If you are hidden before the first round of combat you can surprise your opponents and get a free round to attack them before they can react. (You are no longer hidden after you attack.)
I am really enjoying PbP battles. Maybe I am doing it all wrong, but when I play tabletop pen and paper D&D, it is just not as exciting. Things can often get bogged down, whereas in PbP the action is more spaced out and you have more time to think of what you will do with your turn. And then there is the whole narrative thing..... ;)
Pen and paper: You.... hit the goblin in the head. It bleeds.
PbP: The goblin goes down from your well-aimed blow, spurting it's life-blood onto the rough stone tiles of the floor. It's comrades shriek and attack with a new fury.
Agreed. I usually spend most of my time in a live game confused by my player's choices and have no time to come up with reasonable or entertaining responses to my PC's actions. As a result my NPC's end up very generic and almost always befuddled. That said it is always entertaining to see what comes next when your players have no time to plan their next move and are forced to think on their feet. I also rarely have time to play live, Play by post takes all of 10-15 min of my day at a time as opposed to having to try to schedule a few hours where my entire group can get together and play.
Though I don't have much free time now, I did have it last year and will hopefully have it again from June. Unfortunately, no one I personally know has even heard of DnD so I can't play a live game. Moreover, I have never seen a single DnD related book being sold in any book shop I went to (And I went to quite a few).
And here's the best part! I asked two people to play DnD with me. One asked where to download it from and what are the system requirements to install it and the other said he knew a small park near his house where we would have lots of open space and movement room to play.

(Sitting in a corner, trying to catch his breath from laughing so hard!)
I do not think that in my country dnd was popular until 3.5. We played Warhammer FRP and our "domestic" systems (but this was...well around 2004 ;) ) now i have some people at work that play dnd and pathfinder (i saw them reading some rpg books at dinners) but as i am known for training rugby and exercising a lot at the gym..well it is hard to start conversation. They hide everything when someone enter the kitchen :D
No Monty Python fans here? *sigh* I'm so old.
I am afraid you are not the only one old here;)
“Bring put your dead!”
Heres one: (set to a catchy tune) “The inquisition, what a show! The inquisition, here we go!”
anyway, it’s Easter Weekend, so I won’t post till Monday. FYI
Ha Ha, classic.
Hey, at least I have heard of Monty Python. :)

"Hwell" i am as old as "Fish called wanda" ;)
More or less hidden works like this:
If you are hidden before the first round of combat you can surprise your opponents and get a free round to attack them before they can react. (You are no longer hidden after you attack.)
So how will it work in the current case? We hid before the first round of combat (before DM said "roll initiative")
You also have advantage on the first attack when hidden, I believe.
Oh right! Forgot about that
Everyone handled surprise just fine.

Agreed. I barely even have a group going, so I get most of my D&D in through PbP.

I am almost crying from laughter. But seriously, my situation is not so very different.
