Perry, you notice that one of the guards who was told to keep a close eye on you give you a stink eye as you walk by.
The group heads over to a large building. The large stone structure stands out among the smaller wooden houses. It looks like a mix between a temple and a mage's home. The doors are open to the public and you walk in. Two rows of pews are separated by a long walk way that leads up to a podium. Two stone tables decorated with jeweled skull statues, golden jewelry and flowers. A large stained glass window bears the image of a red skull with a growing fire behind it. At each corner of of the building is a spiral staircase that leads up to two more stories that have open floors. From what you can see from the bottom floor, the other two floors have numerous bookshelves and each one is filled to the brim.
You spot two people dressed in grey robes, both male, who are currently cleaning the temple.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Fenchurch looks at the men in the grey robes, and then to the chained man apparently named Perrance. He got the distinct impression that whoever ran this church would likely not be unchaining his new friend without a major cost. His friend also didn't seem to be that good at the whole "talking" thing.Loath as he was to admit it, this looked a job for a clever and friendly gnome.
"So Perry...or is it Perrance? Pardon my intrusion, but I'm not sure that you will be your best advocate, what with the chains and all. Would you mind if I tried talking to these fine people, see if I can make them see reason?"
Fenchurch also wracked his brain to see if he remembered anything about this church, with its foreboding logo and less than friendly appeal (religion check 17)
"It's Perry. Tell 'em I was solvin' their smuggler problem an' lookin' for missin' 'splosives I reckon 'em same smugglers stole. They 'tacked me with smoke just 'cause I spied 'em talkin' t'gether in tha' alley. The wind was 'armless. The smoke..." Perry trails off and shrugs. Quietly he adds, "Thanks." He then hangs his head and fiddles with his chains. He's not trying to break them. It's just something to do.
[Did they get Perry's gear when they bailed him out?]
Fenchurch in your time at the Silverthread Academy, you know of the goddess Wee Jas, The Lady of Book and Bone. She is a goddess of death, magic, vanity, and law. She is considered a steward of the dead, ferrying souls back and forth between the living realm, but she does not violently seek out death and is relatively benign is the grand scheme of things. She doesn't fall on a certain side of the moral scale and instead focuses on law and order. People also deem her a to be a being of knowledge, encouraging her followers to learn, study, and seek out lost lore, as such many magic users tend to worship her as well.
From what you remember when Mar'veil said when he visited to acquire his own permit, is that the High Priest was actually quite lively and excitable, a stark contrast to the oppressive temple that she resides in.
Perry:
All of your items where returned except your symbol. You will be able to retrieve it from them once you have a permit.
Nearly lost i n her own world while walking with the group, she snaps out of it for a second. "Nice to meet you Perrance, er Perry. Name's Barbara, or Barb, or perhaps Babs if you're a bit cheeky.
She is looking about curiously, fascinated by the temple and its iconography. On the way here she examined Perry’s manacles, trying to assess her chances at unlocking them herself (but not actually working at them, mindful of the watchful guards).

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
Armed with his knowledge, Fenchurch walks up to two of the men in the grey robe.
"Wisdom in the Book, and Truth in the Bones. My good sirs, I fear that there may have been some misunderstanding. My friend Perrance... er Perry. He was trying to restrain some thieves, following in the example of our august lady Wee Jas. However, a few of the local constables seem to have misunderstood, and now my colleague finds himself unfortunately...shackled. If you could provide us with an audience with the high priestess, I would be much obliged."
And then he gave the two his best conspiratorial whisper.
"And if you are able to help my friend out with this, I would be happy to buy you a drink, and maybe tell you a story or two of my time at the Silverthread Academy. I know that I am nowhere as learned as a follower of the goddess, but I may have a few small stories that might add to your knowledge."
You both recognize that the figures you've seen were all very similar; very short (about the size of children) and dressed in brown cloaks with no notable markings or symbols on them.
Fenchurch:
One of the men stops his sweeping. He gives you a small bow.
"Afternoon sir, may the Dark Lady's blessing be upon you. You say your friend has had some has come into some misfortune with the law, before I go and fetch Priestess Narcessca, may I ask how exactly he ended up within the law's grasp? Which law did he break?"
"Hi..." He gulps and blushes. It's a very peculiar expression on a large and disfigured man like Perry."...Ba... Babs." He quickly turns to Wolf Pup."Yeah. Gotta be the same. Like lil kids all done up in robes."
"My colleague here was intercepting a set of thieves, who absconded with materials belonging to my employer, the Marvelous Marr'Veil. He caught up to the men, who had eluded the constables of this fine city. Being outnumbered, he attempted to make a citizen's arrest. In the process, he had to defend himself, and his weapon may have inadvertently come unsheathed. When the police came to him to violating, accidentally mind you, your city's prohibition on the display of dangerous magics and weapons. Now, I am not here to debate the merits or wisdom of this law, but I hope you see that in Perry's case he had to choose between skating a law and letting far more malevolent criminals get away with their crimes. He could not stand idly by while wickedness happens; I believe that Wee Jas would support his following of a higher code over a worldly law, and I hope that your princess will agree.

"Shoulda jus' blown 'em up." Perry grumbles moodily to himself so only Babs and Pup could hear.
He shakes his chains slightly as he thinks what might have happened had he unleashed his God's Destructive Wrath with a wave of thunder instead of a harmless blast of wind. He'd probably be on for murdering kids instead of just breaking some silly magic ban. Who were those small figures in cloaks? Kids don't usually throw smoke bombs and flee down a sewer grate when being spotted in an ally. Something bigger than the guards was happening and he seemed to be the only one catching on. Would this orc, woman, and gnome who were helping him believe his tale? Why were they helping him in the first place? If only he could get these shackles off he could get to work sorting all this stuff out...
In his musings, Perry had started absently straining against his manacles. So preoccupied in thought, he doesn't even seem to realise what he's going. STR check to break the chains: 18. [If you want disadvantage for doing it mindlessly: 15.]
Tangle seems miffed to not be included in Perry's internal monologue. <grin>
She is curiously poking about the chapel, getting in to things she probably shouldn't, but not keeping anything that isn't hers. She spends a long time smelling any incense she comes across.

I'll let Mistress Narcessca determine if you are telling the truth. I believe she's still having tea with her sister in her office. So if you would like to wait here and-" The man stops as a large form suddenly falls out of the air and latches on to him. A unnaturally giant crow now sits on his shoulders. It lets out a series of caws, which you watch the man flinch from the proximity of the sound. When he recovers he says to the bird.
"Are you sure?"
"Caw, Caw!" "But Narcessca-"
"Caw!"
"Very well then. The High Priestess will see you now. Come I will take you to her."
He leads you over to the set of spiral stairs in the right hand corner. He guides you up two floors and and down several hallways. As you climb you notice that a few civilians are scattered about; sitting at tables and reading books. The entire time you walk the crow stares at the group. Eventually you come to a door. The man knocks on the door and a muffled female invites him in. He opens the door and allows you all to walk in ahead of him. A thick, earthy smell fills your nostrils as you enter. The room is small, but cozy and the bright colors give off a warm inviting feeling. There's a large window that looks out to the sea and it is flanked by lavish cherry red curtains. A large oak wood desk with with several tomes and papers scattered about. Several mannequin heads line a few shelves hanging on the wall that each are uniquely decorated with gold, silver, and ruby jewelry.
"Velcome, Velcome!" A thickly accented female voice says. Your eyes are drawn to the source and in the corner seated at a small table are two halflings. One of the halfling women has her long brown hair tied up into a ponytail and is dressed in a large purple, almost fairy-tale like dress. The crow flies over to that halfling a lands on her head, nuzzling into her hair. At that same moment you see that halfling's eyes shift from a dull grey color to a bright green. She reaches up and scratches the crow's chin.
"See I told you." She says quietly the the other woman wearing grey robes.
"Yes! Yes! You did! Velcome guests. Please come in, I zhall make more tea! I don't have many chairs but zhats okay you can sit on zhe floor, I don't mind. Vould you like any cookies? Zhese ones look like little skulls, zhey are so cute and have little raspberry centers."
The one that is speaking is almost the opposite of the other woman in terms of appearance. She is a halfling, but her skin is grey-ish pink and a set of horns just begins curling off of her head. A long tail whips back and forth excitedly and her smile is sharp and fang filled. Her robes and adorning jewelry denote that, yes, this very tiny tiefling is the High Priestess.
