Nosam realizes this went south in a hurry. He avoids any significant damage from the dagger, but the sword leaves him with a burning pain as he lets out a yelp from the cut. Blood begins to ooze from him and he retaliates against who he assumes is the leader of the two, the one with the longsword.
He is unsure if any of his friends heard him or are on the way or if there will be any assistance from Toblen.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Nosam and the ringleader circle each other in the little courtyard behind the inn, surrounded by the bathhouses, a small stable, and a fenced-in henhouse. The dwarf’s hammer suddenly whips around, striking the man’s hip forcefully. If not for the Redbrand’s cuirassed armor, it might have broken bones. As it is, the blow knocks him off balance. He stumbles but keeps his footing, grunting in pain. Nosam thinks one more hit like that will take him down.
Grimacing, the ringleader shoots glances at the other Redcloaks. This is no longer a duel. Redband 2, a long-armed man with red and white-haired stubble on his chin, advances on Nosam. This was the trigger for Toblen Stonehill’s readied crossbow attack.
(Crossbow: 14 to hit / 2HP)
The bolt whips through the air, cracking against the man’s armor, sure to leave a nasty bruise. The stubbled Redbrand 2 changes targets, advancing now on Toblen. This event triggers Mrs Stonehill’s readied attack. (Crossbow: 19 to hit / 5HP)
Her bolt strikes the stubbled man in the shoulder, sticking there. Yelling in pain, ripping out the bolt furiously, he shouts, “First you,” – Toblen – , “then you!!,” Mrs Stonehill. He (Redbrand 2) lunges forward and strikes at Toblen twice with his short sword. The innkeeper parries the first blow with his crossbow, and the short blade breaks the string with a twang and sends the weapon cracking against the ground. Grabbing at Toblen's shirt to keep him still, the Redbrand slashes again. The innkeeper dodges behind the doorway, his shirt sleeve ripping off at the shoulder, and the stubbled man’s sword thunks into the doorframe.
Redbrand 3, a brutish square-framed man with a lantern jaw and no neck, throws Umberto to the ground. The old man’s head conks against the henhouse wall and he is knocked out cold. Spooked, several hens start clucking loudly and flutter up and into the courtyard, feathers flying. Lantern jaw draws his blade and flanks Nosam.
Redbrand 4, a lean, slithery fellow with slick black hair, who had been holding Elsa, lets go of her and advances on Nosam. Elsa makes an attack of opportunity as he goes, unarmed combat. She hits with an 18, battering him with her fists, but does 0 HP damage (low STR).
Smiling cruelly, Slithery now has Nosam completely boxed in and slices twice with his short sword.
Redbrand 4: Shortsword vs. Nosam: 23 / 4 slashing damage
Redbrand 4: Shortsword vs. Nosam: 23 / 3 slashing damage
Toblen Stonehill, now unarmed, slams shut the inn’s back door and disappears from view.
Mrs Stonehill now takes her turn, firing at the Redbrand who attacked Toblen, but her bolt thunks into a bathhouse wall.
Marten, Berry, Daphyra, Kiselina and Vidruth are all 90’ away from the melee. The inn’s back courtyard is surrounded by 3 bathhouses, a henhouse, and a stable. These block your view, so you must be within 20’ of the melee to see what is happening or target one of the Redbrands. Redbrand 1 (the ringleader), 3, and 4 are engaged with Nosam. When you are close enough to see them, firing at them will be at -2, and misses may strike Nosam instead.
Marten and Daphyra may now take Round 1 actions, followed by Kiselina, Berry, and Vidruth.
(OOC: I am traveling, so we will have to do this without a map.)
As Berry, Vidruth, and Marten make their way toward the Stonehill Inn, Marten suddenly stops for a moment, listening. He says, "Fightin'! At Stonehill's!!!" Even before the words leave his mouth, Marten is already sprinting toward the Inn ahead of the others. There's no time to scout, but he could at least warn the others about what to expect.
As soon as Marten is close enough to see the scene in the courtyard, he skids to a halt. He takes in the scene and then back-pedals away from the fight, trying to make room for his companions to pass him and help Nosam. As he takes his bow in hand, he shouts loudly to any of his companions who followed, "Nosam 'n' four thugs wi' swords!" Marten wants to make sure his friends know what they're running to, but he also wants Nosam (and the thugs!) to know that the dwarf isn't alone.
Movement: Up to 90' of movement (including cunning action). Running 70' to get line of sight on the fight. Using the remaining 20' of movement to retreat out of melee range and to make way for the fighters to get into the courtyard. Ending ~40' from the melee. Action: Dash Bonus Action: Cunning Action, Dash Free Action: Talking, drawing his bow
Kiselina, listening to Sister Garaele speak and watching the children play, is caught unaware as the Haregon dashes away leaving only the faintest of a clue.
Daphyra is on the alert. She calls "That doesn't sound good!" and dashes (60ft) towards the sounds at the inn.
Then the Paladin watches as Martin does a similar action, dashing away from the group, covering much more ground. “Excuse us Sister!” Is all he gets out as he trails as quickly as he can the priestess of Bestet. He is unaware of what Martin refers to, he’s still too far away at the end of round one to see anything. But prepares to engage in unarmed combat cause the knight carries no arms nor armament around town. (Move: 60’ Dash, but behind Daphyra)
Suddenly, everyone around Berry springs into action, with Marten apparently having a better view. What did Nosam get himself into? He wonders as he soars (dashes) up over the nearest building with a preference for the lower ones. While he left his shield and scimitar back at the inn, Berry did bring his shortsword and whip, of which he draws the former. If he sees better from his high vantage point (if not ignore this), he shouts to Nosam, "We're coming, Nosam! Don't let them hit you!"
Move: move to top of a nearby building and towards Nosam and the noise (perhaps 30, 40, or 50 feet high? perhaps a bathhouse, or henhouse?) Action: dash
vidruth remains silent, and instantly breaks into a sprint, hand already wavering through the air in one of the Major Signs that he forms all of his spells from, he has his carved staff in his other hand, and holds it sideways to be out of the way
(dash 60' 30' from melee)

Round 2 Results (part 1)
Nosam (bot) attacks (1-2: the dodging ringleader) (3: Redbrand 3); (4-6 Redbrand 4, the one who just attacked him)
3
Nosam (bot) attacks the brutish no-neck Redbrand in retaliation for his treatment of the old valet.
Nosam’s warhammer hangs behind him, hidden by his shield, then the dwarf crouches, striking under the fighter’s guard.
22 to hit for 10 bludgeoning damage
And the Redbrand is struck close to his left knee, almost certainly cracking his thigh. The fighter falls in a heap, but rolls in the mud, grunting in pain but avoiding a followup blow from the dwarf. No-neck pulls himself up again, barely able to stand but still threatening with his short sword.
Redbrand 2, the door having been slammed in his face while Linene Stonehill still draws a bead on him, moves out of her line of sight.
In doing so, the Redbrand spots Kiselina, Daphyra, Vidruth, Marten, and Berry appearing at a run on the edge of the courtyard.
“Hold on boys,” the long-armed, red-stubbled man growls. He moves to a place between the new arrivals and the melee. He brings one hand up to his mouth and whistles loudly. TweeeeeEEET.
Redbrands 3 & 4 respond to the older Redbrand bystepping back a foot or two from Nosam, dodging but keeping their weapons at the ready and still in melee range with the dwarf.
Nosam sees Mrs Stonehill in the window with her crossbow leveled at Redbrand 4, ready to pull the trigger if he attacks Nosam. (OOC: THE OTHER PCs ARE NOT AWARE OF THIS BECAUSE THEY CANNOT SEE INTO THE WINDOW FROM THEIR LOCATION.)
Elsa, who had been glued frightfully to the melee, looks toward Kiselina and the others. She closes her eyes for a moment in what looks like incredible relief.
The Ringleader turns around, observing the new arrivals through his drooping, oily curls, eyes shining with malice, but says nothing. Yet.
The courtyard is framed by the Inn to the west, the three bathhouses to the north and east, and the henhouse and stable to the southeast and south. You enter the courtyard from between the stable and the Inn without passing through the Inn. Marten can easily hide at the corner of the Inn or Stable, about 40’ away from the Redbrands. Marten and Vidruth are now behind Daphyra and Kiselina, who stand in the short corridor between the stable and the Inn. Therefore any ranged attacks will be subject to the +2AC. Berry is 30’ up, atop the eave of a corner of the Inn, where he can see the entire courtyard. I actually have a map, but am unable to post it due to VPN issues with Imgur while abroad.
Marten cannot imagine that Nosam did anything to warrant an attack by a legitimate town guard, and everything they've heard makes him think that these Redbrands are as bad as the goblins. On the other hand, it sounds like their arrival may have encouraged the Redbrands to break off their attack. Since Nosam was still on his feet, Marten decides to wait and see whether the others can talk their way out of a fight.
When the others passed him, Marten saw that the paladin didn't have his trusty halberd. He doesn't like to think of Kiselina facing the Redbrands unarmed. Marten says, "Kis'lina. Take my sword." He draws his rapier with his right hand as he moves, hands it to Kiselina (hoping that the dragonborn knows how to use such a weapon), and then falls back to the corner of the Inn where he tries to hide while he waits to see whether the Redbrands go away or the fight continues.
Movement: ~10' forward to Kiselina and then 20' back to the corner of the Inn Action: handing his rapier to Kiselina Bonus Action: Cunning Action, Hide - Stealth24 Free Action: Drawing rapier and talking to Kiselina
Daphyra pulls up short, horrified to see Nosam in the middle of what looks like a gang. Since they seem to be holding off at the moment, Daphyra begins to point and is about to cast Toll the Dead, but holds off until the moment someone attacks. She calls out "Stop! What is the problem here?"
Action: Hold Toll the Dead until any of the redbrands attack - cast on the first to attack. (WIS DC 13 - 3 damage if unhurt, 10 damage if already hurt)
Bonus action: none
Movement: walks forward slowly while speaking (about ~5 feet closer)
Bot: Nosam responds to Daphyra, summarizing as follows: heard shouts, found the Redbrands bullying Elsa and Umberto, was surrounded and assaulted.
The ring leader, with his oily curls hanging into his face, interrupts.
“That’s one way o’ lookin’ at it, half-man. No one asked you to stick yer nose back here, same as ‘im.” He gestures to Umberto, to whose side Elsa has rushed.
“We was just eatin’ breakfast, calm an’ quiet as the mornin’ dew when this old fart come and start yellin’”
Kiselina, Vidruth, and Berry may now act in any order.
“Nice eating you do with your swords!” Shouts Berry down from the rooftop. “You’ve got my friend carved up with your sharp words, or what do you want to make us believe? That you slipped your long knife when cutting bread and it just so happened to swipe at him?” Berry fingers for a dagger that he could throw at the first sight of aggression and moves a bit down the roof, around what he thinks would be a good distance for a throw (20 feet away).
When the others passed him, Marten saw that the paladin didn't have his trusty halberd. He doesn't like to think of Kiselina facing the Redbrands unarmed. Marten says, "Kis'lina. Take my sword." He draws his rapier with his right hand as he moves, hands it to Kiselina (hoping that the dragonborn knows how to use such a weapon).
Movement: ~10' forward to Kiselina and then 20' back to the corner of the Inn Action: handing his rapier to Kiselina Free Action: Drawing rapier and talking to Kiselina
Kiselina moves into position, pushing forward to a point he can see what’s going on. He takes the rapier from Marten as he passes him, preparing to face the threat first described. The scout’s words, loud in the Dragonborn’s head.
He says, "Fightin'! At Stonehill's!!!" Marten is already sprinting toward the Inn ahead of the others. There's no time to scout, but he could at least warn the others about what to expect.
He shouts loudly to any of his companions who followed, "Nosam 'n' four thugs wi' swords!" Marten wants to make sure his friends know what they're running to, but he also wants Nosam (and the thugs!) to know that the dwarf isn't alone.
It is here Kiselina is stopped in his tracks. He lowers the rapier, pointing the tip to the ground in a non-threatening way as he looks around and gets an assessment of the situation. He notes Elsa and Umberto, Nosam, and the four Redbrands…but where are the thugs?
The knight steps forward into the middle, but turns to address Marten, “You said there were thugs attacking Nosam!” He looks back at the Redbrands, questioning “Did they get past you?”
Echoing Daphyra’s words, a general question to anyone, “What is going on here?”
vidruth slows his approach as the others do. walking a little ahead of daphyra before stopping somewhere he has a clear view of at least part of the ringleader, he just needs line of sight.
he leans on his carved staff a little out of breath, but his hand raising already
"kiselina, i think you might be a little bloody confused" he states with forced calm, changing languages to goblin briefly
marten, say the word and ill try and drop em
before swapping back to common "look lads, i dont know what your problem is with nosam here. but youve got a problem with him youve got a problem with me"

Berry: “Nice eating you do with your swords!” Shouts Berry down from the rooftop.
Two of the Redbrands burst out with harsh, snarky chuckles at this.
“You’ve got my friend carved up with your sharp words, or what do you want to make us believe? That you slipped your long knife when cutting bread and it just so happened to swipe at him?”
The ringleader silences the others with a glare, then looks around the courtyard everywhere but at Berry. “If you believed that you’d be dumber than you look. Why don’t ya come on out, tiny? Yer so small I can’t even see ye, hehehe.”
Kiselina: turns to address Marten, “You said there were thugs attacking Nosam!” He looks back at the Redbrands, questioning “Did they get past you?”
The ringleader answers. “The only thugs I see are right here in front o me, startin with this old fart and ending with half-man and tiny tot.”
Vidruth: “"look lads, i dont know what your problem is with nosam here. but youve got a problem with him youve got a problem with me”
The ringleader. “I’ve got a problem just lookin at ye. Why look, lads. He’s got something stuck on is lip. No wait, them’s his teeth!” There is a round of laughter.
Kiselina: “What is going on here?”
The ringleader. “It’s like I sez, Milord.” This last with a brutal smirk. “We was out here eating breakfast, and this here old fart come and disturb the peace. Why, it’s our job to keep the peace, so it was time to teach im a lesson.”
At this moment, two more red-cloaked men, armed and armored, step into view in between the bathhouses. One of them, older, built like a stone donjon, growls, “This why ye whistled, Ketch?”
The ringleader nods, smirking. “Yup. These two here,” he points to Nosam and Umberto, “interferin with us eatin the meal Elsa here providin for us.”
“Interferin with deputies of the law,” says the older man whom the others seem to defer to. His glance takes in everyone in the courtyard, the muscles in his neck twitching. “That’s serious business.”
Elsa heatedly interjects, “Interfering with deputies?? I was giving you food all right,” she turns to Nosam and the rest of you, “but just so you’d keep leaving the Stonehills and us alone! And Umberto saw me and didn’t know what was happening and came to my rescue, sweet old Umberto! All he did was ask you what your business was and you took that as an opportunity to torture him in front of me and eat the buttons from his own vest?? What kind of keeper of the law does that?? Why in Neverwinter I saw…,”
At this moment she is silenced as the ringleader slaps her across the cheek.
“That’s enough of that!,” he shouts. “Redbrands, get em!,” Donjon growls.
Everyone please roll initiative. For those who were holding actions, you may roll reaction attacks. The Redbrands were dodging, so roll at disadvantage.

Kiselina moves into position, pushing forward to a point he can see what’s going on. He takes the rapier from Marten as he passes him, preparing to face the threat first described. The scout’s words, loud in the Dragonborn’s head.
(ooc: holding here for turn based initiative)
vidruth slows his approach as the others do. walking a little ahead of daphyra before stopping somewhere he has a clear view of at least part of the ringleader, he just needs line of sight.
he leans on his carved staff a little out of breath, but his hand raising already
"kiselina, i think you might be a little bloody confused" he states with forced calm, changing languages to goblin briefly
marten, say the word and ill try and drop em
before swapping back to common "look lads, i dont know what your problem is with nosam here. but youve got a problem with him youve got a problem with me"
This Mug immediately shared with me a transcendental tale of an Infinite Mug that anchors the Universe and keeps it from folding in on itself. I filed this report under "illogical nonsense" and asked why its sign is in Times New Roman font, when it is basic knowledge that Arial Black is a far superior font. I wondered: How did this mug even get past the assembly line with its theistic beliefs and poor font choices?
