Kiselina was formulating what he wanted to say in his mind. Something along the lines of, “Yes gentlemen, I agree that interfering with deputies of the law is serious business. And that justice must be upheld. As a servant of Bahamut, administration of justice is one of my tenants. I am still unsure what exactly transpired here, but I’m willing that bet that it involves far too many mis-understandings.”
Perhaps it is here that Elsa interjects however, disrupting the knights attempts at formulating a de-escalating the tension approach. Either way, he is woefully unprepared to react to anything quickly.
As soon as the leader slaps Elsa, Daphyra points at him and says "Dong", casting Toll the Dead.(WIS DC 13 - 3 damage if unhurt, 10 damage if already hurt)

This Mug immediately shared with me a transcendental tale of an Infinite Mug that anchors the Universe and keeps it from folding in on itself. I filed this report under "illogical nonsense" and asked why its sign is in Times New Roman font, when it is basic knowledge that Arial Black is a far superior font. I wondered: How did this mug even get past the assembly line with its theistic beliefs and poor font choices?

Ringleader WIS save 1
As the ringleader hovers over Elsa, who holds her cheek in shock, Daphyra’s Toll the Dead resounds in the ruffian’s soul. He grits his teeth, grunting, but an agonized scream is torn out of him. He covers his hears and flees, madly to escape the pain. He blindly flips over the little henyard fence as his ears, then his face blacken like charcoal, and moves no more among another flurry of feathers and distraught hens.

Linene Stonewall vs. Redbrand #4. Light Crossbow 10 / 6 HP piercing
(Rerolled offline. Still a miss).
Linene Stonewall, whose crossbow has been leveled at Redbrand #4 this entire time, also reacts to Elsa being slapped. She pulls the trigger, a bolt zips out of the window, but the Redbrand had kept a sidelong watch on her and turns just enough at the right moment to avoid the wooden missile, which THUNKs into the bathhouse wall behind him.
Continuing with Round 3. Redbrands 5, 4 and 2 go before the players.
Redbrand 5 is an older fighter whose mess of a nose has been broken at least 4 times. He rushes to join the pile-on around Nosam and slashes with his short sword.
Redbrand 5: Shortsword vs. Nosam: 9 / 7 slashing damage
Redbrand 5: Shortsword vs. Nosam: 10 / 5 slashing damage
Redbrand 2, the multi-colored stubbled man, rushes forward to grab at Elsa. He holds his blades crossed in front of her neck, as her eyes sparkle big and round in fear. Readied attack: kill Elsa if the players don’t halt or if Elsa moves. He shouts, “ALL RIGHT!!! THAT’S ENOUGH!!! STOW YER WEAPONS OR MISS PRETTY BUYS IT!!!”
You are now situated like so:
Berry, Marten, and Vidruth are up and may post in any order.
vidruth grins mirthlessly raising both hands as if to surrender and backing up further behind kiselina just a hint of flame curling in his right, as the fingers of his left run carefully along the carvings on his staff as he drops it

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Marten had hoped that Kiselina and Daphyra could make these men listen to reason, but they've shown their true colors. They may call themselves "deputies of the law," but they're clearly no better than the goblins, quick to attack and willing to harm innocent villagers to maintain their control of Phandalin.
Marten had thought of trying to even the odds for Nosam quickly with a trickier "killing shot," like he did with the bugbear, but with Elsa and all of his friends in the way, he was already worried that he might hit one of them. When the Redbrands attack and Daphyra kills their ringleader, Marten takes an arrow and draws his bow, but the Redbrand's threat makes him hesitate.
"marten" he whispers urgently "shoot for the throat, you wont miss"
They all came through the Cragmaw Cave alive, and Marten has no reason to doubt Vidruth or the half-orc's magic. He switches his aim to the throat of the Redbrand who is threatening Elsa, takes a short, calming breath, and releases the arrow.
As soon as the arrow is away, Marten starts moving across the alley to the corner of the stables. He watches to see whether he managed to kill the Redbrand, and assuming that he did, Marten yells, "Elsa! Run! Get out of there!" Then he darts across the alley to the corner of the stables and tries to find a hiding spot there.
Action: Attack, Shortbow (80/320): 16 Damage: 18 If the attack above wasn't already a critical hit, here are the extra damage dice if Vidruth managed to make it a critical hit: 10 Movement: ~25' to move behind Vidruth and across the alley to the corner of the stables (R19) Bonus Action: Cunning Action, Hide - Stealth18 Free Action: Drawing an arrow, shouting.
Explanation of attack roll:
I applied a -5 penalty (for the sharpshooter +10 damage) and a -2 penalty (according to post #848) to the attack roll. I rolled the attack with advantage on the assumption that Marten's Stealth 19 (post #857) was sufficient to hide the Redbrands. If they weren't specifically looking for him behind the other party members, I guessed that they'd only spot him if they had a passive perception of 19 (unlikely!). Since he's attacking with advantage, I also applied sneak attack damage.
Berry stopped dead in his tracks when Elsa was taken hostage. He was ready to surrender to the lot when suddenly Marten took an expert shot at Elsa’s captor. The sudden momentum pulled Berry out of his stupor and the emotional overload of the last few seconds was just too much for the small fey to handle. With a battle cry in a low guttural language, he throws himself into melee with Nosam and the thugs, where he strikes recklessly at the single bandit behind Nosam (R4).
Move: R6 (the square not the Redbrand, letting himself drop down the few feet to reach them) Bonus: Rage Action: Attack R4 with short sword, hit: 12/13, for 9 damage Free: Reckless Attack

It isn’t until Marten steps into view – barely into view, behind Vidruth, Kiselina, and of course, Elsa, that Redbrand 2 has a sudden memory. His cuirassed leather gorget, which had gotten wet and was giving him a rash. He’d left it atop a post in the sun today so that it would completely dry. Alas, for Marten’s arrow whips past Vidruth’s shoulder, speeds under Kiselina’s left arm, over Elsa’s shoulder, and finds its mark, exactly where the gorget should have deflected it. The ruffian’s blade drops, and, already dead where he stands, the Redbrand keels over backwards into the mud.
Redbrand 4 watches as Berry launches into battle, but with unexpected strength in his skinny muscles, raises his blade just in time to parry the fairy’s reckless assault. (AC is 14)
Redbrands 6 & 3 now act.
Redbrand 6, Donjon-man, stomps forward toward Berry, holding his shortsword in a reverse grip and slashing with well-timed motions.
Redbrand 6: Shortsword vs. Berry: 20 / 6 slashing damage
Redbrand 6 Shortsword vs. Berry: 12 / 6 slashing damage
Redbrand 3, the brutish lantern-jaw, continues his assault on Nosam, heavy overhand blows alternating with unexpectedly quick footwork.
Redbrand 3: Shortsword vs. Nosam: 19 / 3 slashing damage
Redbrand 3: Shortsword vs. Nosam: 13 / 8 slashing damage
Nosam, Daphyra & Kiselina may now act in any order.
vidruth sees marten moving on his words, and takes just long enough to see the redbrand drop with fletching protruding from his throat when he swaps targets and releases the flame that was building, striking another redbrand threatening nosam

Kiselina is caught flat-footed. He was sure that the few things he had heard and been told about the Redbrands had to be exaggerations by locals. Living on the edge of the wilderness, they simply had to be unaccustomed to real law-enforcement. He felt positive that at most, perhaps a few ‘bad-apples’ were responsible for the reputation the group had received. Perhaps these are those ‘bad-apples’ and the rest of the organization could be salvaged.
Regardless, striking an unarmed non-combatant already on the ground for simply interjecting (as Elsa had)…that was not acceptable…that could not be legal even here in Phandalin. And a competent town-master wouldn’t resort to employing ruffians. But if he was wrong about the Redbrands, perhaps he was just as wrong about Harbin. The Paladin would have to address that, but that was for the future, this was the present.
The Dragonborn hears Daphyra’s ‘Dong’ for her spell and watches as the one Redbrand stumbles and falls. He feels the fletching of Marten’s arrow as it passes under his arm, dropping a second. He sees Berry close with and engage a third as Vidruth’s Fire Bolt flies past as well. He’s unsure what Nosam will do, but it’s time for him to act.
The knight strides forward, an air of authority in his voice, “It is you that will drop your weapons! You will resign your position from the Redbrands immediately! As a servant of Bahamut, I have judged you unjust. Submit to a proper authority, NOW!”
Nosam rolls with the flurries the best he can and luckily only one left a lingering pain. "Glad you all made it, I was beginning to wonder..." He turns his attention to R4 (if he is still alive, otherwise R3) and winds up for another swing from his hammer. Being surrounded by 3, he's hoping at least one of these can be dealt with quickly.
