Marigold nods her head in affirmation, waiting for Cariadne to do their inspection before they'd likely be proceeding down into this trapdoor. "If you don't mind, I'd like to proceed first. I can be a bit of a...buffer, so to speak. Not that I don't believe you fully capable of holding your own."
Cariadne nods. "Of course! I'm always happy to not be the buffer!"
Given the affirmation, and assuming that Cariadne doesn't find any traps and the trapdoor isn't locked, Marigold will attempt to slip her way inside and gauge quickly just how much room they have within the space, and what animal form might be appropriate. She'd prefer to turn into a dire wolf in most circumstances where combat or the tracking of scent or sound might be useful but---perhaps the space will be too small, and a normal wolf might have to suffice instead.
Cariadne whispers to Marigold "Hey, did you lock the door behind us? If we're heading down here it might be best to make sure nobody can easily come up behind us."
If it's a negative, Cariadne swiftly goes back to the door, locks it from the inside and pockets the key again before returning.
Marigold, you've lost sight of the rat and it has vanished into thin air.
Bart, you spot a seam of a trap door underneath a massive wardrobe in the bedroom. The dirt near the edges of it suggest it has not been moved recently.
At this point, Brother Tobias's voice grows a bit of steel, and he says suddenly, "You both are coming outside with me to see what your 'friends' have gotten into."

Marigold, seeing that her companion was back, dipped down into the trapdoor finally. Taking care as she went down to let her shape adjust, body shrinking on the fly till what was at the bottom of the stairs was a wolf--with golden fur. Immediately on guard as it peered around the space within.
Bart is going to block the door. "Brother Tobias, I don't know what's happening, but I know I smell a rat. You're not going to stop my friends from doing their job. You're going to wait right here, and be patient. In fact, how about we all take a gander at that there trap door." He points at the hidden trapdoor.

Insight tor Barbär: 17
"And besides, do we look like the type to be intimidated? What was it you said? "Holy judgement"? Do you mean like this?-" Barbär lifts his left hand holding just a strip of paper, with some scribbling on it. He rubs his fingers together on the paper and it ignites and burns away as fast as a match head, as he casts Searing Smite. The head of the warhammer he has on his back glows a soft blue from under his shield as he brings it up to the front. Visibly it is a blue flame that matches the treated blueshine chainmail of heated metal.
"Now. Do as my friend says."

Confirms she cannot lock the door behind them, and will wait till said door -is- locked before proceeding.
[That's fine, DM! The boys have been waiting for a few posts, so getting back to them is understandable]
