This Mug immediately shared with me a transcendental tale of an Infinite Mug that anchors the Universe and keeps it from folding in on itself. I filed this report under "illogical nonsense" and asked why its sign is in Times New Roman font, when it is basic knowledge that Arial Black is a far superior font. I wondered: How did this mug even get past the assembly line with its theistic beliefs and poor font choices?
quote from Romantically Apocalyptic byVitaly S Alexius
Another sound when secret door opened: a little bell hanging from a string over the door rings a small tinkling call.
Marten turns in alarm when he hears the bell. He starts to cross the room toward Daphyra in case the bell draws the attention of the wizard or some sort of guardian, but as he gets near to the opening to the chamber with the crevasse, he hears distant...singing?
the entire party hears yet another grinding sound coming from the hallway in the southeast, followed by a rough, booming voice entering that passageway and singing a grunting song in the goblin language.
Marten glances at Daphyra and puts his finger to his lips in a "shush" gesture before he sprints into the cavern room. He realizes that the group is all spread out. They may have just alerted the wizard, there's still one-eye lurking in the crevasse, and now it sounds like at least one goblin approaching from the south.
As Marten moves past the remaining bridge, he glances toward Nosam and simply says, "Hide!"
Marten doesn't know how many creatures are coming, but if a fight breaks out, he's worried that they'll soon be dealing with enemies from every direction. A wild idea pops into his head, and he tries to push down the nauseated panic at putting himself in front. But as the only human in their group, he's probably the only one who can try it. Marten leaves his reliable bow slung over his shoulder and instead draws the shortsword that he took from one of the Redbrands.
As Marten squeezes past Vidruth, he says, "Be ready in case this don' work."
Marten stands just south of Vidruth on the east side of the crevasse. He turns toward his right, facing southwest toward the ruined bridge, and flicks his red cloak so that it's nearly covering his left arm (on his south side). He looks straight ahead but tries to watch the hallway opening (K14) on his left from the corner of his eye.
Movement: 60' (with cunning action) to end in front of Vidruth at J11 M1 > L1 > K2 > K3 > K4 > K5 > K6 > K7 > K8 > J9 >> J10 (difficult terrain to pass Vidruth) > J11 Action: ready to accost the singer. Trigger - if Marten sees or hears anyone appear from the southeast hallway, Marten will turn his head toward them and say with as much confidence as he can muster, "Did you break this bridge?", and point toward the bridge with his shortsword. Bonus Action: Cunning Action, Dash Free Action: Talking, drawing shortsword
(OOC: Can Marten tell how many voices / footsteps are coming? Just one creature or many?)
Daphyra: Daphyra (init 23) instinctively reaches up to hold the bell at the top of the door to silence it.
Marten: Init 22. f Marten sees or hears anyone appear from the southeast hallway, Marten will turn his head toward them and say with as much confidence as he can muster, "Did you break this bridge?", and point toward the bridge with his shortsword.
Nosam: Nosam remains as still as possible and situated himself the best he can into H5. He is not in a spot to just take quick cover. Initiative- 20 (19+1) Stealth- (D) 12 (9+3)
Berry: action Stealth: 24; Initiative: 17). …he'll go to H15 in front of Kiselina
Kiselina: decided to move just inside the original secret entrance tunnel (H16) and tries to hide. He hopes the red cloak will help with the deception. Initiative: 17
Vidruth: (init 15) move to j10 / he moves back, and prepares to launch a bolt of flame at anyone obviously hostile who comes into view / (attack 15: damage 9
Daphyra must step into the secret doorway to reach up and silence the bell, which she can do standing on tiptoes. From the bottom of the dark stairs, her harengon form is silhouetted against the lantern light coming from the cavern room.
Nosam can actually pull back and hide at G6, eliminating line of sight to the hallway of the singing voice.
Berry would have to land at the bottom of the crevasse at J15, and would not there have line of sight to the hallway of the singing voice, so he lands in front of Kiselina instead.
Marten is breathing fast and nervously when he passes Vidruth, whose fingertips are giving off red flames as he prepares his spell. Marten readies his deception. But it's not a goblin. A bugbear rounds the corner and comes into view at K14, a seven-foot-tall tower of hairy muscle with fangs and huge cross-eyed glaring eyeballs. It is carrying a small deer over one shoulder while singing with more confidence than good intonation. When Marten points at the bridge and makes his demand (Marten Deception, rolled IC: 4-1=3), the bugbear barely looks at him, then frowns at the bridge, then glares at Marten. (Insight: natural 1!). But it shrugs and says, “No me, human. Now must go around.” It stops and looks at Vidruth, scratches its head. “New Redbrands better looking than old ones.”
When it stops singing, it is obvious that the bugbear was not alone in the hallway. Footsteps previously covered up are no longer so. Four humans wearing dirty red cloaks – Redbrands – come around the corner.
Now the strange creature in the crevasse moves to where the woodworker's body lies, and the creature shouts up to the new arrivals, “They come to kill Redbrands!”
The bugbear, still holding the deer and with confusion writ on its features perpetually, looms over Marten, looking one way and the other, uncertainly. The four Redbrands draw their weapons. We’ll say this triggers Vidruth’s readied spell, which fires through Marten and the bugbear at Redbrand 2, a muscular man with a handlebar mustache. He has half-cover due to intervening creatures. Vidruth’s rolled 15 misses by 1, and therefore may hit either Marten (1-2) or the bugbear (3-6). 4! The bugbear. Its AC is too high for the firebolt to do damage, but the bolt of flame bursts against the deer the bugbear is carrying, and now the bugbear bears its fangs and growls, a low, crackling rumble.
You are now situated like so:
Daphyra, Marten, and Nosam (ONLY) may take Round 1 actions in any order.
But it shrugs and says, “No me, human. Now must go around.” It stops and looks at Vidruth, scratches its head. “New Redbrands better looking than old ones.”
Marten prefers straightforward and honest dealings, and he's both relieved and amazed that this ruse worked. He must be better at bluffing than he thought!
Marten smiles weakly and starts to turn toward the other bridge, his mind already racing. Maybe Vidruth and he could get the bugbear and the Redbrands settled in their own chamber without seeing anyone else and...
Now the strange creature in the crevasse moves to where the woodworker's body lies, and the creature shouts up to the new arrivals, “They come to kill Redbrands!”
Marten pauses, and just as he turns back to the bugbear, unsure what to say, Vidruth's fire bolt hits the deer in the bugbear's arms. The situation immediately goes from bad to deadly.
Marten quails before the bugbear's fury, and his first instinct is to run and hide somewhere where he can use his bow. But -- no -- he can't abandon Vidruth to face the bugbear alone.Marten says tensely over his shoulder, "Vidruth, fall back." Then, a little louder: "Nosam? Meet us at the pillar."
Marten draws a dagger with his left hand, keeping the shortsword in his right. He's no match for a bugbear one-on-one, but with Vidruth behind him, he has nowhere to go. Marten grits his teeth and tries to buy time for Vidruth to retreat, feinting repeatedly and then trying to dodge the bugbear's attacks.
Movement: None? If allowed, Marten will retreat as Vidruth retreats, stopping at K8 (or L7 if Nosam is at K8). But IIRC, Marten can only use his movement on his own turn. Action: dodge Bonus Action: None Free Action: Talking, drawing dagger
Daphyra pokes her head around the corner to see the mess happening with the bugbear, gasps a quick intake of breath and casts Shield of Faith on Marten (+2 to AC). She tries to see if she can lock onto one of the attackers to cast Toll the Dead. She ducks back behind the wall for cover.
(Movement to J3 and back to I3)
Bonus Action: Shield of Faith to Marten
Action: Toll the Dead if/when she has line of sight to any of the redbrands/bugbear (WIS DC13 or 8 necrotic damage)
Nosam can tell this has gone south in a hurry. The good news is the natural bottleneck, it's going to be difficult for the reds to spread out or use any tactical advantage. Nosam makes a dash for the bridge at H13, "Mister Berry, I'm headed your way!" Potentially we could surround them and never let them advance into the chamber.

Round 1 Results (partial)
Marten draws a dagger and dodges.
Daphyra does not have to see Marten to protect him with Shield of Faith. However she cannot see any enemies from J3 due to the cavern pillar at J8 and curvature of the wall, both of which block her line of sight. So she does not attack.
Nosam moves to the opposite side of the Crevasse from Marten H13.
The bugbear figures out what is happening. Its crosseyes locked in Vidruth, it unslings the small deer from its shoulders and swings it at Marten, attempting to knock Marten into the crevasse. Marten: roll a STR save of 20 or take 8 bludgeoning damage from the fall and lands prone 20’ below at I-11, next to the one-eyes creature. If successful, the bugbear then moves up to engage Vidruth.
Berry, Kiselina and Vidruth may now act in any order. Berry and Kiselina are presently hidden from view of the Redbrands and Bugbear.
Kiselina hears the commotion in the cavernous room. He takes several deep breath centering himself for the ensuing fight. He spends his action in silent prayer to Bahamut. “Oh mighty Bahamut, hear my prayer. That we shall prevail against these oppressors. That you might deliver justice by our hands to those who take advantage of the goodness of others. May our actions honor you and your cause.”
The Paladin has never cast a spell before, this is a new power for him. And one that he is still unaware of truth to be told. But even unaware, the prayer is answered, the spell cast. Marten, Berry, and Nosam are Bless-ed (and may add a d4 to attack rolls and saving throws). Perhaps they feel a warmth inside, an extra layer of protection, more confident, or their arm is pulled more true when they attack. However it manifests for each of them, they gain the benefit until the knight loses concentration or the spell ends. Bless countdown: 10
Marten: roll a STR save of 20 or take 6 bludgeoning damage from the fall and lands prone 20’ below at I-11, next to the one-eyes creature. If successful, the bugbear then moves up to engage Vidruth.
Marten feints and crouches, ready to dodge, but he wasn't expecting to have an entire deer thrown at him! He manages to brace before he's hit, but he is surprised by the force of the bugbear's push. Marten digs his feet into the ground, slowing his slide toward the crevasse just enough to twist and pivot away before he falls over the edge.
Marten regains his balance and turns to face the bugbear again, shortsword and dagger in hand, blocking the bugbear's way to Vidruth and the bridge across the crevasse.
(OOC: Marten is still at J11 in between Vidruth and the bugbear.)
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.

Berry was waiting for the Redbrands to leave the tunnel but with Marten blocking the way, they will not be able to move along. What should he do? The small band seems to be in a pretty tough spot as they are, should he really go in and present himself as a target? Ultimately, he decides to take a careful approach and just draw his whip (in addition to the scimitar that is his default) and move to where Vidruth just left position. While passing the Bugbear, he lashes over the chasm at it and lands behind Marten to take cover behind him. Meanwhile Nosam came storming by him, calling for him. “You mean to shoot them while Marten holds the ground?” He asks Nosam and says to Marten, “Retreat if you want, you’re the better shot.”
Move to J10 Action: Attack the bugbear with a whip that he draws as part of the action: 14 to hit (with adv. and bless), 4 damage. Free: Stow scimitar.

Berry Move to J10 / Action: Attack the bugbear with a whip that he draws as part of the action: 14 to hit (with adv. and bless), 4 damage
Despite the intervening forms of both Marten and the bugbear, Vidruth fires once again through them both at Redbrand 1, and, despite the +2AC provided by half cover, the half-orc’s ice shard hits, doing 7HP damage to the first Redbrand. The ice splashes the red-cloaked fighter next to him, causing 5HP damage to him. The bugbear and third Redbrand duck away from the shards and avoid any damage. The wizard then moves to stand at the center of the remaining bridge over the crevasse.
Round 1 Results (cont'd.)
Berry’s whip lashes out at the bugbear, but one of the goblinoid's eyes is looking right at the fairy as he buzzes past, and the hairy creatures steps back just in time, avoiding the attack.
Redbrands 1 and 2 now take turns backing up to the wall, running ahead, and leaping over the crevasse, drawing their short swords, and attacking Nosam. They each attack twice 10, 9, 9 and 21 to hit, the last for 6HP piercing damage to Nosam.
Redbrand 3 raises a light crossbow and fires across the crevasse at Nosam. The bolt deflects off of the dwarf’s shield.
Redbrand 4 fires off a quick bolt at Marten, who receives half cover from the bugbear, but the shot is true (20 to hit / 6HP piercing damage). The Redbrand then runs back the way he came, and is now out of view.
Daphyra, at the top of the secret stairway, feels a crackling in the air. Looking down the stairs, she spots a bearded face pulling back from the doorway where it was peeking up. It pulls back, but not before magic words are spit out: “Misil magico!!,” and three bolts of force careen against the stairway walls, rebounding upward like a stampede of small beasts with Daphyra in their direct path. The harengon takes 10HP force damage from the battering bolts which strike her unerringly. The head is now no longer in sight.
Now the one-eyed creature turns slowly left and right, thinking, and then stands facing Vidruth where he stands on the bridge, from the bottom of the crevasse. Suddenly the half-orc feels a terrible withering coming from the creature, whose eye seems to throb, seems to pull at Vidruth’s mind, shriveling his very being with its awful gaze. Vidruth: make a CON save vs DC12 or take 11HP necrotic damage.

I wondered: How did this mug even get past the assembly line with its theistic beliefs and poor font choices?
quote from Romantically Apocalyptic by Vitaly S Alexius
Move to J10
