Smiling Jack points the way for Barn and Caelen to lead us forward. As the party moves forward, Jack ensures the boat is safely secure. (Is the river tidal?)
After poling the boat across, Barn pulls the boat up the island bank and instinctively tries to stow it well away from the water, somewhere concealed to increase the chances it will still be there when the party need to leave.
"Can s-someone help me look for tracks. Not that Ned always leaves any, b-but maybe if he was dragging Clotha. I m-mean, those cats might leave tracks too, and who knows about d-dead monks, but maybe w-we see a sign of her."
Barn'sSurvival: 19 (with or without help - first roll was higher).
If there are no obvious leads to find Clotha from the tracks, the big man reports his findings and leads the way, presumably with Caelen, to the chapel.
There are no footprints indicating anyone has been on the island in a very long time.....perhaps Ned went straight across?
The group begin making their way through the ruins avoiding crumbling walls and sudden drops down old stairwells or disused wells....
After some time they make their way to the centre of the island....
Approaching the central buildings the chapel is deserted and those in the lead see a beautiful silver chalice, somewhat grown over with ivy though the chalice seems untarnished itself, standing on the ancient altar stone to the east of it. The sun streams through one of the arched windows of the chapel, throwing a pool of light on the altar. A minstrel’s gallery runs around the chancel at the height of 5m passing directly over the altar. This is wide enough to take one person abreast at a time.
The floor of the chapel is choked with rotting pews as the missing roof has let rainwater fill the bottom of the hall.
Reg had slept comfortably enough given the situation. When roused for his shift, he sat quietly, patiently waiting for the time to expire, but diligent in his watch. When it came time for the raft ride, he helped where he could. Moved it to the water, kept watch towards the shore. Helped secure it on the other side. The island was strange to him, he figured Ned and Clotha weren’t going to be here, however it was ‘on the way’ so he didn’t object to the pit stop. As the group moved, he wondered about all the inhabitants that might had lived here when it was more active. The normal lives they probably found boring. Was the dread of the land a slow overtaking, or was there simply a single night of terror that wrecked their lives. As they trudged along, making their way to the interior of the island, he kept an eye open for herbs and ingredients that might be useful later for crafting. He speculated perhaps the old monks brewed their own beer, their hops and barley now wild like the cats. But something shifted inside the trapper as the silver chalice came into view. Not a large change, but just an awe that warmed him a little more in the morning mists of dampness. “If you all can give me a moment, keep your awareness about you. I’d like to reference my notes and book for a spell, er that is I mean a short time.”
He finds a spot out of the way and spends the time to ritually cast Detect Magic. He doesn’t stop anyone from doing anything else, but hopes to have the time to try and determine barriers and wards before they are disturbed.
Smiling Jack sees the chalice, "I guess that is what ole Elen wanted." Looking at Reg, then speaks to the others, "I guess I can grab it if all of you say I should? but I think we need to wait on Reg to finish."
With the rot and everything, Jack does look for the best way to get there.
Barn is on the verge of simply striding forward to liberate the chalice when the better sense of Reg and Pockmarked Jack get through to him.
"I... I think they're r-right," the big man mutters to Smiling Jack. "Something s-seems wrong. That Thomas the Wayfarer w-was lying to us. He was p-part undead like the d-dead monks we heard wailing here last n-night and that Elen talked about. Don't think they want us to g-get the holy chalice. If they are g-guarding it, then that might not even be it, or if it is real and not f-fake, then it could be a trap like the other Jack s-said."
As he waits for Reg (and anyone else) to finish, Barn forces himself to stand at the chapel's edge and conduct a thorough scan of the walls, gallery, altar and floor, searching for anything seemingly out of place or hazardous, or any signs of movement or threats hidden in the dappled sunlight.

The man trails off before continuing as a different thoughts enters his head. “Who has that gem the leper gave us. I wonder if looking through it here might grant us some insight.”

She is going slow and trying to scope out 'safe spots' on this run down island. "This place is derelict. Just depressing."
Jack expresses interest in the whole transport thing. Never been on a boat before.
This adventure thing has it's benefits!
