It's early evening as the party arrives at the temple, and, when you all arrive there, you encounter Father Petrovich in the doorway, speaking with a young man. The priest turns his attention to you: Friends! It is good to see you returned to Vallaki. I hope you will allow me the honor of introducing you to our greatest benefactor, Lord Vasili von Holtz. He gestures toward the young man next to him, who is, indeed, dressed like a young lord: black leather, trimmed with deep reds, and beautifully groomed. You can see him here. Lord von Holtz gives generously to the temple, making it possible for us to feed and protect those we house within. Lord von Holtz, these champions have done more than anyone to drive back some of the darkness here in Vallaki. Here is Barnaby, the brave wizard, Kif, the mighty warrior, Lucento, the wise cleric, and Chubs, the, uhh, the uhh, Chubs.
Lord von Holtz turns to you and bows, with a friendly twinkle in his eye. Any friend of Father Petrovich is a friend of mine. Greetings, one and all.
edit: Of course you don't have to interact with every NPC. Up to you.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Lord von Holtz, pleasure to meet you. It's nice to see these people and this church have some supporters. There is certainly a darkness upon this land (duh) Why we were, this very morning, attacked bu men that took the shape of wolves, or perhaps the opposite. Even the pastries of this town seem to have an agenda
Your Excellency! exclaims Chubs, as he twirls his hand with a flourish and then bows low over his prodigious belly, throwing himself off balance and stumbling forwards a few steps.
Barnaby furrows his brow at Chubs and then turns with a smile to the Duke. Lord von Holtz, I am the wizard known as Barnaby The Bold of Winterkeep. As my good friend and associate, Kif, has said, it is a pleasure to meet a gentleman who is looking to do good in this troubled land. Please let us know if there is anything that we can do to help you in your efforts to help Barovia. We are, obviously, visitors to this land. But, it has become clear that, if nothing is done about the curse that hangs over us, we will become residents. Nice as it is here, that is not our plan, and so, in helping you, perhaps we can help lift the curse. I don't know if that makes any sense, but we don't have much to go on right now. If nothing else, if we are stuck here, then improving the conditions will benefit us as well.
Also, those boots are just exquisite. Did you get them here in town? I'd love to see if I could get a similar pair...maybe in a black patent finish though.
Lord von Holtz turns to Chubs and then, as that falls apart, smiles gently and turns his attention to Barnaby.
You are absolutely right. I confess I don't do all that I should, though. Sometimes I hear about some evil or other that might be a worthy challenge for you fine adventurers. Next time that happens, I'll take you up on your offer and let you know.
As for my boots, thank you. I confess there is some benefit to the dual advantages of wealth and family connections.
Well. He looks at you all affectionately. It has been an honor to meet you, I look forward to next time, and I will take my leave. Father Petrovich, it was a great pleasure to see you, and please write me as soon as little Ilsa's fever breaks. He gives a polite and somewhat relaxed little bow, and walks off.
You enter the church and find Ireena inside. She is tending to a sick young buy, coughing weakly, and she introduces him as Ilsa. You all exchange a few words. She is happy to see you, asks in detail about your adventures, and describes to you the ways in which she has been looking after the poor, the sick, and the fearful hiding out in the temple. She doesn't have any meaningful developments for you, and says an affectionate goodbye as you make your way back to the Blue Water Inn.
How do you wish to spend the time until the festival at noon the following day?
Lucento examines Ilsa closely, muttering some arcane words under his breath. Nothing seems to help. I am hopeful he will recover, but his illness is beyond my powers.
The party makes its way back to the inn, where, apparently, people heard about the resupply of wine. There tavern is packed. You see Lady Wachter's sons, and Rictavio the clown, among others you've seen around town. You enjoy your dinner and drink. You are welcome to turn in, and tell me what you do in the morning, or talk to people at the Blue Water.
Kif settles down in the booth with his friends and a really tall beverage
OK, Gents, what's the plan here? we started out just stopping here on our way to get Ireena to safety, We've done what we can to help out here, but short of killing the Berdermeister and his clan can we make things better, It seems like we'll just being handing shit over to some equally unworthy a-holes (he points to the Wachter kids) I'm pretty sure Rictavio isn't who he says he is, and how about those werewolves that we slapped hard but then they got away do we see any culprits here in the inn
Kif burns inspiration as he looks about 17 perception
Yes Kif, I think I would have to agree with you as it feels like months have passed since we were here last. I recall next to nothing. Perhaps it was the pastries.
The companions sit and enjoy a hearty meal and glasses of wine. It does, in fact, feel like ages. But here you are!
From the corner table, Kif is well-positioned to scan the room. At one table, he sees Rictavio, telling stories to a pair of townspeople. The Wachter brothers are seated at their usual table, and appear to be trying to explain something to a few townspeople gathered around their table. There are a couple of hulking brutes of men, likely hunters, together at another table. Five or six ordinary-looking townsfolk are scattered about the room.

Hey! The Wizard of Wines is a whole chapter of the book! It wasn't *supposed* to be fast! :p
I feel like there is something about Rictavio we haven't cracked yet. And the hulking men, the hunters...hmmm.
Kif is going to get up, head to the bar and buy beverages for the hulks and himself and bring them to their table
So gentlemen, how are you this evening. Please, our luck has had a recent upswing, please enjoy some drinks on me. I think we'll be sharing with everyone in town before too long
So what do you do here about town, you don't look like the usual weak-ass townsfolk.
They do, in fact, appear to be hunters. They aren't armed to the teeth at the moment, but you can see assorted hunting-type equipment on them. They both have, among other things, long knives you would associate with skinning game.
You haven't met them before. They are young men, you realize, but they are grizzled and dour looking. Your tactic of approaching with drinks in hand, however, pays off. Oy, thank ye. I'm Szoldar. This is Yevgeni. He gestures with his chin, and the other man grunts. We hunt wolves, sell the meat. You're not from here; ye been outside the walls. You might guess that they don't often encounter people who go outside the walls of Vallaki.

Anyone think we need to check on Ireena?
Good idea Kif. We should check in on the lass and make sure she’s getting on okay. You’re such a softy inside that big frame of yours.
Well it seems like the likely thing to do and a quick peck on the cheek would be most appreciated

He appears to be pleasant, open, and sincere. I’ll move you guys past him tomorrow, if I don’t get anything else.

Kif stifles a laugh at Chubs' jazz-hand fail, poorly

Lucento, is there something you can do to help the boy?

well, back to the inn then, maybe there will be mother f*ckers we can mix it up with or a good red meat stew and a flagon of brew before bedtime

what's he see in front of him?
I'll carry over your natural 20 Perception.
