Old topic but I just ignore the XGE ruling about identifying spells taking up a reaction and let players roll an arcana check. I use the same rules for any monster / caster NPC I'm running. This way, a player can make an informed decision about a counter spell and I don't have any DM "metaknowledge".
I do agree, the overall mechanic sort of sucks. But I'm running it without any modifications so far, except the Arcana check, and it doesn't seem to have derailed anything too severely. Currently delving into high level campaign and the players are facing off against a Lich so we'll see if that changes... If they can counter the big bad spell, kudos. Anything above 3rd isn't guaranteed, so there is a bit of drama with those rolls.
I left it to my players. Offered them a "counterspell truce" - I would never use it if they never took it. Even if they said no, I realized it would allow me to use CS without feeling like Mr. Goodtime-killer because they opted in to it. I think it should at least be brought up in Session 0 for this reason.
Ways to stop counterspell.
