As you make your way out, Barry puts his hand to his chin for a moment... "They've gotta soft underbelly." He says. "Just like you!" Says one of the female bears and they start a wrestling match as you make your way out.
So you all manage to scoot out from the Barraks with no problems and descend the hill down into the city’s slums. The chittering guides you towards the Eastern side of the city, like a sonar. The clicks get quicker in the back of your mind the closer you get, but only if you choose to listen to them.
As you make your way through the rusty metal sheds, Bobo, being from around here slightly longer than the rest of you, points out the resident doctor Axel, a blacksmith named Clive, a cook whom you’ve already met named Bert, a self-proclaimed artificer named Leroy and the scrap metal yard, owned by an individual known as Growler.
[DM real talk- During this early stage of character development, you can visit any of these places in order to possibly gain proficiency in a skill and tools of that profession’s choice. If there isn’t one here you’re interested in, let me know. You can always upskill later in the adventure!]
“Bug Hunting it is then” Garlic mutters. He seems to have been drifting in and out of awareness all day, grunting and replying in short choppy sentences when required, but otherwise completely zoned out, lost in his own world. Strange contrast from the hyper aware, wise craking seasoned veteran vibe you were all getting from your initial meeting in the cages.
When at the weapons shop, the giant orc diddnt so much as glance at the larger weaponery one with his stature would normally favor. Instead Garlic took an wicked looking dagger, a short sword that looks like it might as well have been a dagger in his ginormous hands, and a single hand-sized looking cross bow, taking only a few bolts and a small ammunition bag. He made no quips about his or other people’s weaponry, he was on full auto pilot, inspecting and pocketing the weaponry with the ease of someone extremely used to handiling such small equipment.
You follow the chittering, like a sonar. the closer you get, the more frequent. It guides you into a quiet part of the city. Less occupied and empty streets. Eventually, you turn down a alley way which is surrounded by taller building and the chittering stops. A cloaked figure, tall, around 8' stands at the end. The robes look... bumpy around the figure, but it looks vaguely humanoid.
In your minds, you hear: "We meet, at last. You have done so, very well to get to me."
“Tell us what you want from us bug brains, and we’ll try to fit you in on our schedule to please our fifty other masters and black mailers.” He grunts out, trying to say the joke in a teasing manner, but just ending up sounding like he’s suffering from something. When you all look at him for his odd tone of voice, you see he’s sweating profusely, and looking rather gray in the skin. Very, very gray, like an wholly unnatural skin pigmentation. He pulls his large cloak around himself, completely bloating most of his features from view, but you can still see his hands which look like they’ve lost all pigmintation by now.
“Yes, it is.” It replies. “Once my home, these barbarians have taken it away from us. This used to be an oasis, this part of the desert. They came, the brutes and pushed us away, kulled us off. We had nowhere to go... but underground. Me and my people were happy here, on the surface, but we now dwell underground in tunnels. They farm our oasis- they call it slag to boil into water for your people. Some hunt us now, from the West. It is not right. We have a plan. Will you help us? We can, in turn, help you escape.”
“GHAaa!” Cora barks, startled. She looks nervously at Yasei and Dani. She then clears her throat, as if that’s what she meant to do. “Sorry. Something in my throat.”
Yasei: "The only defense against violent men is good men that are more efficient at being violent. We, my friend, are efficient. But how do we know that what you're saying is the truth? What evidence can you offer us that your word is true?"
It replies, in your minds. “I can show you...” You have a chance to resist this if you want as your vision begins to go dark... DC 14 wis save. Otherwise, read the spoiler.
You have flashes in your mind. Obviously memories as you do not just see these images, but you can feel them. You feel joy and happiness as you see a whole colony of Thri-kreen thriving and living.
Another flash brings a seering feeling of sorrow and pain, as you see the colony that once was, now a desolate field of bodies. Large elephant like mammels offloading numbers of humanoid forces to the likes of bugbears and orcs.
The feeling of hate surges through you as you see two humanoids, back to back. One tall, muscular man wielding a crude maul. The other, a fat pig of a man, donning a butchers apron covered in your loved ones blood.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Yasei's WIS save: 7
Feeling the image take over her mind, she suddenly shrieks in horror of what she sees. "Those ungodly ANIMALS...." is all she manages to get out, just as the tears start to flow. And flow they do, unceasingly.
Cora accepts the vision. It all happened so fast. All the emotions, the vision seemed so real. Like she was there. A rush of emotion. Happiness, sorrow, and hate. When hate came, it made her stronger, tougher, focused. She had no idea why, she was in a vision, but she was mad. Something inside her, deep down, in addition to feeling the hot rush of anger, stirred and hungered, wanted more, made her razor sharp and focused, as if she was being offered a sample of power from a place she had forgotten. It wasnt scary that waves of hate flowed through her easily, as if, at one point in her life, it was natural.
What was scary was that she enjoyed it.
When she came back to the present, she opened her eyes and took a moment to settle her breathing, embarrased at the new sensation, and again, began to worry something was very wrong with her.
Danica silently weeps at the vision. "I suspected as much." She murmured before replying to the original question "I for one, am willing to help. Our goals seem to be as one. Can you read images as readily as you project them?"
You look back at the thri kreen. It seems to be.. panting? Doubled over in pain as if showing those visions was draining for it.
"What do you mean by read images?" It asks Dani.
"The civil war will be the perfect time for our uprising." It says. "When the brothers go to fight, we shall wait until these fools have wiped each other out enough so that we may come and rise again, to the surface."
[For those who may not remember: the city of Rust and the city of Arid are currently in high tensions as trade on the dune has stopped between the two leaders- brothers, Sledge and Krum. Sledge usually sends a large shipment of water and Krum sends precious metals. But one day, the metals just stopped coming in. Noone knows why.]

Cora waves at the creature. "Hello!" She smiles. "Is this whole city all trashed like this?"

Cora snorts in a quick laugh, and while looking at "bug brains", points to Garlic Bread.
