I continue for a couple of hours, or until something happens, in a direction away from the road. If it is within my skills, after about 15 minutes, I'll make an effort to hide my tracks, perhaps by hiking in streams or such things. Survival: 8
Please understand, Dov, that I'm perfectly happy to handle a split party, but I will often (like, for instance, now) be unwilling to wind the clock faster for one piece of the party than for the other part. So I'll catch up to you, but now I need to see what's going on with the others.
I'm imagining you sneaked out on the wilderness side of the camp, rather than the road side. Please let me know if that is correct.
***I am assuming that Puddin did not hear Fope's monologue to Kif? Am I still under a mind control spell?**
Though she says nothing to the group of the halflings disappearance, but she suddenly I'll at ease. Why would he dash and leave our group all of a sudden?
She turns to Damia, "Food and good ale is serious business! When life is full of only tragedy and loss, it's the simple pleasures of life that really matter. Kif, may I speak with you for a wee moment in private?"
***Does Puddin have anything to shield spying eyes to see my condo with Kif?****
You were never affected by a spell, Puddin. You are not aware of any spell having been cast.
Damia only came over because she was summoned by you guys. At your indication that you would like privacy, she is more than happy to bow her head slightly in a gesture of respect, and return to mending leather straps.
There does not appear to be anyone listening. Indeed, other than Stanimir's presentation to you, and the entertainment and food you have been freely given, it does not appear that there is any pressure on you to do anything. You are, of course, free to speculate about why Fope ran into the forest. As, indeed, am I.
I did drop a hint about the spellcasting bit, but I will lay it out more plainly for the curious players: Stanimir cast "suggestion," which is a first level spell in which you give a suggestion, and the target has to pass a save or follow the suggestion. There are significant limits on what the suggestion might be, but in this case it was "sit by the fire and relax," so the limits of the spell were not tested. Fope failed his save and did as suggested. You did hear his speech, from a couple of pages ago. By the time he delivered it, the power of the spell had faded.
You are as free to speculate about his motives as anybody, and - as I already posted to him - you do not all have to be together at the same time. If you do not care to chase him into the woods, you do not have to, and you can (and probably should) discuss this decision in character with your friends. As you are already doing.
Kif, you watch as Fope makes his way toward the far corner of a tent and then sprints off into the darkness.
With that roll, you also notice this: It is very late for the Visanti to be so busy with camp-related responsibilities. You realize that they may not even be sleeping this night, and might be breaking camp within a couple of hours.
"So Kif, did Mr. Fope drop a line to you that he was going to going to flee the scene? I have not spoken with him too much so I never got a sense of his 'character.' Perhaps his time with gypsies wasn't too good for him. I do not like it when my friends know something I don't know and then chooses not to share. Quickly, tell me what you know?"
Yeah, I caught his disappearing act. Didn't give me a clue that I can recall. Fine show of character, if you ask me.
And I'm thinking these folks are more about packing camp than settling in for what's left of the evening. Might just be usual process of breaking camp, but who knows
Barnaby missed the great escape, but, if someone points out that Fope has left, he will nonchalantly shrug his shoulders.
Bringing a coward on this adventure was never going to work anyhow. I have no use for men such as he. I'm looking forwards to a good nights sleep and an early start.
Barnaby hasn't noticed that camp is getting prepped to leave, and he begins looking around for a comfy place to curl up and go to sleep.
Twenty or thirty minutes go by, and Stanimir comes out to join you. He is now dressed for the road, and not for sitting by a campfire.
Young Fope did not care to join us, eh?
Daimla appears at his elbow: I warned him not to go into the forest, father.
Well, his fate is out of our hands now, dear. Friends, I hope you are ready to travel, but we probably have what you need, if you are not ready. Make yourselves comfortable for a few moments more, and we'll be off.
With that survival check, Fope gets turned around pretty quickly. He had calculated that he would be near the river, but with a sinking feeling in his stomach realizes it is not at all where he thought it would be. Unlike dwarves and gnomes, he is not gifted with night vision, and in the fog there is no light from the stars. He is, essentially, feeling his way through the pitch black. Exhaustion overtakes him, and he knows he must rest.
Fope, make a survival check just to see if you can find a place in the dark to rest comfortably. If you fail, you will have the "Exhausted" condition on the coming day.
But we will save this, as your plan. Got it.

All good. I understand.

Puddin's eyes catch a bit of movement deep in the trees and she turns her head, just catching a glimpse of Fope dashing into the night.
Do you say anything? Damia appears not to have noticed. Your other friends may or may not have noticed. We can't tell yet. :)

Aye, Puddin', what's on yer mind

Let's pause again for a bit, as we wait for Barnaby. He is otherwise engaged and will be with us presently.

Edit: “Dang smoke in my eyes.”
The mist looming over the camp is blending with the smoke as the night crawls by.
We continue to wait for Barnaby's full attention, but the blown ash in his eye prevented him from seeing much of anything.
Barnaby missed the great escape, but, if someone points out that Fope has left, he will nonchalantly shrug his shoulders.

Meanwhile, out in the forest:

For the curious, the exhaustion table:
If Fope blows this survival check, he will move into Level 1 of this table.
