please (with example)?
For the bonus listing in the snippet, I am trying to use the {{classlevel@min:1}} snippet, but I get a return of "no class level data available" when I view it in the character sheet. If I use {{characterlevel@min:1}} I get a return of the current level of the character.
I did read through the snippet thread, and I ran into something saying a classlevel snippet only works on a dual-class character, and then on the 2nd class?
If you would please give an example of how I would use the {{classlevel}} snippet as you suggested, that would be very appreciated.
Did you set the Activation Type as well as the Reset Type? Grappler does have an action so you can see how to make an action in a feat.
Classlevel only works inside a subclass. I did not realize you were making a feat, apologizes for the confusion. You will unfortunately have to use the characterlevel code which does not work if your bard multiclasses. Classlevel works if you multiclass, it only works.
The following tangent is not something I would bring up as you are not looking for feedback but as you brought it up, I'll elaborate on what I meant. "Healing spells" is a fuzzy term, we all know what it means but the mechanic systems don't. For example, is lesser restoration a healing spell? It heals creatures in the same way we heal people in real life but it doesn't restore hit points. To avoid this confusion, we say instead "whenever you use a spell of 1st level or higher to restore hit points to a creature, the creature regains 2 additional hit points." For home games it doesn't really matter because the creator of the feat is sitting right there and can adjudicate but if you were publishing this on DDB or for the DM's Guild that is feedback I have. If you're not planning on publishing it for the wider community, you're fine! (A quick reminder that you do not need to publish something on DDB for other people in your campaign to see it, they just need a link to the description.)

Thank you again. Yes, I have the Activation Type set as "Action", the Reset Type as "Long Rest". I looked at Grappler, I believe mine is set up correctly though.
I can get around the display of the range by just putting "Range: 30 feet from self" in the snippet field.
I decided to go with {{characterlevel}} instead of {{classlevel}}. My DM has approved the change.
Thanks for the clarification on the healing spells. I should have noted the difference and will leave the Feat as Healing Word only (not all spells that heal hit points) for my own use. I was eventually planning to publish it on DDB for others to use. I will look at it again once I have used it more in the campaign I am in. However, the suggestions and feedback are great.
If you would LIKE to provide feedback, then please do so.
Would someone (anyone??!!) please check the Homebrew links at the bottom of my page and let me know if they actually work or not? I am the only one in my campaign with a D&DB subscription, so the others in my campaign cannot check Homebrew.

The others in your campaign might have “homebrew” toggled off in their characters. If they toggle that on everyone in your campaign can view anything in your collection. If it is in your “creations” but not in your “collection” they can’t see it in the campaign either.
Just a heads-up in case you are unaware, for people who use their phones to use the website instead of the app might to even know there are siglines under our posts (among other things) unless they turn their phones sideways. Not everyone does.
Thank you for your response. What I meant by those using my campaign is that they cannot see the general overall Homebrew collection. They can see mine.
All I wanted to know was if the general D&DB community that has access to Homebrew can use my links to see my individual Homebrew creations as categorized. However, I imagine they can seeing my links are very similar to your own.
There is no “general overall Homebrew collection.” In campaign they can only see what is in your collection or in their own collections individually. The players in my campaign cannot see your homebrew collection because I have not added any of your homebrews to “my collection.”
No worries. As long as you learned the information you came here seeking then all is well. Have we answered your question?
Ps. A subscription is not required to view homebrewed material, nor is it required to publish homebrewed material either. A subscription is only required to add someone else’s homebrewed material to your collection. You and all of your players can view anything that anyone publishes. Only you can add other people’s stuff to your “collection” because only you have the subscription. But if you add my stuff to your collection then all of your players would have access to that material for any characters they use in your campaign.

I also took your hint about "healing spells" and changed the Feat by restricting the bonus to "Healing Word" only.

The listings are public so they can all see the homebrew. Your signature links are all working.

There is no “general overall Homebrew collection.” In campaign they can only see what is in your collection or in their own collections individually. The players in my campaign cannot see your homebrew collection because I have not added any of your homebrews to “my collection.”
