You open the door to find two juvenile orcs with spears and seven other people, humans and half elves. The orcs face the door with their spears leveled and bark something in their language. They turn their spears back at the hostages and then back at you. Your guess is that they are scared out of their minds.
Kragen, using his holy water, delivers last rites to what is left of the humans butchered in the long house. Searches the remaining room for clues which appears to be a kitchen.
”Sir Chadwick, go with Tyrs blessing and serve justice on those who perpetrated these acts!”
Chadwick drops the orc. The second one’s eyes go wide. He turns to attack a captive.
Your move.
Chadwick repeats his action and drops this orc as well. This pattern is repeated five more times. There are orcs from toddler age to pre-teen as well as. Non-combatant females. All react with hostility to you that are juvenile and older.
As long as they continue to try and attack the captives Chadwick will continue the slaughter. Once they stop he will gather their weapons and hand them over to the captives and tell them;
"I will leave it to you to determine what should happen to the remaining orcs as it was you and your kin who suffered here.
You may wish to remain in the shelter until you hear this whistle (shows them the signal whistle) signaling the all clear. The giant, manticore, and guards are all dead, but I would rather not take any chances that a few cowardly ones might still be about hiding and looking to cause harm.
May Tyr bless you and give you strength to recover from this ordeal"
Rinse and repeat until all the huts are cleared (or some actual opposition appears).
The now liberated captives are thankful to you for freeing them from the orcs and giant. They tell a quite disturbing story. The hill giant called himself Karlgar and happened upon this ranch several months ago. He slaughtered the people here and presumably ate them. After running out of people he ate all of the animals here. They were known in the area for raising mules and donkeys as well as sheep. Once all of those were exhausted he ranged about and came across the Razor Fang orcs. He was smarter than most hill giants and subjugated them instead of eating all of them after defeating their best warriors, and eating them in front of the rest of the tribe. The orcs were moved in to the canyon. They were tasked with bringing the giant enough to eat or he would eat them. Shortly after that the manticore showed up. It made a deal with the giant to watch the orcs that went raiding and make sure that they returned with more food. In return, the manticore was given a share of the treasure taken from the captured victims. The rest was kept by the giant. Some tell of the orcs taking some from them before getting back to the canyon to keep for themselves. After a while, the orcs started bringing back people with them. These they forced to work the crops planted to increase the amount of food that the giant had available in hopes that would leave more for the orcs. They were harsh and brutal. Anyone who resisted was fed to the giant. Everyone there tells a similar story of being kidnapped by the orcs and brought here to slave in the fields until it was their turn to feed the giant. These people are malnourished and exhausted. All want to go home to where they are from, scattered about the Spine of the World mountains. A total of 23 people are rescued.
Starker to party, out of the hearing of the former captives: “Sounds like there are likely two more treasure hoards for us to find, the giant’s and the orcs’. Also, it seems that there is no rightful owner of this excellently laid out compound. Perhaps we are the rightful owners now?
”Shall we sojourn here a few days while they recover their strength and we look for and hopefully find the loot hoards? Then we could perhaps escort them back to their farmsteads, hamlets, and little towns?”
Since we haven't found any food stores Chadwick will suggest to the captives that they slaughter and cook a couple of sheep for feasting. In the meantime he'll share what provisions he has with the ones that are in the worst shape. He has two cures spells left that he'll use on the most injured (which may be our own party).
He'll then ask for volunteers to help him clean the gore out of the living quarters (skipping the longhouse) so they are habitable for the next day or two. Chadwick yells jokes and sings some bawdy songs while they work to help alleviate the mood. A stark contrast to the individual cutting down juvenile orcs shortly before.
"Starker is correct, these folks will most likely need some time to recover. Perhaps the scout could inform Granitestead what we have found here and send some aid and wagons?"
To the party: "I feel any treasure we find should be spilt with the captives. They have suffered quite the ordeal and the coin will help them get back on their feet."

No activity was spotted, so assuming the guards locked them in the huts before coming after us, or are hiding in there with them.
We should be prepared for a hostage situation.
Great. Then I proceed to the nearest building or structure, open the door and look i side.
If people are present, see previous post.
If not, repeat at next dwelling/structure.

(Are we going by initiative, now?)
Ball is in your court
“Kill them now when they are small or kill them later when they grow up. I am indifferent and will defer to your judgment, friends.”
Chadwick will attempt to drive the spike of his Lucerne hammer into the skull of one of the juveniles.

Will help out with Toll the Dead until we are just left with noncombatants we don’t want to kill.
(Best used to clean up after one takes some damage from paladin but doesn’t die.)

Huts are cleared. The now freed, and armed, former captives finish the clean up in detail.

I second spending a few days here to help the captives recover and reconnoiter.
Should we send the dwarf scout back with news?
